E-commerce firms, apparel makers, convenience store chains and food companies have joined efforts to donate winter supplies and daily necessities to the bereaved families of the Jeju Air plane crash victims at Muan International Airport in South Jeolla Province, while scaling back their traditional New Year marketing campaigns.
Lotte World Tower is lit up in white in Seoul, Tuesday, to express condolences to the victims of the Jeju Air plane crash at Muan International Airport in South Jeolla Province. Yonhap
Coupang delivered hand warmers, face masks, toothbrushes and toothpaste to the airport via the South Jeolla provincial government on Tuesday, two days after the accident that claimed 179 lives.
The e-commerce firm also decided to refrain from promoting its regular New Year discount event.
Black Yak Kang Tae Sun Financial Aid Foundation, a charity founded by the outdoor clothing brand, said Monday that it had sent 200 down jackets worth around 100 million won ($68,000) for the bereaved families and volunteer workers at the airport.
“We decided to provide emergency support (in the form of) clothing to express our condolences and offer some relief in this cold weather,” BYN Black Yak Group CEO Kang Tae-sun said.
Korea Seven, a Lotte Group subsidiary running 7-Eleven convenience stores in Korea, dispatched its employee supervising franchisees in North and South Jeolla provinces to the Muan International Airport branch to support the distribution of daily necessities to the bereaved families, volunteer workers and government officials at the site.
The convenience store has provided them with unlimited access to energy bars, tissues, instant rice, and cup noodles.
Other Lotte affiliates mourned the victims by pausing their year-end events and New Year marketing campaigns.
Lotte Property & Development canceled a New Year countdown event at Lotte World Tower and lit the skyscraper with white light to express condolences. Lotte Department Store also decided not to advertise its New Year discount event.
GS Retail, which operates GS25 convenience stores nationwide, announced that it has been determining the essential supplies required by the bereaved families and volunteer workers at the airport.
A notice at Ediya Coffee’s Muan International Airport branch in South Jeolla Province reads, Tuesday, that a person preordered and paid for 100 cups of americano and 100 cups of latte for the bereaved families of the Jeju Air plane crash victims and volunteer workers. Joint Press Corps
Ediya Coffee, which began 24-hour operations at its Muan International Airport branch after the accident, preordered and paid for beverages, mineral water and snacks for the bereaved families and volunteer workers. Anonymous donors also preordered and paid for cups of coffee.
The coffee shop chain explained that the initial payments were made because the franchise headquarters cannot compel franchisees to offer free beverages.
“The prepayment was made to align with the goodwill of our customers,” the company said without revealing the specific amount it paid.
SPC Group, the company behind Paris Baguette bakery chains, sent 1,000 bottles of mineral water to the airport for the volunteer workers.
HD Hyundai Samho, which has its shipyard in South Jeolla Province, donated 300 million won to the Community Chest of Korea to support the bereaved families.
In a heartwarming show of solidarity and compassion, South Korean retailers have come together to support the bereaved families of the victims of the recent Jeju Air plane crash. In a joint effort, these retailers have decided to pause their New Year promotions and instead focus on providing assistance and comfort to those who have lost their loved ones in this tragic incident. The decision to suspend their promotional activities was made as a gesture of respect and empathy towards the families who are grieving the loss of their dear ones. The retailers have also pledged to donate a portion of their sales proceeds towards the relief efforts for the affected families.
This collective effort by the South Korean retailers is a shining example of how communities can come together in times of adversity to support one another. It serves as a reminder of the importance of compassion and solidarity in the face of tragedy.
As we mourn the loss of the victims of the Jeju Air plane crash, let us also take a moment to appreciate the kindness and generosity of these retailers who have extended a helping hand to those in need. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families during this difficult time.

‘Shark Tank’ star Kevin O’Leary says half of Canadians favor Trump’s proposal for Canada to join the US
Canadian investor and “Shark Tank” star Kevin O’Leary said Thursday that he wants to help broker a deal with President-elect Donald Trump that would create some sort of “economic union” between the US and Canada – declaring that at least half of his countrymen would support such a merger.
O’Leary’s interest in unifying the US and Canada comes after Trump, 78, has repeatedly suggested in recent weeks that Canada should become “our 51st State.”
“Canadians over the holidays – the last two days – have been talking about this,” O’Leary said of Trump’s proposal, during an interview with Fox Business. “They want to hear more.”
O’Leary indicated that he will travel to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate to discuss his proposal to merge Canada with the US. Gustavo Caballero/CNBC The Montreal-born businessman acknowledged “there’s obviously a lot of issues” that would arise if Canada attempted to join the US but said Trump’s interest in the matter “could be the beginning of an economic union.”
“Think about the power of combining the two economies, erasing the border between Canada and the United States and putting all that resource up to the northern borders where China and Russia are knocking on the door,” O’Leary continued.
“So secure [the northern territories], give a common currency, figure out taxes across the board, get everything trading both ways, create a new, almost EU-like passport – I like this idea and at least half of Canadians are interested,” he asserted.
O’Leary, 70, noted that a major impediment right now is the “collapsing” Canadian government under Liberal Party Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who is very likely to resign or be voted out of office by October 2025.
Trump — who thinks Canada has been ripping off the US over trade — has been taunting Trudeau for weeks by referring to Canada as a prospective US “state” and the prime minister as its “governor.”
Trump reportedly suggested to Justin Trudeau that Canada should join the United States, noting that he could be “governor” of Canada. AP Trump has threatened to impose new tariffs on Canada when he takes office next month. AP “Nobody wants Trudeau to negotiate this deal,” O’Leary argued. “I don’t want him doing it for me. So I’m going to go to Mar-A-Lago. I’ll start the narrative.”
“The 41 million Canadians, I think most of them would trust me on this deal.”
In a Christmas Day Truth Social Post, Trump argued that Canada should become a US state because the taxes of its citizens “are far too high.”
The president-elect declared that “if Canada was to become our 51st State, their Taxes would be cut by more than 60%.”
Trump also asserted that Canadian businesses also “would immediately double in size, and they would be militarily protected like no other Country anywhere in the World” if the Great White North was to join the US.
In a recent interview, ‘Shark Tank’ star Kevin O’Leary made a controversial statement claiming that half of Canadians actually support President Trump’s proposal for Canada to join the United States. O’Leary, known for his outspoken opinions and business acumen, argued that merging Canada with the US would bring economic benefits and strengthen both countries’ positions on the global stage. While O’Leary’s remarks have sparked debate and criticism from many Canadians who staunchly oppose the idea of joining the US, his comments highlight the growing divide within the country over its relationship with its southern neighbor. As tensions between Canada and the US continue to escalate, O’Leary’s statement serves as a reminder of the complex political landscape that both countries navigate.
What are your thoughts on Kevin O’Leary’s statement? Do you believe that Canada should consider joining the US, or do you think it’s an unrealistic and impractical proposal? Share your opinions in the comments below. #SharkTank #KevinOLeary #CanadaUSRelations

