  • Pro Bowl Selections Send Message For Zac Taylor; Catch If You Can Tireless Ja’Marr Chase And Steelers Nemesis Tee Higgins; Mims, Chase Brown Game-Time Calls

Pro Bowl Selections Send Message For Zac Taylor; Catch If You Can Tireless Ja’Marr Chase And Steelers Nemesis Tee Higgins; Mims, Chase Brown Game-Time Calls

    UNDERDOG STORY

Backup tackle Devin Cochran has seen all but one of his first 151 NFL snaps come in the last three weeks as he’s come off the bench to help keep the Bengals unscathed in the playoff chase.

With Taylor basically calling rookie right tackle Amarius Mims (ankle/hand) a game-time decision after he didn’t practice Thursday, we could see Cochran again.

Either way it works out, what a three weeks it’s been for him.

He found out he was making his first start in Tennessee about 90 minutes before the Dec. 15 game when Cody Ford got ill and couldn’t back up left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. The next week against Cleveland, Cochran played 22 snaps as Mims dealt with those ankle and hand issues and last Saturday night he played the final 60 snaps after Mims took the first 30.

And, oh yeah, he missed Tuesday’s walkthrough when his first child, Ezekiel “Zeke,” Cochran, was born in the middle of the night.

Following it all has been offensive line guru Jim McNally, the Bengals’ long-time assistant coach on their first two Super Bowl teams and later a consultant to offensive line coach Frank Pollack.

It was when he was a consultant a few years ago during the undrafted Cochran’s rookie year that McNally bumped into him in the lobby of the AC Hotel at The Banks.

“He gave me a compliment of how I looked in training camp. I was like, ‘Really?” Cochran said this week. “From that point on. The next offseason I was looking for some trips I could make to find out different things like I do every year. I reached out and he was excited to help.”

Cochran went to the 81-year-old McNally’s hometown of Buffalo, N.Y., for a couple of days and got the full Mac treatment, which is intense teaching all the time.

“Dude, he’s a maniac. You ever see him do pullups?” Cochran asked. “He’s big on fast feet, fast hands, proactive hands. Taking the fight to the defender. Like Frank,” Cochran said. “Eliminating time and space.”

Cochran, a Vanderbilt undergrad and Georgia Tech grad student, is used to homework. He consumes it all from Pollack and assistant O-line coach Derek Frazier. And if he can do or get extra, he does. McNally has also been sending along critiques. There may be a 60-year gap there, but football closes it fast.

“He’s been happy and that’s been awesome,” said Cochran, who knows his own game. “I think (he likes) the mindset. He’s an old-school guy. He likes that brawling, brutal type of thing.”

The Pro Bowl selections have been announced, and there is a clear message for Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor: unleash the dynamic duo of Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins on the field.

Chase, the tireless playmaker out of LSU, has been a force to be reckoned with all season long. His speed, agility, and hands have made him one of the most dangerous receivers in the league. Higgins, on the other hand, has been a thorn in the side of the Pittsburgh Steelers, consistently making big plays when it matters most.

With these two weapons at his disposal, Taylor has the opportunity to create some game-changing plays in the Pro Bowl. Whether it’s a deep bomb to Chase or a clutch catch by Higgins, the possibilities are endless.

But Taylor should also keep an eye on other potential game-time playmakers, such as Denzel Mims and Chase Brown. These two have shown flashes of brilliance throughout the season and could provide some much-needed spark in crucial moments.

So, Taylor, the message is clear: catch if you can with Chase and Higgins, and be ready to make some game-time calls with Mims and Brown. The Pro Bowl is your chance to showcase the talent of these young stars, so make the most of it.

  • Joe Burrow Salutes Ja’Marr Chase’s Jewel Of A Season; In His 15th Bengals-Steelers Game, Mike Hilton Talks How Defense Has Regrouped

Joe Burrow Salutes Ja’Marr Chase’s Jewel Of A Season; In His 15th Bengals-Steelers Game, Mike Hilton Talks How Defense Has Regrouped

    IRON MIKE

No one knows a Bengals-Steelers game like Cincinnati slot cornerback Mike Hilton.

