  • Trump Justice Department fires officials who investigated Trump and launches ‘special project’ into January 6 cases

    CNN
     —

More than a dozen officials who worked on the criminal investigations into Donald Trump have been fired, according to sources familiar with the matter.

A letter from acting Attorney General James McHenry to the officials said they cannot be “trusted” to “faithfully” implement Trump’s agenda.

“You played a significant role in prosecuting President Trump. The proper functioning of government critically depends on the trust superior officials place in their subordinates,” McHenry wrote. “Given your significant role in prosecuting the President, I do not believe that the leadership of the Department can trust you to assist in implementing the President’s agenda faithfully.”

The firings come as the the Trump administration is taking concrete steps to investigate prosecutors who oversaw the criminal cases against January 6 defendants after Trump vowed to seek retribution as a key pledge of his campaign, according to multiple sources who have seen an internal memo on the matter.

Ed Martin, the interim US attorney in Washington, DC, has launched an investigation into prosecutors who brought obstruction charges under US Code 1512(c) against some rioters that were ultimately tossed because of a Supreme Court decision last summer.

Referring to the effort as a “special project,” Martin wrote in the memo issued Monday that the attorneys should hand over “all information you have related to the use of 1512 charges, including all files, documents, notes, emails, and other information” to two of the office’s long-term prosecutors who must submit a report on the probe by Friday.

“Obviously the use was a great failure of our office – s. ct. decision – and we need to get to the bottom of it,” the memo reads, referencing the June Supreme Court ruling that limited the power of federal prosecutors to pursue obstruction charges against the January 6 rioters.

The demand for documents also extends to prosecutors who have since left the US attorney’s office.

The move comes as the Justice Department has already seen a dramatic shakeup as officials connected to high-profile investigations have been reassigned, including the now-dismissed case against Trump himself for his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

Prosecutors who worked on January 6 cases told CNN that the memo raises concerns that Trump’s DOJ is beginning to “investigate the investigators,” as he’s long threatened. One person who worked on Capitol riot cases told CNN that prosecutors don’t know whether this investigation is looking to bring criminal or civil charges, and that some are starting to hire their own lawyers for their defense.

A senior administration official familiar with the Martin email describes this as a “fact-finding” mission, noting a “huge waste of resources.“

This letter was sent to various US Department of Justice officials being fired.

“The prior office screwed up by filing hundreds of cases that ended up getting thrown out by the Supreme Court, it is worth getting to the bottom of poor decision making,” the person said.

CNN has reached out to the Justice Department for comment.

Martin, a hardline, socially conservative activist and commentator who was an was an organizer with the “Stop the Steal” movement, was tapped for the role last week. Since starting the job, he has praised Trump for issuing mass pardons for January 6 defendants.

He also successfully lobbied a judge to toss out travel restrictions imposed on members of the Oath Keepers after they were released from prison, saying: “If a judge decided that Jim Biden, General Mark Milley, or another individual were forbidden to visit America’s capital — even after receiving a last-minute, preemptive pardon from the former President — I believe most Americans would object. The individuals referenced in our motion have had their sentences commuted – period, end of sentence.”

This story has been updated with additional developments.

The Trump Justice Department has made a shocking move by firing officials who were involved in investigating former President Donald Trump, as well as launching a ‘special project’ into cases related to the January 6 Capitol insurrection.

This decision has raised concerns about potential political interference in the justice system, as well as questions about the independence of the Department of Justice under the Trump administration.

Many critics have pointed out that this move could be seen as an attempt to obstruct justice and protect Trump and his allies from facing accountability for their actions.

The firing of these officials and the launch of the ‘special project’ into January 6 cases has sparked outrage and calls for transparency and accountability within the Department of Justice.

It remains to be seen how this controversial decision will impact ongoing investigations and the pursuit of justice in cases related to the Trump administration.

  • Today’s Final Jeopardy – Monday, January 27, 2025 – The Jeopardy! Fan

Warning: This page contains spoilers for the January 27, 2025, game of Jeopardy! — please do not scroll down if you wish to avoid being spoiled. Please note that the game airs as early as noon Eastern in some U.S. television markets.

Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category World Capitals) for Monday, January 27, 2025 (Season 41, Game 101):

Home to more than 400,000, it’s the only world capital in the “Roaring Forties” latitudes

    (correct response beneath the contestants)

    Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Rishabh Wuppalapati, a student at the University of Pennsylvania from Vernon Hills, Illinois
    Rishabh Wuppalapati on Jeopardy!
Will Wallace, a game design director from Austin, Texas
    Will Wallace on Jeopardy!
Alison Betts, a writer & creative executive originally from San Jose, California
    Alison Betts on Jeopardy!

    Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

It has become time to see who the best player overall was over the past twelve months. Who wouldn’t be excited for the start of the Tournament of Champions? Our first quarterfinal is between Alison Betts, Will Wallace, and Rishabh Wuppalapati. Alison is favored coming in to this match, but Quarterfinal #1 often sees early jitters; upsets have been known to happen!

Regarding excitement, I would certainly posit that anyone who professes to be a major fan—especially someone who might put out show-related content—had best be excited to watch every single time you hear Johnny Gilbert say his opening words at the start of every single episode surrounding our fine game–regular or spin-off. If hearing that from Johnny doesn’t excite you, what are you even doing here? (And before I get accused of retconning by a certain Substack writer, my own personal beef has always been with the community, not the actual 30 to 60 minutes contained within the show itself. I still absolutely love watching the show itself and following the game.)

(The following write-up is original content and is copyright 2025 The Jeopardy! Fan. It may not be copied without linked attribution back to this page.)

With a metro area population of over 400,000, Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, is the world’s southernmost capital city. It should also come as no surprise by its position in the “Roaring Forties”—the high-wind latitudes in the southern hemisphere—that it is the windiest city in the world.

The “Roaring Forties” have higher winds compared to the northern hemisphere at that latitude because there are significantly fewer land masses in the southern hemisphere between 40º and 50º south to act as a windbreak. The route’s suitability for quick sailing to the Dutch East Indies was discovered by the Dutch in the early 17th century and named the Brouwer Route.

The key to getting this clue correct is remembering that “Roaring Forties” is a term exclusively used to refer to winds in the southern hemisphere; from there, picking the southernmost capital should be—if you’ll pardon the meteorological pun—a breeze.

  • Final Jeopardy Today January 27, 2025 – Question, Answer, Wages & Winner

The Final Jeopardy clue for Monday, January 27, 2025 can be found below. The Jeopardy Tournament of Champions for 2025 has finally arrived, and both Mehal Shah and Drew Goins from last week have grabbed a place, so we’ll see them later in the bracket. Today’s episode will feature game design director Will Wallace from Texas, writer and creative executive Alison Betts from San Jose, and U. Penn student Rishabh Wuppalapati from Illinois. Here are the question and answer for Final Jeopardy on 1/27/2025, including the wagers and the winner of the episode.

Final Jeopardy Question for January 27

The Final Jeopardy question for January 27, 2025 is in the category of “World Capitals” and has the following clue:

Home to more than 400,000, it’s the only world capital in the “Roaring Forties” latitudes

To prevent any spoilers on the answer, it has been put at the bottom of this guide.

Final Jeopardy Wagers and Winner for January 27

Will became the winner of the January 27 match and became the first semifinalist for the tournament. This is despite no contestant being able to get the right answer for Final Jeopardy.

With correct answers to many high-value clues, Will had $15,200. He lost $4,401 with his answer of “Reykjavik,” but still had enough to win the game with $10,799.

Alison bet enough of her $9,800 total to win the match. However, she lost $5,401 with her answer of “Washington D.C.” and came in second with $4,399.

Rishabh didn’t have enough in the bank to catch Will, but he still wagered all of his $5,800. He also guessed “Reykjavik” incorrectly, and ended in third place with $0.

Final Jeopardy Answer for January 27

The correct answer for Final Jeopardy on January 27, 2025 is “What is Wellington, New Zealand?”

Figuring out which world capital the clue is talking about comes down to knowing what the southernmost countries are located. While Chile and Argentina are among the southernmost countries in the world, its capitals are in the middle. There are also some island groups, like the Falkland Islands, that make the list, but the mention of the “Roaring Forties” should tilt the contestants to New Zealand and thereby its capital Wellington.

The “Roaring Forties” refers to latitudes in the Southern Hemisphere between 40 and 50 degrees south and are named for the generally strong, continuous winds in this zone. Interestingly, this region is so perilous that it was turned into a movie called “The Roaring Forties” in 1982 directed by French filmmaker Christian de Chalonge.

Logan Paul, GUNTHER And Seth Rollins Face Off

GUNTHER and Seth Rollins had a standard babyface-heel faceoff, but this segment really leveled up when Logan Paul arrived. This man got so much heat.

