  • Shorthanded Jackets fall short in comeback bid at FSU 91-78

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.— Georgia Tech traveled down to Florida State aiming to get off the mat after several tough ACC losses but came up short in a comeback bid losing 91-78 to the Noles. The Jackets fell to 8-11 overall and 2-6 in ACC play while FSU improved to 13-5 overall and 4-3 in league play with the win.

Tech entered the game without starters Kowacie Reeves and Luke O’Brien who have both been out for weeks with foot injuries and backup guard turned starter Jaeden Mustaf was also out with an ankle injury thinning the Jackets to a six-man rotation against a deep Florida State team.

“I’m proud of the team and proud of my guys. I thought they played hard and gave themselves a chance to win the game. We had more assists than turnovers against a team that prides themselves on forcing turnovers. I know all the obstacles we are facing, but I’m not into all of that. But what I’m proud of is those guys went out there and played hard and we took hits and it was a really fun game to watch,” Stoudamire said. “Sometimes you see your team growing in those moments and guys are giving all they have and that is a testament to them. I’m happy they are fighting and we are going to get some payback for it.”

Senior guard Lance Terry battled through a hand injury to lead all scorers with 23 points on 9-17 shooting. Terry was 7-9 in the second half with 17 of his 23 points.

Terry after a slow start said adrenaline kicked in and carried him in the second half despite playing through pain.

“I just kept playing hard and that adrenaline kicked in toward the end and I’m continuing to try to play hard despite how I was feeling,” Terry said.

Guard Javian McCollum and forward Duncan Powell each added 20 points as well with Powell providing his points off the bench in 33 minutes. McCollum did all of his damage in the second half with 18 of his 20 points coming on 4-8 shooting from three.

Big man Baye Ndongo was a non-factor offensively but provided 12 rebounds for the Jackets.

Tech only had 12 turnovers in the game and had 13 assists on 26 made field goals marking the first game in several that the Jackets finished on the positive side of the assist-to-turnover ratio.

Taylor Bol Bowen led FSU with 20 points in 28 minutes of action on 7-9 shooting with three made threes on five attempts. FSU shot 52.2 percent for the game and 9-27 from three.

Malik Ewin and Jamir Watkins each had 17 points for the Noles with Ewin posting a double-double

Second-chance points were the big difference maker. Florida State had 20 second-chance points on 12 offensive boards, while Tech had just 12 second-chance points on 10 offensive boards.

The Jackets started very slowly, shooting just 25.9 percent in the first half and 2-14 from three with 7 turnovers. Florida State was more consistent, shooting 44.1 percent and 5-17 from three to put up a 13-point first-half lead over the Jackets.

“I thought we came out in the first half with a lot of energy and created some easy baskets and I thought we were playing elite defense and our offense was a little spotty. In the second half they scored 50-something points and after not being able to score much in the second half. That says a lot about the growth we need to be making and be effective for the whole 40 minutes,” FSU coach Leonard Hamilton said.

Hamilton was impressed with the Jackets’ performance given how shorthanded Tech is at the moment.

“It says a lot about the relationship they have with each other and the coach to keep them motivated. We went through a stretch with unbelievable injuries and it is hard to play in the ACC with six players. You have to play hard and defend and stay out of foul trouble. You aren’t quite as aggressive and now you are playing cautious and they kept coming back, it says a lot about them. They have four guys who shoot 40% from three when they get into the lane and spray the ball to guys. When we were better defensively we held them in check, then sometimes you fail and they hit some uncontested threes,” Hamilton said.

Tech returns home to play the other Tech, Virginia Tech on Wednesday night in McCamish Pavilion before a week break.

