  • USC Trojans Fall After Iowa Hawkeyes Upset

After suffering an upset loss on the road to the unranked Iowa Hawkeyes, the USC Trojans women’s basketball team is now ranked No. 7, down from No. 4.

The biggest movers of the poll were USC and Michigan State. The Spartans moved down four spots to No. 20. Other teams like No. 14 North Carolina State, No. 17 Georgia Tech, No. 18 West Virginia, and No. 22 Florida State all moved up three spots in the latest rankings, released on Monday.

The loss to Iowa was USC’s second loss of the season, keeping them near the top of the rankings. It was a rowdy environment in Iowa as the Hawkeyes were also celebrating the jersey retirement of Iowa legend and women’s basketball star Caitlin Clark.

“I’m really impressed with the atmosphere here, the love for women’s basketball, the appreciation for what Caitlin’s done, and coach [Lisa] Bluder,” said USC coach Lindsay Gottlieb after the loss to Iowa.

Clark was in attendance among the sold-out crowd that saw Iowa beat USC and star guard JuJu Watkins. Despite the loss, USC remains one of the top teams in the country and is expected to receive a high seed in the NCAA Tournament in March.

The current top four teams in the AP Top-25 Poll consist of No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 South Carolina, No. 3 Notre Dame and No. 4 Texas.

The Longhorns, No. 5 LSU, and No. 6 UConn all moved up a spot, ahead of USC after the upset loss to Iowa.

Behind the Trojans is No. 8 Ohio State, and USC will have a chance to prove themselves against the Buckeyes on Saturday, Feb. 8. Before facing Ohio State at home, USC has a road game against the Wisconsin Badgers on Wednesday, Feb. 5.

Before losing to the Hawkeyes, the Trojans had only lost to Notre Dame and had one the most impressive resumes in the country. USC has yet to play their cross town rival, the UCLA Bruins, giving the Trojans two chances to knock off the highest-ranked team in the country.

First, USC will host UCLA in the Galen Center on Feb. 13 before the Trojans go on the road and play the Bruins in the regular season finale.

In a shocking turn of events, the USC Trojans were handed a stunning defeat by the Iowa Hawkeyes in a nail-biting game. The Trojans, who were favored to win, were unable to overcome the determined Hawkeyes, who played with tenacity and skill.

The Trojans’ offense struggled to find their rhythm against the Hawkeyes’ strong defense, and their usually reliable defense faltered in the face of Iowa’s relentless attack. Despite a valiant effort, the Trojans were unable to mount a comeback and fell to the Hawkeyes in a heartbreaking loss.

This upset serves as a reminder that in college football, anything can happen on any given day. The Trojans will need to regroup and refocus in order to bounce back from this defeat and continue their pursuit of a successful season. Meanwhile, the Hawkeyes have proven themselves to be a force to be reckoned with, and will surely be a team to watch as the season progresses.

    INSIDE THE SERIES

    Overall: ISU leads 14-10

    In Ames: ISU leads 8-4

    Fennelly vs. TCU: 14-10

    SERIES NOTE

ISU and TCU did not meet last season as TCU forfeited the Jan. 20, 2024 contest due to injuries.

    FOUR THINGS

2 – Iowa State had two players named to the Naismith Trophy Women’s College Player of the Year Watch list earlier this season. Audi Crooks and Emily Ryan were two of 50 women’s collegiate basketball players selected to the watch list. It is the second time Ryan has been featured on the top 50 list and the first time Crooks has been added.

12 – Number of times ISU has held its opponent to 60 points or less in a game this season. The Cyclones most recently held UCF to under 60 in an 90-56 win in Hilton Coliseum.

13 – Iowa State is one of the top ballhandling teams in the country, recording a 1.35 assist/turnover ratio this season. The Cyclones rank 13th nationally and fourth in the Big 12 with the mark.

55 – Audi Crooks has scored in double figures in 55 straight games. Angie Welle holds the program’s best mark with 64 consecutive games with double-figure scoring (Nov. 29, 2000-March 18, 2002).

    1,000 POINT QUEEN

Iowa State sophomore Audi Crooks became the program’s 35th 1,000 point scorer with her 23rd point against Utah (Jan. 5). Crooks is the fastest Cyclone to score 1,000 points, reaching the mark in 49 games. She passed all-time leading scorer Ashley Joens as the fastest ISU player to 1,000 points, the previous best in 64 games. Crooks is also the third fastest Big 12 women’s basketball player to reach 1,000 points behind Courtney Paris (Oklahoma, 46) and Sheila Lambert (Baylor, 48).

Among a loaded sophomore class nationally, Crooks was the third NCAA Division I player in her class to score 1,000 points at one institution behind JuJu Watkins (USC) and Hannah Hidalgo (Notre Dame). Crooks owns the fifth best career scoring average (20.6 PPG) among active NCAA DI women’s basketball players and ranks 11th overall. Each of the top five NCAA DI career scorers are sophomores and juniors: Watkins (USC), Hidalgo (Notre Dame), Ta’Niya Latson (Florida State), Annesah Morrow (LSU), Crooks (Iowa State).

