  • Game Forty-Seven Preview: Kings @ Blue Jackets

The Los Angeles Kings begin a five-game road trip against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

LA are coming off a two-game homestand where they went 1-1-0, losing 5-1 to the Pittsburgh Penguins and winning 2-1 versus the Florida Panthers.

Columbus just completed a four-game road trip, finishing with a 1-2-1 record and featuring one of the best tilts we’ve seen all season.

This is the second and final meeting of the 2024-25 NHL regular season between these two clubs. LA picked up a 5-2 victory at home on November 9, 2024.

    SPIKE THE CANNON

In twelve career games against the Blue Jackets, Kings Forward Kevin Fiala has thirteen points (4G, 9A) and a +8 rating. He’s registered at least a point in all but two of those matchups – one of which was earlier this season on November 9, 2024.

Since joining the Kings, Fiala has only registered four SOG in four games played against the Blue Jackets.

By comparison, here’s a look at Fiala’s numbers over the years:

With Los Angeles Kings vs. Columbus Blue Jackets

    4GP – 1G – 4 SOG – 25% Shooting Percentage

With Minnesota Wild vs. Columbus Blue Jackets

    4GP – 2G – 18 SOG – 11% Shooting Percentage

With Nashville Predators vs. Columbus Blue Jackets

    4GP – 1G – 10 SOG – 10% Shooting Percentage

Fiala has currently has a 11.5% shooting percentage this season – consistent with his averages playing for the Kings (11.9%).

Fiala’s shooting percentage with the Kings ranks second behind his time with the Wild (12.3%), ahead of the Predators (10.1%).

    MARCH-ING ON

Selected 49th-overall at the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, Blue Jackets Forward Kirill Marchenko has blossomed into a consistent twenty-goal scorer in the NHL, scoring twenty-one goals in 2022-23, and twenty-three goals last season.

He’s already nearing the twenty-goal mark this season, with eighteen in forty-eight games played.

This past summer, Marchenko signed a three-year extension with the Blue Jackets worth $3.85M/year AAV.

For the title of this key… I was going to say something about a marching band. But apparently, Marchenko doesn’t listen to music. So, that’s something.

I guess he marches to the beat of his own drummer. THERE IT IS!

    BLUE-COLLARS

The Blue Jackets have their work cut out for them going against the defensive-minded Kings who rank sixth in the league in PK% (82.1%) and second in GA/G (2.44).

Individually, Captain Anze Kopitar and Phillip Danault have 56.0% and 53.7% faceoff win percentages (respectively) and Tanner Jeannot ranks sixteenth in the league in hits (135).

Puck drop is slated for 4:05 PM PST. You can watch the game on television via the FanDuel Sports Network or listen live with the ESPN LA app.

  • PREVIEW: Blue Jackets host Kings on Star Wars Night

The reality is the task that greeted the Blue Jackets on Thursday night was about as tough as it gets in the NHL.

Carolina has developed a reputation as one of the hardest teams to play against in the NHL because of their speed, constant pressure and dedication to creating the type of chaos that can leave an opposing team’s head spinning.

Facing the Hurricanes in the best of times is a tall order, but doing so on the second half of a back-to-back makes the ask even harder.

Columbus handled the storm, so to speak, by taking a 2-0 lead through one period in Raleigh, but eventually the surge overwhelmed the Blue Jackets. Carolina scored five times in the second period and pulled away to a 7-4 win that was not very emblematic of the way the Blue Jackets have played of late.

They had given up just 10 goals in the previous seven games, but Carolina’s pressure in a tough situation at the end of a road trip that featured four games in six days was too much.

“They don’t allow you to make a lot of plays in the offensive zone and even the neutral zone,” Jack Johnson said afterward. “We managed it well in the first and third, but you can’t have a second period like that and expect good things against a good team.”

But as a wise man (Jedi?) once said, “Do or do not. There is no try.” The result at the end of the night was the Blue Jackets left North Carolina with zero points, and there are certain ares of their game they can clean up. If there was any particular frustration with the effort, it was that the Blue Jackets lost their structure a bit at times and allowed Carolina to create in transition, a no-no against a team as fast and talented as the Hurricanes.

If there was a saving grace, though, it was that the Blue Jackets didn’t go down without a fight, scoring two goals of their own to turn a 5-2 deficit into a 5-4 game though two periods. Columbus couldn’t get over the hump in the third period, but the team at least showed the fighting spirit that has been common throughout the season.

