‘Hungry’ St. John’s tops Marquette to remain atop Big East
NEW YORK — An aggressive, hounding defense. Bully ball on the offensive end. A Hall of Fame coach walking the sideline. Chants of “Let’s go, Johnnies!” filling Madison Square Garden in the final minute of No. 12 St. John’s 70-64 win over No. 11 Marquette.
For a basketball program desperate to return to relevance — and win its first Big East regular-season championship since 1992 — it was hard to escape the feeling that Tuesday night was a turning point.
There have been false dawns for St. John’s basketball before, but this season’s Red Storm have won nine games in a row and 15 of their past 16, and they sit atop the Big East standings at 11-1.
And now they have the statement win they’ve been looking for all season.
“You guys can see it now,” St. John’s forward RJ Luis Jr. said. “We’re a very hungry group, and we’re very determined to win. We came out tonight, came out fighting, and was able to get the tough win versus a very good Marquette team.”
It was just about one year ago when coach Rick Pitino walked into the news conference following St. John’s eighth loss in 10 games, a 68-62 defeat to Seton Hall after leading by 19 points, and lamented his team’s lack of toughness and athleticism.
“If I said I was disappointed, that would be the understatement of the year,” he said last February. “Our lateral quickness and our toughness is just something I’ve never witnessed in all my years of coaching.”
Twelve months and a revamped roster later, and St. John’s has one of the elite defenses in college basketball, ranking in the top five nationally in adjusted efficiency per KenPom. The team’s effort at that end of the floor has been at the heart of its success, and that was again the case Tuesday.
Despite not shooting well from the 3-point line (3-for-16) or the free throw line (17-for-31), St. John’s held Marquette to 0.95 points per possession — the Golden Eagles’ second-worst offensive performance of the campaign.
There was no possession more evident of the Red Storm’s commitment on defense than after St. John’s took a 66-59 lead in the final two minutes. Marquette needed to come down and score quickly to cut the lead, but the Golden Eagles simply couldn’t get a look at the basket. They dribbled around for 25 seconds before Kadary Richmond blocked a 3-point attempt into the stands with 1:11 remaining.
“I thought all the guys played great defense,” Pitino said. “They help each other, they switch. This is a relentless defensive team, and you see it all the time. … This is a relentless group. A relentless group that’s totally bought into stopping every play.”
St. John’s withstood early shooting woes by attacking the offensive glass. At one point late in the first half, Marquette had made five 3s to the Red Storm’s 0. But St. John’s countered that by grabbing 11 offensive rebounds to Marquette’s 0, resulting in seven second-chance points.
“I thought they played with incredible violence,” Marquette coach Shaka Smart said. “They were just the more aggressive team for the majority of the game.”
Stingy defense and offensive rebounding have been part of the Red Storm’s identity all season, but lately the reemergence of Richmond has given them an added dimension on offense.
Richmond, the No. 1 player in the transfer portal last spring after leaving Seton Hall, hadn’t quite reached the same heights at St. John’s through the first 2½ months of the season. But he had 24 points — including the game winner — 8 rebounds and 8 assists against Providence on Saturday, and he finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists on Tuesday.
“He’s a humble superstar. And I’ll tell you, in this day and age, you don’t get Kadary Richmonds anymore,” Pitino said. “Kadary has been a joy to coach. A humble, hard-working guy who’s getting better at his age, he’s like a fine wine. He’s just getting better and he’s just a great teammate. He doesn’t look for credit, he doesn’t look for praise. He makes a mistake, he goes, ‘It’s on me.’ I wish they would all act like that, but he’s a pro. He’s a professional. He acts that way. So, I’m very lucky to have him.”
As the final seconds ticked off the clock, “We want UConn!” chants rang out from certain corners of the Garden. St. John’s heads to Storrs to face UConn on Friday night, another game for the Red Storm to lay down a marker in their quest for a conference title.
But Pitino wasn’t interested in giving the Huskies any bulletin board material. When asked after the game for his thoughts on the chants about the two-time reigning national champions, the coach was succinct:
“I think they’re drunk.”