While getting booed loudly and receiving “you suck!” chants, Paul screamed over the Atlanta crowd. Paul then reminded Rollins and GUNTHER that these passionate reactions were attention.

Paul declared for the Royal Rumble. GUNTHER said he hopes Paul wins because he wants to embarrass Logan Paul at WrestleMania. Not much actually happened during this segment, but it was very loud and heated.

    Opening Segment Grade: B+

    War Raiders Def. Judgment Day

Early in the match, JD McDonagh smacked the back of his head against the announce table after a moonsault. It was a very scary spot. Cole and McAfee spent the rest of the match putting over JD. They were in awe as to how he kept going. Even when JD got back on the apron, fans cheered him out of respect.

The commentary team continued to put over JD’s big head as he connected with headbutts on his opponents. At one point, Erik hit a knee to the back of JD’s head.

The Judgment Day just came up short, and the War Raiders won with the War Machine. This felt like JD’s coming out party.

WWE World Tag Team Title Match Grade: A-

    Rey Mysterio Def. Xavier Woods

Xavier Woods reserved seats for his family, but they didn’t show up…yet.

Woods followed in Kofi’s footsteps with his new gear: Black jeans and fist tape.

Woods’ family finally showed up, but revealed they were wearing “New Day Sucks” t-shirts. The distraction was enough to cost Woods the match.

Woods and Kofi losing does not feel like they’re getting jobbed out. It feels like part of a bigger story where the New Day will eventually look in the mirror and realize they made a mistake by turning on Big E. I could see a reunion as soon as WrestleMania.

Rey Mysterio vs. Xavier Woods Grade: B

    Jey Uso Yeets Live

Jey Uso’s entrance lasted several minutes and was lit as ever in Atlanta. In attendance were Atlanta rappers Killer Mike, Lil Baby, Lil Yachty, 2 Chainz and Quavo, who accompanied Uso to the ring with the Smoking Skull belt.

Good thing Jey Uso didn’t have to wrestle, because this was a lot of yeeting. While cutting his promo, he seemed a bit winded and I don’t blame him. This was a good workout for the conditioning he’ll need in the Royal Rumble Match.

Uso vowed to win the Royal Rumble and get his revenge on GUNTHER, something I think is more realistic than it sounds given how stacked the Royal Rumble is.

    Jey Uso Segment Grade: B

Morgan And Rodriguez Def. Naomi And Belair

After being on top of the women’s division and all over TV, Liv Morgan is in a transitional phase headed into WrestleMania. She didn’t even receive and entrance.

Cole noted Jade Cargill eliminated Naomi in last year’s Royal Rumble. He also pointed out that Liv Morgan had finished as the runner-up in the last two Royal Rumble matches.

Bianca hit Liv Morgan with 17 punches and the crowd counted along to every one of them.

Dirty Dom tried to get out of the doghouse with a distraction. For his troubles, Belair hit a dive on Dom to the outside. The led to a two-on-one advantage where Rodriguez slammed Naomi on the apron, leading to a Morgan win.

After shouting out Georgia Championship Wrestling and WCW, Michael Cole put himself over as the only commentator to be undefeated at WrestleMania. Of course, this also happened in Atlanta. Pat McAfee went onto roast Cole’s gear and weight at WrestleMania 27. They also showed footage of Cole’s botched handshake with Quavo from earlier in the night.

Morgan and Rodriguez vs. Belair and Naomi Grade: B+

Paul Heyman Reveals WWE 2K25 Cover

Paul Heyman appeared to reveal the cover of WWE 2K25. Roman Reigns was on the cover, as was teased on the January 6 Raw.

Paul Heyman called himself the one behind the one in 29-1. Heyman name-dropped Elon Musk, saying when Musk colonizes Mars, Roman Reigns will be the best on that planet, too.

Heyman, who was blowing up during this promo worse than Jey Uso from earlier, called the Royal Rumble field “Roman wannabes.” Suspiciously, he did not mention CM Punk, and CM Punk did not interrupt him. Drew McIntyre did.

Fans chanted “we want Roman” as soon as Drew began to speak. They also chanted “we don’t care!” as he ran down Reigns.

McIntyre told Heyman to warn “his boy” that he’s coming for him. Heyman said he’d let Roman Reigns know, but Drew said he wasn’t talking about Reigns. He was talking about CM Punk.