“We were reeling a little bit, but the group hung in there, and obviously we kept plugging away,” head coach Dean Evason said. “We just couldn’t find a way at the end.”

The good news is the team got a little rest Friday with an off day, and the Blue Jackets return to Nationwide Arena tonight to face the Kings. The comforts of home have been evident throughout this season but particularly as the campaign has gone on, as Columbus has earned points in 18 of the last 21 games (15-3-3) in their own barn.

Know The Dark Side: Los Angeles Kings

Head coach: Jim Hiller (Second season)

    Team stats: Goals per game: 2.91 (18th) | Scoring defense: 2.44 (2nd) | PP: 16.2 percent (28th) | PK: 82.1 percent (8th)

The narrative: Stanley Cup champions in 2012 and ’14, Los Angeles hasn’t won a playoff series since the latter victory, including three straight first-round exits. A rebuild after the last title has brought the team a bevy of young talent, and the hope is mixing it with some solid veterans can vault the team back into the stratosphere of the NHL’s elite. Los Angeles has finished third in the Pacific Division each of the past three seasons and occupies that same spot coming into tonight’s game.

Team leaders: Adrian Kempe might be the most underrated player in the league, averaging just shy of 35 goals each of the past three seasons and leading the Kings this year with 24 tallies among 44 points. The 28-year-old Swedish wing has scored in eight of the last 10 games. Now in his 19th season, the seemingly ageless Anze Kopitar is still a great player at age 37, placing second on the team with a 12-31-43 line. Alex Laferriere (13-13-26) and Kevin Fiala (15-11-26) follow, while 21-year-old Brandt Clarke leads the defensemen with 24 points.

Playing behind one of the best defensive teams in the league, 2022 Cup winner Darcy Kuemper has had a career renaissance, posting a 14-4-5 record, 2.06 GAA and a .922 save percentage. He’s split time with David Rittich (20 starts, 11-10-0, 2.65 GAA, .884 save percentage).

What’s new: The return of likely Hall of Fame defenseman Drew Doughty is imminent, as the 16-year veteran has not played this season with an ankle injury. Laferriere also has been on the shelf with an upper-body injury, not a good development for a team that has consistently struggled to score goals, including just 11 in the last six games as Los Angeles has posted a 2-4-0 record. On the other side of things, the defense has been strong all season, with the Kings leading the NHL in expected goals against per 60 minutes at 5-on-5 according to MoneyPuck.com.

Trending: Los Angeles won a 5-2 final between the teams Nov. 9, Columbus’ fourth straight loss in the series, but the Blue Jackets have points in the last five matchups (3-0-2) in Nationwide Arena.

Former CBJ: Defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov is in his third season with the Kings and has a 2-14-16 line and plus-11 rating thus far while playing almost 24 minutes a night with Doughty out. His last goal came 29 games ago vs. Columbus.

Join us for an out-of-this-galaxy experience as the Columbus Blue Jackets host the Los Angeles Kings on Star Wars Night!

On Saturday, December 11th, Nationwide Arena will be transformed into a galaxy far, far away as fans are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite Star Wars characters. From Darth Vader to Princess Leia, the force will be strong in Columbus.

In addition to the intergalactic fun, there will be special Star Wars-themed activities, giveaways, and entertainment throughout the game. Fans can also expect to see appearances from some familiar Star Wars characters roaming the concourse.

But the excitement doesn’t end there – the Blue Jackets will be looking to take down the Kings in an epic battle on the ice. With both teams vying for a playoff spot, this game is sure to be intense and action-packed.

Don’t miss out on this one-of-a-kind event that combines the thrill of hockey with the magic of Star Wars. May the force be with the Blue Jackets as they take on the Kings on Star Wars Night!

The Columbus Blue Jackets are back in Toronto tonight to take on the Maple Leafs in a crucial game for their playoff hopes. Despite facing a tough opponent, the Blue Jackets are still very much in the playoff race and will be looking to secure a much-needed win.

With just a handful of games left in the regular season, every point is crucial for Columbus as they try to secure a spot in the postseason. The team has been playing some of their best hockey of the season as of late, and will be looking to continue that momentum tonight against the Maple Leafs.

The Blue Jackets will need a strong performance from their top players, including captain Nick Foligno and leading goal scorer Oliver Bjorkstrand, if they hope to come out on top in this important matchup. With their playoff hopes hanging in the balance, the Blue Jackets know that they need to leave it all on the ice tonight.

