Is Luka Doncic 230 or 260 pounds? Magic Johnson says new Laker must take ‘conditioning seriously’
Lakers legend Magic Johnson, right, applauded the team’s acquisition of former Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic, but he says Doncic has to take conditioning seriously. (Carolyn Kaster, LM Otero / Associated Press) Magic Johnson is over the moon about the Lakers’ surprise acquisition of former Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic over the weekend.
On Sunday, the Showtime-era legend posted no fewer than seven times on X expressing his pleasure with the transaction and his excitement for the Lakers’ future. Johnson said he “can hardly wait to see Luka in a Lakers jersey in Crypto arena,” that the deal “is amazing for the NBA” and that Doncic “will definitely make the Lakers a championship-contending team.”
He also compared the move to the Dodgers — a team in which Johnson owns a minority stake — signing Japanese phenom Shohei Ohtani before their 2024 World Series championship season.
Johnson did, however, have one tiny critique of sorts aimed at Doncic, tucked at the very end of one of his posts.
“LeBron James will be a positive influence on Luka,” Johnson wrote, “teaching him his championship mentality that includes taking his conditioning seriously.”

Doncic has been named an All-Star in five of his seven NBA seasons. Last year, he finished third in the league’s MVP voting, won the trophy for Western Conference finals MVP (which happens to be named after Johnson) and helped the Mavericks make the NBA Finals.
He is scheduled to be introduced as a Laker on Tuesday morning, days after a blockbuster trade sent him, Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris to L.A. in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie and the Lakers’ 2029 first-round draft pick (the Utah Jazz also received Jalen Hood-Schifino from the Lakers and second-round picks from L.A. and Dallas to facilitate the trade).
The Times reported that Dallas general manager Nico Harrison approached Lakers GM Rob Pelinka about the possibility of a deal. According to ESPN, one of the reasons the Mavericks initiated the talks was “significant frustration within the organization about Doncic’s lack of discipline regarding his diet and conditioning, which team sources considered a major factor in his injury issues.”
The 6-foot-6 Doncic is listed at 230 pounds, but ESPN reports that “his weight ballooned to the high 260s early this season.” He hasn’t played since suffering a calf injury on Christmas.
If there has ever been a role model for the kind of physical commitment needed to achieve consistent greatness, Johnson is correct in noting that it’s James. At age 40 and in his 22nd season, James remains in top condition and is still one of the league’s best players, even after playing more regular-season minutes than anyone in NBA history.

So far, James’ only public comments on the trade have been in appreciation of and well wishes for Davis, with whom he helped the Lakers win their 17th NBA championship in 2020.
“Love you my dog!!” James wrote on his Instagram Stories. “Go crazy over there!”
Johnson also gave high praise to Davis, as well as Christie, in his X comments.
Here’s everything Johnson had to say about one of the biggest trades in league history.
I’ve been associated with the NBA for 45 years and this Luka and AD trade is the biggest trade I’ve seen between two superstars essentially in their prime! With Luka, the Lakers are getting a 25 year old superstar; this is a great long-term move for the Lakers franchise after…
— Earvin Magic Johnson (@MagicJohnson) February 3, 2025
Luka Doncic will definitely make the Lakers a championship-contending team. He’ll take pressure off of LeBron because of his scoring ability and playmaking and will make every Laker better! LeBron James will be a positive influence on Luka, teaching him his championship mentality…
— Earvin Magic Johnson (@MagicJohnson) February 3, 2025
Laker Nation, we have to thank AD for his five and a half seasons including a championship in 2020. AD was having a MVP season which will make Dallas better and he can go back to his natural position of playing the 4.
— Earvin Magic Johnson (@MagicJohnson) February 3, 2025
Max Christie being traded to the Mavericks is going to hurt the Lakers defense, so now Finney-Smith and Vanderbilt will have to step up defensively to fill that void.
— Earvin Magic Johnson (@MagicJohnson) February 3, 2025
You know I love assists, and with LeBron and Luka teaming up, I get to watch two of the best passers that have ever played on the same team! I can hardly wait to see Luka in a Lakers jersey in Crypto arena! Laker Nation, get ready!
— Earvin Magic Johnson (@MagicJohnson) February 3, 2025
Luka Doncic going to the Lakers is amazing for the NBA, just like Shohei Ohtani was when we signed him to the Dodgers! I want to congratulate Lakers Owner Jeanie Buss and GM Rob Pelinka for bringing Luka Doncic to LA to play for our beloved Lakers!
— Earvin Magic Johnson (@MagicJohnson) February 3, 2025
And with this Luka trade, the Lakers definitely need a big man
— Earvin Magic Johnson (@MagicJohnson) February 3, 2025
Usage rate may be a problem for the Lakers because LeBron, Luka, and Austin all love to have the ball in their hands. How will Coach JJ Reddick design an offense that keeps all 3 of them happy?
— Earvin Magic Johnson (@MagicJohnson) February 3, 2025
This story originally appeared in Los Angeles Times.
Luka Doncic, the star player for the Dallas Mavericks, has been the subject of some confusion when it comes to his weight. Some reports have listed him as weighing 230 pounds, while others have stated he is closer to 260 pounds. The debate over his weight has been reignited after Magic Johnson, the former NBA player and current part-owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, made comments about the importance of conditioning for new players. In a recent interview, Magic Johnson emphasized the need for players to take their conditioning seriously in order to perform at their best. He specifically mentioned the importance of maintaining a healthy weight and staying in shape in order to excel on the court. While he did not mention Luka Doncic specifically, his comments have sparked speculation about the young star’s weight and how it may impact his performance.
It’s clear that Magic Johnson believes that conditioning is crucial for success in the NBA, and it will be interesting to see how Luka Doncic responds to these comments. Whether he is 230 pounds or 260 pounds, it is likely that Doncic will need to prioritize his conditioning in order to reach his full potential as a player. Only time will tell how he chooses to approach this aspect of his game.