In a thrilling matchup, St. John’s University emerged victorious over Marquette to maintain their position at the top of the Big East standings. The game was a nail-biter from start to finish, with both teams trading baskets and playing tough defense.Despite a valiant effort from Marquette, St. John’s was able to pull away in the final minutes thanks to some clutch shooting and strong performances from their star players. The win solidifies St. John’s as a force to be reckoned with in the Big East, as they continue their quest for a conference championship.
Fans of St. John’s can celebrate this hard-fought victory and look forward to more exciting games ahead. With their hunger for success and determination to win, St. John’s is proving to be a team to watch in the Big East.

What to Know
We’ve got another exciting Big East matchup on schedule as the St. John’s Red Storm and the Providence Friars are set to tip at 12:00 p.m. ET on Saturday at Madison Square Garden. The Red Storm will be looking to keep their 15-game home win streak dating back to last season alive.
St. John’s is headed into this one after the oddsmakers set last week’s over/under low at 139.5, but even that wound up being too high. Everything went their way against Georgetown on Tuesday as St. John’s made off with a 66-41 win. The Red Storm have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won nine matches by 21 points or more this season.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead St. John’s to victory, but perhaps none more so than Zuby Ejiofor, who almost dropped a double-double on 13 points and nine rebounds. What’s more, Ejiofor also posted a 83.3% field goal percentage, which is the highest he’s posted since back in March of 2024. Another player making a difference was Kadary Richmond, who went 6 for 7 en route to 13 points plus six rebounds and three blocks.
Meanwhile, Providence had just enough and edged Seton Hall out 69-67 on Tuesday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Friars.
Providence got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Corey Floyd Jr. out in front who earned 11 points plus seven rebounds and five assists. Bensley Joseph was another key player, posting 12 points in addition to seven rebounds.
St. John’s has been performing incredibly well recently as they’ve won 13 of their last 14 matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 18-3 record this season. As for Providence, their win ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 11-10.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: St. John’s has crashing the boards this season, having averaged 41.6 rebounds per game. However, it’s not like Providence struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging 38.5. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we’ll see if one team can grab an edge.
Looking forward, St. John’s is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 13.5 points. This contest will be their eighth straight as the favorites (so far over this stretch they are 5-2 against the spread).
Odds
St. John’s is a big 13.5-point favorite against Providence, according to the latest college basketball odds.
The oddsmakers were right in line with the betting community on this one, as the game opened as a 13.5-point spread, and stayed right there.
The over/under is 143.5 points.

St. John’s is favored by 14 points on the spread with a moneyline of -900. The total is set at 141.5 points.
Here’s my Providence vs. St. John’s predictions and college basketball picks for February 1, 2025.
Providence vs St. John’s Prediction
My Pick: Providence Team Total Under 62.5 (Play to 60)
My Providence vs St. John’s best bet is on the Friars team total under, with the best odds currently available at DraftKings. For all of your college basketball bets, be sure to find the best lines by using our live NCAAB odds page.
Providence vs St. John’s Odds
- Providence vs St. John’s spread: St. John’s -14
- Providence vs St. John’s over/under: 141.5 points
- Providence vs St. John’s moneyline: St. John’s -900, Providence +600
- Providence vs St. John’s best bet: Providence Team Total Under 62.5 (Play to 60)
Spread
St. John’s should run and hide here, but a low scoring blowout could leave the door open for Providence to stay near the spread.
Moneyline
There’s no value here.
Over/Under
I like Providence to stay under it’s team total, but I worry about St. John’s spoiling the game total in a blowout.
My Pick: Providence Team Total Under 62.5 (Play to 60)
Providence vs St. John’s College Basketball Betting Preview
Providence lost star scorer Bryce Hopkins to a season-ending injury after he played in just three games this season, and the Friars have been in a rut without him in the lineup.
Overall, this Providence team plays a bland style of basketball on both ends of the floor. Offensively, the Friars don’t shoot exceptionally well, turn the ball over too much and dribble too much. Defensively, they struggle to force turnovers and feel overly dependent on the shooting prowess of their opponent.
This has led to a murky season, with just one win over a top-50 KenPom opponent, which came in Hopkins’ brief time on the court.
In Big East play, the Friars have won five games against bad teams and lost five games to better teams. Without any discernible skills to lean on, this team feels destined to plod along without radically overperforming or underperforming expectations.
