Unai Emery interview: Jhon Duran exit means Aston Villa out to reshape attack with emphasis on ‘recovering talents’ | Football News
In the week that Aston Villa confirmed their place in the last 16 of the Champions League, they also sold their top scorer. Jhon Duran’s departure will be a disappointment to some. The challenge for Unai Emery is to ensure the changes make Villa stronger.
Dealing with the twin tests of the Premier League and Europe has been a theme of the season. They go to Wolves on Saturday after the high of that victory over Celtic on Wednesday knowing that they have not won after a European game since September.
But these past few weeks, in which Diego Carlos and Emiliano Buendia have also left the building, have included the added distraction of the transfer window. How is the man expected to manage all these moving parts coping with the myriad demands?
“Always, in football, it is a busy time,” Emery tells Sky Sports. “Even when you are resting, even when you are on holiday, always our minds are thinking something around football, around the squad, around the players, around the objectives we can face.”
Another constant topic of the campaign has been how to accommodate Duran alongside Ollie Watkins in the Villa team. It was a conundrum that Emery was never able to solve. Their last game together, for half an hour in Monaco, was not a success.
Speaking at the club’s training ground, as the screens playing Sky Sports News tell of interest in Joao Felix, Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford, Emery explains his plans for life post-Duran. Do not expect him to try to replace the Colombian striker like for like.
“We are in a new way,” he insists. “I am practising how we can play with Donyell Malen. The club is working [on players] to join us but, of course, now we have players in the squad ready to play, ready to be versatile as well and to play in different positions.”
Malen, a £21m signing from Borussia Dortmund, made his debut on the right wing off the bench against West Ham but Emery believes he can use him as a striker if needed. It is a better solution, perhaps. Players who can cover Watkins but also play with him.
“Ollie has always been consistent and usually he can play because he is a very strong player, physically as well, playing 90 minutes in a row of matches. But of course we have to have one plan B in case he is not available for 90 minutes or to play some matches.
“But we have players in the squad with this possibility. Donyell Malen and Morgan Rogers played as a striker. Of course, we are watching the transfer window’s last days, if we can sign a striker a striker with the possibility to be versatile in the attacking third.”
Versatility has been essential of late. Against West Ham, an injury to Tyrone Mings required Lucas Digne to play as a makeshift centre-back. Against Celtic, Boubacar Kamara played there with Matty Cash’s early exit forcing Lamare Bogarde to right-back.
“The players we have I am very proud of how they respond in different circumstances with the level we need to achieve. We drew at home to West Ham but we reacted very well against Celtic last Wednesday and the response was coming quick.
“The most important thing is that they respond not after but before, when we need them, how they are prepared to do it. This is what I am most proud of. I can feel the players are always open to help and to support every decision that I have to make.”
Getting more from players is what Emery does. It is worth reminding that nine of the starting line-up that beat Celtic were at the club when he arrived in October 2022, with Villa languishing in the bottom six of the Premier League table. He improves players.
He fixes them too, preferring to coax the best from a talent that had not been maximised than take someone with a lower ceiling. This is something Monchi, Villa’s president of football operations, referenced when addressing the interest in Joao Felix and Asensio.
‘Recovering talents’
Putting Monchi’s comments to Emery, in which he called him the best at ‘recovering talents’, he replies: “We worked in Sevilla for four years together. He is speaking about two players, they are not playing in their club now consistently, Asensio and Joao Felix.”
“They are potential players, maybe we can add, but we have other players waiting on our list.” The same, of course, could be said of Rashford. “If some of them are coming, this is my challenge, try to get the best of them and try to be protagonists with them.
“But I am positive about the process, the demand we face with the players we have. As a team, we have John McGinn back from injury. Jacob Ramsey as well, hopefully we can get Ramsey the consistency for the next month like he did not have last year.
“Really, this is my motivation, how we can manage as well the player that we have and how we can manage as well the objective we have in front of us.” The next objective? Well, that is simple. Put Europe to the back of their minds and beat Wolves on Saturday.
“After playing in Europe, the motivation we have to play in the Premier League should be the same. We only need to rest, get good sleep, recover energy and then play. This is how we want to build our team, our mentality as players, as a team and as a club.
“Of course, you have to enjoy it as well. Playing different competitions, matches every few days. We are focusing on Wolves. It means a lot for the supporters. We will try to get our best performances collectively, individually, try to compete and try to win.
“Each match is a challenge. Now, the most important is against Wolves. My interest in winning is the same as the Champions League. Even more so in the Premier League because it is through the Premier League that we are going to achieve our objectives.”