He’s played in 14 of them, seven for each side, and won nine of them. He knows exactly what Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is preaching this week. Even if the Ravens wrap up the AFC North with a win over the Browns before Saturday’s nightcap, Hilton expects the Steelers’ full measure even though they’re in even if they lose to the Bengals.

“It’s going to be a bloodbath,” Hilton said after Tuesday’s practice. “One team is in the playoffs. We’re fighting for our playoff lives, so it’s going to be fireworks.

“If I know (Tomlin) he’s talking to the guys right now and getting them fired up before Saturday. We expect to be challenged. All their guys are going to be going. They’re on a three-game skid right now. I’m sure they want to catch some momentum in the playoffs.”

    MORE IRON MIKE

And no one knows this Bengals defense better than Hilton.

Since coming over from Pittsburgh for the 2021 season, he has been one of the faces of it. He’s such a constant image, Hilton and safety Vonn Bell take turns running the players-only secondary meetings on off days, a ritual that grew out of the first playoff run in 2021.

Hilton became one of defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo’s core players while enhancing his rep as one of the best slot cornerbacks in the game and took it to the next level with brilliant playoff performances.

This season, his fourth with the Bengals and ninth in the league, has been a time of transition. Hilton has rarely been on the field on third down. While injuries rocked the front line and secondary, the Bengals lost four games in which they scored 33 points or more.

The last time was four weeks ago in a 44-38 loss to the Steelers at Paycor. Since then, the Bengals have won four straight during a stretch they lead the league with 12 turnovers and are third in opponent passer rating. It was about that time, coming out of the bye into the Pittsburgh game, the Bengals tweaked it a bit.

“Lou has simplified things. Kind of made guys settle down. Really just know their jobs and go out there and make plays. Obviously, the last month we’re playing a lot better,” Hilton said.

“Usually what happens, there are two calls when there’s motion,” Hilton said. “Now there’s one call. Just line up, know your assignment, know your matchup.”

Hilton says that hasn’t cut down on what they can use. By week 18, it’s all on tape, anyway, he says. And he says it’s not rocket science what they have to do Saturday after Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson check-downed to the second-best game of his career with 414 yards passing.

A total of 22 of Wilson’s completions went to tight ends and running backs for 245 yards as Pro Football Focus had the Bengals for 14 missed tackles.

“He was outside the pocket. That’s what he’s done his whole career,” Hilton said. “He’s a Hall of Fame quarterback throwing for 450 on us and made us look real bad.

“Guys are playing better. I think we’ll be locked in,” said Hilton of stopping the underneath stuff. “Just being tighter. The checkdown can be three, four, five yards. We need to limit that. Can’t miss any tackles and we have to get hats to the football.”

It turns out that Hilton believes he’s playing his best ball of the season at the same time his defense is. Maybe it’s no coincidence. Long believed to be one of the best blitzers in the game (Hilton says he’s the best), Anarumo has unleashed him since the bye, Hilton says, and he has been a scourge.

In the last four games, Hilton has 22 tackles working mostly on first and second downs. Five for loss, as many in that stretch as feared quarterback stuffers up front such as Nick Bosa, Cam Jordan and Leonard Williams. And one fewer than T.J. Watt.

And even when those blitzes don’t get there, they’ve altered a spate of plays.

“Those (blitzes) are called. A lot more than early in the year,” Hilton said. “I think that’s why my play has risen. I’ve been able to make a lot of plays. Lou is just opening me up and made me who I am.”

Hilton estimates he blitzed two or three times against Washington rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels in the third game of the year, when Daniels completed 91.3% of his passes in the Bengals’ 38-33 loss. Hilton thinks he did that on the first series against Denver rookie quarterback Bo Nix in a game the Bengals held the Broncos to six yards on six overtime snaps.

“Knowing the cadence. just me honing into my framework. Just learning the framework,’ said Hilton, whose goal is to time a blitz so well he swipes a handoff. “What I do, nobody else can do. I feel like I bring a lot of value to the team.”

