Jacksonville Jaguars Hire Anthony Campanile As Defensive Coordinator
JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville Jaguars have hired Anthony Campanile as defensive coordinator, the team announced today.
“Anthony Campanile represents exactly what we want to be as a defensive unit and football team,” said Head Coach Liam Coen. “He brings an aggressive defensive mindset and a system that is adaptable to our players and allows them to play fast and physical.”
Campanile will enter his sixth season in the NFL in 2025, first as a defensive coordinator. In 2024, Campanile served as the linebackers coach/running game coordinator for the Green Bay Packers. The Packers defense allowed the seventh fewest rush yards per game (99.4) under Campanile’s guidance. He also helped Green Bay’s defense finish fourth in total points allowed (318) and fifth in total defense (314.5). Rookie LB Edgerrin Cooper was named NFC Defensive Rookie of the Month for December/January to close out his 2024 campaign.
Prior to joining the Packers, Campanile spent four seasons as linebackers coach for the Dolphins, helping Miami rank fourth in the NFL over that span in sacks (185.0), sixth in rushing defense (106.4 ypg), eighth in takeaways (96), eighth in third-down defense (38.6 pct.) and tied fifth in forced fumbles (56). In 2023, the Dolphins set a franchise-record with 56.0 sacks, LB Bradley Chubb posted a team-high 11.0 sacks and six forced fumbles.
Campanile’s college coaching career included three years at Boston College (2016-18), where he helped six of his defensive backs earn All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors and saw four of his defensive backs go on to be selected in the NFL Draft (S John Johnson III, CB Kamrin Moore, CB Isaac Yiadom, S Will Harris).
Campanile, a native of New Jersey, began his coaching career as a student assistant at Rutgers in 2005 after playing safety and linebacker for the Scarlet Knights from 2002-04. He then coached for six seasons (2006-11) at the high school level, including five years at Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.), where he helped guide the Ironmen to state titles in both 2010 and 2011 and a No. 1 national ranking in 2011. He returned to Rutgers in 2012 as a defensive assistant and switched to the offensive side of the ball, coaching tight ends (2013-2014) and wide receivers (2015).
The Jacksonville Jaguars have officially announced the hiring of Anthony Campanile as their new Defensive Coordinator. Campanile brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the role, having previously served as the linebackers coach at the University of Michigan and Boston College.Campanile is known for his aggressive and innovative defensive schemes, and his ability to develop young talent. His track record of success at the college level has made him a highly sought-after coaching prospect in the NFL, and the Jaguars are thrilled to have him on board.
In a statement, Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer expressed his excitement about Campanile joining the coaching staff, stating that he believes Campanile will be instrumental in helping the team take their defense to the next level.
Jaguars fans can look forward to seeing a more aggressive and dominant defense under Campanile’s leadership, as he works to mold the unit into one of the top defenses in the league. With his proven track record of success, the Jaguars are hopeful that Campanile will help lead the team to success in the upcoming season.

Jacksonville to see temperatures in the 80s after deep freeze
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Bundle up this weekend! While the chill lingers, a dramatic warmup is on the horizon.
This January brought over a dozen official freezes, but the cold’s grip will soon loosen. Though frosty mornings persist this weekend, they could be the season’s last gasp. Last February not one freeze occurred marking an early end to Winter and we should see a repeat this year.
Our Winter will start to fade fast
A pattern reversal arrives next week, replacing arctic air with milder breezes and pushing temperatures into the 70s. February brings even more warmth, with the potential for 80-degree days.
The 80s are several days out but you can at least count on milder 70s next week. The jet stream’s new, less wavy path blocks frigid air from reaching as far south, providing a much-needed break from the chill. This shift follows a weather pattern called the Negative North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and Arctic Oscillation (AO), which brought colder conditions earlier in January.
Freezing temps Saturday morning across Georgia and into north inland Florida. As we move into the second half of January, weather models predict a shift to the Positive Phase of the NAO and AO.
East coast warms up with above average temperatures with a cool down on the west coast early in February. So, keep those winter coats handy for a few more days, Jacksonville, but get ready to trade the parkas for the shorts. Spring weather is on its way!

