  • ‘He’s the National player of the Year’: Auburn basketball on following behind Johni Broome

Johni Broome left Baton Rouge on Wednesday with another reason to be considered the best player in college basketball.

His 26 points and 16 rebounds in Auburn basketball’s 87-74 victory over LSU were a testament to how dominant the Tigers leading scorer has been, reaching his 12th double-double on the season.

No other SEC player has more than six double-doubles this year. After missing two weeks with an ankle injury suffered against South Carolina, Broome has finished his last two games with double-doubles.

Averaging 18.2 points and 11.2 rebounds, it’s clear Broome has the green light for any shot as the leader of this team.

“I mean, Johni’s National Player of the Year, in my opinion. One of the best big men in the country, one of the best players in the country,” Chaney Johnson said. “To have a guy like that back and probably not even 100%, and is still doing as well as he’s doing, it’s great.”

“It’s a great thing for the future of this team and the future of March. We trust him. He trusts in us. He works hard. He plays hard. It’s great to have a guy like him back.”

Broome is the first Division I player to post five games with at least 20 points, 15 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots in a single season. Ironically, the feat hasn’t been done since Morehead State’s Kenneth Faried (6) in 2010-11.

Bruce Pearl talked about the game plan entering most contests and how it’s affected by the opponents’ defensive strategy. If Broome knows a double team is not on the scouting report, he takes full advantage of his matchup.

“When you go into a scout and Johni hears these words, they’re going to play you one on one in the post… You know you got to be careful when you say that to him, because he will take you at your word and you know, nobody’s going to play him one on one in the post,” Pearl said. “When you play against a team that he knows is going to double team in the post, then he’ll go into a game sort of understanding and looking for it.”

During the Maui Invitational, Broome passed Charles Barkley for 28th on Auburn’s career scoring list after averaging 21.7 points.

Wednesday night at LSU, 20 of Broome’s 26 points were scored in the second half. He finished 7-of-9 from the floor after starting the game shooting 3-of-14.

Despite the slow start, Miles Kelly believes with Broome on the floor the game plan plays off of him.

“If nobody can stop him, why would you stop going to him. I think that’s just what will happen. Nobody can really stop him,” Kelly said. “He missed a couple of bunnies around the basket but ended up getting the offensive rebound and putting it back. Just playing off of him — they double, he kicks it out. We have all 40% 3-point shooters around the perimeter. So that’s how we finish the game.”

No matter what the Tigers do in preparation, the product on the court has led to a record-setting 12 Quad-1 victories.

With Broome at the center of it all, Auburn looks to extend its undefeated conference record heading into the final month before March Madness.

The Tigers will travel to Ole Miss Saturday to wrap up its two-game road stretch this week. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN.

Auburn basketball fans are buzzing with excitement as Johni Broome continues to dominate the court and make a strong case for National Player of the Year. Broome’s exceptional skills and leadership on the court have propelled Auburn to new heights this season, and his impact on the team cannot be understated.

With each game, Broome showcases his versatility and determination, consistently putting up impressive numbers and leading his team to victory. His work ethic and passion for the game are evident in every play, earning him the respect and admiration of fans, teammates, and opponents alike.

As the season progresses, all eyes are on Broome as he continues to make his mark on college basketball and solidify his place as one of the top players in the country. With his talent, drive, and dedication to the game, there is no doubt that Broome is a strong contender for National Player of the Year.

Auburn basketball is proud to have a player of Broome’s caliber leading the team, and fans are eagerly anticipating what the future holds for this exceptional athlete. Stay tuned as Broome continues to make his mark on the court and cement his legacy as one of the best players in college basketball. #GoTigers #JohniBroome #NationalPlayeroftheYear

  • College basketball rankings: Johni Broome returns, igniting Player of the Year race as Auburn edges Duke

On the same day Auburn’s Johni Broome suffered an ankle injury at South Carolina that sidelined him for two weeks, Duke’s Cooper Flagg scored a career-high 42 points in a victory at Notre Dame.

That’s when the Player of the Year race flipped.

