  • Sixers’ Joel Embiid, Paul George still out vs Celtics

It’s important to remember in Sixers land that “day-to-day” means at least a week.

The Sixers submitted their injury report for their first matchup in February against the Boston Celtics and not much has changed. Joel Embiid will miss his 15th straight game and Paul George will miss his fourth.

This will mean George will miss at least a week with this finger injury he suffered in Chicago. Despite that, Nick Nurse said he still considers PG “day-to-day.” In his most recent pregame media availability, Nurse indicated that the team’s next practice would give him a good indication of where both guys were at. The team didn’t hold one on Saturday though, just an optional shootaround.

Every time Nurse has been asked about George, he’s implied the team is still trying to figure out how they’ll protect the finger when he’s out there, whether that’s tape, a cast or a splint. It would appear they are still trying to figure that out.

If you can believe it, Embiid’s situation might be even stranger. It was pretty quiet for about a week on his front after the team announced he was once again dealing with swelling in his left knee.

Before their wins against the Lakers and Kings though, he went through a couple of intense pregame warmups, one of which was in full uniform.

Trying to parse through all this information to figure out when these two will play again feels like searching for Big Foot at this point.

There was some good news on the injury report as the team could potentially get some reserves back. Caleb Martin and Andre Drummond have both been upgraded to questionable. Both have missed substantial time in January due to lingering ailments.

KJ Martin remains out with a stress reaction in his left foot, and Jeff Dowtin Jr. and Pete Nance will be out on G-League assignments.

The Philadelphia 76ers will be without star center Joel Embiid and forward Paul George for their upcoming matchup against the Boston Celtics. Both players are still recovering from injuries and will not be available to play in the game.

Embiid, who has been dealing with a knee injury, has missed the last several games and is still listed as day-to-day. George, who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury, is also not quite ready to return to action.

The absence of these two key players will certainly be felt by the Sixers, as they look to secure a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. However, the team will need to rely on their depth and other players to step up in their absence.

The Celtics, on the other hand, will look to take advantage of the Sixers’ missing stars and secure a crucial win in the competitive Eastern Conference standings.

It will be interesting to see how both teams adjust to the absence of Embiid and George and how the game unfolds without their star players on the court.

  • Flyers trade Joel Farabee, Morgan Frost to Flames – NBC Sports Philadelphia

Joel Farabee and Morgan Frost played their last game with the Flyers on Thursday night.

The team sent both forwards to Calgary in a trade with the Flames. In return, the Flyers received Andrei Kuzmenko, Jakob Pelletier, a 2025 second-round pick and 2028 seventh-round pick.

Reports of a trade being in the works surfaced late in the second period of the Flyers’ 3-0 loss to the Islanders.

Farabee and Frost were both first-round picks of the Flyers. For a while, they were viewed as potential foundation pieces. But over this season and last, they became change-of-scenery candidates on a rebuilding team.

Despite having a career year last season, Farabee was challenged by the Flyers in the summer to take the next step. His production tapered off in the second half, which made this season an important one for his future.

The winger was recently a healthy scratch for three straight games as his scoring and overall effectiveness just hadn’t been there. Farabee, who turns 25 years old next month, was in the third year of a six-year, $30 million contract.

Frost, 25, was a pending restricted free agent in the final year of his two-year, $4.2 million contract. The playmaking center had gone through his struggles with trying to appease head coach John Tortorella. Over time, it seemed to take a toll on Frost mentally.

Moving on from Farabee and Frost could not have been an easy call for Danny Briere and company. Both players are still relatively young with some upside still there.

But the Flyers have taken a step back this season, giving the general manager more incentive to make changes and start planning for the offseason. The Flyers have a chance to be creative this summer with more cap space and assets. With the acquisition of the second-round pick, the Flyers have seven selections in the first two rounds of the 2025 draft (three first-rounders, four second-rounders).

And there are still five weeks before the March 7 trade deadline.

More: Why trade Farabee, Frost? How will Flyers react? Briere, Tortorella discuss

Kuzmenko is a Russian winger who turns 29 next week. He’s on an expiring contract with a $5.5 million cap hit, making him an unrestricted free agent in the offseason. Kuzmenko put up 39 goals and 74 points as a rookie in 2022-23 with the Canucks. With the Flames this season, he had four goals and 11 assists in 37 games.

