  • How could Man City look after January signings?

    Omar Marmoush

Omar Marmoush offers Manchester City another option up front [Getty Images]

Manchester City have acted in the transfer market this month as they try to avoid their worst season since 2008-09 – the season they were taken over by their Abu Dhabi owners.

Earlier this month, boss Pep Guardiola said: “In the summer the club thought about it and I said ‘no, I don’t want to make any signings’.

“I relied a lot on these guys and thought I can do it again.

“But after the injuries – wow – maybe we should have done it.”

City – who sit fifth in the Premier League – have already signed three players this month for a combined £123m.

They are Eintracht Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush, Palmeiras defender Vitor Reis and Lens centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov.

They are also interested in Juventus full-back Andrea Cambiaso and Real Valladolid defender Juma Bah.

City had not made a significant signing in January since 2018 when they brought in Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte for £57m.

So how could City look after these signings?

    Where will Marmoush fit in?

The standout signing so far is Egypt forward Omar Marmoush.

The 25-year-old is the second top scorer in the Bundesliga this season with 15 goals in 17 games for Frankfurt – only behind Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane. He tops the assist charts in Germany with nine.

Marmoush is fast and can play anywhere along the front line.

Last season he played as a lone striker for Frankfurt – scoring 17 goals in all competitions – and this season he has played in a front two.

“He is really dynamic, a wide forward who can play through the middle,” said German football expert Raphael Honigstein.

“Some people have compared him to Mohamed Salah, perhaps not as tricky or as explosive but his finishing is incredible.”

But where will he play at City? While Erling Haaland is not having a stellar season by his standards, he has still scored 23 goals and would expect to remain the number nine.

City never properly replaced Julian Alvarez after his departure to Atletico Madrid in the summer.

Alvarez used to fill in for Haaland as a striker sometimes and play elsewhere too.

It feels like the wing is the most likely option for Marmoush now.

BBC Sport’s chief football news reporter Simon Stone said: “Given his nine-and-a-half year contract, I think it is pretty safe to conclude Marmoush is not replacing Haaland, which means he is going to get one of the wide slots.

“Jeremy Doku and Savinho have both excelled at times but they have also flattered to deceive and on too many occasions have not delivered the penetration required – and not scored enough goals either.

“It is in these positions I would expect to see Marmoush.”

    How about the two centre-backs?

City could do with a right-back – but both defenders they have signed so far are primarily centre-backs.

Brazilian Reis, 19, moved from Palmeiras for £29.6m and Uzbekistan’s Khusanov, 20, has joined for £33.6m.

    But will either play immediately?

“At the age of 19, with only 22 senior appearances at Palmeiras behind him, it is difficult to see Reis as anything other than a player for the future, even though he has the capability to play across the back line,” said BBC journalist Stone.

“Khusanov has more experience and understands European and international football. However, he is viewed more as a central defender.

“That said, as with Josko Gvardiol, no-one can be entirely sure what is in Pep’s mind for Uzbekistan’s first Premier League player.

“Gvardiol arrived as an international central defender and is now first-choice left-back, so nothing can be taken for granted with Guardiola.”

Palmeiras wanted to keep right-footed Reis on loan, after he was named in the Brazilian league’s team of the season.

But City insisted he moved immediately – and they say he will join Guardiola’s squad this season.

“I believe he will have no trouble adapting to the City system because here in the youth teams he was always exposed to playing under risk, having to be involved in the build-up play while also defending efficiently, even in one-on-one situations,” Palmeiras Under-20 coach Lucas Andrade told BBC Sport.

Khusanov would seem more likely to play soon – after a rapid rise – but is still unlikely to go straight into the team.

He has played 24 Ligue 1 games for Lens after an £84,000 move in July 2023 from Belarussian side Energetik-BGU.

“He’s a raw profile who needs ironing out,” said Luke Entwistle, editor-in-chief of Get French Football News.

“He’s an unpolished diamond, but one worth taking a punt on because the finer details and tactical understanding can be improved by Pep Guardiola. Forty million euros could look like peanuts in a decade’s time.”

Lens’ British boss Will Still said: “He’s calm, powerful, he’s fast.

“He has very, very impressive potential. Kodir is a tank. He’s impressive physically and athletically.”

How about the other players they could sign?

Manchester City are interested in signing Juventus and Italy left-back Cambiaso, 24.

City have not had a player whose main position is left-back since Benjamin Mendy, whose last game for the club was in August 2021.

The French player was cleared of serious sexual allegations in 2023 and now plays for Lorient in France.

Cambiaso has been a regular for Juventus this season – and is a senior Italy international.

