  • ‘Invincible’ Creator Robert Kirkman Unmasks the Heightened Stakes of Season 3

This article was written for the
March ’25 issue of Animation Magazine (No. 348).

Prime Video’s superhero saga, Invincible, is soaring into its third eight-episode season this month with the compelling story of teenager Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) and his violent escapades as a caped crimefighter saddled with the dark legacy of Omni-Man, his extraterrestrial father (J.K. Simmons).

Created by The Walking Dead’s Robert Kirkman and crafted from the acclaimed 2003-2018 Image comic-book series by Kirkman and artists Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley, Skybound Entertainment and Amazon MGM Studios’ Invincible series has attracted a fierce following over its last two seasons of adult-aimed animated brutality on Prime Video, and received Emmy, Annie Award, Saturn and Critics Choice nominations along the way.

This fresh season promises more emotional confrontations with a guilt-stricken Omni-Man and Allen the Alien (Seth Rogen) teaming up to bust out of a Viltrumite prison, Mark amping up his training regime with Cecil (Walton Goggins) to don the notorious blue-and-black costume, the Guardians of the Globe dealing with conflicts internal and external, and Mark’s superpowered half-brother Oliver growing at an accelerated rate as Mark strives to shelter his loved ones.

Bigger, Wilder, Crazier: The third season of ‘Invincible’ introduces Mark’s transformative blue suit era in the storyline and features bigger, wilder and more intense narratives that echo what was set up in the first season of the show.

    Amping Up the Action

“I think the center of the show is really Mark Grayson’s evolution and Invincible growing as a superhero and learning things as a superhero and making mistakes,” Kirkman tells Animation Magazine. “So we saw a lot of that in Season 2. He’s definitely maturing. He’s doing a lot of training, he’s doing a lot of preparing. He knows from Anissa’s visit that there’s more conflict brewing and bigger threats looming on the horizon that he needs to prepare for. That propulsion is something that’s really important to us. We’re always moving forward and throwing as many problems as possible at Mark and the other characters. Season 3 is where we’re really stepping on the gas. It kicks off and hits the ground running. If you thought Season 2 was fast paced, you haven’t seen anything yet.”

“We’re always moving forward and throwing as many problems as possible at Mark and the other characters. Season 3 is where we’re really stepping on the gas. It kicks off and hits the ground running. If you thought Season 2 was fast paced, you haven’t seen anything yet.”

    — Creator/exec producer Robert Kirkman

Executive producer and showrunner Simon Racioppa believes that part of Invincible’s promise and appeal derive from the fact that the writers never forget what has happened before.

“There’s going to be repercussions of things that happened in Season 1 that are going to affect our characters in Season 3,” Racioppa adds. “Nothing ever resets. A lot of our characters are carrying emotional trauma from things that happened back in Season 1. It’s really important to be true to that all the way through the run of the show. It’s never like, ‘Oh, it’s time for another adventure on Invincible.’ You could probably just start with episode one and watch the whole series all the way through and it almost doesn’t feel like there’s any gap between the seasons. Season 3 will pick up right off the end of Season 2. And we hope that helps ground the series. Terrible things happened in Season 2 and that’s going to have an effect on Season 3.”

Invincible [c/o Prime Video © Amazon Content Services LLC]
Omni Family Reunion: ‘Sweet Tooth’ star Christian Convery joins the cast in S3 as Oliver Grayson. New cast members for this season also include Aaron Paul, Kate Mara, John DiMaggio, Tzi Ma, Xolo Maridueña, Simu Liu, Jonathan Banks and Doug Bradley.

One of the most popular staples in the pop culture universe is the anxiety-ridden waiting period to see what uncanny powers blossom from the offspring of superheroes as in the case of Franklin Richards of Marvel’s Fantastic Four world, or even baby Jack-Jack in Pixar’s Incredibles films. Such is the case with Mark’s younger sibling Oliver, the purple-skinned product of Omni-Man and his insectoid Thraxan wife, Andressa. Season 3 will see Oliver emerge as Kid Omni-Man!

“We did figure out in the comics a cool narrative way to have Oliver age rapidly,” Kirkman explains. “So that even though the comic kind of plays with time at a deliberate pace and you don’t really have people aging in real time, you can have that character growth from a baby to wherever we get with him, which is kind of fun. Oliver represents a lot of things in the show. It’s Nolan’s influence from afar coming into Earth, affecting Mark in some huge ways, affecting Debbie in huge ways. He’s a baby at the end of Season 2, but as you watch Season 3 you’ll see he’s growing rapidly and becoming a full-fledged character that’s an integral member of our cast and shaking everything up in a lot of really cool ways.”