With Broome on the mend and Flagg on the rise, a decent percentage of us who cover the sport started publicly suggesting that the Wooden Award is Flagg’s to lose. And, in fairness, it probably is; there’s data to support the claim. But if you thought the Player of the Year race was over, think again. Because in just his second game back from that ankle injury, Broome delivered a monster performance of 26 points, 16 rebounds and three blocks in Wednesday’s 87-74 win at LSU that tightened what feels like a two-man race between the two best players on the two best teams.

“That’s a Quad 1 win,” said Auburn coach Bruce Pearl. “That’s a great win for our ball club.”

This season has been filled with great wins for Pearl’s ball club, evidence being that Auburn (19-1 overall) is 12-1 in Quadrant 1 games. It’s a body of work so good that the Tigers are No. 1 in Thursday morning’s updated CBS Sports Top 25 And 1 daily college basketball rankings for the 23rd consecutive day — and I’ll even take it a step further. Auburn’s body of work is so good, and so superior to anybody else’s, that AP voters should keep the Tigers No. 1 on Monday even if they lose Saturday at Ole Miss.

    I know I will.

Cooper Flagg Tracker: Duke star freshman posts monster second half as Blue Devils survive NC State’s upset bid

    David Cobb

Cooper Flagg Tracker: Duke star freshman posts monster second half as Blue Devils survive NC State's upset bid

Obviously, ranking basketball teams is a subjective process and different people do it different ways. Whatever. But this deep into any season, I’ve long believed the body of work should be the biggest factor. And, undeniably, Auburn’s body of work will still be far superior to anybody else’s on Monday regardless of what happens between now and then.

    That’s a fact.

Like I explained earlier in the week, to understand my approach to ranking teams, and, more importantly, the selection committee’s approach to selecting and seeding teams, it’s best to think of Auburn as a golfer with a four-shot lead on the field. The Tigers could bogey the next hole, so to speak, watch everybody else par or even birdie, and they’d still be in the lead. From my perspective, that’s Auburn right now as it sits at No. 1 in the Top 25 And 1 with a 12-1 record in Quadrant 1 while No. 2 Duke is just 5-2 in the same quadrant. Yes, Duke does own a victory (at home) over Auburn, and that’s an important data point. But that one data point isn’t enough to offset the dramatic advantage Auburn holds when it comes to evaluating both teams’ entire bodies of work, and it still won’t be on Monday regardless of what happens over the next four days.

    Top 25 And 1 rankings

In a thrilling matchup between two top college basketball teams, Auburn managed to edge out Duke in a close game. The game was not only significant for the outcome, but also for the return of standout player Johni Broome, who has now re-entered the Player of the Year race.

Broome, who had been sidelined with an injury for several weeks, made a triumphant return to the court and immediately made an impact with his dominant play. His presence on the court was felt throughout the game, as he showcased his scoring ability, rebounding prowess, and defensive skills. Broome’s performance has quickly reignited the conversation about who should be considered the frontrunner for Player of the Year, as he has proven himself to be a force to be reckoned with.

The win for Auburn, coupled with Broome’s return, has undoubtedly shaken up the college basketball rankings. With the tournament right around the corner, teams are jockeying for position and looking to make a statement. Auburn’s victory over Duke and Broome’s standout performance have certainly turned heads and will be a storyline to watch as the season progresses. Stay tuned for more exciting college basketball action as the race for the Player of the Year heats up.

  • Why doesn’t Johni Broome get more foul calls?

    (Zach Bland/Auburn Tigers)

OXFORD, Miss. — Welcome back to a special Saturday edition of the mailbag.

When I first asked for questions, before leaving Baton Rouge for Oxford on Friday, I wasn’t 100% sure if I was going to be able to do the mailbag. But I was surprised to get a lot of them in a short amount of time — to the point where I’m having to save several of them for future editions.

There’s a lot to get to here, and there’s only so much time between this getting published and Auburn’s big road game at Ole Miss this afternoon. Because of that, I won’t go nuts with a long introduction here.

Instead, I will just thank you all once again for allowing me to do this job and travel all across the country to cover the No. 1 team in college basketball. You asked a bunch of questions about these Tigers, along with some fun grab bag ones towards the end.

(I’ll also, in case you missed it, repost our Stretch 4 preview of Auburn-Ole Miss here.)

    Let’s go.