Georgia Tech dug an early hole trailing 15-4 at the first media timeout after a 1-8 start shooting. The Jackets maintained a solid deficit trailing 26-10 at the U-8 media timeout. Tech trailed by 13 at the break 37-24

Tech opened the second half with a 10-0 run to cut the FSU lead to three, 37-34 in the first two minutes of the half. The Noles pushed back out by eight at the first media timeout of the second half with 15:40 left in the game, 42-34. Ibrahim Souare picked up his fourth foul with 13:43 left in the game. Ndongo picked up his fourth foul with 9:24 left in the game and the Jackets down 58-51. Stoudamire used a timeout with 7:54 left after Tech gave up a 6-0 run after cutting FSU’s lead to six down 65-55. Tech cut the lead to six 69-63 but Ndongo fouled out on the other end of the court fouling Taylor Bol Bowen on a desperation three. Tech ten missed four straight free throws as the Noles pushed the lead back to 11, 77-66 with four minutes to play. The Noles closed the game with a 16-3 run

The Ohio State men’s basketball team came up short in their comeback bid against Florida State, falling 91-78 in a shorthanded effort.

Despite missing key players due to injuries and illness, the Buckeyes battled hard against the Seminoles but ultimately couldn’t overcome the deficit.

The loss drops Ohio State to 7-3 on the season, but the team showed resilience and fight in the face of adversity.

Head coach Chris Holtmann praised his team’s effort and determination, but acknowledged that they have to do a better job of closing out games.

The Buckeyes will look to regroup and bounce back in their next game, as they continue to navigate through a challenging stretch of their schedule.

  • Florida State hopes to build on impressive win today vs. Jackets

Lost at least a bit in the shadow of the near-brawl after Wednesday’s win over Pitt was just how well the Florida State men’s basketball team played for most of that night.

    Especially on defense.

Coming off a less-than-stellar showing in a 20-point loss at Clemson last Saturday, the Seminoles played with as much fight and energy as they have all year on the defensive end. The result was an impressive 82-70 win over the Panthers that improved FSU’s record to 12-5 overall and 3-3 in the ACC.

The ‘Noles will look to get over .500 in conference play on Saturday with a home game against Georgia Tech (8-10, 2-5 in the ACC). Tipoff is scheduled for noon, and the game will air on ESPNU.

“I thought we showed a little bit of evidence of progress more mentally and emotionally than physically,” Florida State head coach Leonard Hamilton said after Wednesday victory. “We didn’t get quicker or faster or stronger, but I thought we had a mind shift.

“Obviously, we were very disappointed in our performance at Clemson, and I thought our guys responded in a lot of ways with their effort, focus, their ability to communicate and hold each other accountable. And that’s the thing I was most impressed with.”

Despite a two-game losing streak at the time, Pitt came down to Florida State as one of the top offensive teams in the conference. The Panthers rank third in the ACC in scoring offense and second in field-goal percentage. They were also averaging just 10 turnovers per game.

On Wednesday night, against (for the most part) a suffocating Seminoles defense, the Panthers committed 17 turnovers — eight by star guard Jaland Lowe alone. Pitt also shot just 37.5 percent from the floor. And other than forward Jorge Diaz Graham going 4-of-5 from 3-point range (he had made just seven 3-pointers total since Nov. 18), the Panthers were just 25 percent from beyond the arc.

“We had a lot of guys that gave us tremendous effort,” Hamilton said. “Overall, I think we showed some growth and maturity just in the way we responded.”

Now, Florida State has turned its attention to a Georgia Tech squad that is really struggling under second-year head coach Damon Stoudamire. The Yellow Jackets have lost three straight conference games since recording a 21-point win over Boston College to start the year.

The Jackets are also 0-5 in true road games this season, but one of those losses was just a 68-65 defeat at North Carolina back in early December.

The Yellow Jackets are led in scoring by guard Lance Terry, who is averaging 15.4 points per game. Fellow guard Nathan George is averaging 10.4 points per game and is one of the leaders in the conference in assists at 6.4 per contest.

Georgia Tech is coming off a 70-59 home loss to Clemson earlier this week.

The Florida State Seminoles came out with an impressive win today against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, and they are looking to build on that momentum as they head into their next game.