So grab your jersey and get ready to cheer on the Blue Jackets as they battle it out in Toronto tonight. Let’s go Jackets! #CBJ #PlayoffPush

  • Maple Leafs vs Blue Jackets Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

Auston Matthews has had a ton of success against Columbus in his career, and our NHL picks expect that to continue tonight.

Mike DiStefano - Betting Analyst at Covers.com

Photo By – Imagn Images. Pictured: Maple Leafs superstar Auston Matthews celebrates with his teammates after scoring a goal.

We’ve got eight games on the NHL betting slate today, including an Eastern Conference clash between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena.

Auston Matthews has made a living out of torching the Blue Jackets throughout his career with 22 points in 16 games, including a handful of multi-point efforts along the way, thus making his point total the focus of my Maple Leafs vs. Blue Jackets predictions.

Find out why in my NHL picks for this January 22 Leafs vs. Blue Jackets matchup.

Maple Leafs vs Blue Jackets prediction

    My Leafs pick
Auston Matthews Over 1.5 points (+130 at Sports Interaction)

    My Leafs analysis
The Toronto Maple Leafs will look to win their fourth in a row when they welcome the Columbus Blue Jackets to town.

The Jackets had been rolling recently, going on a six-game winning streak before sputtering out in their last couple of games here, losing 1-0 and 3-1, both losses coming on the road. Columbus has been Jekyll and Hyde this year, depending on where they’re played.

The Jackets have been excellent inside Nationwide Arena, sporting a 16-5-3 record. However, things drop off massively when they hit the highway. The team has the worst record in the conference with a lowly .348 points percentage and a -28 goal differential, allowing the third-most goals per game in the NHL (3.62).

The Leafs are a strong home team and should be able to take full advantage of a Columbus group that doesn’t travel well. Toronto has also averaged 4.00 goals against CBJ over the last five meetings.

One player who seems to always litter the scoresheet in these matchups is none other than the three-time Rocket winner Auston Matthews. The Leafs sniper has 11 goals and 20 points in the last 10 meetings against Columbus, seven of those games being multi-point efforts.

This is why his Over 1.5 points is super appealing to me, especially with the Leafs captain finally looking healthy again amid his strongest stretch of games this year. He’s scored in four straight games and has gone Over the 1.5-point total in two of those four. Given how hot he is and his past success against the Blue Jackets, I think he’s bound to do it again.

Maple Leafs vs Blue Jackets same-game parlay (SGP)

    Auston Matthews anytime goalscorer

    Auston Matthews 3+ shots

    Zach Werenski 3+ shots

We’ll mirror the best bet with a goal from Auston Matthews. The Leafs captain has 13 goals in 16 career games against Columbus and has cashed in this prop in nine of the last 10 meetings between the two clubs. He also finally looks healthy and confident again, which has allowed him to score in four straight outings. He should be able to make it five in a row in this spot.

Next up, we’ll stick with the Matthews prop market and take him to register 3+ shots on goal. This is another prop he’s cashed in nine of the last 10 meetings against the Blue Jackets. He’s also averaging 3.87 shots per game and has gone Over the total in two of his last three outings.

Let’s continue to pound the shot prop market and take Blue Jackets star defenseman Zach Werenski to go Over 2.5 shots tonight. He leads Columbus with 180 shots on goal, averaging 3.82 per game, and Toronto gives up the ninth-most shots on goal per contest (29.2).

  • PREVIEW: Blue Jackets look to get back in the win column in Toronto

All good things come to an end, and so it was for the Blue Jackets on Monday night.

One game after their six-game winning streak came to a close with a shootout loss against the Rangers, the Blue Jackets saw their seven-game point streak end on Long Island with a 3-1 loss to the Islanders.

After Columbus took a first-period lead on a power-play goal by Kent Johnson, the game changed in the first six minutes of the second stanza thanks to even-strength, shorthanded and power-play goals for New York. From there, a heavy Islanders team kept the Blue Jackets attack at bay, and head coach Dean Evason said his team just didn’t have its usual energy as it tried to come back.

“We didn’t have any pop in tonight’s hockey game,” Evason said. “We were slow in all areas. We thought slow, we skated slow, we passed slow. We haven’t done that lately. We’ve played the game fast – we’ve thought it fast, we got pucks going so that we could move our feet. Tonight, it looked like we were stuck in a bit of mud, and consequently we got the result we did not want.”

As much as coaches don’t want them to, those games happen occasionally in the NHL, and the key once they do is to bounce back as quickly as possible. That opportunity comes tonight against a Toronto team that has won eight of its last 11, so things won’t come easily.