Invincible [c/o Prime Video © Amazon Content Services LLC]

Kirkman feels that shifting into Season 3 the team has clearly established what this show is. “This is the Mark Grayson show,” he says. “But as we continue to adapt the comic there’s a lot more Omni-Man, which is really cool. It’s great to be working more with J.K. Simmons and having that character more present. Now we’re just getting into the details of the story and the characters and fleshing them out as much as possible and giving them interesting things to do, and getting to some really cool things from the comics that I think people are going to be excited to see.”

Fortified with 16 hours of the show now under its belt, Invincible can confidently stride into this next block of episodes knowing that the audience has a familiarity with its character roster.

Invincible [c/o Prime Video © Amazon Content Services LLC]

“It lets us go deeper into relationships, spend more time with those characters, and makes it more fun to write for too,” says Racioppa. “It’s nice having that sort of history that lets you reference that back into the characters and show what they’ve already been through affects what they’re going to do next, and their emotional state. The whole team came together in the transition. When you hit those moments it’s a beautiful high. You’re trying to achieve something great that has an emotional resonance that hopefully will affect our audience.”

As fans of the comic-book series know, Mark Grayson gets a brand new blue costume at this point in the unfolding story and as seen in the teaser trailers it makes a bold statement.

Invincible [c/o Prime Video © Amazon Content Services LLC]

    Changing Colors

“There were a lot of variations done by the design team, Shaun O’Neil and Dou Hong and her team, trying to figure out how to interpret the blue costume from the comics,” Kirkman notes. “The costume change is a superhero trope. Spider-Man gets the black costume and everybody hates the black costume. Then two years later they get rid of the black costume and everybody doesn’t want to go back to the old costume. And that kind of thing actually happened. There were letters from people who didn’t like the blue-and-black costume. When we retired it and went back to the original costume there were lots of people complaining. Now that we’re doing it in the show, the fanbase that read the comics and knows what’s coming, they’re like, ‘Ah, the blue-and-black era! We’re so excited.’ I want to say, ‘You guys weren’t so excited when it started.’

“I wrote the comic for 16 years and I believe there was a week or two gap between writing the last issue and starting the pilot for this series,” Kirkman says. “I just love this world and these characters and feel really fortunate to have the opportunity to do it again. What’s most exciting to me is doing this as a second draft of the comic if you will, and finding those things to improve upon. It’s a fun process, I’m working with a lot of good people, and the fan response has been tremendous. And they haven’t even seen Season 3 yet. Just wait!”

Based on Image’s “Invincible” comic books by The Walking Dead’s Kirkman and artists Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley, the adaptation explores Mark’s struggles as he tries to become the city’s avenger while avoiding his Viltrumite father’s dark legacy.

  • Invincible: The Most Important New Characters to Expect in Season 3

With the debut of Invincible: Season 3 fast approaching, Prime Video revealed the new lineup of voice actors joining the series this time around. That group includes Aaron Paul as Powerplex, John DiMaggio as The Elephant, and Simu Liu as Dupli-Kate’s brother Multi-Paul. But the most intriguing reveals in this announcement are also the most mysterious. Both Breaking Bad’s Jonathan Banks and Hellraiser’s Doug Bradley are also joining the cast, but we don’t know which characters they’re playing.

It’s safe to say that Prime Video is holding back those reveals so as not to spoil some big developments coming up in Season 3. Which Invincible characters could Banks and Bradley be playing? And for that matter, what’s the deal with Christian Convery’s Oliver? How is he aging up so quickly, and what does it mean now that Invincible has a new sidekick? Here’s what you need to know about the most important new characters we think are appearing this season.

Warning: some basic plot spoilers for the Invincible comic ahead!

    Jonathan Banks as Conquest

Breaking Bad star Jonathan Banks is joining the cast of Invincible: Season 3, but Prime Video isn’t revealing which character he’s playing. That said, we have a pretty good idea of the role for which Banks has been chosen. He’s a master of playing grizzled, hardened killers, and that immediately brings to mind one particular villain from the Invincible comic.

Most likely, Banks is playing Conquest. This villain first debuted in 2009’s Invincible #61. Like Steven Yeun’s Invincible and JK Simmons’ Omni-Man, Conquest is a Viltrumite. Even by the standards of his people, Conquest is an especially strong and powerful warrior, carrying the scars of many a successful battle.

    undefined
Art by Ryan Ottley. (Image Credit: Image Comics/Skybound)

Conquest appears in the aftermath of a particularly devastating conflict on Earth, bringing with him an ultimatum from the Viltrumite Empire. Either Invincible carries out his duty and conquers his homeworld in the name of the empire, or Conquest will kill him and finish the job himself. Thus begins the most violent and desperate battle of Mark Grayson’s life (so far).

Season 2 already set the stage for this confrontation when Mark was forced to accept his father’s burden as the future conqueror of Earth. We’ll likely see that tease pay off in Season 3, as Mark is forced to make a one-man stand against Conquest. As we’ve seen in past seasons, Mark is still too young and inexperienced to truly hold his own against veteran Viltrumite soldiers. But somehow he’ll have to find a way, because the alternative means his own death and the enslavement of his world.