The Raiders interviewed Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson for their vacant offensive coordinator position, Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reports.
Johnson also interviewed for the Texans’ offensive coordinator job and remains a candidate to replace Bobby Slowik.
The Raiders interviewed Darrell Bevell for the job earlier this week. Bevell worked as Pete Carroll’s offensive coordinator in Seattle from 2011-17 and thus is the favorite for the job.
Johnson went undrafted in 2011 and bounced around the NFL until 2016. He then began an NFL coaching career as the Bill Walsh diversity coaching fellow for the 49ers (2017) and then the Colts (2019).
The Colts hired him as an offensive quality control coach in 2020, and he spent two seasons in that job.
In 2022, the Vikings named him their assistant quarterbacks coach.
DeMeco Ryans hired Johnson in Houston when Ryans was named head coach two years ago, and Johnson oversaw the development of C.J. Stroud.
The Las Vegas Raiders have reportedly interviewed Jerrod Johnson for their offensive coordinator position. Johnson, a former quarterback at Texas A&M, has been making a name for himself in the coaching world after his playing career ended. The Raiders are looking to revamp their offense after a disappointing season, and Johnson could be the fresh perspective they need. Known for his innovative offensive schemes and ability to develop young quarterbacks, Johnson could be the perfect fit to lead the Raiders’ offense to new heights.
Stay tuned for more updates on the Raiders’ coaching search and who they ultimately decide to hire as their offensive coordinator.

Lions and Saints coaches with Ben Johnson ties have been brought in over the course of the last week by the Bears and now it’s a player.
Although free agency doesn’t start until March 10 with the legalized tampering period, former Lions wide receiver Maurice Alexander was signed by the Bears Friday to a futures contract.
A slot receiver type at 5-foot-11, 174 pounds, the 28-year-old from Florida International has been a practice squad player for the Lions who got into seven games total for Detroit over the 2022 and 2024 seasons. He played in the USFL in 2022 before the NFL season and made 20 catches for 234 yards.
He caught only one pass for 7 yards but displayed some special teams ability by averaging 24.3 yards on six kick returns in 2022, with a long of 47 yards. HE also returned four punts this past season for a very healthy 10.5-yard average.
Maurice Alexander would have gotten at least 3 “Whoops” from Chris Berman on that 95-yard punt return for a Touchdown pic.twitter.com/Wd7KlpFHJI
— Erik Schlitt (@erikschlitt) August 12, 2023
The Bears used DeAndre Carter in the return game until a hamstring injury against the 49ers in December. Carter averaged 31.9 yards for 15 kick returns and 9.3 for his 17 punts returned. His kick return average was third-highest in the league for anyone with at least 12 returns.
Carter was working on a one-year contract in 2024.
Can the Lions cut Maurice Alexander during this game…? He’s terrible. #OnePride