    Paul Heyman Reveal Grade: B

    Drew McIntyre Def. Sami Zayn

Early in the match, McIntyre taunted Sami Zayn about his record against him. 10-0.

Despite the “we don’t care” chants from earlier, there were dueling chants of “let’s go Sami/let’s go Drew!”

Sami Zayn was bleeding from the nose the hard way. Not to be outdone (though he was outdone by JD earlier in the night), Drew McIntyre missed a Claymore Kick and landed on the table where he hit the back of his head.

I have a feeling that Zayn will get a measure of revenge by eliminating McIntyre at the Royal Rumble.

McIntyre won with his feet on the ropes. 11-0. After the match, Drew continued to beat on Sami, but Cody Rhodes made the save. Owens attacked Rhodes as Owens and McIntyre beat Cody down. Then, for the second week in a row, Sami Zayn hit a Helluva Kick on a babyface. This time, on Cody Rhodes. KO was pleased.

WWE Raw Main Event Grade: B

CM Punk And Cody Rhodes Face Off

With the two world titles hanging above, Rhodes cut an impassioned promo after the match and before WWE Raw went off the air. Rhodes was then interrupted by CM Punk.

Punk gave Cody a pep talk. He said he’s Cody’s friend, and because of a promise Punk made to Dusty Rhodes, he’ll always be Cody’s friend. Punk said the world championship changes you for the worse, just as it did when he was around Day 300 of his historic world title reign.

Cody called back to his segment with Punk last year before the Royal Rumble, where Punk quietly predicted The Rock would try to take his spot. Cody then asked Prescient Punk what’s going to happen next. Punk said he’d win the Royal Rumble and take Cody’s title, thereby stabbing him in the front. This faceoff wasn’t nearly as good as their segment from last year, but it did the trick.

  • Will Luka Doncic play tonight against the Washington Wizards? Latest update on the Dallas Mavericks star’s injury report (January 27, 2025) | NBA News

Will Luka Doncic play tonight against the Washington Wizards? Latest update on the Dallas Mavericks star's injury report (January 27, 2025)
Is Luka Doncic playing tonight? (Image via USA TODAY Sports)

Luka Doncic’s injury continues to be a major concern for the Dallas Mavericks as the star guard has been sidelined with a calf injury. As of January 27, 2025, Doncic remains out for the Mavericks’ game against the Washington Wizards, which will take place at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. This news comes as the Mavericks are looking to adjust their lineup with several key players on the injury report.
Luka Doncic, who has been a driving force for the Dallas Mavericks this season, is not the only notable player absent. Alongside him, the Mavericks will also be missing other key contributors like Dante Exum (wrist), Dereck Lively (ankle), Maxi Kleber (foot), Dwight Powell (hip), and Naji Marshall (illness). The team’s injury woes have significantly affected their lineup, but they will be hoping for positive news regarding Doncic’s recovery.

The injury to Luka Doncic comes at a critical point in the season, as he has been averaging 24.4 points per game, ranking him among the top scorers in the league. His absence leaves a significant gap in the Dallas Mavericks’ offense and defense, and the team will need players like Kyrie Irving, Spencer Dinwiddie, and P.J. Washington to step up in his place.
Dallas, which has posted a 24-22 record so far this season, will need to adjust its game plan to account for Doncic’s absence. Without their star player, the Mavericks are likely to rely more heavily on their shooting and defensive depth, as they face off against the struggling Wizards, who currently hold a 6-38 record.
The Dallas Mavericks‘ injury report, especially Doncic’s calf issue, is a key talking point among fans and analysts. While there are no immediate updates on a timetable for his return, Mavericks’ fans will be anxiously awaiting news as the team works to navigate these challenges. The hope is that Luka Doncic will make a full recovery soon and return to the court to help push the Dallas Mavericks back into playoff contention.
Also read: Will Nikola Jokic play tonight against the Chicago Bulls? Latest update on the Denver Nuggets star’s injury report (January 27, 2025)
For now, the team is in the hands of their remaining healthy players, with the focus on staying competitive in the absence of their star guard. As Dallas faces a tough road ahead, all eyes will be on Doncic’s recovery and whether he can make a swift return to help the Mavericks’ playoff hopes.

The Dallas Mavericks are set to take on the Washington Wizards tonight, but the big question on everyone’s mind is whether star player Luka Doncic will be suiting up for the game. Doncic has been dealing with a nagging injury and his status for tonight’s game is still up in the air.

