  • Ohio State legend Cris Carter calls Buckeyes freshman WR Jeremiah Smith ‘the best player in the country’


    Ohio State legend Cris Carter’s program record of eight touchdown receptions by a freshman stood since 1984. In the time since, the Buckeyes have been a factory that consistently churns out All-Americans and first-round NFL Draft picks at the wide receiver position, including the likes of Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave and Marvin Harrison Jr. 

    But no one could break Carter’s record until Ohio State freshman phenom Jeremiah Smith came along. It took Smith just nine games into his collegiate career to log his ninth touchdown catch, breaking Carter’s record in the process. He added to that total and set a Big Ten record for touchdown catches by a freshman with 14 on the season through Ohio State’s run to the College Football Playoff National Championship game. 

    Before Monday’s national title game vs. Notre Dame, Carter spoke with CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd in Atlanta. Though Carter said that Ohio State’s receivers don’t compare themselves to one another, he was quick to crown Smith with some lofty praise. 

    “He’s the best player in the country. He has an unbelievable work ethic,” Carter said. “His high school coach and the people he has around him have really done a great job. He’s humble as can be and you can see that. He’s one of the first in the building at Ohio State. He’s one of the last ones to leave. 

    “He has a professional mentality a lot like some of the other great receivers that we saw at a young age: Julio Jones, Larry Fitzgerald, Calvin Johnson — all those guys were unique in their own way and so is (Smith).”

    That’s great company for Smith, who received comparisons to Jones before he ever stepped foot on Ohio State’s campus. Smith, the first wide receiver to be ranked No. 1 nationally in his recruiting class by 247Sports, has been a focal point of the Buckeyes’ offense all season. 

    He had six catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns in his Ohio State debut against Akron. Smith surpassed at least 50 yards receiving in 10 straight games to start the 2024 season. 

    His production has really ramped up throughout the playoff. Though Smith was largely held in check in the Buckeyes’ Cotton Bowl semifinal win against Texas, Smith had 13 catches for 290 yards and four touchdowns through the first two rounds. His 187 yards in the Rose Bowl versus Oregon set the Ohio State school record for receiving yards in a game by a freshman. 

    “His releases, his route running, 50-50 balls — as we can see as the season’s gone on, he’s gotten better and he’s going to get a lot better before he gets drafted in the NFL in a couple years.” Carter said.

    In a recent interview, Ohio State legend Cris Carter had high praise for Buckeyes freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, calling him “the best player in the country.” Carter, who had a standout career at Ohio State before going on to have a successful career in the NFL, has been keeping a close eye on Smith’s performance this season.

    Smith, who has already made a big impact in his first season with the Buckeyes, has been turning heads with his speed, agility, and playmaking ability. Carter believes that Smith has the potential to be a game-changer for Ohio State and a future star in college football.

  • Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith ‘can’t wait to put on a show’ vs. Notre Dame

    ATLANTA — After being limited to one catch in Ohio State‘s Cotton Bowl semifinal victory over Texas, freshman phenom Jeremiah Smith gave a warning Saturday in advance of the Buckeyes’ national championship matchup against Notre Dame.

    “If you are going to play man [to-man defense] against Ohio State, be ready,” Smith said. “I can’t wait to put on a show.”

    Smith, who repeatedly pointed out during his media day availability that the Irish play man-to-man defense “80%” of the time, acknowledged that he relishes when defenses try to stop him with only one defender.

    “What [the Irish do] they do very, very well. So for them to change up what they do, would be kind of silly,” Ohio State wide receivers coach Brian Hartline told ESPN. “They’re really, really good players, great players on the outside. And we’re really great players on the outside, too. It’s what you want in a game of this magnitude.”

    Following Smith’s best game of the season against Oregon in the Rose Bowl (187 yards and two touchdowns), Texas’ secondary sold out to stop Smith, whose only catch in the Buckeyes’ win was for 3 yards.

    “You watch the film — they doubled, tripled me,” Smith said. “It’s frustrating, but being a decoy helped us win the game.”

    In his first year at Ohio State, Smith has been a supernova, catching 71 passes for 1,227 yards and 14 touchdowns. Heading into this game, he’s averaging 17.3 yards per catch.

    “He’s one of the most talented dudes I’ve been around … you always want to try to get him the ball,” quarterback Will Howard said. “But he can also take out two or three guys at a time [as a decoy], and sometimes that’s a good thing.”