The Seminoles showed great teamwork and determination on the court, with standout performances from key players leading the way to victory. Their defense was solid, and their offense was firing on all cylinders, making it difficult for the Yellow Jackets to keep up.

Now, as they prepare for their next matchup, the Seminoles are focused on continuing to play at a high level and carry that winning energy forward. With their sights set on even more success, they are ready to face whatever challenges come their way.

Fans are excited to see what the Seminoles can accomplish this season, and with their recent win under their belt, the team is feeling confident and motivated. Florida State hopes to keep the momentum going and come out on top in their next game, building on their impressive performance against the Yellow Jackets. • Blue Jackets, Red Wings players pranked with Ohio State jerseys

Even long after an athlete leaves campus, college rivalries have a habit of never truly dying. The vitriol between schools remains years and even decades later. When it comes to Ohio State and Michigan, that’s especially true.

If they didn’t already know, a few NHL players are finding that out.

In advance of the Blue Jackets’ game against the Detroit Red Wings at Ohio Stadium on March 1, several former Michigan standouts on both teams — Adam Fantilli and Kent Johnson of the Blue Jackets and Dylan Larkin of the Red Wings — were given Ohio State jerseys as a prank by apparel company Fanatics weeks before they prepare to play in the home football venue of their former school’s archrival.

The players were handed a set of jerseys to look at and sign, with a Buckeyes hockey sweater mixed somewhere in the collection.

The Columbus Blue Jackets and Detroit Red Wings players got a surprise when they arrived at the rink for practice today – they were greeted with Ohio State jerseys hanging in their lockers!

The prank was orchestrated by some mischievous teammates looking to have a little fun before their upcoming game against each other. The players couldn’t help but laugh as they tried on the scarlet and gray jerseys, some even posing for pictures and joking about their new look.

Despite the good-natured ribbing, both teams took it in stride and had a good laugh together. It just goes to show that even in the heat of competition, there’s always room for some lighthearted fun.

As they gear up for their game, it’s safe to say that the Blue Jackets and Red Wings will be keeping a close eye on their lockers from now on. Who knows what other surprises might be in store for them next time!

The Red Wings ended the tumultuous calendar year by giving their new coach something to be excited about heading into 2024. After getting bench boss Tod McLellan his first win with the team last weekend, Detroit doubled down with a gutsy effort against the Pittsburgh Penguins on New Year’s Eve, using a couple of late goals to snag a 4-2 victory.

Now, the Wings head into Ohio trying to win three games in a row for the first time this season. With just a few months left in the regular season, Detroit needs to start stringing victories together if they want any chance of getting back into the playoff race. The Red Wings are seventh in the Atlantic Division, six points back of the last Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Blue Jackets, despite all of the adversity this team has faced, are still in postseason contention. Like Detroit, they ended 2024 with a solid stretch of games, winning three of their last four. With players like Sean Monahan, Kirill Marchenko and Zach Werenski leading the charge, Columbus sits fifth in the Metropolitan Division, two points out of a Wild Card spot.

This will be the first of three meetings this season between the former division rivals. Last year, the Wings won all three games against the Jackets.

PREVIEW: Blue Jackets begin 2025 by hosting the Red Wings

When it comes to measuring stick games, the Blue Jackets have fared well this season.

Columbus has 16 victories this year, and 10 of them have been against teams that made it to the Stanley Cup Playoffs a season ago. The latest came New Year’s Eve, as the Blue Jackets won a 4-3 shootout final over a team that’s made the postseason six straight years and won three of the last four Metropolitan Division titles.

Perhaps more important was the way the Blue Jackets did it. Carolina led 3-2 going into the third period, but the Blue Jackets played their best hockey in the final frame, equalized the score and earned just their second victory when trailing after two periods this season.

“I hope it’s a wonderful sign, obviously, moving forward,” head coach Dean Evason said. “We’ve handled adversity up to this point, and now you’re going to have to handle a lot more. But to do it against that team, such a good hockey club – Carolina is so good, put so much heat on us. We didn’t handle it in (some) areas, but at the end of the day we got the job done. We’re resilient. We stayed the course, we don’t panic on our bench, and that’s exciting for us.”