A chance to dance in March is now firmly out of reach, with a minor miracle required over the last six weeks of the regular season.
With a team of mostly upperclassmen and no stand-outs, the Friars feel like a team lost in the woods.
Rick Pitino’s Johnnies have a chance to make real noise this season. The Red Storm have lost just one game since Thanksgiving and haven’t lost a game by more than one possession all year.
St. John’s has done this while spitting in the face of modern analytical thinking, scoring the third-highest percentage of points via 2-point buckets in the country.
St. John’s doesn’t take a lot of 3s, largely because the Red Storm aren’t good at shooting them. Instead, RJ Luis Jr. and Kadary Richmond attack off the dribble, Zuby Ejiofor works in the post and everybody in a St. John’s uniform swarms the offensive glass.
What this team lacks in the added value of 3-pointers, it earns back with second-chance points.
Even when that gambit doesn’t work. St. John’s is confident it can win games defensively. The Red Storm rank fourth in defensive efficiency and best in the Big East.
In 10 Big East games this season, St. John’s is allowing 86.2 points per 100 possessions, per KenPom; second-best in the conference is Marquette at 98.1 points per 100 possessions.
That gap between St. John’s and Marquette’s defensive efficiency is roughly the same as the distance between second-place Marquette and seventh-place UConn. That 86.2 points mark is the best among power conference teams, second to just Southern in the SWAC.
No Big East team has allowed under 90 points per 100 possessions in conference play since the league was re-aligned in 2014, with 2016’s national champion Villanova team setting the low-mark at 95.3.
That’s the kind of defense that travels and can win any game. In January home games versus Butler and Xavier — plus a road game at Xavier — St. John’s combined to shoot 4-of-49 from outside the arc. The Johnnies won all three games.
Providence vs. St. John’s Betting Analysis
When the Friars got their first shot at St. John’s, the game was close. St. John’s escaped with a two-point win. That game came in Providence, while this one tips at Madison Square Garden, where things should be different.
Providence stayed close in the first meeting thanks to a 3-of-18 outside shooting day by the Johnnies (17%).
Elsewhere on the court, St. John’s had the upper hand, nabbing 18 offensive rebounds and forcing 17 Providence turnovers.
This Providence offense isn’t built to withstand the pressure faced by the St. John’s defense. Providence is last in the Big East in assist rate and second-to-last in coughing up turnovers.
Playing with tunnel vision against this Red Storm squad is asking for it, especially without a high-level shotmaker to convert those assist-free looks.
I have trouble seeing Providence squeaking its way past the 60-point mark, and I even took an alternate team total under of 58.5 at +240 at DraftKings.
Providence vs St. John’s Predictions, Picks, Odds for Saturday, February 1The Providence Friars will face off against the St. John’s Red Storm in a highly anticipated college basketball matchup on Saturday, February 1. Both teams are looking to secure a crucial win as they vie for a spot in the postseason.
Providence comes into this game with a record of 11-10 overall and 4-4 in conference play. The Friars have been inconsistent this season, but they have shown flashes of brilliance with wins over top-ranked teams. Led by star guard Alpha Diallo, Providence will look to make a statement against St. John’s.
On the other hand, St. John’s has struggled recently, losing three of their last four games. The Red Storm are currently 13-9 overall and 2-7 in conference play. Despite their recent struggles, St. John’s has the talent to compete with any team in the country.
In terms of predictions, this game is shaping up to be a close battle between two evenly matched teams. Providence has the edge with their experience and depth, but St. John’s has the potential to pull off an upset on their home court.
As for picks, the smart money may be on Providence to come out on top in a hard-fought contest. However, St. John’s is capable of pulling off the upset, especially if they can get their offense going early.
As for the odds, Providence is currently listed as a slight favorite with a spread of -2.5 points. The over/under for total points scored is set at 143.5.
Overall, this game has all the makings of an exciting and competitive showdown between two talented teams. Be sure to tune in on Saturday, February 1, to see who comes out on top in this Providence vs St. John’s matchup.

#Providence #Johns #Predictions #Picks #Odds #Saturday #FebruaryDeivon Smith’s likely St. John’s return comes at a perfect time
St. John’s is getting back its engine — just in time for the biggest stretch of this joyride of a season.