    Smith’s performance in the Cotton Bowl was by far his least productive of the season, but it helped to open up opportunities for other skill players such as Carnell Tate (seven catches for 87 yards) and Quinshon Judkins (two receiving touchdowns).

    Whether the Irish try to go away from their usual playing style in order to limit Smith or stick to their scheme remains to be seen. Although Smith noted that Notre Dame’s secondary might be the best they have faced all season, he is ready for the challenge.

    “If I’ve got to be a decoy in this game, I’ll be a decoy,” Smith said. “All I want to do is win.”

    Also, Ohio State star DE JT Tuimoloau, who rolled his ankle against Texas, talked about his health and the injury.

    “I feel really good. I feel really good. One thing, our strength coach says you can’t do too much of taking care of your body, so I’m overloaded on take care of everything.”

    Tuimoloau said he’s been somewhat limited in practice to nurse the ankle back.

    “Me and Coach Day bumped heads; I want to get out there, he wants me to rest, so we met somewhere in the middle.”



    Ohio State’s star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith is gearing up for a highly anticipated matchup against Notre Dame, and he “can’t wait to put on a show” for fans and scouts alike.

    Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith breaks Big Ten’s freshman TD receiving record


    Jeremiah Smith was already in the Ohio State record books. Now he’s in the Big Ten record books too. 

    The Buckeyes‘ sensational receiver set the single-season conference record for most touchdown receptions by a freshman, hauling in a catch from Will Howard and taking it 45 yards to the house on Ohio State’s first possession against Oregon in the Rose Bowl. 

    The previous record belonged to Purdue’s Rondale Moore, who totaled 12 touchdown catches in 2018.

    Smith tied the record in Ohio State’s first-round College Football Playoff game against Tennessee, then broke it in the quarterfinal matchup against the Ducks. The 19-year-old tallied a game-high six catches for 103 yards and two touchdowns against the Volunteers. 

    He entered the Rose Bowl with 63 receptions for 1,037 yards and 12 touchdown receptions, all of which are freshman records at Ohio State, surpassing the numbers Cris Carter had in 1984. Smith also had four carries for 47 yards and another touchdown during the regular season.

    After coming to Ohio State with much fanfare, the nation’s No. 1 recruit has lived up to the hype.

    “He’ll probably be the best receiver to come through here,” Buckeyes cornerback Denzel Burke said in the week leading up to the Rose Bowl. “He’s already on that verge, so really happy for him.”

    Burke is qualified to offer his opinion, having played with and practiced against the Buckeyes’ recent crop of NFL first-round receivers. Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave, Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Marvin Harrison Jr. were all selected in the top 20 over the past three drafts, and senior Emeka Egbuka could join them this spring.

    “I’ve seen a lot of great receivers,” Burke said. “I’ve seen Garrett. I’ve seen Jaxon, seen Chris. I’ve seen Marvin Harrison — he was my class, too. So just being able to see that and being able to see those qualities in him. But he’s Jeremiah Smith. He’s a whole different person, so that’s awesome.”

    Now, Smith stands on his own in Big Ten history.

    Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith has made a big impact in his first season with the Buckeyes, breaking the Big Ten’s freshman touchdown receiving record. Smith, a highly touted recruit out of high school, has lived up to the hype and then some with his performance on the field.

    In a game against Michigan State, Smith hauled in his 10th touchdown reception of the season, breaking the previous record set by former Penn State standout Chris Godwin in 2014. Smith’s combination of speed, route-running ability, and hands have made him a nightmare for opposing defenses to cover.

    The future looks bright for Jeremiah Smith and Ohio State as they continue their quest for a Big Ten championship and potentially a spot in the College Football Playoff.     Ohio State and Oregon played each other during the regular season, and it turned out to be one of the better college football games of the year as the Ducks won the game 32-31.

    The two teams meet again on Wednesday in the College Football Playoff. Buckeyes wide receiver Jeremiah Smith warned the Ducks’ defense about playing man-to-man defense against him. He said if that happens, Will Howard would take a shot with him deep.

    The freshman standout had nine catches for 100 yards and a touchdown in their first meeting. He vowed to bring a different game to Oregon than they saw on Oct. 12.

    “They’re going to see a completely different player than the last time,” he told reporters before their Rose Bowl matchup, via ESPN. “Even (receivers coach Brian Hartline) told me the other day that I’m a whole different player from the first time we played Oregon until now. It started with understanding the game plan and knowing what the defense is trying to do.”

    Smith expressed his frustrations with the loss to Michigan in the last regular-season game of the season. He suggested a lot of it was taken out on Tennessee in the first round of the College Football Playoff.