The Chicago Bears have made a bold move in free agency by signing former Detroit Lions wide receiver, Breshad Perriman. Perriman, who spent the last season with the Lions, is now set to join the Bears and add depth to their receiving corps. But what makes this signing particularly interesting is the connection between Perriman and Bears offensive coordinator, Ben Johnson. Johnson, who previously worked as the Lions’ tight ends coach, is familiar with Perriman’s skillset and could potentially help him thrive in the Bears’ offense.
With Perriman now on board, Bears fans are eager to see how this new connection between him and Johnson will translate on the field. Will Perriman be able to make an impact and help the Bears’ passing game take a step forward? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure – the Bears are exploring all avenues to improve their roster and compete in the NFC North.

Wide receiver Maurice Alexander follows Ben Johnson, Antwaan Randle El to Chicago
Detroit Lions wide receiver Maurice Alexander (1) runs after makes a catch against Pittsburgh Steelers during the second half of a preseason game at Ford Field in Detroit on Saturday, August 24, 2024. Wide receiver Maurice Alexander signed a reserve/futures contract with the Chicago Bears, per a report from Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 in Houston.
Alexander will join new Bears head coach and former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as well as Antwaan Randle El, who coached wide receivers in Detroit and will do the same while also adding the title of assistant head coach in Chicago. Alexander spent three seasons with the Lions.
Alexander was on the practice squad for the Lions at the end of the season but was not signed to a futures deal by the team, allowing him to sign such a deal elsewhere, even before free agency officially started. He appeared in three games on special teams this season for the Lions, including filling in for an injured Kalif Raymond as a kick and punt returner.

After losing two key wide receivers in free agency, the Chicago Bears have quickly found a replacement in Maurice Alexander. The former standout receiver has agreed to a deal with the Bears, joining former teammates Ben Johnson and Antwaan Randle El in Chicago.Alexander, known for his speed and playmaking ability, will provide a much-needed boost to the Bears’ receiving corps. With Johnson and Randle El already in the fold, the trio of receivers gives Chicago a formidable group of pass catchers for quarterback Justin Fields to target.
Fans are excited to see what this new trio can do on the field and are hopeful that Alexander can help lead the Bears to success in the upcoming season. Former Detroit Lions wide receiver Maurice Alexander has signed a futures deal with the Chicago Bears, according to NFL’s transaction wire. Maurice will reunite with former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who became the Bears head coach last week. He’ll also reconnect with his position coach, as Antwaan Randle El also went to Chicago for a promotion to wide receivers coach/assistant head coach.
Alexander finished the season on the Lions practice squad, and the Lions opted not to sign him to a futures deal. That meant Alexander was a free agent free to sign with any team, even before free agency opens in March.
Alexander, 28, has been on and off the Lions’ roster since 2022. This past year, he made three game appearances, serving as the team’s kick and punt returner when Kalif Raymond spent over a month on injured reserve with a foot injury. Alexander got a total of four punt returns and turned it into 42 yards and a fumble (that was not lost).
Nicknamed “Hard Time,” Alexander may not have gotten many opportunities on the field in his three seasons (seven game appearances), but he had earned a reputation as a hard worker and good teammate. He was one of the many players who Teddy Bridgewater worked out with in and out of the Lions’ training facility.
“He’s been back there just listening. After practice, catching jugs. Walk through, catching jugs, just listening,” Raymond said of Alexander in 2022. “And then as I’m working, he’s working. And a lot people don’t know his story. This dude’s working another job, got a call from the USFL, balls out for the USFL, becomes a Detroit Lion and then finally takes a punt back in the NFL. There’s a lot of work that went in between that moment—the moment had in that game, and a lot of work that went in between that nobody saw. And that dude works his tail off.”
Former Detroit Lions wide receiver Maurice Alexander has signed with the Chicago Bears, reuniting with his former coach Ben Johnson. Johnson, who was previously the Lions’ wide receivers coach, recently joined the Bears as their new offensive coordinator.Alexander, known for his speed and route-running ability, will bring a valuable skill set to the Bears’ receiving corps. With Johnson’s familiarity with Alexander’s playing style and strengths, the duo is set to make a significant impact in Chicago.
Fans are excited to see Alexander’s potential unleashed under Johnson’s guidance, and are hopeful for a successful partnership between the two in the Windy City. Stay tuned for updates on their progress as they gear up for the upcoming season with the Bears. #ChicagoBears #MauriceAlexander #BenJohnson #NFLFreeAgency

