Pistons legend Isiah Thomas reveals Bell’s palsy diagnosis
Detroit — Detroit Pistons legend Isiah Thomas recently revealed that he has been diagnosed with Bell’s palsy. He made his illness known during a guest appearance on Come And Talk 2 Me — a podcast hosted by former NBA point guard and ESPN broadcaster Mark Jackson.
The basketball Hall of Famer decided to publicize his condition during the virtual interview. While sharing a story about playing for the late Bob Knight at Indiana, the right side of Thomas’ face appeared paralyzed and a bit droopy.
“I know I have a lot of people watching, and I haven’t really told anybody, but I have Bell’s palsy,” Thomas said. “I appreciate the prayers and the love. But that’s what is happening with my mouth right now.”
Several NBA players have battled through the neurological condition over the years. Most recently, Philadelphia 76ers’ Joel Embiid played through the illness during the first round of the 2024 Eastern Conference playoffs against the New York Knicks. He averaged 33.0 points and 10.8 rebounds during the six-game series.
Thomas is widely considered the greatest player in franchise history. The No. 2 overall pick in the 1981 NBA draft established himself as one of the best point guards in league history, becoming a 12-time All-Star, two-time champion, and Finals MVP winner in 1990.
A member of the league’s 50th- and 75th-anniversary teams, Thomas played his entire 13-year career with the Pistons, averaging 19.2 points, 9.3 assists and 1.9 steals. Thomas had arguably his best season during the 1984-85 season, averaging 21.2 points and a league-best 13.9 assists across 81 games.
