Trump signs slew of executive orders

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday (January 20, 2025) issued a flurry of executive orders and directives as he sought to put his stamp on his new administration on matters ranging from energy to criminal pardons and immigration. Mr. Trump also pardoned about 1,500 people who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, in a sweeping gesture of support to the people who assaulted police as they tried to prevent lawmakers from certifying his 2020 election defeat.

Saif Ali Khan discharged from hospital after five days

After being hospitalised for five days, actor Saif Ali Khan was discharged from Lilavati Hospital on Tuesday (January 21, 2025) following the knife attack at his Bandra residence in Mumbai on January 16. The accused, Shahzad, stabbed him and caused him six injuries, harming his thoracic spine. Doctors performed surgery to remove 2.5 mm knife piece.

BJP releases second manifesto ahead of Delhi Assembly polls

In the second part of the BJP’s Sankalp Patra for the Delhi Legislative Assembly polls, MP Anurag Thakur announced that the party will bring free education for needy students from KG to PG in government institutions and ₹15000 for needy aspirants preparing for competitive exams. The party has also promised ₹1000 per month under the Dr. BR Ambedkar Scheme for scheduled caste students pursuing professional and technical courses.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday (January 21, 2025) again expressed dismay over the Sealdah Court order which awarded life imprisonment till death to Sanjay Roy the sole convict in the rape and murder of a doctor at a State-run hospital.

14 Maoists killed in encounter at Odisha-Chhattisgarh border

At least fourteen Maoists have been killed along the Chhattisgarh-Odisha border in an anti-Maoist operation conducted in Gariaband district, the police said on Tuesday (January 21, 2025). The police had on Monday (January 20, 2025) said the number of fatalities in the operation was two but updated the figures based on the bodies recovered after the operation.

Taliban announce the release of two Americans held in Afghanistan in a prisoner exchange

Afghanistan’s Taliban government announced on Tuesday (January 21, 2025) the release of two Americans in a prisoner exchange. The Taliban’s Foreign Ministry in Kabul did not name the two U.S. citizens but said they were exchanged for Khan Muhammad, who was arrested in the eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar two decades ago and has been serving a life sentence in a California prison.

At least 66 dead, 51 injured in hotel fire at a ski resort in northwestern Turkiye

A fire at a 12-storey hotel at a popular ski resort in northwestern Turkey on Tuesday (January 21, 2025) killed at least 66 people, Turkey’s Interior Minister said. Ali Yerlikaya said at least 51 other people were injured in the disaster that struck the Grand Kartal hotel in the resort of Kartalkaya, in Bolu province’s Koroglu mountains, some 300 km (185 miles) east of Istanbul. The fire occurred during the school’s semester break when hotels in the region are packed.

‘Connections’ January 22: Answers and Hints for Puzzle #591

Connections quickly became an online sensation after it was released by The New York Times in June 2023—and it remains as popular as ever.

The word puzzle is now the news outlet’s second-most played game after Wordle. Connections challenges players to uncover threads connecting a series of words.

Instructions on how to play the game are below. Clues and the answers for today’s puzzle are toward the end of the article.

How to Play ‘Connections’

Connections tasks players with grouping 16 words into four categories based on association. For example, a recent game linked the words “Barb,” “Crack,” “Dig,” and “Slight” under the category “Putdown.”

Each of the four categories is labeled with a color, which also signifies the difficulty level. Yellow is the easiest category, followed by green, blue and purple. The puzzles are rarely straightforward, using homophones and wordplay, among other techniques, to keep players challenged.

The familiarity of the words used and how often they pop up in modern life are also difficulty factors, although less-common words aren’t only used in the harder categories. “Item overlap,” where one word can be linked to multiple categories, is another way Connections tests players.

If stuck, players can hit the shuffle button, which will mix up where the words appear on the screen.

Wyna Liu, a crossword editor at The New York Times who developed Connections, told Newsweek about her recommended tips for playing the game.

“My best piece of advice is to wait as long as you can before guessing,” she said.

“You may see the board and have completely identified the category, seeing five words that could belong in that category,” she continued. “Don’t try to guess the four words in that category because, even though you know what the fifth member is, you won’t know which of the four it might not be,” which would ultimately waste a turn.

“Don’t do what I do, which is ‘rage solve,'” Liu said.

Connections is the one of the most popular New York Times word games that’s captured the public’s attention. The game is all about finding the “common threads between words.” And just like Wordle, Connections resets after midnight and each new set of words gets trickier and trickier—so we’ve served up some hints and tips to get you over the hurdle.

If you just want to be told today’s puzzle, you can jump to the end of this article for today’s Connections solution. But if you’d rather solve it yourself, keep reading for some clues, tips, and strategies to assist you.

What is Connections?

The NYT‘s latest daily word game has become a social media hit. The Times credits associate puzzle editor Wyna Liu with helping to create the new word game and bringing it to the publications’ Games section. Connections can be played on both web browsers and mobile devices and require players to group four words that share something in common.