Who Is Doug Bradley Playing in Invincible Season 3?

Banks is pretty much a shoo-in for Conquest, but what about Bradley? Bradley is best known for giving life to iconic horror villain Pinhead in the various Hellraiser movies. We have to assume he’s also playing a villain in this series, but which one?

    undefined
Art by Ryan Ottley. (Image Credit: Image Comics/Skybound)

Two characters come to mind, given the way the comic book series unfolds and where the animated series is in that timeline. The first is Dinosaurus, a character who debuted in 2009’s Invincible #68. Dinosaurus is the next major villain to appear on the scene after Conquest, though his motivations could hardly be more different. Dinosaurus seeks to heal the world from the toxic effects of human civilization. At one point, he targets Las Vegas for destruction, seeing the city as a blight upon the natural beauty of the desert.

Bradley’s gravelly voice could certainly help lend extra gravitas to a villain who is admittedly pretty cartoonish in appearance. Dinosaurus is a compelling character because he’s simply doing what he feels is necessary for the greater good of the world. Even Invincible comes to understand and identify with his views.

Another option is Grand Regent Thragg, the character who serves as the true main villain of the Invincible saga. Thragg is introduced fairly early into the comic book series, first appearing in 2004’s Invincible #11, but we haven’t seen any trace of him in the animated series yet. It’s about time for that to change.

    undefined
Art by Ryan Ottley. (Image Credit: Image Comics/Skybound)

Thragg is the ruler of the Viltrumite Empire. As you’d expect from a society built around survival of the fittest, Thragg is incredibly powerful. He’s thousands of years old, trained in every form of combat known to Viltrumites, and he was a major force in the civil war that nearly destroyed the empire. He’s a true nightmare on the battlefield, and he’s a character Mark and Earth’s other heroes will have to contend with sooner or later.

Bradley would certainly be ideal for this role. He has the charisma and menace to bring to life one of the most important and powerful villains in the Invincible universe. We may not see much of Thragg in Season 3, but we wouldn’t be at all surprised if the series at least teases Mark Grayson’s final and greatest antagonist.

    Christian Convery’s Oliver Grayson

Season 2 introduced Mark’s younger half-brother Oliver. As we learned, Oliver was born when Nolan fled to Thraxa and took a new lover. Half-Thraxan and half-Viltrumite, Oliver could almost pass for a normal human if not for his purple skin. That, and the fact that he ages far quicker than any human or Viltrumite.

That fact will be a major plot point in Season 3. In Season 2, Oliver had the appearance of a toddler, despite being just a few months old. By Season 3, his accelerated growth means Oliver will look like a preteen. That’s why Christian Connery has been cast to take over the role in Season 3. Oliver is now walking, talking, and even flying.

    undefined
Art by Ryan Ottley. (Image Credit: Image Comics/Skybound)

Thanks to his unique hybrid DNA, Oliver is already manifesting his powers, where it took Mark until nearly the end of his high school career to develop his superhuman strength and flight. We’ll see Oliver seek to follow in his father and brother’s footsteps in Season 3. He’ll don a costume and even take the codename Kid Omni-Man as he follows a bemused Invincible into battle.

Expect Oliver to play a huge role in the series going forward. Not only is Mark still struggling to figure out what kind of hero he wants to be, now he’s also responsible for guiding and shaping his little brother. Oliver is a powerful new ally, but also a potential liability. There’s nothing Mark fears more than having his loved ones put in danger because of his actions as Invincible. Now he has to worry about what happens to Oliver should he fail on the job.

  • Invincible Season 3’s Confirmed Release Schedule Is A Massive Relief After Season 2’s Controversy

With Invincible set to return shortly, season 3’s release schedule has officially been released, and it’s a promising update following the backlash of season 2. Despite being one of the best animated shows around, Invincible‘s second season received a lot of criticism, not because of its quality, but for its frustrating release schedule. Having waited around two-and-a-half years between seasons, fans were excited about the show finally continuing its epic story, only for it to go on hiatus for several months after four episodes. Naturally, this upset viewers and caused plenty of frustration among the fan base.

Luckily, Invincible season 3 fixed the mistake by announcing no midseason break would take place this time around. While this was a promising start for the third installment, it didn’t necessarily confirm exactly what the release schedule would look like. Thankfully, the series will be returning to its original format of three episodes on February 6, before releasing one episode weekly for the remaining five. Given how great season 2’s narrative was, it was a huge shame to see it surrounded by so much controversy, but fortunately, Invincible season 3’s story should avoid suffering from these external factors.