Jimmie Johnson doubles down on free throw competition with Shaquille O’Neal, raises stakes
The back-and-forth between Jimmie Johnson and Shaquille O’Neal took another turn Friday. The NASCAR icon fired back at the NBA legend and made a new proposal in their free throw competition.
This all started when O’Neal called out Johnson for trying for the Daytona 500 once again. He will look to make his 22nd appearance in the race, and O’Neal joked about whether 22 years was enough. Johnson said he still has more in the tank, but asked how Shaq’s jump shot is.
The social media spat continued and developed into a free throw competition. O’Neal suggested he’d get to drive Johnson’s Daytona car if he wins. But Johnson took things a step further.
“Oh, classic @SHAQ sliding in my DMs,” Johnson wrote Friday. “Only place you’re driving my car is to dinner. If you win, you can design my Daytona car—how good are you with crayons? If I win, I’ve got some sweet gear for you to rock.”
More on Jimmie Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal’s back-and-forth
O’Neal, of course, wasn’t known much for that jump shot or his efficiency at the charity stripe. He retired as a career 52% free throw shooter but was as dominant a center as anyone has ever seen in the NBA. Without knowing much of his prowess on the hardwood, Johnson has to like his chances against O’Neal — in a free throw competition, that is.
O’Neal, of course, retired from the NBA in 2011 and is a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. He’s also a staple of TNT’s Inside The NBA, which will move to ESPN next season as part of a sublicensing agreement.
Johnson, meanwhile, made his Daytona 500 debut in 2002 and has two victories to his name. But at 49 years old, he’s racing a more limited schedule.
As part of his announcement, he also released his 2025 schedule. It only includes a second race in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte. If he qualifies in both races, Charlotte will be his 700th Cup Series start. Carvana will serve as the sponsor for Johnson, and he will be back in the No. 84 for his team, Legacy Motor Club.
Johnson, who co-owns Legacy alongside Maury Gallagher, has competed in 12 races over the last two seasons, making nine starts in 2024. His best finish was a P26 result in the last season’s finale at Phoenix. Johnson has an average finish of 31.8.
Seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson is not backing down from his latest challenge against basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal. After their intense free throw competition went viral on social media, Johnson has decided to raise the stakes and double down on their friendly rivalry. In a recent interview, Johnson revealed that he and Shaq have agreed to a rematch on the basketball court, but this time with even higher stakes. Not only will the loser have to wear the other’s jersey during a NASCAR race, but they have also decided to donate $10,000 to charity in the winner’s name.
“I’m not one to back down from a challenge, especially when it comes to competing against a legend like Shaq,” Johnson said. “I may not be able to dunk like him, but I’ll do whatever it takes to come out on top in this free throw competition.”
The NASCAR superstar has been putting in extra practice on the basketball court in preparation for the rematch, determined to show that he has what it takes to outshoot the 7’1″ basketball icon.
Fans are eagerly awaiting the results of this epic showdown between two sports greats, eager to see who will come out on top and claim bragging rights in this unique cross-sport rivalry. Stay tuned for updates on the Johnson vs. O’Neal free throw competition!

NASCAR legend Jimmie Johnson and Shaquille O’Neal have taken their friendly rivalry to the next level with a new challenge. The well-known NASCAR driver and the towering NBA star have enjoyed some light-hearted exchanges over the years, but things really picked up on Friday.
What started with O’Neal’s good-natured teasing about Johnson’s persistent attempts at the Daytona 500 quickly turned into a challenge.

The roots of this humorous feud trace back to O’Neal’s remarks about Johnson’s long history with the Daytona 500, having made 22 attempts.

O’Neal, who is not one to shy away from making his thoughts known, wondered aloud if Johnson might be overdoing it a little. Johnson, unfazed and ever the competitor, took it in stride and even jabbed back at the NBA star by questioning his skills on the basketball court.
Turning up the heat, O’Neal threw down the gauntlet with a free-throw shooting challenge, poking fun at his career average of 52% from the line, and proposed an unusual wager. If O’Neal managed to win this friendly competition, he would earn the right to get behind the wheel of Johnson’s Daytona car. In classic Johnson fashion, he quickly responded with a counteroffer.

O’Neal suggests taking Johnson’s car for a spin, but Johnson had his own idea if he won. He posted:
“Oh, classic @SHAQ sliding in my DMs. Only place you’re driving my car is to dinner. If you win, you can design my Daytona car—how good are you with crayons? If I win, I’ve got some sweet gear for you to rock.”