Each puzzle features 16 words and each grouping of words is split into four categories. These sets could comprise of anything from book titles, software, country names, etc. Even though multiple words will seem like they fit together, there’s only one correct answer.


Mashable Games

If a player gets all four words in a set correct, those words are removed from the board. Guess wrong and it counts as a mistake—players get up to four mistakes until the game ends.

Players can also rearrange and shuffle the board to make spotting connections easier. Additionally, each group is color-coded with yellow being the easiest, followed by green, blue, and purple. Like Wordle, you can share the results with your friends on social media.

Hey, everyone! I hope you’re taking care of yourselves out there.

For various reasons, I’m trying to reduce the amount of time I spend on social media. Keeping it largely at bay has been quite helpful this week in particular.

I got rid of most of those apps on my phone recently, retaining Instagram only to keep up with my friends’ stories. I still have a few messaging apps, but I only look at Twitter these days at my desk for newsgathering. I still enjoy Bluesky and Reddit, but I’m trying to use those only in small doses. These decisions have been for the better, I think.

Before we get going, I’ve started a discussion group for Connections and this column on Discord. You can chat about each game (and other topics) with me and other folks. I’m always interested to find out how other people approach the game, so join us! It’s fun.

It’s also the best way to give me any feedback about the column, especially on the rare(!) occasions that I mess something up.

Today’s NYT Connections hints and answers for Thursday, January 23, are coming right up.

How To Play Connections

Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. You get a new puzzle at midnight every day. You can play on the NYT website or Games app.

You’re presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by figuring out the links between them. The groups could be things like items you can click, names for research study participants or words preceded by a body part.

There’s only one solution for each puzzle, and you’ll need to be careful when it comes to words that might fit into more than one category. You can shuffle the words to perhaps help you see links between them.

Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is usually the most difficult one. The purple group often involves wordplay.

Select four words you think go together and press Submit. If you make a guess and you’re incorrect, you’ll lose a life. If you’re close to having a correct group, you might see a message telling you that you’re one word away from getting it right, but you’ll still need to figure out which one to swap.

If you make four mistakes, it’s game over. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen with the help of some hints, and, if you’re really struggling, today’s Connections answers. As with Wordle and other similar games, it’s easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chats.

Yet another perfect game today, though it was a bit of a lucky one. That streak is up to eight, and my overall winning run has reached 11 games. Here’s how I fared:

It took me just a few seconds to realize that WHIP, FEDORA and SATCHEL were all Indiana Jones-related. I figured BOMBER would make sense with those, since one of the big set pieces in Raiders of the Lost Ark is a fight that takes place in and around a bomber. Not exactly the correct thought process, but at least I had the blues sorted.

From there, I was able to deduce the rest of the groups easily enough. Well, at least I figured out the greens and yellows were. That left the purples, and I submitted those next.

I had no clue here, even if it’s kind of fun to have a slightly more difficult purple group than the ones we’ve had lately. I was getting a little too comfortable, if we’re being honest. Those presidents are Ronald Reagan (PAGAN), Jimmy Carter (SMARTER), Richard Nixon (VIXEN) and Joe Biden (WIDEN).

The greens were next, and then the yellows wrapped up yet another perfect game.

P.S. I missed a trick by not using this as my recommendation when we had a group of fictional doctors earlier this week. But I wasn’t about to make that mistake again with an Indiana Jones group in the mix today.

Aqua had more songs than just “Barbie Girl.” In fact, that was just one of three U.K. number one singles the group had. Here’s another one, an infectious Eurodance track called “Doctor Jones:”

Where did Wordle come from?

Originally created by engineer Josh Wardle as a gift for his partner, Wordle rapidly spread to become an international phenomenon, with thousands of people around the globe playing every day. Alternate Wordle versions created by fans also sprang up, including battle royale Squabble, music identification game Heardle, and variations like Dordle and Quordle that make you guess multiple words at once. 

Wordle eventually became so popular that it was purchased by the New York Times, and TikTok creators even livestream themselves playing.

Is Wordle getting harder?

This was a bit of a trick question. There are actually three different answers to this particular riddle: 713, 535 and 357. Various readers messaged me with different answers, but you all got it right! Bravo!

A tricky Wordle today! GRAIN wasn’t an ideal opener, leaving me with just one yellow box and 271 remaining solutions. ROUTE slashed that number to 18 and gave me two more yellow boxes. Unfortunately, FEMUR ended up being a lousy third guess, only cutting 8 of those words away, though at least I got the ‘R’ into green. SUPER cut away the remaining possible solutions, leaving me with just one: UPPER for the win!

  • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
  • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.

We have a big slate on tap Wednesday night, and although the injury report is relatively light and therefore doesn’t make a big ripple in the player pool, there are some particularly big names whose status will bear monitoring.

The betting landscape for Wednesday’s slate is a bit of a study in extremes, as there are four double-digit favorites, including the Thunder with a massive 17-point projected advantage over the Jazz. However, that still leaves us with five games that could turn out to be very competitive, with the Pistons-Hawks and Cavaliers-Rockets matchups especially standing out since they also have large projected totals.