Whether you’re planning a day at the beach, a picnic in the park, or simply enjoying a leisurely stroll around town, be sure to take advantage of this brief reprieve from the winter chill. Schools in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia, Jacksonville area, closed
As Southeast Georgia and Northeast Florida recover from the winter storm, some schools will remain closed Thursday. This list will be updated as news comes in.
GEORGIA, — This story will be updated as news comes in.
Several counties across the First Coast, were under a Winter Storm Warning Tuesday night into Wednesday as wintry precipitation, and in some areas, snow, descended.
Many school districts that were closed Wednesday will now reopen Thursday. However, due to power outages and icy conditions, some school districts are choosing to remain closed Thursday.
So far, all local Florida counties will return to school Thursday. However, that is subject to change, and we will update if closures are announced.
Here’s which school districts will not reopen:
Nassau County
Here’s what the school district said about Thursday:
“Based on the 5:00 PM update from the National Weather Service, it has been determined that Nassau County residents should avoid driving until 10:00 AM tomorrow, Thursday, January 23. As a result, Nassau County Schools will remain closed tomorrow.
We understand that the timing of this decision may be frustrating, but the unprecedented nature of this weather and the rapidly changing impact on our roads necessitated a late update. We sincerely appreciate our community’s understanding and ongoing commitment to the safety of our students and staff.”
Glynn County
Due to icy roads and widespread power outages, Glynn County Schools will remain closed on Thursday, Jan. 23. This closure includes all after-school and athletic activities. Weather permitting and a thorough assessment of our school buildings, school is expected to resume on Friday, Jan. 24.
The district will communicate any updates through ParentSquare, the district website, Facebook page, and media partners.
Ware County
Due to the ongoing effects from the winter weather event, all Ware County schools and the Central Office will remain closed on Thursday, January 23, 2025.
The Ware County Emergency Management Agency has requested that everyone stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary.
A decision regarding school operations for Friday, January 24, 2025, will be made on Thursday after further assessment of conditions.
Pierce County
Pierce County Schools will remain closed Thursday, January 23 due to hazardous road conditions. All after school activities will be canceled.
“We will evaluate road conditions and weather tomorrow to make a decision about Friday. It is a great day to stay home, stay warm, and make a snowman!” said School Superintendent Dara Bennett.
Camden County
Due to the widespread impacts of Winter Storm Enzo, including icy roads, power outages, and expected freezing temperatures, Camden County Schools will remain closed on Thursday, January 23, 2025. This includes all after-school activities and events.
Charlton County
Due to widespread power outages and the possibility of hazardous road conditions, Charlton County Schools will be closed Thursday. Officials plan on reopening school on Friday.
Due to inclement weather conditions, schools in the Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia, Jacksonville area will be closed today. Please stay safe and warm during this time. Stay tuned for updates on when schools will reopen. Thank you for your understanding.

The 2025 NFL head coaching carousel is in full swing with the Chicago Bears snapping up Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, the consensus top coach available for this cycle. The Jacksonville Jaguars missed out on hiring Johnson, who reportedly wanted the Jaguars head coaching position and wanted to work with young quarterback Trevor Lawrence. However, the one thing Johnson did not want to do (according to multiple reports) was work with Trent Baalke.
In the Jaguars’ offseason press conference earlier this month, Baalke and owner Shad Khan met with the media and were both adamant that not cleaning house — despite Khan’s questions of what that phrase actually means — wouldn’t hinder the team’s coaching search. Khan even went so far as to say that if he felt it was going to be an issue and a candidate had a better option for a general manager, he would be open to making changes.
Obviously not.
The Jaguars are once again losing the battle of optics in the NFL offseason with their fans. The Jaguars fired head coach Doug Pederson after another disappointing season, as they should have, but one very specific move tainted anything else that would be coming. The Jaguars are in the end game of the search for their new head coach in the 2025 NFL offseason and no matter what direction they go, the fact of the matter is it’s always going to be tainted. The optics of whoever they hire is always going to look bad, at least in the immediate, because of one thing in particular.
General manager Trent Baalke.
When Jaguars owner Shad Khan decided to make the move of firing Pederson at the end of the season, virtually everyone was shocked that the firing of Baalke didn’t follow soon after. Even more surprise swept not just the fanbase, but the NFL as a whole, that not only was Baalke not going to be fired, but he would be heavily involved in the search for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ new head coach. There were reports as early as November during the 2024 season that Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson was the guy for the Jaguars and he wanted the job. As we got to the offseason those reports and rumors, the guy everyone with a coaching vacancy wanted, wanted the Jaguars job.
Could you believe that? Finally, the Jaguars are the apple of someone’s eye. Not just someone, but the guy everyone else says is the best and the guy everyone else wants.
But they screwed it up.
Because of Trent Baalke.
The Jaguars are set to meet with Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen, former Las Vegas Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham and former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh in person this week for a second round of interviews for their vacant head coaching position. Most believe that the job now, with Johnson out of the mix, Coen’s if he wants it. Personally, I think Coen is a perfectly good hire for what the Jaguars want to accomplish, but because of how the Jaguars have conducted themselves this offseason, it’s going to taint whoever they’re going to hire in the short term.
The Jaguars have once again, in the short term, fumbled the bag.
Their optics on their decision-making processes look like a jumbled mess, once again.
The Jacksonville Jaguars coaching search has once again left fans and analysts scratching their heads, as the team seems to be losing the optics battle in their pursuit of a new head coach.Despite having a young and promising quarterback in Trevor Lawrence, the Jaguars have struggled to attract top coaching talent, with several high-profile candidates reportedly turning down the opportunity to lead the team.
This comes as no surprise to many, as the Jaguars have a history of turmoil and dysfunction within the organization, making it a less-than-desirable destination for many coaches.
With the team now looking to fill their head coaching vacancy once again, it remains to be seen if they will be able to turn things around and finally bring stability and success to the franchise.
As the coaching search continues, the Jaguars will need to work hard to improve their reputation and show potential candidates that they are serious about building a winning team. Otherwise, they may find themselves stuck in a cycle of mediocrity for years to come.