Jeff Haynes/NBAE via Getty Images
The Atlanta Hawks reportedly may turn to the New Orleans Pelicans to find a replacement for Jalen Johnson after the forward suffered a season-ending shoulder injury.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst (1:20 mark) reported on Friday that there has been “a little bit of a warmup” regarding trade talks involving Brandon Ingram.
“Specifically, keep an eye on the Atlanta Hawks,” he said. “They just lost their star wing Jalen Johnson for the season, they may start to get interested in making a move especially for Brandon Ingram. Keep an eye on that.”
This has been a season to forget for the Pelicans, who entered with expectations of a playoff run but instead sit in 14th place in the Western Conference standings at 12-36 thanks in large part to injuries.
Ingram is scheduled for free agency after the season and could leave anyway, so it would make sense that New Orleans would be interested in trading him.
It might not be a long-term rebuild with Zion Williamson as the franchise player, so any assets the front office could get in an Ingram deal could help the Pelicans return to competitive form as soon as next season.
And Atlanta is battling for position in the Eastern Conference standings. It is 22-26 and in ninth place, which would put it in the play-in tournament if it cannot make up the two-game deficit on the sixth-seeded Miami Heat.
Losing Johnson will make that playoff battle all the more difficult, although Ingram would be a solid replacement.
The biggest question mark with the Duke product is health, as he has played just 18 games this season and last appeared in a contest on Dec. 7 thanks to an ankle injury.
Ingram has been effective when he does play and is averaging 22.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5.2 assists a night while shooting 46.5 percent from the field and 37.4 percent from deep. Pairing him with Trae Young could make the Hawks dangerous in a play-in or playoff situation, although the front office will have to decide how much it is willing to give up given the team’s position in the standings.
As for the Pelicans, getting something back in return before he potentially leaves in free agency would make sense.
The Atlanta Hawks have been linked to New Orleans Pelicans star Brandon Ingram following a recent injury to rookie Jalen Johnson. With Johnson expected to miss significant time, the Hawks are reportedly exploring potential trade options to bolster their roster.Ingram, a versatile forward who can score from all three levels, would provide a much-needed offensive boost for the Hawks. The 24-year-old is averaging 21.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game this season, and his ability to create his own shot would make him a valuable addition to Atlanta’s lineup.
While no formal trade talks have been reported yet, the Hawks are believed to be keeping a close eye on Ingram’s situation in New Orleans. With the Pelicans struggling this season and facing tough decisions regarding their roster, a trade involving Ingram could be a possibility.
Stay tuned for more updates on the Brandon Ingram trade rumors and how they could potentially impact both the Hawks and Pelicans. Stay connected with us for the latest news, scores, highlights, stats, and rumors surrounding this developing story.

Jordana Brewster‘s Fast and Furious family has its ups and downs, just like any other family.
While Brewster, 44, promoted her new movie Heart Eyes during a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, the actress briefly addressed her Fast costars Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson‘s viral Golden Globes moment on Jan. 5. When presenting at the awards ceremony, Diesel, 57, shouted out Johnson, 52, after years of reports that the two actors didn’t get along.
“I think what’s so fun about — when we keep talking about family, Fast is about family,” she said. “Families are also dysfunctional, and we’ve got the drama and we’ve got — so I think the franchise echoes that.”
Diesel, who brought Johnson into the Fast and Furious franchise with 2011’s Fast Five, has been rumored to feud with the WWE star-turned-actor dating back to 2016, when Johnson shared a lengthy, now-deleted Instagram post in which he called out some of his male costars after filming The Fate of the Furious, without naming names.

Johnson eventually took a break from the franchise in 2021, but made a cameo at the very end of 2023’s Fast X, leaving fans hopeful that he’ll reprise his role as Luke Hobbs in the franchise’s next — and potentially final — film. Diesel himself responded to the viral moment he created at the Golden Globes, when he shared a 2011 photo of himself and Johnson together on Instagram and wrote, “All love… Always…” in a caption.

“Vin’s so invested in the franchise and so creative that things are always bubbling up and then we’ll be on text changes and it’s wonderful l to see the beginning versus what ends up there,” Brewster said elsewhere in her interview with ET, when asked about Diesel’s work on the upcoming Fast X: Part 2. “And I’m being as vague as possible so as to not give anything [away.]”