On that front, the picture is pretty optimistic, considering five games have totals north of 227 points, and only two of those are attached to games that have expansive spreads.

James Harden, LAC (groin): QUESTIONABLE

If Harden can’t play, Norman Powell will be the likeliest biggest beneficiary in terms of increased usage if he can play through his questionable tag, while Kevin Porter is likely to draw a start at point guard.

Jalen Williams, NOP (hip): QUESTIONABLE 

If Williams doesn’t play, Isaiah Joe could remain on the first unit and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will likely benefit the most from a usage standpoint.

Jalen Johnson, ATL (shoulder): QUESTIONABLE

If Johnson sits out, any of David Roddy, De’Andre Hunter or Vit Krejci could draw the start at power forward.

Elite Players

We have five players with five-figure salaries on Wednesday’s slate – Shai Gilgeous-Alexander ($11,600), Domantas Sabonis ($10,500), Jayson Tatum ($10,300), LaMelo Ball ($10,200) and Cade Cunningham ($10,000).

SGA could take the floor without Jalen Williams once again and has scored over 54 FD points in three straight, including 58.6 against the Nets on Monday without Williams available. However, OKC is a massive 17-point favorite, which implies Gilgeous-Alexander could see less than a full workload.

Sabonis has at least 50 FD points in four of the last six games and is facing a Warriors team he put up 48.1 FD points against across only 29 minutes on Jan. 5.

Tatum has a pair of tallies of over 50 FD points in his last five games alone, and he’ll face a Clippers team that could potentially be without James Harden and Norman Powell in addition to Ivica Zubac.

Ball has scored between 43.7 and 65.5 FD points in five consecutive games and draws a favorable matchup against the Grizzlies.

Cunningham has flashed a floor of 45 FD points in five of his last six games and will be a central figure in what could be one of the most DFS-friendly game environments of the night against the Hawks.

Expected Chalk

Other likely chalk plays include:

Kevin Durant, PHO ($9,600)

Durant scored 64.9 FD points two games ago and has a very favorable matchup against the Nets, which should keep him very popular. 

Trae Young, ATL ($9,400)

Young will be in what should be a highly favorable game environment for DFS production and has exceeded 56 FD points in three of his last five games, factors that should lock in a high roster rate at his salary.

Alperen Sengun, HOU ($9,200)

Sengun saw a dip to 27.1 FD points in his most recent game after six straight games with more than 40 FD points, but he should remain very popular in what projects to be a highly competitive game against the Cavaliers.

Anthony Edwards, MIN ($9,200)

Edwards has scored between 41.6 and 63.7 FD points in four of the last five games and has at least 32 actual points in three of those contests.

Donovan Mitchell, CLE ($8,900)

Mitchell has scored 49.5 to 56.1 FD points in three of the last four games and will be a key figure in what could be one of the most competitive games of the night.

Key Values  

Jalen Duren, DET at ATL ($6,300)

Duren is coming off having scored a season-high 52.3 FD points against the Rockets on Monday, a game that featured his third straight double-double and four steals. The talented big man is enjoying a stellar January overall, averaging 11.9 points, 11.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.3 blocks and 33.8 FD points across 11 games despite playing a modest 25.9 minutes per contest. The Pistons-Hawks game has a narrow spread and high projected total as well, and Atlanta checks in ranked No. 21 in offensive efficiency rating allowed to centers (33.8) while also allowing 56.3 FD points per contest to the position. The Hawks are also giving up the fifth-most points in the paint per game in the last three (53.3), an area of the floor where 82.5 percent of Duren’s scoring originates from.

Naz Reid, MIN at DAL ($5,900)

Reid has had some ups and downs this season, but he enters Wednesday on an extended stretch of impressive production that dates back to New Year’s Eve. The veteran big man has averaged 31.6 FD points in his last 12 games, getting to that figure via 17.4 points (on 52.8 percent shooting, including 52.9 percent from distance), 6.1 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.0 blocks across 27.3 minutes per contest. Reid just scored a season-high 29 points against the Grizzlies on Monday, and he’s eclipsed 30 FD points in six of his last seven games. He has a tally of 25.8 FD points across 26 minutes versus the Mavs this season, and Dallas ranks No. 20 in offensive efficiency rating allowed to centers (33.7) while allowing 56 FD points per game to the position.

Jaylin Williams, OKC vs. UTA ($5,400)

Williams will continue filling in for Isaiah Hartenstein (calf) on Wednesday, and the 2022 second-round pick will check in having scored 31.5 and 36.1 FD points in his last two games, with both those being starts. Williams has eclipsed 20 FD points in five games overall this season (three times off the bench), and his three efforts of greater than 31 FD points have all come within the last 10 days. The Jazz make for a great target as well, considering Utah is allowing a Western Conference-high 36.5 offensive efficiency rating and 60.2 FD points per game to centers.
