As part of this expansion, the NFL will merge with the United Football League (UFL), transforming it into a minor league system with 36 teams. Current UFL players will remain with their teams, and additional talent will be acquired through an expansion draft. This draft will include free agents from the UFL, CFL and other leagues, as well as undrafted players from both the NFL’s expansion draft and the NFL draft.
The UFL’s role as a minor league system will allow players to develop their skills and work toward an NFL call-up, creating a seamless pathway for talent development.
A new two-way contract structure will also be introduced for players selected in the fifth, sixth and seventh rounds of the NFL draft. This system would allow teams to move players between the NFL and their UFL minor league affiliate, making talent development more efficient. Players selected in those rounds, as well as undrafted players, can sign a two-way contract.
Similar to the NHL, if a player on a one-way contract is sent to the minors, they must first pass through waivers. Any player can sign a two-way contract, but their salary will be capped at a maximum of $1 million per season and a minimum of $750,000, even if they are on an NFL roster. As a result, this contract structure will primarily be used for players unlikely to make an immediate impact on game day or for veterans whom teams want to keep in the building.
Each organization will have a maximum of 16 two-way contract slots. Players on these contracts can participate in either NFL or UFL (minor league) games but cannot play in both within the same week, as UFL games will take place on Fridays.
Teams will still be allowed to elevate two players per week, as they do now, but those players cannot participate in both leagues’ games in the same week. After three elevations, a player on a two-way contract will automatically convert to a one-way contract on the NFL roster, increasing their salary and limiting the team’s ability to send them back down.
This system is designed to improve player development, keep promising talent within the NFL’s ecosystem longer and enhance trade opportunities. Teams will be able to build a farm system leveraging prospects along with draft picks and current players to improve their rosters.
The NFL is already a global powerhouse, with millions of fans tuning in from around the world to watch games each week. But what if the league decided to take things a step further and expand internationally?
One potential scenario for an international expansion in the NFL could involve creating new teams in major cities outside of the United States. This could include cities like London, Mexico City, Toronto, and Tokyo, where there is already a strong interest in American football. These new teams could compete in their own division, playing games both in their home city and in the United States against existing NFL teams.
In addition to expanding the number of teams, the NFL could also look to establish a stronger presence in international markets through partnerships with local leagues and organizations. This could involve hosting more games overseas, as well as setting up youth development programs and training camps in key markets.
Of course, there are many logistical challenges to consider when it comes to expanding the NFL internationally, including travel schedules, time zone differences, and cultural differences. But with the growing popularity of American football around the world, an international expansion could be a lucrative opportunity for the league to reach new fans and grow its global brand.

Simone Biles took pride in her family coming out to volunteer at her eponymous event, the Biles International Invitational. The eighth annual edition of the event from January 31 to February 2 already hosted the Glow Party at the World Champions Center, Texas.
Biles, who had a successful Paris Olympic campaign, winning three gold medals and a silver, performed in a 30-city Gold Over America tour from September to November. She then celebrated the holidays with her husband at the NFL field, cheering on the latter during the NFL season.

He’s vastly more experienced at this stuff, has more stats and facts at his disposal than almost anyone, is a really quick typer and isn’t hungover/sleep deprived/racked with a perennial nag of existential ennui… you don’t mind do you? I’m being facetious (but truthful about Rob) of course, in case you missed it there was some controversy in the last match as Shivam Dube was conked on the helmet whilst batting, prompting a concussion replacement for India, Harshit Rana came in for his Twenty20 international debut during the England innings. Now, Rana is a far better bowler than Dube, this was no ‘like-for-like change’, as the rules state.
Jos Buttler didn’t go full sour grapes after the match, England should have won the match regardless and squandered an opportunity to tie the series and set up a shootout at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai today, but he made his feelings clear:
It’s not a like-for-like replacement, we don’t agree with that…either Shivam Dube has put on about 25mph with the ball or Harshit has really improved his batting. It’s part of the game. I still think we should have gone on to win the match. But we disagree with the decision. We’ll ask Javagal [Srinath, the match referee] some questions just to get some clarity around it.”
So the series might be gone but there’ll be a bit of frisson and an England side looking to prove a point coming up against and Indian side wanting to put any questions about the validity of their series win to bed with a 4-1 victory overall.