After missing three of the last four games with a bruised right shoulder he injured on Jan. 11, senior point guard Deivon Smith is expected to return Saturday against Providence at the Garden.
He has had multiple full practices since receiving a second cortisone shot, and is ready to go.
Deivon Smith dribbles during St. John’s practice on Jan. 31, 2025. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post “I’m feeling good. I’m not thinking about it,” the 6-foot Smith said Friday. “Mentally, that was the last part, just taking hits, getting out there and running. I’m pretty good now.”
His mindset is simple: “Just play hard, [use my] motor, let the game come to me — same stuff that you guys had already been seeing. I hope my shot goes in. I’ve been working on it.”
This game kicks off a difficult seven-game stretch that includes one contest against No. 9 Marquette, two with No. 25 Connecticut and a second meeting opposite Creighton — the three other top teams in the Big East.
St. John’s (18-3, 9-1) kept on winning even without Smith, entering the matchup with Providence riding a seven-game win streak.
It is off to its best start through 21 games since the 1985-86 campaign and has its highest national ranking, at No. 15, in a decade.
But getting Smith back should only help the Johnnies.
Deivon Smith lies on the ground in pain during the St. John’s-Villanova game on Jan. 11, 2025. Robert Sabo for NY Post Without him, they had to rally from big deficits at home against Xavier and Georgetown, and the offense fell from 49th in efficiency to 65th.
“It was a different type of team,” coach Rick Pitino said. “The pace wasn’t as fast. He gives us more pace. We had great size, we could switch all five positions. That’s a good thing.”
Smith makes St. John’s transition game go, is the team’s best 3-point shooter at 39.2 percent and is a strong defensive rebounder despite his size.
Deivon Smith speaks at St. John’s practice on Jan. 31, 2025. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post The dynamic lead guard is averaging 10.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.8 steals, and St. John’s has outscored the opposition by 178 points with Smith on the floor across 463 minutes.
That averages out to 10.5 points better per game than the opponent in his 17 appearances. Only RJ Luis (13.3) and Zuby Ejiofor (13.1) are more valuable by this metric.
Smith also has the best defensive rating on the team, of 88.3 per 100 possessions, according to BasketballReference.com.
Deivon Smith shoots during St. John’s practice on Jan. 31, 2025. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post It is also the 10th-best mark in the country. While Smith makes St. John’s smaller, it’s hard to say they’re not significantly better with him.
“I think we gambled. We went longer than we should have to get him 100 percent,” Pitino said. “We gambled that we could win without him — it was a big gamble and it paid off. Now I think he’s over the hump.
“He’s a great numbers guy. He’s going to have steals, assists, rebounds, points. Throughout his career, he’s been a guy that checks the boxes.”
Deivon Smith dribbles during the St. John’s-Seton Hall Jan. 18, 2025. USA TODAY Sports via Reuters Con While Smith was out, Kadary Richmond’s play picked up considerably. Over the last seven games, the Seton Hall transfer is averaging 12.2 points, 5.2 assists, 4.8 rebounds and 2.5 steals.
Richmond had no choice but to be more aggressive without St. John’s other top playmaker on the floor. But Pitino doesn’t expect a dropoff.
“We were a good team when they both played together. We’re going to inch him back into the lineup and see what happens,” Pitino said. “Kadary’s just getting better, not because of [Smith’s] absence. Is the ball in his hands a little bit more? Yes, but the ball will still be in his hands a lot.”
Deivon Smith’s likely St. John’s return comes at a perfect timeAfter missing several games due to injury, star guard Deivon Smith is expected to make his return to the St. John’s basketball lineup just in time for a crucial stretch of games. Smith, who has been a key contributor for the Red Storm all season, will provide a much-needed boost to the team as they look to secure a spot in the postseason.
Smith’s return couldn’t come at a better time for St. John’s, as they are set to face off against some tough opponents in the coming weeks. With his ability to score, distribute the ball, and play tough defense, Smith will be a valuable asset for the Red Storm as they look to make a push towards a conference championship and potentially a deep run in the NCAA tournament.
Fans of St. John’s can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that their star player will be back on the court soon, ready to lead the team to victory. Smith’s return is sure to inject new energy and confidence into the Red Storm, and his presence will undoubtedly make a difference in their quest for success.

