Jennifer Love Hewitt on her experience with ageism in Hollywood

Jennifer Love Hewitt is the self-love whisperer.

The actress, 45, recently got candid on how ageism has played a part in her decadeslong career in Hollywood.

“I feel like fans pick this age that they love that they think represents you, and you’re never supposed to grow beyond that,” Hewitt told Fox New Digital in an interview published on Thursday. “For me, it was like me and my 20s. People seem to have a really hard time accepting that I don’t look that way anymore.”

The “Time of Your Life” alum started acting at a young age on “Kids Incorporated” before landing her first big break at 16 years old as Sarah Reeves on Fox’s “Party of Five.”

Two years later, she starred in the iconic 1997 slasher “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and its sequel. Along with several popular television shows, including “Ghost Whisperer” and “The Client List,” Hewitt has recorded four studio albums.

The “Heartbreakers” vet — who shares kids Autumn, 11, Atticus, 9, and Aidan, 3, with husband Brian Hallisay — added that she doesn’t want her children to see those types of negative comments.

“I have a daughter, I’m sensitive to it because I don’t want my kids to read those things and feel that way … or worry about me being hurt by it … it’s hard to do that sometimes,” Hewitt explained.

The singer noted, “It’s hard because I think as humans, we want to evolve … we want to have lines on our faces, and you know, our boobs be lower from breast-feeding our children, or you know, our butt’s bigger.”

“Whatever it is, you just want to have the freedom to be whoever you are at that age. And it’s hurtful sometimes when people reject you as you are verbally on Instagram or the internet because they’re having a hard time adjusting to it.”

Although the “Holiday Junkie” star has seen the public’s response to her getting older, Hewitt still loves where she is today.

“Age is age,” she continued. “I think women really come into this … acceptance of themselves and comfortability in their 40s that is beautiful. I love being in my 40s. I really do.”

Last year, Hewitt clapped back at claims she was “unrecognizable” after sharing a photo with a filter and no makeup on Instagram. Many commented that she looked vastly different

“The picture ended up somewhere. And a bunch of people were like, ‘Jennifer Love Hewitt is unrecognizable,’” she recalled on the “Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum” podcast at the time.

“‘She’s unrecognizable and so she’s gone to filters because she doesn’t want us to know how bad she actually looks now in her 40s.’ And I was like, ‘This is crazy.’ Right?”

Acknowledging her physique back in the day, Hewitt quipped, “She was a looker,” but added that “at 23, 24, 25, I didn’t feel self-confident.”

“I felt watched. I felt like I had to be everything for everybody all the time,” she elaborated. “I was called sexy before I ever knew what being sexy was. I was 17 years old on the cover of Maxim, and I had no idea why.”

Hewitt even recounted an experience during filming the 2001 film “Heartbreakers” where she was told to “be sexier” on the rom-com set.

“I know that I’m supposed to be this thing for people, but I don’t know what that means,” she told a producer at the time.

Touching on the public’s perception, Hewitt said, “It’s weird for me when people are like, ‘That’s the girl that we wanted you to be.’”

“That girl was so insecure and so confused and trying her best. But this girl — who may not look [that] way — I like who I am. I feel good. I’m fine.”

“I’m a mother of a girl, and it’s dangerous what we put on people,” Hewitt stated. “It’s dangerous to say to women, ‘You can’t look like you’re not 22 to me anymore.’”

Ageism is a prevalent issue in Hollywood, with many actors and actresses facing discrimination as they get older. Jennifer Love Hewitt, known for her roles in popular TV shows like “Party of Five” and “Ghost Whisperer,” has also experienced ageism in the industry.

In a recent interview, Hewitt opened up about her own encounters with ageism and how it has affected her career. She shared that as she has gotten older, she has noticed a decrease in the number of roles being offered to her. Hewitt expressed frustration at the lack of opportunities for women in Hollywood once they reach a certain age, feeling like she is being pushed out of the spotlight.

Despite the challenges she has faced, Hewitt remains hopeful and determined to continue pursuing her passion for acting. She believes that there is a shift happening in Hollywood, with more emphasis being placed on diversity and inclusivity in casting. Hewitt hopes that this change will lead to more opportunities for actresses of all ages to showcase their talent and skills.