CHICAGO (CBS) — A worker at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport was critically injured Saturday night when an aircraft tug collided with a plane that had just landed and was approaching a gate, causing the tug to flip over.
The Federal Aviation Administration said that the incident occurred at around 7:35 p.m. local time, Air Wisconsin Flight 6181 was hit by an aircraft tug while approaching a gate at O’Hare. Air Wisconsin is a regional airline operating under American Eagle, which is a subsidiary of American Airlines.
Chicago police said the tug flipped over after colliding with the wing of the plane, and the tug flipped over, pinning the driver underneath it.
The driver, a 64-year-old man, was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in critical condition with injuries to his head and lower body. Police said he was stabilized at the hospital.
The FAA said the plane, a Bombardier CRJ-200, had just arrived from Kalamazoo, Michigan. No passengers were injured, the Chicago Department of Aviation said, adding that “there was no significant impact on airport operations.”
Everyone was taken off the plane after the collision and bused to the terminal.
“Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and team members, and we are reviewing this incident,” an American Airlines spokesperson said in a statement.
The tug was operated by a United Airlines worker, and the airline said “we are ensuring he receives any necessary support and care.”
The FAA is investigating the cause of the collision.
The collision comes one day after seven people were killed when a medical transport helicopter crashed in a Philadelphia neighborhood.
Two days earlier, an American Airlines passenger jet and a Black Hawk helicopter collided in midair and crashed into the Potomac River near Reagan National Airport near Washington, D.C., killing all 67 people aboard the two aircraft.

The crash happened around 6:58 p.m. in the 0-100 block of West Twya Street at O’Hare, Chicago police said.
A United Airlines tug came into contact with the wing of an aircraft as it attempted to cross the taxiway, officials said. American Airlines confirms it was one of their aircraft, an Air Wisconsin flight that had just landed in Chicago from Kalamazoo, Michigan.
The driver of the tug was pinned under the vehicle when it flipped over due to the collision.
The driver, a 64-year-old man, was taken to Lutheran General Hospital in critical condition with injuries to his head and lower body, but he was stabilized, Chicago police said.

The accident delayed passengers from getting off the plane for a bit, no injuries were reported on the plane. Officials also said there were no significant impact to airport operations.

“At approximately 7 p.m. Saturday, a tug vehicle made contact with Air Wisconsin Flight 6181 at O’Hare International Airport. No injuries were reported on the plane and passengers were transported to the terminal. There was no significant impact on airport operations.”
American Airlines issued the following statement:
“After safely landing at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), American Eagle flight 6181, operated by Air Wisconsin from Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport (AZO) to ORD, came into contact with a tug on an active taxiway. Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and team members, and we are reviewing this incident.”
United Airlines issued the following statement:
“On Saturday evening, a United tug at O’Hare made contact with another airline’s aircraft while it was taxiing. The United employee was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, and we are ensuring he receives any necessary support and care.”
No further information was immediately available.

The Scout name is back: thanks to Volkswagen, the nameplate originally attached to International Harvester’s pickup and SUV between the ’60s and ’80s is now returning to the market in all-electric guise, with the Traveler and the Terra. The original vehicle that served as inspiration for VW’s new venture has a fascinating history: one of the first modern SUVs, it acted as the blueprint for fun, rugged recreational vehicles, a category that didn’t really exist at the time.
Scout Motors is an American automaker that was established in 2022 to produce electric off-road vehicles. It is currently owned by Volkswagen Group, which acquired the rights to the brand from International Harvester. The brand is an entirely new company but will build on the legacy of the original Scout off-roaders, launching two models: an SUV and a pickup truck on a new electric box-frame chassis platform, which will be produced in Blythewood, South Carolina.