    CROOKS COOKS

Iowa State sophomore Audi Crooks has garnered national attention as one of the nation’s most exciting post players. Crooks has scored in double figures in 55 straight games and finished with 20+ points 32 times in her career. The 6-3 center scored a season-high 33 points against Drake (Nov. 24), including the game-winner with less than a second on the clock. She matched the total against Kansas (Jan. 1) in ISU’s 78-64 win over the Jayhawks.

Crooks was one of the top players in NCAA Division I for field goal percentage last season, shooting nearly 58 percent from the floor. She holds the best made field goal mark regardless of class in ISU history with 258 makes. She broke the Iowa State sophomore record against UCF (Jan. 25) with her 192nd make of the 2024-25 season.

    EMILY RYAN DISH-TRIBUTION CENTER

Emily Ryan is one of Iowa State’s most prolific point guards, recording top 10 career marks in assists, steals and blocks while becoming the program’s 34th 1,000 point scorer in March 2023. The Claflin, Kansas native has recorded 927 assists and holds the all-time best mark in program history by over 150 dimes. She is the active NCAA women’s basketball leader for assists with her career total, followed by Kentucky’s Georgia Amoore with 805 dimes.

Ryan is one of three NCAA DI women’s basketball players to record at least 1,500 points, 600 rebounds and 900 assists in her career, joining Sabrina Ionescu (Oregon) and Caitlin Clark (Iowa).

The 5-11 guard has recorded a career assist/turnover ratio of 2.00. Over 141 games, she has tallied single-game assists at every mark, 1-17 and has never finished a game with less than one assist. Ryan ranks 11th for all-time NCAA DI women’s basketball assists leaders and is 12 dimes from the Top 10.

    HILTON MAGIC

The Cyclones have been phenomenal at home during Bill Fennelly‘s tenure, compiling a 392-82 record (.827) in Hilton Coliseum, including a 195-9 (.956) mark against regular-season non-conference opponents. Iowa State has gone undefeated at home three times, most recently during the 2004-05 season.

With a win over Eastern Illinois on Dec. 15, ISU posted a spotless 8-0 non-conference record in Hilton, the 23rd time under Bill Fennelly the Cyclones finished the regular season non-conference home slate undefeated. The Cyclones finished the 2023-24 regular season 13-2 at home and 7-1 in Big 12 play. Iowa State’s 16 wins at Hilton Coliseum in 2021-22 were tied for the third-most in a season in school history.

This weekend, Iowa State will face off against No. 9 TCU in what is sure to be an exciting matchup. Both teams have had strong seasons so far, with TCU boasting an impressive 5-1 record and Iowa State sitting at 4-2.

TCU’s high-powered offense, led by quarterback Max Duggan, will be a tough test for Iowa State’s defense. However, the Cyclones have shown that they can hang with the best of them, with wins over top-ranked teams like Oklahoma and Texas already under their belt.

This game has the potential to be a high-scoring affair, with both teams capable of putting up big numbers on the scoreboard. Iowa State will need to bring their A-game on both sides of the ball if they want to come out on top against the formidable TCU Horned Frogs.

Be sure to tune in to see these two talented teams go head-to-head in what promises to be a thrilling matchup. Who will come out on top? Only time will tell.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The UNI men’s basketball team begins the month of February with a critical Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) test on Sunday afternoon as it hosts the league-leading Bradley Braves inside the McLeod Center.

Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT at the Knapp Center, with live coverage available on ESPN2 with a simulcast available on ESPN+, as well as the Panther Sports Radio Network with J.W. Cox and Kevin Boyle on the call.

Tickets for Sunday’s game can be purchased online through the UNI Ticket Office, by calling 319-273-4849 or by email at tickets@uni.edu.

Fans are also encouraged to wear pink as part of the team’s annual Hope Always Game in support of the fight against cancer. This year, the Panthers are also collecting donations of pantry items for the American Cancer Society’s Russell and Ann Gerdin Hope Lodge in Iowa City.

The Panthers will look for consecutive wins against the Braves for the first time since the 2019-20 and 2020-21 season, having won the previous matchup in Cedar Falls last February. Bradley holds a narrow 39-36 lead in the all-time series.

Entering the final full month of the regular season, Northern Iowa sits just two games back of the first-place Braves, who are tied with Drake atop the MVC standings at 9-2 in league play. UNI returns home after a tough 66-52 road loss at Drake on Wednesday night, when it struggled to defend the three-point line against the Bulldogs and gave up 21 points on 14 turnovers.

Tytan Anderson finished Wednesday’s game with a team-high 16 points and five rebounds, with Trey Campbell tallying ten points. Both Cael Schmitt and Max Weisbrod posted seven points each in the loss, as Ben Schwieger finished with six points and a team-high six assists.