He can also play at right-back, where City have a lack of options with Kyle Walker set to join AC Milan on loan.

Matheus Nunes, a midfielder, has played at right-back recently and struggled against Paris St-Germain in Wednesday’s 4-2 defeat.

“The suspicion is John Stones would be Guardiola’s first choice at right-back,” said BBC reporter Stone.

“But Stones is not fully fit. He featured for only 15 minutes against PSG, even though central defender Ruben Dias went off at half-time.

“Until Guardiola has his defenders fully fit, it seems certain Rico Lewis and Nunes will be asked to play there until a more permanent solution is available.”

Another player City are interested in is 18-year-old Sierra Leonean Bah.

Real Valladolid have accused Manchester City of encouraging him to break his contract to force through a move.

He joined Valladolid on a season-long loan from AIK Freetong in Sierra Leone last summer and the club exercised a clause to turn it into a permanent deal this month.

But Bah is still under a youth contract and has so far refused to sign a senior deal that would significantly increase his release clause.

After a busy transfer window in January, Manchester City could look drastically different on the pitch. With rumors swirling about potential signings, fans are eagerly anticipating how these new additions could impact the team.

One major area of focus for City is their defensive line, with injuries and inconsistent performances plaguing the back four. Names like Kalidou Koulibaly and Ruben Dias have been linked with the club, offering much-needed stability and experience in defense.

In midfield, City could be looking to add depth and creativity, with players like Jack Grealish and Isco reportedly on their radar. These additions could provide a spark in the middle of the park and give City more options going forward.

Up top, City may also be in the market for a new striker to provide competition for Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero. Names like Erling Haaland and Lautaro Martinez have been mentioned, offering a different dimension to City’s attack.

Overall, with the potential signings in January, Manchester City could have a stronger and more well-rounded squad heading into the second half of the season. Fans will be hoping that these new additions can help propel City to success in both domestic and European competitions.

    Over/Under

I’m betting on the under in what should be a lower-scoring rock fight.

My Pick: Under 137 or Better | Providence ML (-120 or Better)

Georgetown vs Providence College Basketball Betting Preview

I believe in Georgetown. Ed Cooley is doing great work with the Hoyas, with Thomas Sorber turning into a two-way superstar big man.

That said, I’m unsure how effective the Hoyas will be in this matchup.

Cooley’s offense relies more on secondary creation than on-ball dribble penetration, which typically doesn’t match up well with drop-coverage defenses that funnel the dribble into the middle of the floor.

Providence runs one of the deeper drops among high-major defenses, and the Friars are excellent at denying the rim (15 at-the-rim field goal attempts per game allowed, 87th percentile, per CBB Analytics).

So, I suspect it’ll be hard for Sorber and the rim-reliant Hoyas to generate efficient offense. They’ll have to rely on the ever-mercurial Jayden Epps to make plays off the bounce.

I say that with some caution. The Hoyas destroyed Creighton’s infamous KalkDrop in mid-December, dropping 81 at nearly 1.2 PPP.

But I think that was a one-off shooting anomaly, given the Hoyas shot 10-for-16 (63%) from 3 — ShotQuality’s post-game grading system projected Georgetown should’ve scored 64 points in that game, based on the “quality” of attempts.

The Hoyas scored 60 points at .90 PPP against West Virginia’s drop in early December and 68 at 1.05 in a road loss to DePaul’s drop last Friday. That sounds more like what we should expect.

It’s also worth mentioning that Georgetown has been smashing the offensive boards. But Providence is a rock-solid defensive rebounding team that should keep the Hoyas from too many second-chance points.

On the other end of the court, Providence has been relying heavily on attack-and-kick, catch-and-shoot creation, which has had varying results based on shooting luck. Given their 3-point-happy attitude, the Friars will be a high-variance team this year.

Unfortunately for them, Georgetown has been surprisingly effective in catch-and-shoot denial this year (11th-lowest catch-and-shoot 3-point rate allowed, per ShotQuality).

Providence has had a brutal time adjusting when opponents take away those opportunities. For example, Creighton is an elite catch-and-shoot denial defense, and the Friars managed just 64 points on .90 PPP in last Tuesday’s matchup.

Cooley will mix in plenty of junk zone looks, which could give Providence some over-the-top opportunities. But the Friars haven’t been a very efficient zone offense this year (.94 PPP, 43rd percentile, per Synergy), and they no longer have uber-versatile forward Bryce Hopkins to bust the zone as the high-post option.

Ultimately, I think it’ll be hard for either offense to work against the opposing defense, so I’m banking on a lower-scoring rock fight.

The pace should be eerily slow.