The Ole Miss Rebels (9-3, 5-3 SEC) arrived in Jacksonville, Fla. on Sunday and have begun on-site preparations for their 2025 TaxSlayer Gator Bowl matchup against the Duke Blue Devils (9-3, 5-3 ACC). Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT and can be seen on ESPN or listened to on the Ole Miss Radio Network.
On Monday, the Rebels took to the practice field at the University of North Florida days before the game itself in EverBank Stadium. View the video above for practice footage taken from practice.
Ole Miss is currently a 17-point favorite over Duke at the time of writing. This is the first ever meeting between these two programs. This is the fourth time in program history that Ole Miss has played in the Gator Bowl, being 2-1 in those games. The last Gator Bowl appearance was in 1991 when the Rebels fell to Michigan 35-3. Ole Miss is 2-2 in postseason games under head coach Lane Kiffin.
Should Ole Miss win this bowl game, it would be its third 10-win season in the last four seasons. The last stretch of 10-win seasons occurred from 1959-62. Ole Miss entered the season ranked as high as No. 5 in the country in major polls, before three losses that were decided by a touchdown or less.
On the flip side, Duke finished the 2024 regular season, like Ole Miss, with a 9-3 overall record and 5-3 conference record. The Blue Devils have had seven games decided by a touchdown or less, with two of those games being decided in overtime. They are 6-1 in those one-score games. Of their three losses (Georgia Tech, SMU and Miami), two of them were ranked losses. They are currently riding a three-game winning streak going into bowl season.
“We’re extremely excited coming down (to Jacksonville) for a really big matchup,” Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin said about the bowl matchup. “(Manny Diaz) has done an unbelievable job in only one year there, they way they’ve played as a team and then on defense, top five in a number of categories and create a lot of chaos on defense with the way they play up front, typical wherever Manny has been. They do a great job on defense and create a lot of problems.”

The Jacksonville Jaguars will be without several key players today in their matchup against the Tennessee Titans.
The team will be without starting left tackle Walker Little for the remainder of the year as announced by head coach Doug Pederson earlier this week.
Little suffered a high-ankle sprain against the Las Vegas Raiders last week and will be shut down for the rest of the year. Backup lineman Cole Van Lanen will fill in for him and rookie tackle Javon Foster will be active today.
He’s the fifth starter to suffer a season ending injury, joining Trevor Lawrence, Christian Kirk, Evan Engram and Gabe Davis as players who are out for the year.

The team will also be with linebacker Ventrell Miller who also suffered an ankle injury and did not practice at all this week.
They signed linebacker Joe Giles-Harris to the active roster this week to add depth to the room.
Jaguars vs. Titans Week 17 INACTIVES: Savage to miss game, Wingard likely will replace him
Jacksonville Jaguars safety Andrew Wingard (42) on the sidelines during first half action. The Jacksonville Jaguars hosted the Indianapolis Colts at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville, FL Sunday, October 15, 2023. The Jaguars ended the first half with a 21 to 6 lead. Darnell Savage was also ruled out after suffering a concussion last week and not clearing the protocol this week.
After sporting a non-contact jersey for most of training camp as he rehabbed a shoulder injury, he had a quad injury that sidelined him several weeks at the start of the season.
The team planned to originally use him as a nickel corner, emphasizing his versatility to defend in different ways. But due to injuries to other players and down performance at the safety position, he was moved to safety and has remained there for most of the year.
With him sidelined this week, Andrew Wingard will likely get the start for the Jaguars at safety. Wingard had a strong training camp before injuring his knee in training camp.

[Corey Perrine/Florida Times-Union] Wingard was primed to potentially have a large role in defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen’s scheme, but was sidelined for several weeks and is only now getting his legs under him.
“He was in the plan. The whole way, the rotation, the plan from the very beginning. So, he made some plays,” Nielsen said earlier this week. “He had a good camp and then had an unfortunate injury, and we changed some things defensively, personnel-wise because of that. We’re glad to have him back.”
He was selected as the sixth captain for the team this week and will likely have a large role on defense as the team tries to close out the year strong.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are gearing up to face off against the Tennessee Titans in Week 17, and there are some key players who will be inactive for the game. One notable absence will be safety Armani Watts, who is dealing with an injury and will not be suiting up. In his place, Andrew Wingard is expected to step in and fill the void left by Watts.Wingard has been a reliable presence in the Jaguars’ secondary this season, and his versatility and playmaking ability make him a solid replacement for Watts. While it’s always tough to see a player go down with an injury, the Jaguars can rest assured knowing that Wingard is more than capable of holding down the fort in Watts’ absence.
In addition to Watts, other key inactives for the Jaguars include linebacker Quincy Williams and wide receiver Jalen Camp. Both players have been dealing with injuries and will not be available for the game against the Titans.
Despite these absences, the Jaguars are confident in the depth and talent of their roster and are ready to put up a fight against their division rivals. With Wingard stepping up and other players ready to make an impact, Jacksonville is poised to give the Titans a run for their money in Week 17. Stay tuned for what is sure to be an exciting matchup between these two AFC South teams.