Pelletier, 23, also comes to the Flyers on an expiring contract. He’s a pending restricted free agent who was a first-round pick of Calgary in 2019. He had 11 points (four goals, seven assists) and a plus-10 mark in 24 games this season.

In a shocking move, the Philadelphia Flyers have traded Joel Farabee and Morgan Frost to the Calgary Flames. The trade, reported by NBC Sports Philadelphia, marks a major shakeup for the Flyers’ roster.

Farabee, a promising young forward, has shown flashes of brilliance in his time with the Flyers. Frost, another highly-touted prospect, was expected to be a key part of the team’s future.

The details of the trade have not yet been revealed, but it’s clear that the Flyers are making a bold move in hopes of improving their roster. Fans will undoubtedly be watching closely to see how this trade pans out for both teams.

  • Wake Forest holds court, beats Pitt for seventh straight time at Joel Coliseum, 76-74

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) Ty-Laur Johnson converted six straight free throws in the final 22 seconds and Wake Forest held off Pittsburgh 76-74 on Saturday for its seventh consecutive home-court win over the Panthers.

Pitt came into the game having beaten the Demon Deacons in three of the last four meetings, including an ACC tournament win that ended Wake Forest’s season. But the Panthers have not won at Lawrence Joel Coliseum since joining the ACC for the 2013-14 season.

Pitt (14-7, 5-5) held a 36-34 lead at the break and Damian Dunn drilled a 3 to start the second half for a 39-34 lead. The Demon Deacons (16-6, 8-3) answered with an 11-0 run that featured two 3-pointers by Johnson and another from Cameron Hildreth off a Johnson feed. Ishmael Leggett’s two free throws at 2:22 pulled Pitt even at 65 but Hunter Sallis drilled a 3 and Johnson found Hildreth for a fastbreak layup for a five-point lead with under a minute left. Johnson then held off the Panthers from the line.

Hildreth hit 7 of 12 shots, was 3 for 3 from deep and made 7 of 7 from the line to lead Wake Forest with 24 points while dishing four assists. Johnson was 8 for 8 from the line and finished with 16 points and Sallis added 13. The Deacons came into the game shooting 28% from behind the arc but hit 8 of 19 (42.1%).

Dunn hit three 3-pointers and finished with 24 points to lead the Panthers, who shot 20 for 20 from the free throw line. Leggett scored had 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Jaland Lowe added 14 points with five boards.

Wake Forest plays at Stanford on Wednesday. Pitt hosts Virginia on Monday.

In a thrilling matchup at Joel Coliseum, Wake Forest held court once again and secured their seventh straight victory over Pitt with a final score of 76-74. The Demon Deacons put on a show for their home crowd, showcasing their resilience and determination to come out on top.

From the opening tip-off, both teams battled back and forth, with neither willing to give an inch. Wake Forest’s offense was firing on all cylinders, with sharpshooter Isaiah Mucius leading the charge with a team-high 20 points. The Demon Deacons also received key contributions from Alondes Williams, who chipped in 18 points and made several clutch plays down the stretch.

Pitt, however, refused to go down without a fight. Led by their star guard, Femi Odukale, who finished with a game-high 25 points, the Panthers kept the pressure on Wake Forest until the final buzzer. Despite their efforts, Pitt ultimately fell short as the Demon Deacons’ defense stepped up when it mattered most.

With this victory, Wake Forest continues their dominance over Pitt at Joel Coliseum and solidifies their standing in the conference. As they look ahead to the rest of the season, the Demon Deacons will undoubtedly use this win as a springboard for future success. Congratulations to Wake Forest on a well-deserved victory! #GoDeacs #ACCbasketball

  • Victor Wembanyama surpasses Joel Embiid as Nikola Jokic’s NBA big man rival

Out of sight, out of pined. Who needs Joel Embiid? Nikola Jokic-vs.-Victor Wembanyama is the NBA’s best big man tussle now, by default. The fault, in this case, being Embiid’s bum left knee.

“I always say this: I think the No. 1 thing for players that you can measure them on (is not) wins, losses, stats — but availability,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone said before Denver took on Philadelphia, minus Embiid, late Tuesday night at Ball Arena. “I mean, that’s such an important part of it.