Invincible Season 3 Returning To Its Original Release Schedule Is Great News

The Show Is Avoiding The Same Controversy That Hurt Season 2

Now that Invincible season 3 will officially be returning to the same release schedule as season 1 and many other Prime Video shows, the conversation can go back to being about the contents of the show itself. After Invincible season 2’s gripping conclusion and fantastic character work, it’s easy to forget how good the second outing was because of the dissatisfaction among the community. In addition to viewers being upset about the midseason break, there were also complaints about how long season 2 took to arrive in the first place and even some criticism leveled at the animation.

I’m Glad Invincible’s Live-Action Movie Is Taking Its Time

The live-action Invincible movie was announced years ago, but it is still in development. Luckily, this newest update is good news for the film.

However, in comparison to how excellent the story and voice-acting were, these all seem like minor problems and not something that should’ve derailed the show. Therefore, season 3 seemingly avoiding the same fate is excellent news for the franchise, as the praise and critical acclaim that made the first season so popular should be on display once again, as long as the series can maintain its quality. There is still plenty of great material to adapt, and based on the comics, season 3’s story will likely be even more dramatic and emotional than the first two installments.

As a result, the decision to return to its original release format looks like it will fix most of the mistakes that hurt the previous season, and the return in February can hopefully restore Invincible‘s stellar reputation and remind people of why it’s one of the most talked about shows on TV.

Invincible Season 3’s Release Schedule Still Has One Minor Problem

Prime Video’s Hit Season Will Only Be Back For Six Weeks

Despite the drastically improved release schedule, Invincible season 3 does still face a potential issue. As frustrating as the midseason break was, Invincible season 2 technically had several months in the limelight because of it, for better or for worse. In contrast, season 3 releasing its first three episodes at once means it will only be around for six weeks in total before going on hiatus once again, which could be problematic. Invincible season 4’s confirmation does indicate that the release window between future seasons should be shorter going forward, but it could still be a while before it arrives.

Rather than being a hot topic for months on end, its eight episodes being condensed into six weeks could mean people move on from Invincible shortly after season 3 finishes.

This may not seem like a lot of waiting time for fans who survived the dreaded two-and-a-half-year gap previously, but it does mean season 3’s time in the spotlight could come and go very quickly. Rather than being a hot topic for months on end, its eight episodes being condensed into six weeks could mean people move on from Invincible shortly after season 3 finishes. Still, the first season managed to stay topical for a long time after it wrapped up and gained a massive community, so there is hope season 3 will follow in these footsteps and thrive.

Why Invincible Season 3’s Schedule Is Still Much Better Than Season 2’s

Fans Will Have An Easier Time Waiting For Each Season Without Enduring Midseason Breaks

Although season 3’s release schedule does still have its potential problems, it looks a lot more promising than season 2’s. The six-week lifespan may not seem overly promising on paper, but it has been Prime Video’s regular format for some of its most popular shows, with The Boys, Reacher, and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power all using the same schedule in recent seasons. It hasn’t impacted their overall popularity or relevance, it didn’t hurt Invincible season 1, and it shouldn’t hurt season 3, especially not as much as a midseason break would.

Robert Kirkman claimed Invincible will run for 7–10 seasons.

While two-part seasons have worked for shows in the past, it’s a stronger format for those with large episode counts. Invincible having just eight episodes a season doesn’t justify splitting it in half, making it understandable why audiences were upset about season 2’s direction. It halted the story’s momentum right as it was heating up, and season 3 will rightfully want to avoid the same fate. Although the current method risks the wait for season 4 feeling longer, the franchise seems to have overcome its long delay between seasons, and audiences should be more patient without an unnecessary midseason break.

After the controversy surrounding Season 2 of Invincible, fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief as the release schedule for Season 3 has been confirmed. The hit animated series, based on the comic book of the same name by Robert Kirkman, has been met with both critical acclaim and controversy since its debut.

Season 2 of Invincible faced backlash from fans and critics alike for its handling of sensitive topics, as well as its graphic violence and mature themes. Many viewers felt that the show went too far in its portrayal of certain scenes, leading to heated debates and discussions online.

However, with the announcement of Season 3’s release schedule, fans can now look forward to the continuation of the story without the fear of similar controversies arising. The show’s producers have promised to address some of the concerns raised by viewers in Season 2, while still staying true to the source material and delivering the intense and action-packed storytelling that fans have come to love.

Invincible Season 3 is set to premiere in the fall of next year, with new episodes airing weekly on Amazon Prime Video. The release schedule will give fans plenty of time to speculate and theorize about what’s to come in the next chapter of the series, and hopefully, it will deliver a satisfying conclusion to the story so far.

Overall, the confirmed release schedule for Invincible Season 3 is a massive relief for fans who have been eagerly awaiting the next installment of the show. With promises of addressing past controversies and delivering more of the intense and gripping storytelling that has made the series a hit, Season 3 is sure to be a must-watch for fans of the superhero genre.