The history of International Harvester, the company that built the original Scout, goes back all the way to 1907, when it started producing pickup trucks, tractors, and other agricultural equipment. Throughout the first half of the 20th century, and the beginning of its second half, both pickups and SUVs were considered strictly utilitarian vehicles, meant to be used as workhorses on farms and construction sites.
The world of farming heavily informed the design of the Scout, which was originally intended to be a competitor for the Jeep. The Jeep itself had started out as a military vehicle before being adopted by the agricultural industry; now, both the Jeep and the Scout were crossing the line between workhorse and recreational vehicle. International Harvester even ran a promotion aimed at farmers, seen in the advert above, which gave out a free Scout with a tractor purchase.
While the Scout’s origins may lie in farmers’ fields, the company had bigger ambitions for it: International Harvester wanted to explore the possibility of an off-road vehicle bought and driven for recreational purposes, a reality which was already beginning to materialize with the Jeep. The arrival Scout further cemented the idea that off-roaders could be more than just spartan, stripped-down working machines: in an era of post-war prosperity, the recreational SUV offered the prospect of off-roading trips and fun in the great outdoors. In the decades that followed, countless other automakers followed suit with their own SUVs, to the point where the SUV is now one of the most popular options when buying a family car in the US.

The design process that led to the creation of the Scout was not without a few bumps in the road. The original vision, as recalled by chief designer Ted Ornas, involved a body made up mostly of plastic components; International Harvester envisioned a potential collaboration with Goodyear, which had previous experience of producing plastic components during World War II.

However, by 1959, it had been established that the cost of producing a plastic body would be too high. The direction of the Scout’s design was changed, with a steel body becoming the preferred option instead. The production timeline began to move quickly, and the first Scout was introduced to the world only a few months later in 1960.
Early all-terrain vehicles exclusively prioritized practical capabilities, with no regard given to passenger comfort or advanced tech features, due to their role as work vehicles. The Scout, however, began to introduce the idea of a pickup or SUV being used as a family daily driver or recreational off-roader; as a result, comfort began to gain more importance.

While the earliest Scouts were still fairly bare-bones, over the course of the model’s lifespan, additional features were introduced, such as carpeting, door panels, upgraded seats and heating systems. This made the Scout a viable choice for everyday driving and passenger transport, rather than a simple “engine-and-four-wheels” means of hauling cargo.
The Scout, which had originally been introduced as a pickup truck, ended up being a truly chameleonic vehicle, with several different body styles as well as removable components that allowed the vehicle to serve different purposes. Throughout its life cycle, the Scout was sold as a pickup truck and an SUV, with hard-top and soft-top options available. There were also some more left-field body layouts introduced over the years, which are now considered rarities: the Campermobile variant was fitted with dining and sleeping units, as well as a retracting chemical toilet. The Sno-Star package, meanwhile, was introduced in the 1970s and converted the Scout into a snowplow.
The first model of the Scout was called the Scout 80, sold between 1960 and 1965. In 1964, the company began to approach the milestone of 100,000 Scout units built, and decided to celebrate with a special edition to mark the occasion. This rare Scout was called the Red Carpet Edition, and was marketed as a premium model with only 3,000 units built. It had a white paint job and a red interior, with a full-length headliner and full floor mats; a silver-plated medallion reading “Custom” was attached to the door. Every International dealership in the US received one Red Carpet Scout, to be used for promotional purposes.
Founded in 1967 by former racing driver Peter Monteverdi, the company that carried his name was based in Switzerland and manufactured luxury and performance cars on a small scale. A decade after its creation, Monteverdi set its sights on the Scout as a potential base for a new model, and proceeded to create two separate Scout-based luxury station wagons.
The first was the Safari, which brought substantial changes to the original Scout bodywork; the second was the cheaper Sahara, which left the bodywork mostly intact but added other upgrades such as a new grille and upgraded interior. Production of both models ended in 1982, shortly after the Scout left the market.
The Scout might not sound like the best candidate for a racing career, but it did collect a few accomplishments in the world of off-road racing. This is particularly true of the Super Scout II, a dedicated off-roading version of the Scout II – the model’s second generation, produced between 1971 and 1980. In 1977, Jerry Boone drove a Super Scout II in the iconic Baja 1000 race, finishing first in the production 4×4 vehicle category. The Scout claimed a few more victories throughout the second half of the 1970s and the start of the 80s, at several off-roading events including the Baja 500, Baja 1000, Parker 400, and Mint 400.