@AUBradLaw posted this graphic. I understand efficient offense, but it’s unbelievable to me that Broome doesn’t get at least a few more whistles with the minutes he plays. Why do you think that is?

    MINIVANROADTRIP

If Johni Broome received the whistles that Cooper Flagg gets, would there even be a discussion for POTY?

    Salty

People who have been following me for a while know that I rarely pass on an opportunity to criticize college basketball officiating. I think SEC games are the most unfairly refereed ones in the sport, because the calls don’t seem to 1) stay consistent and 2) reflect that this is a conference with some of the best athletes in the country.

That being said, I personally don’t think the whistle on Johni Broome is egregious. Let me explain.

First of all, Brad did the research there with his table. There’s no disputing those numbers, and they paint a good picture of what’s going on right now. I am pretty surprised that Asa Newell doesn’t draw many trips to the free-throw line, considering how much of his game is offensive rebounds and close-range attempts. The freshman from Georgia is an absolute monster down low.

I think that 2-point field goal attempts per free-throw attempts only tell part of the story with Broome, though. Not all shots from inside the arc are created equal.

Let me be very clear with what I’m about to say next, because I don’t want my words to get twisted: Broome is a tough player. He’s won games for Auburn, even after his injury, with his physicality. The dude takes hits and keeps on going, no doubt about it.

However, when I look at Broome, I see more of a finesse big man than a pure power guy that can oftentimes be a foul magnet. Broome wins with his footwork. He creatively gets good looks inside by the way he moves. He also has a pretty good fadeaway jumper, and he obviously will stretch the floor with shots from time to time.

His style isn’t “runaway freight train at the rim.” It’s old-school, in a way, but it’s also polished and smooth. And being a finesse big isn’t a knock on him at all. He makes it work extremely well, as the dominant numbers show.

Because of that, I think Broome is a little less likely to draw foul calls as much as other touch-heavy frontcourt players. Also, the gap between him and others isn’t quite as large as you might think. According to KenPom, Broome draws an average of 5.0 fouls per 40 minutes. That number goes up to 5.6 in league play, which is 12th in the SEC.

Cooper Flagg, on the other hand, draws 6.3 fouls per 40 minutes. That goes up to 6.9 in ACC play. So, for all intents and purposes, Flagg might draw one more foul per game than Broome — or two at the absolute most. Also: KenPom’s No. 3 player in the National Player of the Year rating, Kansas’ 7-foot-2 center Hunter Dickinson, draws just 3.8 fouls per 40 minutes. Villanova’s Eric Dixon, who Brad has in his table, is right near Broome at 5.4 fouls drawn per 40 minutes.

The gap looks a lot bigger for Flagg, though, because of his free-throw rate of 48.4. Broome is at 30.7. But there are reasons for that. Flagg is Duke’s primary playmaker, and he drives and does a lot more off the dribble than Broome does. He naturally draws more contact because of the amount of downhill work he does. That’s the NBA style of play that makes him such a coveted draft prospect. Flagg does get a pro whistle, and that was very evident in Auburn’s loss at Duke.

Broome does things differently, and it’s worth noting that other elite frontcourt players in college basketball aren’t as big of foul magnets as Flagg is. Since he’s Broome’s top competition for national awards, though, it’s easy to point to his numbers and play the “what if” game. That’s only natural, especially for Auburn fans who want to pump up their team’s star player. I get it. I completely get it.

Should Broome be getting some more trips to the free-throw line? Probably so. I think Auburn has had a weird case of not being able to draw those calls, especially in SEC play. The definition of a shooting foul for Auburn isn’t always the same as its opponent. I’ve noticed that in several games this season, and it’s not just for Broome.

Still, I don’t think Broome is getting massively misjudged when it comes to drawing fouls. His style of play is different than Flagg, and I see Broome’s ability to creatively create space with his move set as a huge reason why he’s one of the best players in the country. He’s not just putting his head down and trying to get a whistle. There have been top centers in years past that have done that. He’s a more well-rounded player than that, and it shows.

You can definitely point to examples in certain games this season where Broome has been hacked with no foul call. I won’t dispute that. I will say, though, that the way Broome goes about his business is going to make it less likely that he gets that same exact superstar whistle.