Watch Wolves vs Aston Villa live on Sky Sports Premier League from 5pm; kick-off 5.30pm
In a recent interview, Aston Villa manager Unai Emery discussed the departure of Jhon Duran and the club’s plans to reshape their attack with a focus on “recovering talents.”Duran, who recently left Villa for a new challenge, was a key player in the team’s attack. Emery acknowledged his contributions but emphasized that the club is now looking to refocus their strategy.
“We thank Jhon for his time with us and wish him all the best in his future endeavors,” Emery said. “But now, we are looking to reshape our attack and bring in players who can help us achieve our goals.”
Emery revealed that the club is placing a strong emphasis on “recovering talents” – players who may have been overlooked or undervalued in the past but have the potential to make a big impact.
“We believe that there are many talented players out there who just need the right opportunity to shine,” Emery explained. “We are committed to finding and developing these players to help strengthen our squad.”
Fans of Aston Villa can look forward to seeing some new faces in the team as Emery and his staff work to reshape the attack and bring in fresh talent. With a focus on recovering talents, the club is aiming to build a stronger and more competitive squad for the upcoming season.

CBS says it will turn over an unedited transcript of its October interview with Kamala Harris to the Federal Communications Commission, part of President Donald Trump’s ongoing fight with the network over how it handled a story about his opponent.
Trump sued CBS for $10 billion over the “60 Minutes” interview, claiming it was deceptively edited to make Harris look good. Published reports said CBS’ parent company, Paramount, has been talking to Trump’s lawyers about a settlement.
The network said Friday that it was compelled by Brendan Carr, Trump’s appointee as FCC chairman, to turn over the transcripts and camera feeds of the interview for a parallel investigation by the commission. “60 Minutes” has resisted releasing transcripts for this and all of its interviews, to avoid second-guessing of its editing process.
The case, particularly a potential settlement, is being closely watched by advocates for press freedom and by journalists within CBS, whose lawyers called Trump’s lawsuit “completely without merit” and promised to vigorously fight it after it was filed.
The Harris interview initially drew attention because CBS News showed Harris giving completely different responses to a question posed by correspondent Bill Whitaker in clips that were aired on “Face the Nation” on Oct. 6 and the next night on “60 Minutes.” The network said each clip came from a lengthy response by Harris to Whitaker’s question, but they were edited to fit time constraints on both broadcasts.
In his lawsuit, filed in Texas on Nov. 1, Trump charged it was deceptive editing designed to benefit Harris and constituted “partisan and unlawful acts of voter interference.”
Trump, who turned down a request to be interviewed by “60 Minutes” during the campaign, has continued his fight despite winning the election less than a week after the lawsuit was filed.
The network has not commented on talks about a potential settlement, reported by the Wall Street Journal and New York Times. Paramount executives are seeking Trump administration approval of a sale of the company to another entertainment firm, Skydance.
ABC News in December settled a defamation lawsuit by Trump over statements made by anchor George Stephanopoulos, agreeing to pay $15 million toward Trump’s presidential library rather than engage in a public fight. Meta has reportedly paid $25 million to settle Trump’s lawsuit against the company over its decision to suspend his social media accounts following the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.

This story was first published on Jan. 31, 2025. It was updated on Feb. 1, 2025, to correct the amount of damages President Donald Trump is seeking in his lawsuit against CBS. He is seeking $10 billion, not $10 million.
In a groundbreaking decision, CBS has agreed to hand over the transcripts of Vice President Kamala Harris’ interview on ’60 Minutes’ to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). This move comes after the FCC launched an investigation into the interview, following allegations of bias and misinformation. The interview, which aired in October 2021, sparked controversy due to the tough questioning of Harris by correspondent Norah O’Donnell. Critics accused O’Donnell of being overly aggressive and biased in her line of questioning, prompting calls for the FCC to investigate.
CBS initially resisted handing over the transcripts, citing journalistic integrity and the protection of sources. However, after facing mounting pressure from the FCC, the network has now agreed to cooperate and provide the transcripts for review.
This decision could have far-reaching implications for the media industry, as it sets a precedent for the FCC to intervene in cases of alleged bias and misinformation in news reporting. It also raises questions about the limits of journalistic freedom and the role of regulatory agencies in ensuring fair and balanced reporting.
