The lowdown on Juventus v Milan in the Supercoppa Italiana

The 2024/25 Supercoppa Italiana continues with Juventus taking on Milan in Riyadh.

Here is everything you need to know ahead of this mouthwatering encounter.

Where and when is the game?

The second semi-final of the Supercoppa Italiana 2025 takes place on January 3 between Coppa Italia winners Juventus and Serie A runners-up Milan.

The game kicks off at 22:00 local time (20:00 CET) and will be held at the newly-constructed Kingdom Arena, as will the other semi-final and the final.

The 30,000 capacity venue in Riyadh opened in October 2023 and is also the home of Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal and holds two Guinness World Records: the largest covered football stadium in the world and the highest capacity for an indoor covered stadium.

How did the two teams qualify?

In 2023, the Supercoppa Italiana moved away from the traditional format pitting the Scudetto winner against the Coppa Italia winner, pivoting to a four-team format.

That sees the top two in Serie A take on the Coppa Italia finalists, which interestingly is the top four from Serie A last season.

Juventus booked their ticket to Saudi Arabia by winning the Coppa Italia last May, while Milan’s second placed Serie A finish saw them into the Supercoppa semi-final.

One player to watch from each team

The Turkish youngster is enjoying a breakout season and seems to be relishing the responsibility afforded to him by Thiago Motta.

A Golden Boy Web Award win in December shows the regard he is held in and he looks set to be a cornerstone of the Bianconeri front line for years to come.

He also holds the distinction of being the first ever goalscorer in the new-look Champions League group phase.

Once the Serie A MVP in the not-too-distant past, the Portuguese star is going through a difficult season under his compatriot Paulo Fonseca.

No longer a guaranteed starter and finding himself on the fringes, he has shown that when given opportunities he is still capable of torturing defences.

This clash could be the perfect opportunity to regain some trust and confidence.

    Who are the coaches?

    Thiago Motta (Juventus)

The new man in the Old Lady dugout has felt the heat a little more recently after a very impressive start built on outstanding defensive displays.

Motta earned the job in Turin on the back of leading Bologna into the Champions League for the first time in their history in its modern format.

Some disappointing slip-ups throughout November and December have led to criticism but he would go a long way to winning fans back by lifting his first piece of silverware.

Less than a week ago, it seemed under-fire Milan boss Paulo Fonseca would survive the heat long enough to take his team to Saudi Arabia.

But a disappointing draw against his former club Roma on Sunday led to his dismissal (which had been coming following a poor start) and he was swiftly replaced by compatriot Sergio Conceição.

The highly-regarded tactician had been out of work since bringing an end to a successful seven-year stay at Porto during the summer and his first game in charge of the Rossoneri will come in Riyadh against Juventus.

The clubs contested the 2003 Champions League final against each other in the first ever all-Italian affair. A tense affair at Old Trafford produced no goals before Milan went on to win on penalties.

    Predicted line-ups

Juventus (4-2-3-1): De Gregorio; Danilo, Gatti, Kalulu, Cambiaso; Locatelli, Thuram; Conceiçao, Koopmeiners, Yildiz; Vlahović

Milan (4-3-3): Maignan; Royal, Gabbia, Thiaw, Jimenez; Fofana, Reijnders, Pulisic; Chukwueze, Abraham, Leão

    Michele Di Gregorio (Juventus)

“It is a semi-final, so it’s in or out tonight, we must be ready to fight hard,” Di Gregorio told Sport Mediaset.

“Every game is different, these are two teams who already faced off recently. We want to do better and this is the moment to do it.

“Milan are a great team with a new coach, but it doesn’t change much for us, because we are prepared and need to prove we are ready.”

The stadium is sold out today. However, we saw yesterday that 10,000 of the 12,000 weren’t in their seats when the game kicked off. So it won’t look sold out…

Lega Serie A CEO Luigi De Siervo

“There are great champions on the field, the Supercoppa is an opportunity to promote our football around the world in new markets. Saudi Arabia is preparing for the World Cup and in sporting terms can become the new centre of the world. Football is growing here at club level with great stars brought in, but they are also investing in a new generation of champions that they hope can play in the World Cup,” De Siervo told Sport Mediaset.

“We know the first Supercoppa finalist is Inter, the stadium is packed today and completely sold out. We know Saudi Arabia look to Italy as an example of great football and we want to nurture that sensation, as well as help the local sport to grow.”

    2025-01-03 18:08:57

    Christian Pulisic (Milan)

“I feel very good, I am ready for the game today,” Pulisic told Sport Mediaset.

“We have many great players, I always like to score and provide assists, but the important thing is that we win today.

“We only worked with the new coach for two or three days, so it is not easy, but we want to start strong.”

«I miei obiettivi?

Inter trust Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram in the Supercoppa Italiana semi-final, while Atalanta totally revamp with Lazar Samardzic and Nicolò Zaniolo upfront.

It kicks off at the Al-Awwal Park Stadium in Riyadh at 19.00 GMT.