    “Well, Tennessee, you seen what they tried to do and what happened,” he said. “Just took shots and put it up on them, and got to continue to do that.”

    Smith has already been compared to some of the great wide receivers who have come out of Ohio State in recent years as well as being selected for top-tier accolades such as Big Ten Receiver of the Year and Second-Team All-America.

    However, he is trying to keep things in perspective.

    “It’s a blessing, I mean, but just can’t let that statement just get in my head,” he said. “I know I have two, three more years left here just to develop and just get better.”

    LOS ANGELES — Jeremiah Smith served notice Monday to Oregon‘s defense if it chooses to play single coverage on him or any of the Ohio State receivers.

    “I’m just laughing in my head. Why are y’all really playing man-on-man against us, or against me, I should say?” Smith said. “And when we see man [coverage] against any of our receivers, we’re going to take a shot down the field.

    “So I’m just letting everybody know right now that if you play man Wednesday, we’re taking a shot.”

    Smith, Ohio State’s dynamic freshman receiver, torched Tennessee with six catches for 107 yards and two touchdowns in the Buckeyes’ 42-17 rout of the Vols in the first round of the College Football Playoff on Dec. 21. He was a one-man wrecking crew against Tennessee’s man coverage.

    Smith will be a focal point for Oregon in the Rose Bowl Game presented by Prudential when the two teams meet Wednesday in a rematch of their Oct. 12 game, won 32-31 by the Ducks in Eugene.

    “They’re going to see a completely different player than the last time,” said Smith, who caught nine passes for 100 yards and a touchdown in the first game against Oregon. “Even [receivers] Coach [Brian] Hartline told me the other day that I’m a whole different player from the first time we played Oregon until now. It started with understanding the game plan and knowing what the defense is trying to do.”

    Smith said the entire Ohio State team was “pissed off” about the 13-10 home loss to Michigan to end the regular season and played that way against Tennessee. He said the same goes for the Buckeyes’ first loss, earlier in the season to Oregon.

    “We were ready to get that bad taste out of our mouth, let it all loose and dominate Tennessee,” Smith said. “Here’s a chance to do it again.”

    It was an “angry” team that took the field against Tennessee, Ohio State quarterback Will Howard said.

    “And you could see it,” Howard said. “And I think when we play like that, we’re hard to beat, and we have to keep that same mentality. I think that’s really what the difference was, that anger, [being] pissed off, that chip on our shoulder we played with, and that’s going to be crucial in this game.”

    The same goes for getting the ball to Smith, who leads the team in receiving yards (1,037) and touchdown catches (12). He said he arrived on campus weighing 208 pounds but is now up to 225 — and hasn’t lost a step.

    Senior cornerback Denzel Burke is amazed every time he sees the 6-foot-3 Smith make an opposing cornerback look helpless.

    “He’s one of the best I’ve seen, and I think will be the best to come through here, and I’ve seen a lot of great ones and played with them,” said Burke, reeling off the names of NFL receivers Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave, Marvin Harrison Jr. and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. “You see all those same qualities. He’s calm. His work ethic is crazy, and he performs on game day.

    “He’s just different. He’s a dog. You don’t see that in a young 18-year-old coming out of high school.”

    Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, who has been a head coach at both the collegiate and NFL ranks, said Monday that he has yet to see a receiver just like Smith.

    “Not with that combination of size and speed and ability to catch and ability to track the ball,” Kelly said. “There have been some other guys smaller that can do it and guys who were the same size, but they didn’t run and move like him. And then it’s his approach and mindset that truly make him special.

    “We have to pull him back sometimes in practice. Some guys with that skill set will be like, ‘Nah, I’ve got this.’ But he never wants to miss anything. He’s going to continue to grow because he wants to.”

    Smith said the leaders of the team, the regular and fifth-year seniors, have been the ones to help Ohio State weather the storm this season and get the Buckeyes to this point where they still have a chance to win a national championship despite the close losses to Michigan and Oregon. The loss to the Wolverines was especially hard to stomach. Ohio State was a three-touchdown favorite and has now lost four straight in the rivalry after winning eight in a row.

    “Nobody wants to lose to [Michigan]. Everybody knows that, and I know the fans hate it. It’s been going on for the last couple of years, and I know they’re tired of it,” Smith said. “But we were going to move forward, and the leaders on our team were going to make sure that happened. We were going to be ready for whoever we played first [in the playoff], and I can promise you we’ll be ready for this game and everybody else who comes next.”