As the investigation unfolds, many will be watching closely to see how this case may impact the future of journalism and the relationship between the media and government regulators. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

#CBS #agrees #hand #Minutes #Harris #interview #transcripts #FCCCBS staff alarmed by reports of settlement talks with Trump over ‘60 Minutes’ Harris interview
CNN
—
Journalists, including some at CBS News, are expressing alarm at reports that CBS parent company Paramount Global is trying to settle a legally dubious lawsuit lodged by President Donald Trump last fall.
Trump sued CBS after an October “60 Minutes” interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris – Trump’s opponent in the presidential campaign – included an edit that Trump said was unfairly favorable to Harris. Despite legal experts’ widespread assertion that CBS’ editorial judgment was protected by the First Amendment, The New York Times Thursday night reported that a settlement was in the works.
That sparked outage in CBS’ newsroom.
“Trump’s lawsuit was a joke, but if we settle, we become the laughingstock,” a CBS correspondent said on condition of anonymity.
CBS in October called the suit meritless and said at the time “we will vigorously defend against it.” A Paramount spokesperson on Friday declined to comment. A lawyer for Trump, Edward Paltzik, did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but he told The Times that “real accountability for CBS and Paramount will ensure that the president is compensated for the harm done to him.”
The Times noted that “a settlement would be an extraordinary concession by a major U.S. media company to a sitting president, especially in a case in which there is no evidence that the network got facts wrong or damaged the plaintiff’s reputation.”
Indeed, a settlement by Paramount could look like a payoff. Specifically, it would look like a big check to Trump (or his presidential library, following in ABC and Meta’s footsteps) in exchange for regulatory approval of Paramount’s pending deal with Skydance Media.
“That’s called a bribe,” Richard Painter, a former White House ethics lawyer for President George W. Bush, commented on X.
Is it the cost of doing business in the Trump era? Some business leaders appear to believe so. But settling with Trump would also cost CBS some of its hard-won credibility.
The suit stemmed from “60 Minutes” correspondent Bill Whitaker’s sit-down last October with Harris.
Observers noticed that CBS aired two different answers from Harris to a single question about why Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was “not listening” to the United States. The answer Harris gave in a preview clip differed from the answer she gave on the actual “60 Minutes” broadcast.
Trump and his allies claimed that CBS had manipulated the interview to make the vice president look better. As criticism mounted and Trump threatened to sue, CBS said there was nothing nefarious about the editing; “the interview was not doctored,” and the newsmagazine “did not hide any part of the Vice President’s answer to the question at issue,” CBS News senior VP for legal affairs Gayle C. Sproul said.
Sproul also cited case law that defends editing and news judgments, noting that “editing is a necessity for all broadcasters to enable them to present the news in the time available, and that is what ’60 Minutes’ did here, as it does with its other reports.”
Trump sued anyway. His lawyers filed a complaint in US District Court in the Northern District of Texas, alleging CBS violated the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act, a consumer protection law.
Legal experts contacted by CNN at the time called the suit “frivolous;” “ridiculous junk;” and laughable on its face. From the alleged damages ($10 billion!) to the decision to give Fox News the scoop about the suit, it had all the hallmarks of a political PR stunt.
But a few days after the suit was filed, Trump won the election. All of a sudden, the suit posed a serious threat to the news division’s parent company, Paramount Global, according to a person involved in the matter.
That’s because the merger requires the blessing of the Trump administration, in part because CBS owns local stations that are licensed by the Federal Communications Commission, known as the FCC.
Outside analysts, citing Trump’s transactional nature, predicted that Paramount may have a hard time getting the necessary federal approvals. Brendan Carr, who Trump promoted to chair the FCC, recently revived a pro-Trump group’s complaint about the “60 Minutes” interview. Back in November, he said the complaint would probably factor into the agency’s review of the Paramount-Skydance deal.
On Friday, CBS confirmed that the FCC sent the company a “letter of inquiry” asking the network to hand over the unedited transcript and tapes of the Harris interview.
“We are working to comply with that inquiry as we are legally compelled to do,” a CBS spokesperson told CNN.
As an FCC license-holder, CBS is obliged to respond to reasonable requests from the government agency. But those requests are typically about technicalities like broadcast transmission signals, not the raw materials of a news program like “60 Minutes.”
The notion of Paramount caving to Trump has sparked condemnation. After the Wall Street Journal two weeks ago reported that settlement talks were a possibility, Sen. Bernie Sanders urged CBS to “stand tall.”
Sanders wrote on X, “CBS may be reaching a legal settlement with Trump because he didn’t like how a campaign interview with Kamala was edited. Really? If CBS caves, the belief that we have an independent media protected by the First Amendment is undermined.”