The victory moved Columbus to within two points of the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference as the calendar turns to 2025, and there’s a lot of reasons to like the way the team is playing of late. The Blue Jackets have points in five of the last six games (4-1-1), as the team’s best players like top-line forwards Dmitri Voronkov, Sean Monahan and Kirill Marchenko and top defenseman Zach Werenski have been among the league’s top scorers in that span.

The next step is finding some consistency and perhaps some scoring balance in the lineup, but the most important part might be learning how to win and believing you can go toe-to-toe against the best. The Blue Jackets have made major strides in those categories this season, and they hope they can carry the momentum from the Carolina win into the new year.

“When you win games like this – you come back, you do it on home ice – those are fun, and those are the ones you have to try to build off of,” Monahan said.

Next up is taking on a Detroit team that the Blue Jackets will face March 1 in the Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series game in Ohio Stadium. Columbus has been excellent at home, posting a 12-4-3 record and leading the league with 76 goals scored at home (4.00 average).

Know The Foe: Detroit Red Wings

Head coach: Todd McLellan (First season)

    Team stats: Goals per game: 2.62 (28th) | Scoring defense: 3.24 (24th) | PP: 24.1 percent (9th) | PK: 69.6 percent (31st)

The narrative: After a historic 25-season streak of making the postseason, the Red Wings have failed to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs eight straight seasons. There were high hopes a young core mixed with veterans would keep that run from reaching nine years, but Detroit has scuffled through most of the season culminating in the firing of head coach Derek Lalonde on Dec. 26. New head man McLellan has skipped the team to two wins in his first three games while trying to bring the fun back to the Motor City.

Team leaders: The Red Wings have a keeper in Lucas Raymond, as the 22-year-old Swede who was taken fourth overall in the 2020 draft scored 31 goals last season and leads the squad with 15 goals and 38 points this year. Captain Dylan Larkin is next with a 13-16-29 line, while dangerous goal scorer Alex DeBrincat ties Raymond with 15 goals among his 28 points. Mortiz Seider leads the defense with 20 points on four goals and 16 assists, but he’s the only other Red Wing with at least 20 points as secondary scoring has been hard to come by.

Cam Talbot has started a team-high 18 games in net and is 6-9-2 with a 2.98 GAA and .906 save percentage. Alex Lyon (7-5-0, 2.83, .899) is the primary backup, while veteran Ville Husso has struggled and spent time in the minors this season.

What’s new: McLellan’s tenure started with a loss vs. Toronto, but the Red Wings have won consecutive home games by a 4-2 score over Washington and Pittsburgh. We’ll see the long-term impact of the coaching change, but the Red Wings have a hole to dig out of in the standings as they sit six points out of the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Trending: Detroit swept the season series a year ago, as Columbus went 0-2-1 and gained its only point in an overtime loss March 19 at Nationwide Arena. The Blue Jackets went 17-5-1 against their northern neighbors from 2017-22 but are 1-4-1 the past two years.

Former CBJ: Tyler Motte has played 22 games for the Red Wings this year, and the wing has two goals on the campaign.

The Columbus Blue Jackets are set to kick off the new year by hosting the Detroit Red Wings at Nationwide Arena. The two teams will face off on January 2nd, marking the beginning of the 2025 season for both clubs.

The Blue Jackets will be looking to start the year on a high note as they aim to build upon their success from the previous season. With a roster filled with talented players, including stars like Alex Ovechkin and Pierre-Luc Dubois, Columbus will be a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming season.

On the other hand, the Red Wings will be looking to turn things around after a disappointing season last year. Detroit has made some key offseason acquisitions and will be looking to make a statement in their first game of the year against their division rivals.

This matchup between the Blue Jackets and Red Wings is sure to be an exciting one, as both teams look to set the tone for the rest of the season. Be sure to tune in and catch all the action as these two teams battle it out on the ice.