Two other Big East teams join St. John’s in this week’s AP Top 25 poll, with Marquette falling three spots to No. 10 and UConn falling five spots to No. 19 after both teams lost at home on Saturday.
No. 20 St. John’s (16-3, 7-1 Big East) returns to action on Wednesday, January 22, when they face Xavier Musketeers (12-7, 4-4 Big East) at Madison Square Garden. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1.

Last time these two teams met, Xavier was in a spiral. They hadn’t won a game of consequence since before Thanksgiving, they had lost 5 KenPom A games by a total of 17 points at the end of regulation, and they were coming in having lost 4 of 5. The story of the season to that point was of missed opportunities. They kept the game close for a half before getting sonned on the glass in their own gym and falling out of competition entirely.
That performance merited a players-only meeting. Xavier hasn’t lost since. They rolled a hapless DePaul, revived the season at the 11th hour thanks to Ryan Conwell against Nova, and then grabbed a massive Q1 road win against Marquette. Now, with St. John’s looming, the Muskies are back within touching distance of the bubble.
St. John’s continues to have a solid claim as the class of the league. They have one Big East loss, and it was on the road, by one point, against the best defensive rebounding team in the conference. Since beating Xavier, the dispatched Nova by wearing them down in the second half, dispatched Georgetown by wearing them down in the second half, and dispatched Seton Hall by being way better than them just in general. This team is a machine.
That’s the kind of squad Xavier is going to have to go through to get where they want to be. This is a huge test to determine whether the current hot streak is the start of a run or just a painful false dawn.
Team fingerprint
This is an awful shooting team. They’re 11th in the league from three, 9th from two, and 10th from the line. You know the drill though: every time they huck the ball at the rim, they’ve got dudes flying after it. They’re the top offensive rebounding team in the league and 12th in the entire nation. Their whole offense – which isn’t great, 8th in the league – is predicated on getting up as many first shots as possible and then grabbing the misses. To this end, they’re also excellent in ball security; can’t get the ball on the rim if you turn it over.
Speaking of turnovers, they force a lot of them, almost 1 in every 4 defensive possessions. They’re also excellent at forcing tough shots, ranking first in the league in defensive EFG%. They’re solid on the defensive glass and I’m keeping teams off the line, and they contest the arc well. All of this adds up to the best defense in the Big East by an incredibly wide margin. Their conference AdjD is as far in front of Marquette in second as Marquette is in front of Butler in ninth. These guys are elite.
St. John’s ball security, offensive rebounding, and ability to force turnovers give them a huge edge in shots attempted. In Big East games, they are getting up 12 more shots per game than their opponents. That’s an insane margin; even for an awful shooting team, that’s going to be worth 8-10 points per game. When they get that edge, they’re hard to beat.

He’s hard to keep out of the lane, doesn’t turn the ball over, and is a very capable passer. He’s also a menace on the defensive end, using his size and athleticism to great advantage. If Seton Hall had NLI money, he’d still be there. Simeon Wilcher Shooting Guard Ryan Conwell Sophomore Class Junior 6’4″, 190 Measurements 6’4″, 215 8.9/2.3/1.2 Game line 16.5/2.6/2.3 42.8/30.9/89.5 Shooting line 43.9/39.3/81.6 Simeon was the more heralded recruit of the Wilcher brothers, but he’ll always be second to CJ in my heart and may well end up there in on-court production as well. He’s really athletic and a ery good defender. On offense, he’s a solid slasher and finishes well at the rim, but his production falls off quickly as he gets away from the lane. His primary value is on defense, but he undermines that with 4.1 fouls per 40 minutes. Aaron Scott Small Forward Marcus Foster Senior Class Senior 6’7″, 210 Measurements 6’5″, 215 8.5/4.6/1 Game line 8.3/4.2/1.9 39.7/28.9/83.3 Shooting line 41.7/43.5/70 Scott is a career 35% shooter from three, but he has been shaky in that regard this year. Other than that, he has been what he was brought in to be: a solid, versatile defender with a willingness to work on the offensive glass. He