Northern Iowa continues to maintain a hot shooting hand this season, ranking seventh in all of Division I with a 49.9% shooting clip, shooting over 50% in ten of its 22 games this year. UNI is also 21st nationally in effective field goal percentage (56.5%).

Anderson, the MVC’s leader in made free throws (101) and attempts (142) who also looks to continue climbing the program’s top-ten all-time steals list, leads UNI with 14.7 points per game and a team-high 6.4 rebounds a game on 57.2% shooting. Anderson is also nine assists away from becoming just the fourth player in program history to record 1,000 points, 700 rebounds and 200 assists in a UNI career, looking to join Seth Tuttle (2011-15), Eric Coleman (2004-08) and Don Lemons (1975-79) in an elite club of Panther players.

Jacob Hutson has notched 11.7 points and 3.9 rebounds, while Campbell has posted 10.8 points and a team-high 65 assists. Schwieger, who is three points shy of his 500th career point, has put up 9.4 points and 4.3 boards per game as a starter in the Panther lineup in the last 14 contests. Will Hornseth, meanwhile,is shooting at a high percentage in his freshman season, posting a 71.4% clip on 50-of-70 shooting, currently on pace to set a new single-season field goal percentage record.

    SCOUTING BRADLEY

The Braves make their annual trip to the McLeod Center amid another hot start to the season, winning 18 of its first 22 games. Bradley struggled in its last outing on Wednesday at home in a 93-70 loss to UIC.

Led by tenth year head coach Brian Wardle, the Braves were picked as the MVC’s preseason favorite to win the league’s regular season title this year, with Duke Deen as the MVC Preseason Player of the Year, earning preseason all-conference honors along with Darius Hannah and Zek Montgomery.

Bradley has been highly effective from beyond the arc, ranking second nationally with a 39.9% shooting clip. The Braves are also tenth in Division I in both free throw percentage (78.7%) and effective field goal percentage (57.4%).

Deen leads the Braves with 13.8 points a game with Montgomery posting 13.7 points and Hannah tallying 12.1 points per contest. Deen notably also leads the MVC on the season with 166 three-point attempts.

    What to Know

After two games on the road, N. Iowa is heading back home. They and the Bradley Braves will face off in a Missouri Valley battle at 4:00 p.m. ET on Sunday at McLeod Center. The Panthers are expected to win (but not by much) so they better bring their A-game into this one.

    N. Iowa is headed into this one after the oddsmakers set last week’s over/under low at 122.5, but even that wound up being too high. They took a 66-52 hit to the loss column at the hands of Drake on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Bradley unfortunately witnessed the end of their five-game winning streak on Wednesday. They wound up on the wrong side of a painful 93-70 walloping at the hands of UIC. The Braves got off to an early lead (up 13 with 13:57 left in the first quarter), but sadly they weren’t able to maintain that momentum.

Despite their loss, Bradley saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Christian Davis, who dropped a double-double on ten points and ten rebounds, was perhaps the best of all. Another player making a difference was Zek Montgomery, who earned 16 points.

    N. Iowa’s defeat dropped their record down to 13-9. As for Bradley, their loss dropped their record down to 18-4.

Sunday’s matchup is shaping up to be a masterclass in shooting: N. Iowa has been dynamite from deep this season, having made 37.1% of their threes per game. However, it’s not like Bradley struggles in that department as they’ve nailed 39.9% of their threes this season. Given these competing strengths, it’ll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.

    N. Iowa beat Bradley 74-63 in their previous meeting back in February of 2024. Does N. Iowa have another victory up their sleeve, or will Bradley turn the tables on them? We’ll have the answer soon enough.

    Odds

    N. Iowa is a slight 2-point favorite against Bradley, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Panthers as a 1.5-point favorite.

    The over/under is 139 points.

The Wildcats (10-11, 4-6 Big 12) ended a 15-game road losing streak — 12 of which occurred within the Big 12. Kansas State’s 19-point road win is tied for the largest by an unranked team against a top 3 opponent in AP Poll history, according to ESPN Research.

The win is also Kansas State’s largest against an AP top 5 team since 1951 and the Wildcats’ largest road win against an AP top 5 team in poll history.

Kansas State has won its past three games, also beating then-No. 23 West Virginia and Oklahoma State.

Coleman Hawkins added 17 points and Brendan Hausen had 15 for the Wildcats.

The Cyclones’ 29-game home winning streak was the second longest in the nation, behind Houston’s 33.

Tamin Lipsey tied a season high with 20 points for the Cyclones (17-4, 7-3). Curtis Jones added 14 and Joshua Jefferson chipped in 13.

    Takeaways

Iowa State: The Cyclones tied a season high with 18 turnovers, the second straight game they’ve finished with that many turnovers. They lost both games.

    Key moment

The Cyclones tried to claw back into the game with a 13-0 run late in the second half, but a 3-pointer from Hausen extinguished Iowa State’s hopes.