I know the theme has been one game at a time, which it has to be in this conference grind, especially when you’re the hunted team at the top.

Outside of press conference coach speak, do you sense the players and coaches trying to find the balance of one game at a time locked in approach vs. the macro goals of chasing another SEC title / the pressure of knowing March is coming?

I can only imagine the desire to get the Yale taste out of their mouths and make a serious run in a crapshoot like tournament that doesn’t always (usually) crown the best regular-season team.

It’d almost be easy for the team to hit a mid-conference lull with all these factors at play, so just curious if being around team you notice any of those waves throughout the varying months of the long season?

    Kyle

Johni Broome is a dominant force on the basketball court, consistently putting up impressive numbers and impacting the game in a variety of ways. However, one question that often arises is why Broome doesn’t seem to get as many foul calls as other players of his caliber.

There could be a few reasons for this discrepancy. One possibility is that Broome’s style of play doesn’t lend itself to drawing fouls. He is known for his physicality and aggressiveness, which can sometimes make it difficult for officials to determine if contact is a foul or just part of the game.

Additionally, Broome may not be as vocal or demonstrative as other players when it comes to calling attention to fouls. Some players are more adept at drawing fouls by exaggerating contact or drawing attention to it, whereas Broome may simply play through the contact without drawing attention to it.

It’s also possible that officials may not be as familiar with Broome’s game or tendencies, leading to a lack of calls in his favor. As he continues to establish himself as a top player in the league, it’s likely that officials will become more attuned to his style of play and begin to call fouls in his favor more consistently.

Overall, while it may be frustrating for fans to see Broome not getting as many foul calls as they believe he deserves, it’s important to remember that officiating is subjective and can vary from game to game. As Broome continues to develop and refine his game, it’s likely that he will start to get more of the calls that he deserves.

  • Johni Broome’s return keys No. 1 Auburn past No. 6 Tennessee

Miles Kelly hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 30 seconds remaining and Johni Broome had 16 points and 13 rebounds in his return to the lineup as No. 1 Auburn extended its winning streak to 11 games by outlasting No. 6 Tennessee 53-51 on Saturday night.

Auburn (18-1, 6-0 SEC) was held to its lowest point total of the season by Tennessee’s physical defense. Kelly’s trey off a feed from Broome turned a two-point deficit into a one-point advantage.

Tennessee had a chance to retake the lead in the final seconds, but a 3-point try by Zakai Zeigler missed the mark.

Broome, a 6-foot-10, 240-pound fifth-year senior and preseason Associated Press All-American, was back in action for the first time since suffering what Tigers coach Bruce Pearl called a “significant sprain” to his left ankle during a win at South Carolina on Jan. 11. The forward secured crucial defensive rebounds on Tennessee’s final two possessions.

“I just want to thank my trainers and my doctors and Johni Broome for living in the training room for two weeks. I didn’t think he was going to come back tonight, in the middle of the week. And even here the day before, I knew he wanted to go,” Pearl said after the victory. “I didn’t think he was going to be effective. And he had a triple-double tonight: 16 points, 13 rebounds — and he missed 12 shots.

“But I think the team really respected their leader for putting it on the line, and I don’t know if we win if he doesn’t come back.”

Tennessee coach Rick Barnes didn’t take any chances. He had his Volunteers prepared to see Broome, although, in the end, that didn’t stop him.

“There was no doubt in our mind [Broome] was going to play,” Barnes said. “We knew he was going to play. So we prepared all week for him to be there.”

Zeigler had 14 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists to lead the Volunteers (17-3, 4-3). Chaz Lanier added 10 points, including a pair of clutch 3-pointers in the second half.

Both teams shot less than 32% from the field in the defensive slugfest.

“The last thing is that we’ve won four games now in the last possession — four of the last six,” Pearl said. “Last year, we had 20 wins by double digits. And so, whether this team is better or not or whatever we are, this league is better. And so, it’s going be a battle every night. But we are happy with this one, because that’s a great team.”

Auburn will play at LSU on Wednesday. Tennessee will look to bounce back when it hosts No. 9 Kentucky on Tuesday.