Trump’s history of bullying media companies suggests that a payout by Paramount won’t stop his pressure campaigns.
In the weeks before his inauguration, ABC agreed to donate $15 million to Trump’s future presidential library to settle a defamation lawsuit against the network. Earlier this week Meta agreed to a $22 million payout over another Trump lawsuit.
Recently, reports have surfaced that CBS staff are alarmed by the possibility of settlement talks between the network and Donald Trump over his recent interview with Vice President Kamala Harris on “60 Minutes.” The interview, which aired earlier this month, has garnered significant attention and controversy due to Trump’s behavior during the segment.According to sources, Trump’s team has been in discussions with CBS executives about a potential settlement to prevent the release of any additional footage or outtakes from the interview. This has raised concerns among staff members at the network, who fear that such a settlement would compromise their journalistic integrity and independence.
Many employees at CBS have expressed their dismay over the reports, with some voicing their frustration and disappointment on social media. They believe that any attempts to suppress or manipulate the interview footage would be a violation of their commitment to unbiased reporting and transparency.
In response to the growing backlash, CBS has released a statement reaffirming their commitment to journalistic integrity and independence. They have assured staff members and viewers that they will not be swayed by outside pressure or influence, and will continue to uphold the highest standards of journalism.
As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how CBS will navigate these challenging circumstances and uphold their principles in the face of potential settlement talks with Trump. Stay tuned for further developments on this story.

WWE star issues challenge to Stephanie McMahon after Pat McAfee interview
Stephanie McMahon recently appeared on The Pat McAfee Show to discuss her life inside and outside the wrestling business. The former WWE Chairwoman told a story about her dislike of cats, prompting Natalya to issue a unique challenge.
During a light-hearted chat about animals, McMahon told McAfee she has not liked cats since childhood. Triple H’s wife claimed they “mess with” her and recalled how a cat bit her middle finger when she was in daycare.
Natalya’s love of cats has been referenced on WWE programming for many years. In an interview with Denise Salcedo before the Royal Rumble, the former SmackDown Women’s Champion vowed to change McMahon’s mind about the animal:
“I do have a bone to pick with Stephanie McMahon. Stephanie said on Pat McAfee’s show that she wasn’t a cat person, and I was heartbroken! My cat’s were heartbroken. We were hurting so much hearing that Stephanie doesn’t like cats [laughs]. I was so devastated. I just wanted to send her a text and say that we’re gonna change your mind, Steph.” [1:02 – 1:24]
Natalya even created an Instagram dedicated to her cats. The account currently has 142k followers, more than many WWE Superstars.
Natalya wants Stephanie McMahon to take inspiration from Bayley
In recent years, 2024 Women’s Royal Rumble winner Bayley has become a self-confessed “crazy cat lady” thanks to Natalya.
Natalya is convinced she can turn Stephanie McMahon into a cat person if she is given the opportunity:
“I converted Bayley from being a dog person into a mega cat lover. Yes, I made Bayley into a crazy cat lady, and I’m gonna do the same with Stephanie McMahon. I promise you. That’s a challenge, Steph.” [1:27 – 1:37]
The 2025 Royal Rumble will take place in Indianapolis, Indiana, on February 1. Liv Morgan and Natalya are the only participants who have appeared in every Women’s Royal Rumble since the match debuted in 2018.
Do you think Natalya will turn Stephanie into a cat person? Hit the discuss button and let us know.

Those cuts include faculty and staff layoffs and the elimination of intercollegiate athletics, as well as some academic departments and degree programs.
Cutrer expressed compassion for the campus community’s shock, anger and grief but was resolute that the cuts were a last and necessary resort to address SSU’s $24 million deficit.
“A lot of the programs that we will be losing have done everything right in terms of the education,” she said, “But we’re in a financial crisis. And, it’s not just us. We’re on the leading edge of dealing with it, but you’re going to see more or less the same thing going on at different institutions around the nation.”
Cutrer also responded to criticism that SSU leadership has failed to articulate a clear vision for the institution going forward, or strategies to revive enrollment, under the specter of deep cuts and crisis.
She discussed a lack of recruitment and marketing in the past, and a plan to double down on relationships with community colleges and high schools, attract older students and cater academic offerings to the needs of local businesses.

