    Barclays customers are continuing to experience intermittent errors with payments and transfers after serious IT problems that also affected the bank’s app and online banking.

    Customers have told the BBC it is preventing them making essential transactions, ranging from buying baby milk to completing a house move.

    Barclays says cards and cash machines can be used as normal – though some customers have said this is not the case.

    The outage began on Friday, which was pay day for many people in the UK, and the deadline for self-assessment tax returns.

    Barclays has not explained the cause of the IT problems, or how many people are affected but has apologised and says it is “working hard to fix the issue”.

    In the early hours of Saturday morning, Barclays’ website indicated that its app had begun working again – but that issues persisted with payments and transfers.

    Customers replying to Barclays’ announcement about the outage on social media have reacted with fury while reporting a series of problems it is causing them.

    One said their card had been declined despite them having funds – another said that that her January wages “had disappeared”.

    A family has told the BBC they cannot move into their new house because of the outage, branding the situation “ridiculous”.

    Scott, 27, and his wife, who is four months pregnant, said they had sold their house on Friday morning, but the money for their new home had not gone through yet due to the problems at Barclays.

    Scott told BBC News they were effectively homeless, and had been left waiting in their car at a service station in Horsham, West Sussex.

    “Because the system is down, the money can’t go through,” he said.

    “We just have to sit and wait.”

    Ruth, 39, a self-employed cleaner, told BBC News she had been trying to access money with her partner from their savings account for several hours so she could buy milk for a baby and food for five other children she is looking after at home.

    “We need the money to do shopping, our money is all in savings,” she explained.

    “I’ve got my granddaughter here who’s 11 months old, also a one-year-old, two-year-old, 12-year-old, 13-year-old, 15-year-old all at home.”

    She said she had been able to get some help from her teenage daughter, but said others might not be so fortunate.

    “There could be many single mums in the same situation with no access to money,” she told the BBC.

    Barclays is one of the UK’s largest banks, with over 20 million UK retail customers. It says it processes over 40% of the UK’s credit and debit card transactions.

    Website downdetector, which monitors outages, says thousands of people have flagged problems at the bank. On Saturday morning, it showed more than 4,000 issues had been reported with Barclays, more than double the number reported on Friday.

    Taking to social media, one mother said she could not buy milk for her baby due to the issues at Barclays.

    “My four-month-old is out of milk powder and screaming for a feed and I still haven’t been paid,” she said.

    “I’ve been in tears for hours.”

    Tax return anxiety

    Friday was the deadline for self-assessment tax returns, and some customers have said the outage has left them unable to make payments to HMRC.

    Earlier on Friday, HMRC warned that millions of people have still not filed their self-assessment tax returns, and warned of £100 fines for those who did not meet the deadline.

    However, in statement to the BBC, HMRC said it was “working closely” with Barclays to minimise any impact on customers filing their self-assessments.

    A spokesperson added: “Our services are working as normal, so customers will be able to file their returns on time. Today’s issues will not result in late payment penalties as they don’t apply until 1st March.”

    In a statement, Barclays said: “We’re in direct contact with HMRC and they are aware of the technical issues with our system.”

    It added: “We will ensure that no customer is left out of pocket because of delayed payments caused by this incident.”

    Outage after outage

    It is not the first time banking app customers have been left unable to access funds or make payments.

    PayPal suffered a brief but notable outage in November that impacted customers globally across a number of its products, including its cryptocurrency services and popular US peer-to-peer payment app, Venmo.

    Thousands of UK bank customers were affected by payment problems with some of the biggest lenders in June last year, with banks including HSBC, Nationwide, Barclays and Virgin Money all impacted by issues with a system that facilitates payments between individuals and companies.

    Some cash-strapped customers continued to feel the effects of the issue for days afterwards.

    During last July’s major global IT outage, several UK retailers were unable to take card payments and IT services were unable to access payroll after an erroneous update by antivirus company CrowdStrike affected systems worldwide.

    BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, said the problems with Barclays showed the importance of robust computer systems.

    “Once again this goes to show how cyber-security and digital resilience is so tightly integrated into our lives,” said Dan Card, BCS’ cyber-security expert.

    The lower-order aggressive batter played the first match in Kolkata but was ruled out of the next two games after picking up the injury before the second. According to news agency PTI, Rinku batted extensively in the nets on the eve of the match, trying audacious laps and sweeps against spinners, looking comfortable against pacers, and also taking throwdowns from specialist Raghavendra and assistant coach Abhishek Nayar.

    “Rinku is fit. He played the first game, hurt himself and missed the next two. But I would imagine Rinku comes back in as soon as he’s proper fit. He batted the other night and I think he’ll be ready to go tomorrow,” ten Doeschate said during the pre-match press conference.

    The last two T20Is could bring much-needed game time for Rinku who, after a quick start to his international career, hasn’t had clear opportunities to do anything of note in the last few months.

    “Particularly the other night, like I said, with Dhruv coming in at 8, I don’t think we got to see the best of him. But we do believe that it’s a big part of strategy in these games. Again, going back to my point, we want to give guys a long enough opportunity to show how good they are because we believe in the medium to long term, guys will show how good they are.”

  • Town Center mall power problems reveal other financial issues


    The power cutoff was a visible sign all is not well with the mall’s finances. Cobb County records show the mall’s owner is also behind on its property taxes, and other malls the Kohan Retail Investment Group owns have reportedly encountered financial issues.

    Kohan Retail, a New York firm that owns Town Center but not the big box stores such as Macy’s, currently owes more than $1 million in property taxes that were due Oct. 15 and now include late fees and interest, according to Cobb court records. The amount could grow if the taxes and penalties remain unpaid and the county moves to sell the tax lien at a sale scheduled in May.