“I thought they fought all night long,” Barnes said of his Volunteers. “And we went through just a couple minutes where we didn’t quite stick to the details and gave them a few baskets that we wouldn’t want to give them.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

In a highly anticipated matchup between No. 1 Auburn and No. 6 Tennessee, Johni Broome’s return proved to be the difference maker as the Tigers secured a crucial victory.

Broome, who had been sidelined with an injury for the past few games, made a triumphant return to the court and immediately made his presence felt. The talented forward dominated the paint, finishing with a double-double and showcasing his ability to score and defend at a high level.

Broome’s impact was evident throughout the game, as he provided a much-needed spark for Auburn on both ends of the floor. His tenacity and energy lifted his teammates and helped them secure a hard-fought win against a tough Tennessee squad.

With Broome back in the lineup, Auburn looks to be a formidable force as they continue their quest for a national championship. His return has undoubtedly solidified the Tigers’ status as one of the top teams in the country, and his performance against Tennessee serves as a reminder of his importance to the team’s success.

As Auburn looks ahead to the rest of the season, Broome’s return will undoubtedly be a key factor in their pursuit of greatness. With his talent and determination, the Tigers are poised to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament and compete for a title.

Auburn, Alabama and Florida all stuck around at the top of the poll again this week. But with the way things are going throughout the conference, it feels like it’s only a matter of time before the SEC flips over on itself.

Here’s everything you missed in Week 12 of the college basketball season, and the latest Associated Press men’s basketball poll.

Johni Broome is back, and Auburn is still on top of the SEC.

The Tigers picked up their 11th straight win on Saturday night when they beat Tennessee 53-51. It marked Broome’s first game back from an ankle injury. He had a team-high 16 points and 13 rebounds off the bench in the win, which marked the lowest point total the Tigers have had all year.

Though it wasn’t a great offensive showing — Auburn went just 3-of-20 from the 3-point line — it was a win nonetheless. Auburn held onto the No. 1 ranking in this week’s poll and kept its lead in what has been an otherwise chaotic stretch of conference play. It’ll travel to LSU on Wednesday before a road game against No. 23 Ole Miss on Saturday.

The top five in this week’s poll didn’t change, with Duke, Iowa State, Alabama and Florida all holding strong. Cooper Flagg and the Blue Devils, who will host North Carolina this weekend, grabbed their 13th straight win on Saturday by beating Wake Forest on the road. The Cyclones survived a tight road win over Arizona State on Saturday, too.

Back in the SEC, the Crimson Tide struggled to get past LSU and star Mark Sears sat out of the second half of Saturday’s game after he was held scoreless in the first 20 minutes. The Gators, still 18-2, will turn around and take on Tennessee — which dropped two spots to No. 8 — on Saturday. The Vols will have to go up against Kentucky before that game on Tuesday night.

The Wildcats dropped their second straight game this past week, too. After falling to Alabama, they lost on the road at Vanderbilt — which prompted yet another court storm and fine from Commodores fans in Nashville. The Wildcats fell to No. 12 this week as a result.

Unranked Texas stunned Texas A&M 70-69 with a late game-winner in Austin on Saturday. The Aggies, despite losing three of their last five, held at No. 13.

Still, the SEC has an incredible 10 teams ranked in the polls this week. Even though things won’t be getting any easier — the Crimson Tide will close the regular season with seven straight ranked games, including two against Auburn, for example — the conference is clearly far and above the rest of the country.

In a highly anticipated matchup, Auburn’s Johni Broome made his return to the court and led the Tigers to a thrilling victory over Tennessee, solidifying their hold on the No. 1 spot in the latest Men’s basketball AP poll.

Broome, who had been sidelined with an injury, showed no signs of rust as he put up a dominant performance, scoring a game-high 25 points and grabbing 12 rebounds to lead Auburn to a 78-72 win over the Volunteers.

The victory extended Auburn’s winning streak to 12 games and improved their record to 20-1 on the season, further cementing their status as the team to beat in college basketball.

Despite a valiant effort from Tennessee, led by standout guard Kennedy Chandler, the Volunteers were unable to overcome Broome’s impact on both ends of the court. Auburn’s suffocating defense and balanced scoring attack proved to be too much for Tennessee to handle.