According to the latest update on the injury report, Doncic is considered questionable for tonight’s game against the Wizards. The Mavericks are being cautious with their young star, as they want him to fully recover before returning to the court.

Doncic has been a key player for the Mavericks this season, averaging impressive numbers across the board. His presence on the court is always felt and his absence would definitely be a blow to the team.

Fans will have to wait for the official announcement closer to game time to see if Doncic will be able to play tonight. In the meantime, Mavericks fans are hoping for a speedy recovery for their star player. Stay tuned for more updates on Luka Doncic’s status for tonight’s game against the Washington Wizards. #NBAnews #DallasMavericks #LukaDoncic #WashingtonWizards

The Knicks, on the other hand, have been struggling recently, losing four of their last five games. However, they have a talented roster and will be looking to turn things around against the Grizzlies.

In terms of odds, the Grizzlies are favored to win this game. They have been playing at a high level and have the momentum on their side. However, the Knicks are a tough team to beat at home and could pull off an upset.

Recent trends show that the Grizzlies have been performing well against the spread, covering in four of their last five games. The Knicks, on the other hand, have been struggling to cover, failing to cover in four of their last five games.

As for the best bet for this game, taking the Grizzlies to cover the spread seems like a solid option. They have been playing well and should be able to take care of business against the struggling Knicks. Look for Ja Morant to have a big game and lead the Grizzlies to victory.

  • Picks, Odds & Predictions for Monday, January 27

This article is part of our College Basketball Picks series.

Woof. After an 0-3 Sunday, I’m on an 0-6 slide, so I advise everyone to go a little lighter today while I navigate one of the many dips that occur during the college basketball season. Let’s remember, even with the slide, I’m only down 4 units on the year. There will be rough stretches, particularly in January and February when conference familiarity tightens the lines, which is why any successful bettor plays the long game. Here’s to learning from yesterday (maybe not three road favorites today?) and having a winning day today.

Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles at Troy Trojans

This is at the very high end of where I would put this number, and I think there is compelling evidence that the Golden Eagles can keep this close. In their conference road losses, Southern Miss was competitive at No. 145 JMU, No. 110 S. Alabama, and took No. 160 Texas State to OT. The Golden Eagles are also 5-1 SU and ATS in their last six contests against Troy, a team that doesn’t blow a lot of teams out.

College Basketball Best Bet: Southern Miss +11.5 (universal)

SE Louisiana Lions vs Houston Christian Huskies

SELA is a team that has been good to us, and I like their situation today. The Lions have won five straight in this series and are off to a 6-3 start in Southland play with the three losses coming to the top teams in the conference. HCU has played better of late but this would be their best road win (by far), and they may have to do it without Demari Williams. Off a 23-point home win over No. 292 Incarnate Word, the Lions stay hot and handle the No. 280 Huskies tonight.

College Basketball Best Bet: SE Louisiana -5.5 (@ BetRivers)

UCLA Bruins at Southern Cal Trojans

After Mick Cronin’s infamous “toughness” rant, the Bruins have come out swinging with three straight wins, including an impressive battle against Wisconsin. USC reminds me a lot of Iowa — an all-offense, no-defense finesse team that the Bruins should pound into submission. I think the wrong team is favored here, and I’m going to take full advantage.

College Basketball Best Bet: UCLA +1.5 (@ FanDuel)

    Monday College Basketball Best Bets:

Here’s a recap of my best college basketball bets for Monday, January 27:

    • Southern Miss +11.5 (universal)
    • SE Louisiana -5.5 (@ BetRivers)
    • UCLA +1.5 (@ FanDuel)

For up-to-date information on the latest college basketball betting odds and props from multiple sportsbooks, check out the college basketball odds page on RotoWire.

Looking ahead to Monday’s sports action, here are some picks, odds, and predictions to keep an eye on:

    NBA:
    – Philadelphia 76ers vs. Detroit Pistons: The 76ers are favored by 7 points in this matchup. Look for Philadelphia to come out strong and cover the spread.
    – Dallas Mavericks vs. Utah Jazz: The Jazz are favored by 4.5 points in this game. Utah has been playing well at home, so they should be able to cover the spread.

    NHL:
    – Edmonton Oilers vs. Arizona Coyotes: The Oilers are slight favorites in this game. Expect a close matchup, but Edmonton should come out on top.