You can follow all the build-up and action as it happens on the Liveblog.

The tournament takes the Final Four format, as today the Serie A holders face the Coppa Italia runners-up, then tomorrow Milan who were second in the Scudetto race will play Cup winners Juventus.

The Final is then on Monday evening, as Inter try to win the Supercoppa for the fourth year in a row.

If the teams are level after 90 minutes, they go straight to a penalty shoot-out, so there will be no extra time.

Inter have limited options in defence, as Francesco Acerbi and Benjamin Pavard did not make the trip, but Matteo Darmian is available again.

Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram lead the attack, with Hakan Calhanoglu and Federico Dimarco in support.

Atalanta are top of the Serie A table, despite seeing their 11-match winning streak ended by a draw with Lazio, but lost 4-0 to Inter back in August.

La Dea have not beaten Inter since a 4-1 result in November 2018, managing just five draws in their last 13 competitive meetings.

Mateo Retegui, Juan Cuadrado and Gianluca Scamacca are all out of action, so there has to be a False 9 in attack.

Surprisingly, Charles De Ketelaere and Ademola Lookman are on the bench, with Marco Brescianini and Samardzic supporting Zaniolo.

Defender Giorgio Scalvini also seems to be moved into midfield.

    Inter vs. Atalanta line-ups

Inter: Sommer; Bisseck, De Vrij, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Thuram, Lautaro Martinez

Inter bench: J Martinez, Calligaris, Zielinski, Arnautovic, Correa, Frattesi, Buchanan, Asllani, Carlos Augusto, Darmian, Palacios, Aidoo, Alexiou, Berenbruch, Taremi

Atalanta: Carnesecchi; Kossounou, Hien, Kolasinac; Zappacosta, De Roon, Scalvini, Ruggeri; Brescianini, Samardzic; Zaniolo

Atalanta bench: Rui Patricio, Rossi, Toloi, Sulemana, Pasalic, Lookman, Ederson, Bellanova, De Ketelaere, Djimsiti, Palestra, Vlahovic

Inter, Milan, Juventus and Atalanta will all compete in the Supercoppa Italiana in Saudi Arabia over the next few days and will all fight for a share of the €23m allocated in the tournament’s prize pot.

Here is how much each team will earn from the Supercoppa Italiana depending on their results.

How much will teams earn from Supercoppa Italiana?

The competition has made €23m available in the prize pot. That does not include money or bonuses from club sponsors.

Each of Inter, Milan, Juventus and Atalanta have already guaranteed themselves €1.6m as an appearance fee for participating in the competition’s semi-finals.

The two losing teams in the semi–finals will walk away with €1.6m, but the two winners of the semis will see that figure increased to €3.6m.

On top of that fee, the losing side in the Supercoppa Italiana final will receive an additional €5m in prize money according to La Gazzetta dello Sport

The winner of the 2025 Suercoppa Italiana will walk away with an €8m cash prize, on top of the fees they earned from the semi-finals.

The Supercoppa Italiana prize money has been revealed, with a total of €23 million to be divided among the four participating teams: Inter, Milan, Juventus, and Atalanta.

The annual match, which pits the winners of the Serie A and Coppa Italia against each other, will see the winning team take home a significant portion of the prize money. Last year, Juventus claimed the title and received €8 million in prize money.

This year, with Inter, Milan, Juventus, and Atalanta all vying for the trophy, the prize money will be divided among the teams based on their performance in the tournament. The winners will receive the largest share, while the runners-up and other participants will also receive a portion of the prize money.

The Supercoppa Italiana is always a highly anticipated match in the Italian football calendar, and the substantial prize money adds an extra incentive for the teams to perform well. Fans can expect an exciting and competitive tournament as the four top teams in Italy battle it out for the title and a share of the lucrative prize money.

    Il programma

    Semifinale 2 gennaio ore 20: Inter-Atalanta;
    semifinale 3 gennaio ore 20 Juventus-Milan.
Finale (orario da stabilire) il 6 gennaio

    Regolamento

    Come ci arrivano

    L’albo d’oro

    Ecco l’albo d’oro della Supercoppa Italiana. 1988 Milan; 1989 Inter; 1990 Napoli; 1991 Sampdoria; 1992 Milan; 1993 Milan; 1994 Milan; 1995 Juventus; 1996 Fiorentina; 1997 Juventus; 1998 Lazio; 1999 Parma; 2000 Lazio; 2001 Roma; 2002 Juventus; 2003 Juventus; 2004 Milan; 2005 Inter; 2006 Inter; 2007 Roma; 2008 Inter; 2009 Lazio; 2010 Inter; 2011 Milan; 2012 Juventus; 2013 Juventus; 2014 Napoli; 2015 Juventus; 2016 Milan; 2017 Lazio; 2018 Juventus; 2019 Lazio; 2020 Juventus; 2021 Inter; 2022 Inter. 2023 Inter.