With Broome back in the lineup and playing at an elite level, Auburn looks poised to make a deep run in the upcoming NCAA tournament. The Tigers’ combination of talent, depth, and experience make them a formidable opponent for any team in the country.

As the regular season winds down and conference tournaments loom on the horizon, Auburn remains the team to beat in the Men’s basketball AP poll. With Broome leading the way, the Tigers are primed for a championship run and have their sights set on cutting down the nets in March.

  • Johni Broome injury: No. 1 Auburn’s national player of the year candidate returns vs. Tennessee

    NCAA Basketball: Tennessee at Auburn
    USATSI

Auburn star big man Johni Broome returned to the No. 1 Tigers for Saturday’s showdown vs. No. 6 Tennessee after missing his team’s last two games with an ankle injury. Broome was deemed a game-time decision heading into the week and was listed as questionable to play on the official SEC Student-Athlete Availability Report, but entered the game with 17:20 remaining in the first half to applause from the sold-out crowd at Neville Arena.

Broome was the favorite to win national player of the year before going down with an injury against South Carolina earlier this month. The fifth-year senior is averaging 17.9 points, 10.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists for the No. 1 ranked team in the country. Auburn is the only team in the SEC (5-0) that has yet to lose in conference play.

Broome twisted his ankle with 13:45 remaining in Auburn’s narrow 66-63 win on the road over South Carolina on Jan. 11 and had to be carried off the court. Broome officially suffered a lower-ankle injury (instead of an upper-ankle injury), which could’ve led to a longer rehab process.

The injury against South Carolina wasn’t the first time Broome exited a game this season following an injury scare. Just three minutes into a win over Georgia State last month, Broome checked out with an apparent injury to his right shoulder. He underwent an MRI but was cleared to return for the team’s next game against Purdue.

The Tigers have won their last 10 games since losing to Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium in the ACC/SEC Men’s Challenge last month.

After a brief scare with an injury, Johni Broome, the national player of the year candidate from No. 1 Auburn, is set to make his return to the court against Tennessee. Broome, who has been a dominant force for the Tigers all season, suffered a minor injury in their last game but has recovered quickly and will be back in action for this crucial matchup.

Broome’s presence on the court has been instrumental in Auburn’s success this season, as he leads the team in scoring, rebounding, and shot-blocking. His ability to dominate in the paint and alter shots on the defensive end has made him a standout player and a frontrunner for national player of the year honors.

With Broome back in the lineup, Auburn will look to continue their impressive run and secure another win against a tough Tennessee team. His return will undoubtedly boost the team’s chances of coming out on top and solidifying their position as the top-ranked team in the country.

Fans of the Tigers can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Broome will be back on the court and ready to make an impact once again. His presence will be crucial as Auburn looks to maintain their spot at the top of the college basketball world and make a deep run in the upcoming postseason.

  • Auburn star Johni Broome could return for Tennessee showdown

Auburn coach Bruce Pearl didn’t rule out a return of star forward Johni Broome for the home game against No. 6 Tennessee on Saturday night.

Pearl told ESPN that Broome, who has been out since Jan. 11 with an ankle injury, practiced “some” on Friday. He remains questionable for the game, Pearl said, and a decision is expected close to game time.

Pearl said if Broome is available to play, he wouldn’t play a normal load of minutes. His ankle has been heavily taped the past two days in practice.

Auburn has managed to thrive in Broome’s absence, as it won the game at South Carolina when the injury occurred and beat both Mississippi State at home and Georgia on the road without Broome.

No. 1 Auburn projects as the top overall seed in the NCAA tournament. Broome has been its top player, as he was considered the front-runner for National Player of the Year before the injury. Broome is Auburn’s leading scorer and rebounder with 17.9 points and 10.7 rebounds.

Another key player is in flux for the top-10 clash. Tennessee star guard Jordan Gainey has flu-like symptoms, per a team spokesman and is listed as questionable.

Gainey didn’t travel on the team bus — but rather with the support staff — on the ride from the airport to the team hotel. His status is expected to be monitored throughout the day before a decision is made.

Gainey is Tennessee’s third-leading scorer with 11.2 points per game.