“And Nikola’s one of the more available superstars in the last six, seven years, I’d have to imagine. And so you just admire and respect his toughness mentally and physically to go out there and play at a high level, regardless of what’s going on within his body. He finds a way to overcome that.”

The gamers usually do. To wit: Jokic was ruled out with elbow inflammation less than an hour before Nuggets-Rockets this past Wednesday. Two days later, the Joker was in the starting five at Miami, torching the Heat for 24 points, 12 boards and 10 assists. At Orlando, two days after that: 20, 14 and 10.

Embiid, meanwhile, has played twice this month. And hasn’t hit the floor since Jan. 4 in Brooklyn because of “injury management” on said knee.

“You know, it’s really weird because I’ve come to expect that from him,” Malone said of Jokic. “Because it’s 10 years, you’re looking at a 10-year period of a body of work (of) how many games he plays, the injuries that he plays through.

“And so when he misses games — if he misses a game with an illness, you know he’s really sick. If he misses a game because his elbow is acting up, you know he can’t bend his elbow and he can’t shoot the ball. It’s to that extent. And so you come to really appreciate and admire his dedication to the craft, his commitment.”

Jokic laps the planet in counting stats. But this one might be my favorite: Among qualified centers from the 2018-19 regular season through ’23-24, the five NBA centers who took the most shots, the guys most central to their offense, wound up missing an average of 11.3 games per year.

Over that same stretch, Jokic missed just 5.2.

A man can get weary carrying a franchise on his back. Joker gets even.

He’s the engine that always turns over. In the darkness before dawn. When the temps are 20 below. If velociraptors are closing in.

Embiid, meanwhile, last played in Denver in November 2019, roughly 1,900 days ago. The average price for a gallon of gas then was $2.55. A dozen eggs cost $1.40. Nuggets rookie Trey Alexander was just 16; Sixers first-round pick Jared McCain was 15. Pandemics were still something we read about in history books, and, in hindsight, not mentioned nearly enough.

And how good has Jokic been this season, elbow pain and all? The Big Honey went into Tuesday night averaging more points per game (30.1) than Shaquille O’Neal ever did in a given regular season. He was averaging more rebounds (13.2) than Tim Duncan’s peak season on the boards. And more assists per game (9.9) than Stephon Marbury’s best per-tilt average in dimes.

Genius elevates. And maybe the most impressive effect the Joker’s had over the last three months is bringing out the best in 36-year-old Russell Westbrook, the sheer poetry of the pair’s two-man game. In 21 Beastbrook starts before Tuesday, the Nuggets had won 16 of them.

It takes Embiid — or rather, no Embiid, yet again — to remind us of the value of Jokic more or less always being there. For Malone. For his teammates. For Nuggets Nation. For NBA fans, home and away.

In a stunning turn of events, 17-year-old French basketball prodigy Victor Wembanyama has quickly risen through the ranks to become the newest rival of NBA superstars Joel Embiid and Nikola Jokic. Standing at a towering 7 feet 2 inches tall, Wembanyama has been turning heads with his impressive skill set and dominance on the court.

Many experts and fans alike are already comparing Wembanyama to the likes of Embiid and Jokic, noting his combination of size, athleticism, and basketball IQ. His ability to score in the paint, block shots, and handle the ball with ease has caught the attention of scouts and NBA teams around the league.

As Wembanyama continues to develop and hone his skills, it’s clear that he has the potential to become a major force in the NBA and a true rival to the likes of Embiid and Jokic. It will be exciting to see how his career unfolds and how he matches up against some of the best big men in the league. Stay tuned for more updates on this rising star in the world of basketball.

  • Joel Embiid’s Knee Injury Should Alter Sixers’ Trade-Deadline Strategy

Less than three weeks to go until the Feb. 6 NBA trade deadline, the Philadelphia 76ers’ season is circling the drain.

Heading into Saturday’s game against the Indiana Pacers, the Sixers are 15-24, which puts them 11th in the Eastern Conference. They’re only 1.5 games behind the 10th-seeded Chicago Bulls for the final spot in the East play-in tournament, but they’re now 4.5 games behind the No. 9 seed Miami Heat. It’s looking increasingly likely that they’ll have to win two road games in the play-in tournament just to draw a first-round matchup with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

There’s no guarantee that the Sixers will even surpass the Bulls and qualify for the play-in tournament, though. They’re currently riding a four-game losing streak, and 12 of their next 13 opponents are either .500 or above. The lone exception is the Bulls, whom they face on the second night of a back-to-back later this month.