    Mike Kohan, the founder of Kohan Retail, said in a brief call with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the company’s malls are “doing fine all across the country.” Georgia Power turned back on the mall’s lights after Kohan Retail “met the necessary requirements” following several months of delinquent power bills.

    Kohan said refinancing the mall’s loan last year means there “was not enough cash to pay the taxes.” He said the back taxes will be paid soon.

    Kohan did not respond to multiple follow-up calls seeking additional comment on the mall’s unpaid property taxes and troubles the company has encountered elsewhere.

    Greg Null, an Atlanta attorney with Carlton Fields who specializes in commercial real estate debt, said unpaid property taxes — also called a local tax lien — is a sign the mall’s distress likely runs deeper than some unlit light bulbs.

    “It’s a bellwether for the health of the property,” he said. “If there’s a tax lien, there’s a problem.”

    Hard ‘to feel stable’

    A Texas mall owned by Kohan Retail had its water shut off eight times in 2024 because the bill had not been paid, ABC affiliate television station KXXV reported. Another Kohan Retail mall in Kansas had its power turned off five times in seven months, ABC affiliate KAKE reported. An Iowa mall owned by Kohan Retail was closed for over nine months after its power was shut off, KCRG in Cedar Rapids reported.

    Several malls owned by the group have shut down, according to news reports. Others have faced auction due to unpaid taxes, which could also be in Town Center mall’s future.

    For the employees who work at Town Center, Tuesday’s sudden closure and the lack of communication have them concerned about its future — especially after examining Kohan Retail’s track record with other malls it owns across the U.S.

    “I don’t want it to happen again,” Reed said. “It’s hard for us to feel stable within our jobs here because the company is not stable already.”

    Cobb County Tax Commissioner Carla Jackson filed a lien on the property in January after Town Center racked up $998,260 in unpaid taxes, which now surpass $1 million with penalties and interest. Jackson said Kohan Retail was also 10 months late paying its taxes in 2023, the same year the firm acquired the mall for $71 million.

    Jackson said her staff has been trying unsuccessfully to reach the company for months.

    “We would prefer for people to talk to us if they’re struggling — set up a payment arrangement or something,” she said. “But when we hear crickets, and it’s a big commercial property, I mean, we’re gonna move on it.”

    Snowballing debt

    If the bill remains unpaid, the tax lien will be sold at auction May 6.

    Investors bid to purchase the value of the lien, which the property owner will still have to pay back. The investor can charge 20% in interest during the lien’s first year and 10% in subsequent years, which Null said can lead to hefty profits.

    “These sell like hotcakes,” he said. “They snap them right up.”

    In addition, outstanding liens can affect other loans and mortgages. After staving off foreclosure last summer by narrowly paying off the loan it used to acquire the mall, Kohan Realty used Town Center as collateral to take out $49.2 million in new debt last year. Spread across two loans, the debt matures in early 2026.

    Several regional malls nationwide have shuttered amid the rise of online shopping and since the COVID-19 pandemic. Some Atlanta-area malls have been reimagined or redesigned into mixed-use developments, often with apartments, office space, entertainment attractions and other uses.

    Town Center suffered another hit with its Belk store expected to close next month, according to Channel 2 Action News.

    Jim Bieri, a national retail expert based with Stokas Bieri Real Estate in Detroit, said there’s a clear divide between malls that are receiving investment and refreshes from ownership and those that are merely investment tools.

    “They tend not to invest in the mall, and they squeeze cash flow everywhere they can,” Bieri said of some owners.

    Kohan said the company values its tenants and will work to accommodate the tenants impacted by the closure.

    “We appreciate the tenants,” Kohan said. “We’re going to consider them as partners and move forward, and 2025 is going to be a great year for us in terms of acquisitions of new malls and also upkeeping the malls that we already own.”

    But employees like Reed, who depend on the mall for their livelihood, fear the lights may not stay on.

    “There’s so many questions that are unanswered,” she said. “Where is the money going to the point where you can’t pay the bill?”

    CINCINNATI (WKRC) – An FDA recall of smoked salmon from a popular chain of retail stores was recently reclassified as a Class 1 recall, the highest risk level available.

    The Food and Drug Administration issued a recall for Kirkland Signature brand smoked salmon, sold at Costco, for possible Listeria Monocytogenes contamination in October of 2024, but the recall was recently readjusted to Class 1, the highest risk level, which the FDA defines on its website as “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”

    The recall specifically affects 111 cases of Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon in twin 12 ounce packages, UPC 0 96619 25697 6, Lot 8512801270 with the best by date of 11/13/2024.

    The product had not been on shelves for some time, but it is possible that some customers still have it in their freezer for later use.

    Those who purchased the product should throw it away or return it to Costco for a refund.

  • Honda Recalls 290,000 Cars in US Over Engine Issues

    This large Honda recall comes just five days after Ford recalled 270,827 Bronco Sport SUVs and Maverick pickups because of faulty 12-volt batteries, four days after Kia recalled 80,000 cars because of wiring defects in their airbags and seat belt safety system, and a month after Tesla recalled 700,000 vehicles because of cars failing to alert drivers about low pressure, which could lead to crashes.

    The Tesla models affected by this recall were the 2024 Cybertruck, 2017-2025 Model 3, and 2020-2025 Model Y vehicles.

    Honda has a strong sales history, producing many of America’s most popular vehicles. Honda’s CR-V holds the fifth spot in Car and Driver‘s most popular SUVs, cars or trucks in America list for 2024, and the Honda Civic was the 10th most popular car in America last year. Neither of those cars is being recalled by the NHTSA.

    Honda has big plans for its future. It is planning to release a new battery-electric SUV, the 2026 Acura RSX, later this year. It will be the first all-electric Acura not modeled off a General Motors product.