can be a bit foul prone, but otherwise he’s a really strong glue guy whose value will take a step up if he can refind his stroke from deep. I hope he does this weekend. RJ Luis Jr. Power Forward Jerome Hunter Junior Class Senior 6’7″, 215 Measurements 6’8″, 225 17.8/6.5/2.4 Game line 6.3/3.8/0.9 46.2/28.4/75.7 Shooting line 48.9/46.2/74.3 The Johnnies ride this guy like Seattle Slew and he has repsonded with a performance that puts him in the top ten in the KPOY. He’s good at the rim and just on the edge of solid in the mid-range, but he’s not a threat from deep at all. What he is is relentless. His usage rate is off the charts and he draws a ton of fouls. He’s a good offensive rebounder and an excellent defender. His work rate sets the tone for the whole team. Zuby Ejiofor Center Zach Freemantle Junior Class Senior 6’9″, 240 Measurements 6’9″, 227 14.5/8.2/1.1 Game line 16.5/2.6/2.3 57/22.7/68.9 Shooting line 43.9/39.3/81.6 Ejiofor is an animal on the glass. He’s the best offensive rebounder in the league and one of the best in the nation. He had 18 points against Xavier and it felt like each came behind one of his 9 offensive rebounds in the game. His range isn’t noteworthy and he’s not much of a free throw shooter, but he grinds teams down on the glass; he takes effort every time a shot goes up. As is true of most of this squad, he’s a good defender. Reserves
St. John’s isn’t super deep. In fact, their rotation is probably only six significant players deep. Deivon Smith started 13 games earlier this year and is actually having a good season as a backup guard and, at only six feet tall, one of the best defensive rebounders in the conference. He can score reasonably efficiently and takes care of the ball. The only other player averaging double digit minutes off the bench for the Red Storm is Brady Dunlap, and he’s hurt. Vince Iwuchukwu is a monstrous seven footer who somehow didn’t get an offensive rebound the last time these teams met. Ruben Prey logged his most minutes of the season in SJU’s last game and blocked five shots. Other guys will come off the bench, but it’s very much mix and match for seven or so minutes a game for Rick Pitino right now.
Three questions:
– Can Xavier find another way to get defensive rebounds? Play with six guys? Play zone? Play better man to man? Don’t help to shooters? Step on a guys foot when he tries to jump? Just tackle Zuby Ejiofor? Of course most of that is kidding, but Xavier lost the last meeting of these teams because they were embarrassed on the defensive glass. They got humiliated. They cannot let that happen tonight, or they’ll get spanked again.
– Is Ryan Conwell ok? Since the UConn game, Conwell has been a little off. His line in that time is a respectable 15.6/2.3/2.4, but he’s only shooting 39% from the floor and 28% from three over those seven games. His EFG is 48.7%, which means he’s basically shooting like Sasa Ciani. It could be the grind of being the main man, the difference in the Big East from Indiana State, fatigue, or just a slump, but Xavier needs Conwell to get hot, or even just average, again.
– Can the bench provide anything offensively? Against Marquette the offense was pretty wretched, but the bench took it to a whole new level. In a combined 34 minutes they went for 9/2/1. That’s not dreadful, but Dante Maddox, and man, do I love that guy, provided 7/1/0 of it. That means that the entire rest of Xavier’s bench had an output of 2/1/1. That’s simply not good enough.
The Key
– Rebound: Look, there’s a lot that we could write about this. Xavier needs to shoot better than 2-17 behind the arc. They need bench production. They need to not get half of their shots blocked. They need to take care of the ball. All of those things are important and will be factors tonight.
None of it will matter if they allow a 46.5% offensive rebounding rate again. As Joel mentioned above, SJU lives off getting more shots up than their opponents. They do that with a relentless approach to generating second chances. Xavier simply has to stop them from doing that. I say “simply” because the concept is simple, the execution won’t be. Xavier will have to be nearly flawless on the glass.
I said against Villanova that Xavier needed to hold them to around 27% on the offensive glass. They did and they won the game. Two of St. John’s three losses have come in games where their offensive rebounding rate was below 32%. That’s the number for today. Hit that, and a season defining streak stays alive.