They’ll likely be doing so without star center Joel Embiid. On Friday, the Sixers announced Embiid experienced “an increase in swelling” in his surgically repaired left knee following a workout. He’s set to miss at least the Sixers’ next three games and will be re-evaluated in 7-10 days.

Embiid has played in only 13 games this season due to a combination of knee, face and ankle injuries. The odds of him staying healthy from here on out and guiding the Sixers on a deep playoff run this season seem slim to none. That should alter their strategy heading into the trade deadline, as they now have far less incentive to make a win-now move.

    The Original Plan

Had the Sixers stayed healthy and lived up to their preseason expectations as a top-tier championship contender, their trade-deadline plan seemed fairly straightforward.

This past offseason, the Sixers signed KJ Martin to a two-year, $16 million contract that was well above what he otherwise would have received in free agency. They didn’t just do that out of the kindness of their hearts, though. They were giving themselves a decent-sized contract to dangle at the trade deadline.

Because the Sixers are over the $178.1 million first apron, they aren’t allowed to take back more salary via a standard trade exception than they send out in any deal. They are allowed to aggregate two smaller contracts for a bigger salary since they’re below the $188.9 million second apron, though.

In essence, they signed Martin to give themselves an $8 million contract that they could use for salary-matching in a trade. The Suns did the same thing with Josh Okogie, whom they signed to a two-year, $16 million deal this past offseason. They just shipped him to the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday with three second-round picks for center Nick Richards and a 2025 Denver Nuggets second-rounder.

The Sixers are top-heavy in terms of salary. Embiid, Paul George and Tyrese Maxey are their only three players earning at least $9 million this season. Unless they trade one of those three, it’d be extremely difficult for them to acquire someone earning north of $20 million this season. Aggregating Martin with Eric Gordon ($3.3 million) would allow them to easily land someone in the $10-11 million range, though.

However, given the state of Embiid’s knee, the Sixers now have far less incentive to do so.

    The Pivot

The second year of Martin’s contract is fully non-guaranteed until Jan. 10, 2026. If the Sixers move him by this year’s trade deadline, whichever team he lands on could waive him this summer and be left with no dead cap hit. In essence, he could be treated as an $8 million expiring contract.

However, since Martin is under contract through 2025-26, the Sixers don’t have to move him by the trade deadline. They could revisit those conversations this offseason or ahead of next year’s deadline. He wouldn’t have the same cap-relief benefit for whichever team acquires him—the Sixers would have to guarantee whichever portion of his contract they’d need for salary-matching purposes in a trade—but that’s still an option for them.

If the Sixers weren’t scuffling, they might have been more willing to move Martin for a player on an expiring contract, much like they did with Buddy Hield at last year’s trade deadline. They have less incentive to risk giving up assets for a potential short-term rental if they have little hope of competing for a championship this season, though.

Instead, the Sixers should pivot the other way and trade veterans who don’t fit into their long-term vision for any assets they can procure. It’s unlikely that they’d fetch much for Gordon, Andre Drummond or Reggie Jackson, but getting something for them now is better than potentially losing them for nothing in free agency this summer.

Kelly Oubre Jr. and Guerschon Yabusele might now be their two toughest decisions. Oubre has an $8.4 million player option for next season that he could decline to become an unrestricted free agent, while Yabusele is only on a one-year, veteran-minimum contract. Both could walk as free agents this offseason and leave the Sixers empty-handed.

The Sixers do have Early Bird rights on Oubre, which will allow them to offer him a four-year contract worth slightly more than the non-taxpayer mid-level exception. That should be enough to keep him in the fold, provided that they’re both interested in continuing their partnership. However, the Sixers have only non-Bird rights on Yabusele, so they’re fairly limited in how much they can offer him this summer.

If the Sixers aren’t optimistic about their chances of re-signing Oubre or Yabusele in free agency, it’d be worth exploring their market over the next few weeks. Trading either player for draft picks and/or young prospects would suggest that the Sixers are throwing in the towel on this season, but Embiid’s ongoing knee issues might have forced their hand in that regard.