    SLANTS AND SCREENS

Hilton is certainly valued by the local media. On Tuesday, Mike Petraglia, head of the Cincinnati chapter of the Pro Football Writers, went to Hilton’s locker and presented him with the 2024 Media Cooperation Award.

“Mike Hilton’s willingness to always be available and professional with the media after wins, difficult losses, and during the week makes him a fitting selection for this honor,” said Petraglia, the veteran scribe who has covered both Tom Brady and Joe Burow on a daily basis …

Which brought up Hilton’s status as he heads into the last game of his contract year. On Tuesday, even though it’s been four years ago, he’s still salty about the Steelers letting him go. “They didn’t want me”.

So he sees himself as a Bengal, as does everybody else. His red-zone interception of Ryan Tannehill in the AFC Divisional in Tennessee in 2021 and his eight tackles and two hits of Josh Allen in the next AFC Divisional in snowy Buffalo are etched in Bengaldom.

    Hilton, 30, isn’t sure what’s next.

“I would love to finish my career here,” Hilton said. “In this business, you never know when. When the time comes, we’ll figure it out.” …

If you want to know the status of running back Chase Brown (ankle), right tackle Amarius Mims (hand), and left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. (leg), check back later in the week because head coach Zac Taylor had nothing Tuesday. The injury report isn’t much to go on because it was an estimation of a walkthrough.

Chase Brown is listed as did not practice while Mims and Orlando Brown Jr. went as limited …

Orlando Brown Jr. played all 90 snaps last Saturday as they monitor his fibula …

Defensive tackle Kris Jenkins (knee) was limited …

So were Burrow (wrist/knee) and wide receiver Tee Higgins (ankle/knee), which is how they went most of last week. Higgins was even considered questionable heading into Denver even though Taylor indicated he was good to go. And he was with 131 yards and three touchdowns …

Joe Burrow Salutes Ja’Marr Chase’s Jewel Of A Season; In His 15th Bengals-Steelers Game, Mike Hilton Talks How Defense Has Regrouped

The Cincinnati Bengals have been on fire this season, and much of their success can be attributed to the dynamic duo of quarterback Joe Burrow and wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase. Burrow has been lighting up the field with his pinpoint accuracy and leadership, while Chase has been making spectacular plays week in and week out.

In a recent interview, Burrow couldn’t help but praise Chase for his incredible season, calling it a “jewel” of a performance. The chemistry between the two players is undeniable, and it’s clear that they have a special connection on the field.

Meanwhile, veteran cornerback Mike Hilton recently played in his 15th Bengals-Steelers game, and he spoke about how the defense has regrouped and improved throughout the season. Hilton highlighted the team’s resilience and determination to overcome challenges, and he believes that they are peaking at just the right time.

As the Bengals gear up for their upcoming matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, fans are excited to see what Burrow, Chase, Hilton, and the rest of the team will bring to the table. With a strong offense and a resurgent defense, the Bengals are poised to make a deep playoff run and continue their impressive season.

  • Bengals’ Ja’Marr Chase closing in on triple crown

Bengals’ Ja’Marr Chase closing in on triple crown

CINCINNATI — At the time, Ja’Marr Chase wanted to leave it a mystery.

When he scored a touchdown in a Week 11 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, the Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver grabbed the towel hanging from the back of his pants, kneeled down and wiped the football as if it were a baby’s bottom. It was a tribute to a touchdown Steve Smith scored in 2005.

Why, exactly, wasn’t something Chase wanted to disclose. That changed on Wednesday. Chase knew he could accomplish a feat only Smith and a few others had in their careers — winning the receiving triple crown.

If Chase has an even mildly productive game Saturday against the Pittsburgh Steelers (8 p.m., ESPN/ABC), he’ll finish the season as the NFL leader in catches, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. Since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, only four players led the league in all three categories — Jerry Rice (1990), Sterling Sharpe (1992), Smith (2005) and Cooper Kupp (2021).

The way Chase has described the accolade has felt nonchalant. But he knows this season is continuing his trajectory to one day be remembered as one of the NFL’s best receivers.