Xavier v. St. John’s: Preview, Matchups, Keys to the GameThe Xavier Musketeers will face off against the St. John’s Red Storm in a highly anticipated college basketball matchup. Both teams have had strong seasons so far and are looking to secure a crucial victory in this game. Here’s a preview of the upcoming matchup, key matchups to watch, and keys to the game for both teams:
Preview:
Xavier comes into this game with a 15-4 record and is currently ranked in the top 25. Led by star guard Paul Scruggs, the Musketeers have been playing at a high level on both ends of the court. St. John’s, on the other hand, has a record of 12-6 and is looking to bounce back from a tough loss in their last game. The Red Storm are led by dynamic guard Julian Champagnie, who is one of the top scorers in the nation.Key Matchups:
– Paul Scruggs vs. Julian Champagnie: This matchup between two of the best guards in the country will be crucial in determining the outcome of the game. Both players are capable of taking over a game with their scoring ability and will likely be the focal points of their respective teams’ offenses.
– Xavier’s frontcourt vs. St. John’s perimeter defense: Xavier has a strong frontcourt led by Zach Freemantle, who will look to dominate inside against a smaller St. John’s lineup. The Red Storm will need to use their quickness and perimeter defense to disrupt Xavier’s inside scoring.Keys to the Game:
– Control the tempo: Xavier will look to slow down the pace of the game and play a physical, half-court style of basketball. St. John’s will need to push the pace and use their speed and athleticism to create easy scoring opportunities in transition.
– Limit turnovers: Both teams thrive on forcing turnovers and turning them into points on the other end. Whichever team can take care of the basketball and limit their mistakes will have a significant advantage in this game.Overall, this matchup between Xavier and St. John’s promises to be an exciting and closely contested battle. Both teams have the talent and ability to come out on top, so it will come down to execution and which team can impose their will on the other. Be sure to tune in to see who comes out victorious in this thrilling college basketball showdown.

Both offenses are plenty capable of hanging up big numbers on offense, and the total of 149.5 will be easily eclipsed.

The No. 20 ranked St. John’s Red Storm welcome the Xavier Musketeers to Madison Square Garden tonight.
The Johnnies beat the Musketeers 82-72 when these teams previously clashed two weeks ago, and my Xavier vs. St. John’s predictions are betting on another shootout tonight.
Here are my free college basketball picks for this Big East showdown on January 22.
Xavier vs St. John’s prediction
My best bet
Over 149.5 (-110 at bet365)My analysis
Both schools have highly-rated defenses, but given their offensive firepower and tendency to push the pace, this total seems a tad too low at 149.5.
Keep in mind the St. John’s Red Storm are 12th in the country in average length of possession (15.3 seconds) while the Xavier Musketeers are 59th (16.2 seconds).
When these two previously clashed on January 7, the O/U was set at 152.5, and the Over hit despite both teams combining to shoot just 6-for-34 (17.6%) from deep.
With both sides sitting outside the Top 170 in opponent 3-point percentage and Xavier 27th in 3-point percentage (38.1%), expect positive regression in that area.
Xavier is fresh off a 59-57 upset win on the road against No. 10 Marquette. Despite appearing like a defensive battle, the truth is both teams got open looks but failed to convert. ShotQualityBets modeled the game with a score of 77-74 based on the quality of shots taken and allowed.
The Musketeers average 77.3 points per game despite missing leading scorer Zach Freemantle (16.8 ppg on 51 FG%) for a three-game stretch in December. Xavier’s offense uses excellent ball movement, and the inside-out duo of Freemantle and Ryan Conwell (16.5 ppg on 44/39/82 shooting splits) is tough to stop.
Meanwhile, the Johnnies average 80.6 ppg and have four players averaging double digits in points, led by RJ Luis Jr. and his 17.8 ppg. Expect them to put up plenty of points against a Xavier side that struggles to defend in transition.
Xavier vs St. John’s same-game parlay (SGP)
The Musketeers have lost seven of their last 11 games against high-major foes and this could be a letdown spot after upsetting Marquette on Saturday.
The Johnnies have won nine of their last 10 games overall and have gone a perfect 12-0 at home this season. I’m wary of laying 7.5 points with them, but I’ll push this spread down to -3.5 since I expect them to cover by at least a possession.
St. John’s dominated Xavier on the glass in that previous meeting boasting a +20 rebounding margin. Center Zuby Ejiofor owned the paint with 12 boards in that contest, and he has now grabbed nine or more rebounds in four straight games.