2nd interview scheduled for Cowboys OC frontrunner as new candidate emerges
Oct 27, 2024; Detroit, Michigan, USA; Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs (26) celebrates with running backs coach Scottie Montgomery after scoring a touchdown against the Tennessee Titans in the first quarter at Ford Field. Mandatory Credit: Lon Horwedel-Imagn Images The Cowboys appear to be closing in on their next offensive coordinator, but names of candidates are still being added to the mix.
Reports indicate that Arizona offensive line coach Klayton Adams is interviewing in-person at The Star on Friday. It’s the second interview for the 41-year-old, following a previous virtual conversation with the front office.
Though he has not yet been in an OC role, Adams is considered an up-and-comer within coaching circles and is thought by many to be the strong frontrunner for the job in Dallas, where newly-named head coach Brian Schottenheimer will call his own plays during games.
But a member of Dan Campbell’s staff in Detroit is also getting a look from the Cowboys, per reports. According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, the team also interviewed Lions running backs coach and assistant head coach Scottie Montgomery for the position.
According to multiple sources, the Cowboys interviewed Detroit running backs coach Scottie Montgomery for their offensive coordinator opening. Add him to list of Klayton Adams, Kevin Koger.
— Todd Archer (@toddarcher) January 31, 2025
Montgomery, 46, worked as the Colts’ running backs coach in 2021 and 2022 after a long stint in the college ranks in various roles, including OC duties at both Maryland and Duke and three years as head coach at East Carolina.
While his name may not be one that most Cowboys fans are immediately familiar with, his former coordinator in Detroit has no doubt he’s ready for the next step in his NFL coaching journey.
“He’s got a unique perspective because he’s been in that head chair at the college level, and you feel that when you’re in the meeting room,” Ben Johnson said just last month of Montgomery, per The Detroit News. “He understands how lonely it can be at the top at times.”
Johnson now finds himself at the top in Chicago, and he believes Montgomery is on the same track.
“He’s certainly ready to call plays,” Johnson added. “He’s done that in the past. Whenever he gets that opportunity, he’ll do that. And I think he’s going to be a heck of a great head coach one day when he gets that chance.”
Under Montgomery’s tutelage, the Lions finished the 2024 season ranked sixth in the league in rushing yards and yards per carry and were tied for the second-most rushing touchdowns. The previous year, Detroit ranked fifth in the same yardage categories and were tied for league lead in ground scores.
Falcons tight ends coach Kevin Koger has also sat down with the Cowboys about their offensive coordinator vacancy. Additionally, former Browns and Bills OC Ken Dorsey was supposedly drawing interest from the Dallas front office, but no interview with him has been made public.

Bucs Interview Internal Candidate Josh Grizzard for OC Position
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced on Wednesday morning that they have completed their first internal interview with Pass Game Coordinator Josh Grizzard for their open offensive coordinator role. The Bucs have met virtually with several potential replacements for Liam Coen, who was named the Jacksonville Jaguars’ new head coach last Friday. Grizzard becomes the first in-person interview of the search process.
Grizzard entered his first year with the Bucs in 2024, joining Todd Bowles’ staff as pass game coordinator. Prior to his arrival in Tampa Bay, Grizzard spent seven years with the Miami Dolphins where he served as a quality control coach (2017-19, 2022-23) and wide receivers coach (2020-21). Grizzard contributed to an offense that finished the 2023 season ranked first in yards per game (401.3), passing yards per game (265.5) and yards per carry (5.1), while ranking second in yards per play (6.5), net yards per pass attempt (8.0) and points scored per game (29.2). During his time as Miami’s wide receivers coach, Grizzard worked closely with Jaylen Waddle, who established the NFL’s then-rookie-reception record in 2021 with 104 receptions for a franchise-rookie-record 1,015 receiving yards.
Previously, Grizzard worked as a graduate assistant/quality control coach for Duke University (2013-16) where he coached current New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones. Grizzard helped the Blue Devils to their best three-year stretch (2013-15) in school history, which included 27 wins, an ACC Coastal division title and three consecutive bowl appearances.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have reportedly interviewed internal candidate Josh Grizzard for the vacant offensive coordinator position. Grizzard, who currently serves as the team’s quarterbacks coach, is seen as a strong candidate to take over the role after the departure of former OC Byron Leftwich.Grizzard has been with the Buccaneers organization since 2019 and has worked closely with star quarterback Tom Brady during his time with the team. His knowledge of the offense and strong relationship with the players make him a natural fit for the position.
It will be interesting to see if Grizzard ultimately lands the job and how he will bring his own unique touch to the Buccaneers’ high-powered offense. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
