NYT ‘Strands’ Hints, Spangram And Answers For Friday, January 31
Strands
Looking for Thursday’s Strands hints, spangram and answers? You can find them here:
Today’s puzzle is something applicable to me as a relatively new father, but it may be harder for you depending on your situation.
How To Play Strands
The New York Times’ Strands puzzle is a play on the classic word search. It’s in beta for now, which means it’ll only stick around if enough people play it every day.
There’s a new game of Strands to play every day. The game will present you with a six by eight grid of letters. The aim is to find a group of words that have something in common, and you’ll get a clue as to what that theme is. When you find a theme word, it will remain highlighted in blue.
You’ll also need to find a special word called a spangram. This tells you what the words have in common. The spangram links two opposite sides of the board. While the theme words will not be a proper name, the spangram can be a proper name. When you find the spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow.
Every letter is used once in one of the theme words and spangram. You can connect letters vertically, horizontally and diagonally, and it’s possible to switch directions in the middle of a word. If you’re playing on a touchscreen, double tap the last letter to submit your guess.
If you find three valid words of at least four letters that are not part of the theme, you’ll unlock the Hint button. Clicking this will highlight the letters that make up one of the theme words.
Be warned: You’ll need to be on your toes. Sometimes you’ll need to fill the missing word(s) in a phrase. On other days, the game may revolve around synonyms or homophones. The difficulty will vary from day to day, and the puzzle creators will try to surprise you sometimes.
What Is Today’s Strands Hint?
The NYT hint is probably enough to get you started today, but if not, I will give you one of my own as well. The official hint is:

And my hint is:
Early speech
What Are Today’s Strands Answers?
First we will reveal the spangram as spoileres follow below, and then the rest of the answers after that.

And here is where you find that on the board:
Strands
And the answer list:
- YUCKY
- MAMA
- MINE
- BYEBYE

Strands
Eight words plus the spangram is about as much as you can even fit in a puzzle, which can happen when almost all of them are 4-6 letters. As for my son, he did say most of these, maybe not bottle, though he used sign language for some things like more. Yucky was more of a face than anything else. Now he’s chattering away. Time goes by so fast.

The NYT hint is long today but I will do a shorter one after that. That hint is:
Stopping by woods on a snowy evening
And my hint is:
Poetry in motion
What Are Today’s Strands Answers?
The spangram will be first but I am going to mix things up after that is posted:
FROSTPOEM
And here is where you find that on the board:
Strands
Before I do the full answer list, I’m going to do something unique and post the full text of the poem to see if you can pull the answers out from that alone:
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake. The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep. And the answer list:
- FROZEN
- DARK
- DEEP
- BELLS
- SHAKE
- SLEEP
- LOVELY
- LAKE
Strands
Did you get it with the poem clue? I thought that might be a little more fun than just a pure answer list. Let me know if you liked that or not and I’ll keep it in mind for the future.

Teichmann vs. Wang Prediction at the Singapore Open – Friday, January 31In what promises to be an exciting match-up at the Singapore Open, Jil Teichmann will face off against Qiang Wang on Friday, January 31. Both players have shown impressive form leading up to this match, making it a difficult one to predict.
Teichmann, the Swiss player, has had a strong start to the season, reaching the quarterfinals of the Adelaide International earlier this month. Her aggressive playing style and powerful groundstrokes make her a formidable opponent on any surface.
Wang, on the other hand, is a seasoned player with a wealth of experience on the WTA tour. The Chinese player has had some notable wins over top-ranked players in the past and is known for her consistency and tenacity on the court.
While both players have their strengths, Teichmann may have a slight edge in this match-up. Her recent form and aggressive playing style could prove to be too much for Wang to handle. However, Wang’s experience and ability to stay calm under pressure could also make her a tough opponent for Teichmann.
In the end, it is likely to be a close and thrilling match between these two talented players. The outcome could go either way, but I predict that Teichmann will come out on top in a hard-fought battle.
Be sure to tune in to the Singapore Open on Friday, January 31, to catch all the action and see who will emerge victorious in this exciting match between Teichmann and Wang.