Jennifer Love Hewitt’s honesty about her experience with ageism in Hollywood sheds light on an important issue within the industry. It serves as a reminder that age should not dictate an actor’s worth or ability to succeed in their career. Hopefully, her voice will help bring about positive change and create a more equitable and inclusive environment for all actors in Hollywood.

Jennifer Love Hewitt is fighting back against ageism in Hollywood.

While Hewitt has been in the spotlight for decades, she pushed back at critics who scrutinized her looks as she grew up in the industry.

“Age is age,” she told Fox News Digital. “I think women really come into this… acceptance of themselves and comfortability in their 40s that is beautiful.”

“The times that it’s hard for me though… I feel like fans pick… this age that they love that they think represents you, and you’re never supposed to grow beyond that,” she explained as she referenced a quote from Taylor Swift.

For Hewitt, she found that fans mostly idolized the way she was in her 20s. Hewitt is known for her role in the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” franchise, in which she starred alongside Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr., as well as “Heartbreakers” alongside Sigourney Weaver and the cult classic “Can’t Hardly Wait.”

Now, the Hollywood actress’s perspective of how fans view her has changed since she became a mother of three.

“I have a daughter, I’m sensitive to it because I don’t want my kids to read those things and feel that way… or worry about me being hurt by it… it’s hard to do that sometimes,” she said.

Hewitt’s daughters seem to be following in their parents’ acting footsteps. They were also involved in the Christmas movie, “The Holiday Junkie.

Hewitt told Fox News Digital she’d tell her younger self, “Look, it’s going to work out. You’re going to start getting old, and they’re still going to let you do things.” (Jerod Harris/WireImage)

“Or that I was going to be dorky… whatever it was. I was just always worried… I definitely enjoyed it and was present… had a good time and all those things. But I wasted a lot of time worrying. And I think I would just say to her, like, ‘Look, it’s going to work out. You’re going to start getting old, and they’re still going to let you do things… it’s OK. You’re fine.’”

    Jennifer’s advice for Selena

According to In Touch, Jennifer will be at the front at the wedding celebrations along with other best friends including Taylor Swift, Meryl Streep, Cara Delevingne, and Ariana Grande.

“Jennifer treats Selena like a younger sister. She’s very excited for her and has already sent flowers and a card offering to help out however she can. She’s planned a couple of weddings herself, so she knows a whole lot about the process and has a lot of advice to share,” said a source.

The source added, “No doubt Selena will be happy to have her guidance. It’s hard enough planning a wedding, but a celebrity one is on a different level so any help she can get will be appreciated.”

Jennifer, 55, and Selena, share the same manager. They have been close friends since the two met in a bathroom at a Vanity Fair event.

Both Selena, 32, and her beau Benny, 36, have been in the music and entertainment industry for years. Talking about the wedding, the source shared that there will be an “incredible number of celebrity guests”.

On her relationship, Selena told Time, “It just happens when you least expect it. I just cherish every moment with him. I don’t know what the future holds, but I do know that he’s not going anywhere any time soon.”

Benny reciprocated her feelings, telling Howard Stern in May, “I look at her … I’m always just like, I don’t know a world where it could be better than this … People always said this to me, when you know you meet your best friend, she truly is my best friend.”

    Selena gets engaged

Last month, Selena debuted the news of her engagement on Instagram with a picture of her diamond ring. A picture saw her get a kiss on the cheeks from Benny. Selena wrote in the caption, “Forever begins now..” Benny commented, “Hey wait… that’s my wife.”

Selena first confirmed her relationship with Benny in December last year. The two then attended various public events, including the Golden Globes and Primetime Emmys, and were spotted at a basketball game between the New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers in April. A report also claimed that Selena Gomez may sit down with her fiance Benny Blanco to hash out a prenup agreement after acquiring billionaire status like her BFF Taylor Swift.

According to recent reports, Jennifer Aniston has offered to lend a helping hand to Selena Gomez in planning her upcoming wedding. The former Friends star is said to be a close friend of Gomez and wants to make sure her special day is everything she dreams of.