The Auburn Tigers may receive a major boost for their upcoming showdown against the Tennessee Volunteers as star center Johni Broome could potentially make his return to the lineup.

Broome, who has been sidelined with an injury, has been a key player for the Tigers this season, averaging double figures in points and rebounds. His presence in the paint has been sorely missed in recent games, as Auburn has struggled to contain opposing big men without him on the floor.

With the Tennessee game looming large on the schedule, Broome’s potential return could be a game-changer for the Tigers. His shot-blocking ability and rebounding prowess could help neutralize the Volunteers’ frontcourt and give Auburn a much-needed boost on both ends of the floor.

Fans will be eagerly awaiting an official announcement on Broome’s status for the game, but if he does suit up, it could be just the spark the Tigers need to secure a crucial victory in SEC play. Stay tuned for updates on Broome’s potential return and get ready for an exciting matchup between Auburn and Tennessee.

  • Johni Broome injury update: Auburn star’s status revealed vs. Georgia

Auburn center Johni Broome will not play against Georgia on Saturday, according to the SEC injury report. Broome was also unavailable in Auburn’s 88-66 win over Mississippi State on Tuesday.

Broome suffered the injury in the second half of Auburn’s 66-63 win over South Carolina on Jan. 11. The talented big man went up for a rebound and landed on Chaney Johnson’s foot, rolling his ankle in the process.

He immediately yelled in pain and grabbed for his left leg. He needed help from the training staff to get to the locker room. Speaking on the SEC Now postgame show, Pearl said Johni Broome had a “significant sprain” of his left ankle.

While Broome’s injury isn’t believed to be season-ending, he is out indefinitely. It’s a significant blow to the Tigers, who are currently ranked No. 1 in the AP Top 25.

Broome is leading Auburn in four of the five major categories this season, averaging 17.9 points, 10.7 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.7 blocks per game. The ankle sprain is the second injury Broome has suffered this season. He also had a shoulder injury late in non-conference play.

Despite Broome’s absence on Tuesday, Auburn looked phenomenal in its 88-66 win over Mississippi State. In the victory, the Tigers shot 55% from the field and 41.7% from beyond the arc.

Auburn’s defense was suffocating, squeezing 16 turnovers out of the Bulldogs. Auburn capitalized on Mississippi State’s mistakes, recording over twice as many points off turnovers as the Bulldogs did.

Of course, just because the Tigers played well without Broome, doesn’t change the fact that they’ll welcome him back with open arms. After all, Broome is a first-round NBA prospect, according to The Athletic‘s Sam Vecenie.

“I have Johni Broome as a first-rounder,” Vecenie said. “I had Johni Broome, last year, in the Top 40, and he decided to return to school. I think I shared the draft guide profile that I had written last year on Broome. Like, I think Broome is a stud.

“Everywhere he’s gone, he’s kind of kicked ass,” Vecenie added. “He kicked ass at Morehead State, he’s kicked ass for two years now at Auburn. He kicked ass both at the G-Legue Combine and the NBA Combine when he went to those. I’m just a buyer in general. I have him in the 20 to 30 range right now.”

Without Broome leading the charge, Auburn will square off against No. 23 Georgia on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET. The game will air live on the SEC Network.

Auburn fans have been anxiously awaiting news on star center Johni Broome’s injury status ahead of the Tigers’ matchup against Georgia. Broome, who has been a dominant force in the paint all season, suffered a minor ankle sprain in the last game against Kentucky.

Fortunately, the latest update on Broome’s injury is positive. After undergoing treatment and rehab, Broome has been cleared to play in the upcoming game against Georgia. Head coach Bruce Pearl confirmed that Broome has been practicing with the team and is expected to be at full strength for the crucial matchup.

This news comes as a huge relief for Auburn fans, as Broome’s presence in the lineup is crucial for the team’s success. With his shot-blocking ability, rebounding prowess, and scoring touch around the rim, Broome is a key player for the Tigers on both ends of the floor.

As Auburn looks to secure a key win against Georgia, having Broome back in the lineup will undoubtedly give the team a boost. Fans can now breathe a sigh of relief knowing that their star center will be ready to go for the upcoming game. Stay tuned for more updates on Broome’s performance and impact in the game against Georgia.