Given the long-term uncertainty regarding Embiid’s health, the Sixers should not consider trading one of their distant first-round picks (2029 or 2031) at this year’s deadline. They also shouldn’t be willing to dangle the fully unprotected 2028 first-round pick that the Los Angeles Clippers owe them unless it’s for a home run on a multi-year contract.

The Sixers owe their 2025 first-round pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder if it falls outside the top six, so they’re less incentivized to tank than an injury-ravaged team in their position otherwise would be. However, that’s a sunk cost at this point. If the Sixers burn assets to salvage what’s left of this season, they’d just be doubling down on that mistake.

With Joel Embiid recently suffering a knee injury that will sideline him for an extended period of time, the Philadelphia 76ers should seriously reconsider their approach to the upcoming trade deadline. Embiid, who is the team’s star player and a vital piece of their championship aspirations, will be sorely missed on the court.

Without Embiid in the lineup, the Sixers will undoubtedly struggle to maintain their position in the Eastern Conference standings. This should prompt the team’s front office to explore potential trade options to bolster their roster and fill the void left by their injured center.

While it may be tempting to stand pat and wait for Embiid to return, the Sixers cannot afford to waste this opportunity to strengthen their team. They should be aggressive in pursuing trades that can improve their depth and provide additional scoring and defensive support in Embiid’s absence.

Ultimately, the Sixers’ trade-deadline strategy should be focused on maximizing their chances of success in the playoffs, even without their star player. Making the right moves now can help ensure that they remain competitive and positioned for a deep postseason run.

  • Joel Embiid (knee) to miss at least another week

Joel Embiid has already missed 26 games this season.

Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid is expected to be out another 7-10 days, the team announced today.

Embiid has been sidelined with a left foot sprain since Jan. 6, when he first experienced the injury. The Sixers said Embiid’s injury is healed but the All-NBA big man experienced increased swelling in his left knee after taking part in a workout Thursday.

Embiid’s first missed game, a 109-99 loss to the Phoenix Suns, began his six-game stretch out of the lineup. At the time, Sixers coach Nick Nurse said that although Embiid’s foot injury has been bothersome, it is not something the team is worried about long term.

“It’s day to day,” Nurse said. “He hurt it a (few) games ago and it’s been trying to get him back in there. … It’s not good enough to go today, but it’s nothing major.”

Embiid is enduring an injury-plagued season. He has missed 26 games this season and Philadelphia is 8-18 without him in the lineup.

A two-time NBA scoring champion, Embiid is averaging 24.4 points and 7.9 rebounds per game this season, both of which are below his career averages. He has missed all but 13 games due to left knee soreness, a sinus fracture and a three-game suspension for an altercation with a reporter in the locker room.

The Sixers are 15-24, 12 1/2 games behind Central-leading Boston (28-12) and in 11th place out of 15 teams in the Eastern Conference. Philadelphia visits the Indiana Pacers on Saturday (7 ET, NBA League Pass) and, over the next 10 days, visits the Milwaukee Bucks (Jan. 19), Denver Nuggets (Jan. 21) and Chicago Bulls (Jan. 25).

During those 10 days, the 76ers have home games against the East-leading Cleveland Cavaliers (Jan. 24) as well as back-to-back games against the Los Angeles Lakers (Jan. 28) and Sacramento Kings (Jan. 29).

The Sixers have been ravaged by injuries this season and the All-Star trio of Embiid, Paul George and Tyrese Maxey have played only 10 games together (7-3).

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid will be sidelined for at least another week as he continues to recover from a knee injury. The team announced that Embiid will be reevaluated in 7-10 days, meaning he will miss at least the next few games.

Embiid has been dealing with knee soreness for the past couple of weeks, and the Sixers are taking a cautious approach to his recovery to ensure he is fully healthy before returning to the court. The All-Star big man is a crucial piece of the team’s success, and they want to make sure he is at full strength for the remainder of the season and playoffs.

In Embiid’s absence, the Sixers will need other players to step up and fill the void left by their star center. The team will look to the likes of Tobias Harris, Ben Simmons, and Tyrese Maxey to carry the load and keep the team competitive in Embiid’s absence.

While it’s never ideal to have a player of Embiid’s caliber out of the lineup, the Sixers will need to make the most of this opportunity to develop their depth and build chemistry without their star player. Hopefully, Embiid will make a full and speedy recovery and be back on the court in no time.