“If not now, then soon,” Chase said.

Entering Saturday, Chase has a firm grip on the triple crown. He has 117 catches (leads the Detroit Lions‘ Amon-Ra St. Brown by 8), 1,612 receiving yards (leads the Minnesota VikingsJustin Jefferson by 133) and receiving touchdowns (leads St. Brown and the Washington CommandersTerry McLaurin by four).

Chase broke his own record for most receiving yards in franchise history, owns the mark for the most catches by a Bengal in a season and needs two receiving touchdowns to pass Carl Pickens’ mark set in 1995.

Some of this has been a byproduct of how the Bengals (8-8) function offensively. Coach Zac Taylor has stated his desire to be the best passing team in the NFL and has been committed to that concept for years. This season, the Bengals are second in pass attempts, and quarterback Joe Burrow, Chase’s longtime teammate, is having a career year. Burrow leads all passers with 4,641 yards and 42 touchdowns. His 76.7 QBR is second to the 78.0 of the Baltimore Ravens Lamar Jackson.

But it’s also a testament to the work Chase has put into becoming a more complete player this season. When Cincinnati didn’t re-sign veteran Tyler Boyd, that left a void at slot receiver.

Chase was eager to fill that void. Each morning, het met with assistant Troy Walters, his position coach, to study routes. And it’s paid off.

This season, Chase is the only receiver to have more than 400 receiving yards when lined up in the slot and 1,000 yards when lined up outside, according to ESPN Research.

Chase told ESPN that things started to click for him after his second year in the league in 2022. But this season has produced a significant evolution in his knowledge.

“This is the first year that I just know (it) for a fact,” he said. “The confidence that I had was just like, I knew it already.”

It’s been such a great year that it feels easy to forget how it started. Chase did not participate in training camp because of a dispute about a new contract that never materialized. But even though he wasn’t in cleats, he was still actively involved as he attended nearly every practice.

During walkthroughs and practices, Chase stood next to Walters as he called out plays. The receiver picked up on them immediately.

Now, it all comes second nature.

“Really all of (the receivers) know where they line up, what route they have, just by the name of the play,” Walters told ESPN. “I’m getting to the point where now I can say a formation and maybe a certain motion, and they know what the play is.”

All of that has led to a massive season. On Thursday, Chase was named to his fourth Pro Bowl in as many seasons. If he is named to the Associated Press All-Pro team, he’ll be the first Bengal to earn the honor since 2015.

During his mid-week news conference, Chase shrugged off a lot of the talk of accolades and instead shifted the focus to Saturday’s game. The Bengals need to win and also need losses from the Denver Broncos (9-7) and Miami Dolphins (8-8) in order to make the playoffs.

But his teammates know how special getting a triple crown will be for Chase. Burrow said he will do whatever’s in his power to help his longtime friend hit all three marks.

And while it might not sink in for Chase in real time, it has already settled in for those around him about what the rare feat means.

“I can tell my kids one day that I played with an MVP quarterback and a triple crown winner,” said Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins. “Not a lot of people can do that.”

The Cincinnati Bengals’ rookie sensation, Ja’Marr Chase, is making a strong case for the NFL’s triple crown this season. Chase currently leads all rookies in receiving yards, receiving touchdowns, and yards per reception, putting him in prime position to capture the prestigious award.

With his explosive playmaking ability and chemistry with quarterback Joe Burrow, Chase has quickly established himself as one of the most dynamic wide receivers in the league. His ability to stretch the field and make big plays has been a key factor in the Bengals’ success this season.

Chase’s impressive stats and impact on the field have not gone unnoticed, as he continues to garner attention and accolades from fans and analysts alike. If he can maintain his stellar performance down the stretch, there’s no doubt that Ja’Marr Chase will be a strong contender for the NFL’s triple crown.

As the Bengals gear up for a playoff push, all eyes will be on Chase as he looks to solidify his place among the league’s elite receivers. Stay tuned as Ja’Marr Chase closes in on the triple crown and continues to make a name for himself in the NFL.