UC San Diego vs Hawaii College Basketball Betting Preview
UC San Diego has been one of the best stories in college basketball that nobody knows about.
The Tritons are playing like a top-50 team and are not totally dead for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament (just mostly dead, “Princess Bride” style). A win tonight would help UCSD stay in the hunt for a Big West title and make the rematch with UC Irvine a dramatic affair.
Hawaii has had a middling season and will hope to claw its way back to .500 in conference play with an upset on the Island. The Bows just haven’t seemed to find consistency this season, using six different starting lineups and largely struggling on the offensive end.
UCSD has blowout potential every night thanks to its incendiary offense, the No. 1 attack in the Big West. The Tritons don’t turn it over, they score effectively inside, and they don’t miss from the charity stripe.
Having the best player in the league certainly helps — Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones has been an absolute monster this season, averaging 30 points per game over his last three contests. The Kiwi does everything on the floor for the Tritons and is the toughest assignment in the conference.
His running mate, Tyler McGhie, is also a stud and one of the deadliest shooters in the Big West.
UCSD takes good shots on offense, ranking 348th in FGA rate in the mid-range, per CBB Analytics, while hoisting a healthy diet of 3s and also getting efficient looks in the paint.
Hawaii sells out on the arc, taking away the 3 at the fourth-highest rate in the nation (No. 1 in the Big West), so UCSD will need to flex its style a bit to adapt to what the Rainbow Warrior defense is giving it.
That shouldn’t be an issue for the versatile Tait-Jones and savvy McGhie.
Normally, the defensive end has been Hawaii’s strong suit under head coach Eran Ganot, but an inability to put pressure on opponents this season has made its defense less potent than usual.
The Bows force a league-low turnover rate on this end, so while they may limit UCSD’s 3-point attempts, they won’t cause the Tritons to cough up the rock.
On the offensive end, Hawaii’s offense can stagnate. Ranked just ninth in the Big West in adjusted offensive efficiency, the Bows are a poor shooting team that relies heavily on pounding the paint, eating the glass and getting to the free-throw line.
Their style is exactly what UCSD doesn’t allow. Hawaii ranks 16th nationally in FGA rate at the rim and 18th in FGA rate on paint 2s, per CBB Analytics.
UCSD plays a ton of zone, packs the paint and ranks 19th in FGA rate allowed at the rim and 37th in FGA rate allowed on paint 2s. Making Hawaii shoot 3s sure is a good way to beat it.
While the Bows should have the glass edge, one shouldn’t short-sell UCSD’s perimeter defense and its ability to force turnovers. This Tritons team has a ton of perimeter, and that length has led to them ranking second in the Big West in turnover rate. Scoring will come at a premium for Hawaii.
The Bows’ best hope is slowing this game to a crawl. Hawaii plays at a slow tempo and prefers battling in half-court affairs.
UCSD’s zone defense slows opponents down anyway, so the possession count could be extremely low in this game, pointing toward an under bet.
Finally, it’s worth noting Hawaii’s homecourt advantage, or rather surprising lack thereof.
Contrary to popular belief, the Bows rank just 242nd in KenPom’s home-court advantage rankings and are just 2-2 on their floor in league play. Any premium placed on home-court in the line is a mistake.
UCSD should take care of business tonight on the island. While this could be a low-scoring game, the Tritons are far better equipped to put the ball in the basket. A total score below 120 could still result in a double-digit Triton victory.

ESPN has released the official trailer and key art for “The Buddy Way” – a feature-length documentary on the historic life and career of Coach Eugene F. “Buddy” Teevens III ’79. Directed by Rory Karpf, executive produced by Peyton Manning, and produced by Omaha Productions, the documentary will premiere on January 29 at 5pm ET on ESPN2 and will be available to stream on ESPN+ following its linear debut.
“The Buddy Way” explores Teevens’ inspiring journey, starting from his early years in Pembroke, MA, and spanning his four-decade-long coaching career. The documentary highlights his championship successes as a multi-sport athlete, his pivotal role at the Manning Passing Academy, and the groundbreaking innovations he made on and off the field that still make him a hero to so many.
“We are honored to share Buddy’s story and preserve his legacy,” said Executive Producer Peyton Manning. “Buddy’s motto as a coach and leader was ‘adjust and improvise.’ But it was more than a motto; Buddy was a true football innovator. He hired female coaches in the college ranks before anybody else, and he emphasized smarter and safer tackling long before the practice was adopted across the sport. Buddy was a terrific coach, but the legacy Buddy leaves behind extends well beyond his success on the field.”
“Buddy Teevens lived a full life,” said Executive Producer Murry Bowden. “He had a major impact on the game of football and the game of life. Documenting this will provide future generations insight into an extraordinary husband, father, coach and visionary. (My wife) Polly and I are delighted to have provided the resources to capture his life on film. We hope this documentary provides inspiration to all who dream big and work hard to leave this earth a better place for future generations.”
“Simply put, Buddy was an extraordinary teacher of football and life,” said Mike Harrity, Haldeman Family Director of Athletics and Recreation said. “His classroom was the football field and the ripple effect of his positive impact will be felt for generations to come. Thank you to Polly and Murry Bowden ’71, director Rory Karpf, Peyton Manning, Omaha Productions and so many more for sharing Buddy’s inspiring life journey with the world through this powerful film.”
Through a blend of never-before-seen footage and exclusive interviews with Teevens’ family and football legends, the documentary captures the profound influence he had on the sport. It also features powerful moments from two significant 2024 events: a celebration of life held at Dartmouth in May and the October renaming of the stadium in honor of his lasting legacy with Dartmouth’s football program. These heartfelt scenes provide a deeply personal and compelling portrait of Teevens—both as a man and a coach—emphasizing his resilience, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to lifting those around him.