While Georgetown will sometimes try to run the open court, Providence is among the nation’s best transition-denial defenses (six fast-break points per game allowed, 94th percentile, per Synergy).

Meanwhile, the Friars refuse to force turnovers or run the open court, as they want to play almost exclusively sub-65-possession games in the half-court.

Both head-to-head matchups last season between these two stayed under the closing total, so I’m banking on more of the same.

Additionally, while I prefer the under, I can’t help but make a smaller play on Providence’s moneyline.

The situational spot screams Friars. They’re due for a bounce-back win while returning home after back-to-back road losses to Creighton and Villanova, the latter coming by a single possession.

Meanwhile, the Hoyas are due for a letdown loss on the second leg of a two-game road trip after a miracle 13-point second-half comeback road victory over Villanova.

The Friars consistently have a strong home-court advantage, and Amica Mutual Pavilion should be a madhouse in Cooley’s return.

At the same time, Georgetown’s offense seems to struggle on the road, given that Hoya road games are 6-0 to the under this season. That should help get both Providence ML and the under home.

Georgetown vs Providence Predictions, Picks, Odds for Saturday, January 25

Two Big East rivals will face off on Saturday, January 25 as the Georgetown Hoyas take on the Providence Friars. Both teams are looking to improve their conference standings with a crucial win in this matchup.

Georgetown comes into this game with a 13-7 overall record and a 3-4 record in conference play. The Hoyas are led by star guard Mac McClung, who is averaging 15.3 points per game. Georgetown has shown flashes of brilliance this season, but inconsistency has been their downfall.

Providence, on the other hand, has a 11-10 overall record and a 4-4 record in conference play. The Friars are led by Alpha Diallo, who is averaging 14.2 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. Providence has been up and down this season, but they have shown the ability to compete with some of the top teams in the conference.

In terms of odds, Georgetown is currently a slight favorite with a spread of -1.5 points. The over/under for the game is set at 143.5 points.

Prediction: This game has all the makings of a close and competitive matchup. Both teams will be looking to make a statement and improve their conference standings. Ultimately, I believe Georgetown will come out on top in a hard-fought battle. Look for Mac McClung to have a big game and lead the Hoyas to victory.

    Pick: Georgetown -1.5

    Odds: Over 143.5 points

Make sure to tune in to this exciting Big East showdown on Saturday, January 25 to see which team comes out on top!

  • NYT ‘Strands’ Hints, Spangram And Answers For Saturday, January 25

Looking for Friday’s Strands hints, spangram and answers? You can find them here:

ForbesNYT Strands Hints And Answers For Friday, January 24

I am not exaggerating when I say that this has one of the wildest words I have ever seen in a puzzle here, and I would be shocked if even 1% of players got it. Which maybe why you are here.

    How To Play Strands

The New York Times’ Strands puzzle is a play on the classic word search. It’s in beta for now, which means it’ll only stick around if enough people play it every day.

There’s a new game of Strands to play every day. The game will present you with a six by eight grid of letters. The aim is to find a group of words that have something in common, and you’ll get a clue as to what that theme is. When you find a theme word, it will remain highlighted in blue.

You’ll also need to find a special word called a spangram. This tells you what the words have in common. The spangram links two opposite sides of the board. While the theme words will not be a proper name, the spangram can be a proper name. When you find the spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow.

Be warned: You’ll need to be on your toes.

“Some themes are fill-in-the-blank phrases. They may also be steps in a process, items that all belong to the same category, synonyms or homophones,” The New York Times notes. “Just as she varies the difficulty of Wordle puzzles within a week, [Wordle and Strands editor Tracy] Bennett plans to throw Strands solvers curveballs every once in a while.”

    What Is Today’s Strands Hint?

We will start with the official NYT hint and then move on to one of my own, as I think you’ll need the help this week especially. The official hint is:

    Seeing double

    Mine is:

    Two in a row

Hard to think of a second one this time, admittedly.

    What Are Today’s Strands Answers?

We will begin with the spangram in the answer portion here, where spoilers follow. Then I will post all the answers below that. Here is the spangram:

    LETTERS

    And where you find it:

    And the answers:

    • COMMITTEE
    • COFFEE
    • BALLOON
    • SUCCEED
    • WHIPPOORWILL

What the hell is a WHIPPOORWILL? Even spell check has no idea here. I thought this was Whirlpool but you can’t make that work, and you need double double letters for this puzzle here. So, after looking it up, of course, a Whippoorwill is a bird. A bird I have never heard of in my life despite living in North America where it resides. Native Americans said that hearing its cry was a death omen, and I certainly wanted to die after trying this many combinations of letters. Wow.