The Blue Jackets are still 10-3-2 in their last 15, so it’s fair to say this is a matchup of two of the hotter teams in the NHL, placing fourth (Columbus) and tied for seventh (Toronto) in the NHL in points since Dec. 19.

“You know, we’ve been on a good stretch here so far getting some results, and it’s just one bad game,” Olivier said. “You can’t dwell on it too much. Obviously we’ll analyze it and see what went wrong on our part, but we have to just keep moving forward here. We have a job to do in Toronto.”

Offense hasn’t been much of a problem for the Blue Jackets throughout this season, but Columbus has scored just one goal so far in the first two games of its road trip. It’s a short blip of the season, but the Blue Jackets also know it will be harder to find offensive chances as the game tightens and teams battle for a playoff spot.

The onus is on them to take advantage of their looks and keep the red lights flashing behind opposing goalies.

“We have been getting some opportunities,” Adam Fantilli said. “We just have to capitalize on them. It’s the NHL. You can’t get those opportunities and not get (goals) and just say, ‘Oh, next time.’ Eventually you have to bear down on them. I’m staring right in the mirror at myself; I had a few tonight that I should have beared down on, and they just didn’t go in.”

Know The Foe: Toronto Maple Leafs

Head coach: Craig Berube (First season)

    Team stats: Goals per game: 3.17 (11th) | Scoring defense: 2.85 (12th) | PP: 22.2 percent (13th) | PK: 81.0 percent (12th)

The narrative: One season after Toronto won a postseason series for the first time in two decades, heartbreak returned to the city last year as the Leafs lost in overtime of Game 7 of the first round vs. Longtime nemesis Boston. The most talked about team in hockey made some changes – in particular, the hiring of Stanley Cup-winning coach Berube – but it’s still a squad built around the high-powered forward quartet of Auston Matthews, William Nylander, Mitchell Marner and John Tavares.

Team leaders: Those are the team’s top four scorers on the season, though Tavares (20-22-42) is on injured reserve with a lower body injury. Marner is second in the NHL in assists and fourth in points this season with a 15-52-67 line and is tied for the league lead in scoring with 29 points in 19 games since Dec. 13. Nylander’s 28 goals among 49 points are second in the NHL, while Matthews got off to a slow start after last year’s 69-goal campaign and has battled injuries but still has a 19-18-37 line in 33 games including nine goals in his last 10 games. Matthew Knies adds 18 tallies on the year.

In net, Joseph Woll has rebounded from an early-season injury and leads the team with 24 starts, going 17-8-0 with a 2.69 GAA and .907 save percentage. Anthony Stolarz held down the fort early but is out with a knee injury, leaving Dennis Hildeby (3-2-0, 3.18, .884) as the backup.

What’s new: The Maple Leafs have been a fan of streaks recently, winning five straight from Dec. 31-Jan. 7, dropping three in a row, and then winning the last three after Monday night’s 5-3 win over Tampa Bay. The offense scored just four goals in the three losses, then has put the puck in the net 16 times over the last three victories. Marner has led the charge with seven points during the winning streak, while Nylander and Matthews each have five.

Trending: Columbus won two of the three matchups a season ago as well as the first meeting this season between the teams, a 6-2 final Oct. 22 in Nationwide Arena.

Former CBJ: The well-traveled Max Domi (3-14-17 in 40 games) is on his seventh NHL team but seems to have found a home in Toronto, where his dad is a Leafs legend, as he signed four-year deal with the squad in the offseason. Alex Nylander has played five games with his brother without a point and has been returned to the AHL.

After a tough loss to the Montreal Canadiens, the Columbus Blue Jackets are looking to bounce back and get back in the win column as they take on the Toronto Maple Leafs tonight.

The Blue Jackets have had a strong start to the season, but they are coming off a 3-1 loss to the Canadiens and will be looking to regroup and come out strong against the Maple Leafs. Toronto, on the other hand, is coming off a win against the Ottawa Senators and will be looking to keep their momentum going.

Both teams have talented rosters and this game promises to be an exciting matchup. The Blue Jackets will need to tighten up defensively and capitalize on their scoring chances if they want to come out on top against the high-powered Maple Leafs.

Be sure to tune in tonight to see if the Blue Jackets can get back on track and secure a big win in Toronto. Let’s go Jackets! #CBJ #NHL #BlueJackets #TorontoMapleLeafs