Aniston, who has been through her fair share of high-profile weddings, reportedly reached out to Gomez after hearing about her engagement to boyfriend Chris Evans. The actress is known for her impeccable taste and attention to detail, making her the perfect person to offer guidance in the wedding planning process.

Sources close to the two stars have revealed that Aniston has already started brainstorming ideas with Gomez and offering her advice on everything from venue selection to dress shopping. The pair have been spotted spending time together in recent weeks, fueling speculation that Aniston is taking an active role in helping Gomez plan her big day.

Fans of both actresses are thrilled to hear about their friendship and are eagerly awaiting updates on the wedding planning process. With Jennifer Aniston by her side, it seems like Selena Gomez’s wedding will be nothing short of spectacular.

  • “He struggled”— When Jennifer Aniston cried about the idea of losing Matthew Perry years before his death

“He struggled”— When Jennifer Aniston cried about the idea of losing Matthew Perry years before his death

Jennifer Aniston is undoubtedly one of the most recognized actresses in the world, thanks to her role as Rachel Green on the iconic sitcom Friends from 1994 to 2004. The role earned her several awards, including Primetime Emmy, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild awards.

Friends has left an indelible mark on popular culture, and its cast members, including Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer, became household names due to its popularity. Thus, when Perry was found dead at his LA residence on Saturday, October 28, 2023, fans of the show and the actor worldwide were left heartbroken.

Matthew Perry had been struggling with addiction for long and was always open about his fight against the same. He had help from his Friends co-stars in dealing with the battle against addiction.

In a 2004 interview given to Diane Sawyer of ABC, Jennifer Aniston broke down while talking about Perry and his struggle with addiction. She recounted:

“He struggled. We didn’t know. We weren’t equipped to deal with it.”

The Bruce Almighty star got emotional when discussing the suffering Perry had to undergo due to his addiction. The actress could understand that Perry was deeply struggling with the condition and was afraid of “the idea of even losing him.”

Jennifer Aniston was worried about Perry’s addiction

Around twenty years before Matthew Perry’s demise, Jennifer Aniston expressed her feelings about the actor and his ongoing battle against addiction in an interview given to ABC in 2004. While commenting on each of her co-stars on Friends, she broke down into tears immediately as Perry’s name came up.

Aniston stated that the others tried their best to support Perry in his journey toward recovery. However, she was concerned that they were not ‘equipped’ to deal with it. She tearfully said:

“Nobody had ever dealt with that. And the idea of even losing him … he’s having a road. But he’s alright.”

Jennifer Aniston’s remarks are interspersed with voiceovers by Diane Sawyer in which the latter explains the difficult time Matthew Perry had because of his drug abuse problem. Aniston’s concerns about the actor would find new relevance when he would be found dead due to the acute effects of ketamine in 2023.

According to a report published by People magazine on December 15, 2023, the actor died due to ‘unknown route of drug intake,’ as per the autopsy report. While Perry was found dead in a residential pool, with ‘prescription medications and loose pills present at his residence,’ no pills were found near the pool.

Jennifer Aniston and the others supported Perry all along

Perry was quite frank about his addiction and his fight against the same. He discussed the subject candidly in his 2022 memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, wryly remarking that in the dictionary under the word ‘addict,’ “there should be a picture of me looking around, very confused.”

Perry also repeatedly remarked how Jennifer Aniston and his other Friends co-stars were helpful and sympathetic to him. The report from People magazine carries the following statement from the late actor:

“They were understanding, and they were patient.”

He used the analogy of penguins to describe the nature of the support he had from his co-stars. He remarked that just as one penguin helped another injured one and kept supporting them until they were fit to walk on their own, the cast also supported him through his tough times.

He had particular praise for Jennifer Aniston, who stood by him through it all. In his own interview given to Diane in 2022, he said that Aniston was the one who had supported him the most. Perry added:

“You know, I’m really grateful to her for that.”

In a joint statement dated October 31, 2023, obtained by People magazine, the Friends cast members expressed their intense grief over Perry’s death and highlighted that they were like a family.