Financial giants Citigroup and Bank of America (BofA) have decided to exit the Net-Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA), a UN-backed coalition of banks dedicated to advancing global net zero goals through their financing activities, marking an acceleration in departures from the group, following similar recent announcements from Goldman Sachs and Wells Fargo.
Launched in 2021 – with Citi and BofA as founding members – the Net-Zero Banking Alliance is a coalition of more than 140 banks spanning 44 countries. Members of the NZBA commit to transitioning operational and attributable greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from their financing activities to align with net zero pathways by 2050, and to set 2030 financed emissions targets, initially focused on key emissions intensive sectors.
The NZBA forms part of the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ), a UN-backed umbrella group of net zero-focused financial sector coalitions, which also includes the Net Zero Asset Managers initiative (NZAM), Net Zero Asset Owner Alliance (NZAOA), Net Zero Financial Service Providers Alliance (NZFSPA), the Net Zero Investment Consultants Initiative (NZICI), the Paris Aligned Asset Owners (PAAO), the Venture Climate Alliance (VCA), and the Net-Zero Export Credit Agencies Alliance (NZECA).
After rapid expansion in the early years of the decade, members of the various GFANZ groups have come under significant pressure, particularly from Republican politicians in the U.S., who have been warning financial institutions including banks, insurers, asset owners and investors of potential legal violations from their participation in climate-focused alliances and of plans to exclude the companies from state business, as part of a broader anti-ESG political campaign.
Several of the groups have seen high-profile departures over the past several months, with one of the coalitions, the Net Zero Insurance Alliance (NZIA), even disbanding in 2024 following a string of exits.
Citi announced a commitment in early 2021, on the first day of Jane Fraser’s tenure as CEO, to a 2050 net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) financing target, and the bank has followed up with interim targets for financed emissions reductions for key emissions-intensive sectors, such as energy and power. In a statement published announcing its decision to leave the group, Citi reiterated its commitment to reach net zero, and pledged to support GFANZ in its new focus on “mobilizing capital to emerging markets in support of the low-carbon transition.” Citi stated:
“In light of this shift, and Citi’s progress towards its own net zero goals, we have decided to leave the Net Zero Banking Alliance and focus our attention on supporting GFANZ during this new phase.”
Bank of America’s net zero finance goal also dates to early 2021, and the bank has also set a series of financed emissions reduction targets for key sectors. In a publication in late September 2024, the bank reiterated its goal to achieve net zero in its financing, operations and supply chain by 2050, and set new financed emissions targets for the Iron & Steel and Maritime Shipping sectors.
Both Citi and Bank of America remain as members of the GFANZ Principals Group, which sets the strategic direction and priorities for GFANZ, and monitors progress.
In a surprising move, Citi and Bank of America have announced their decision to leave the Net Zero Banking Alliance, following in the footsteps of Goldman Sachs and Wells Fargo. This move comes as a blow to the coalition of banks committed to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.The departure of these major financial institutions raises questions about the future of the alliance and its ability to effectively address climate change. With four of the largest banks in the U.S. now out of the group, the remaining members will need to reassess their strategy and goals moving forward.
It remains to be seen what impact this exodus will have on the banking industry’s efforts to combat climate change. Will other banks follow suit and leave the alliance, or will new members step up to take their place? Only time will tell. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

Simone Biles & Jordan Chiles Join Gymnastics Community to Bid Farewell to the Year 2024
To say 2024 was an outstanding year for USA Gymnastics would be an understatement. After the lackluster performance at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics due to Simone Biles’s debilitating bout of twisties, the entire squad was looking for redemption in Paris, and that’s exactly what they got. The grand finale of Biles’ redemption brought success for everyone in Team USA.
Now, the Olympics icon looking back at a stellar year the 27-year-old started as the defending world champion and ended as a three-time Paris Olympics gold medalist. After Tokyo 2020, Biles nearly drove herself to quit gymnastics. “I thought America hated me,” she confessed ahead of Paris 2024. However, after how things turned out, the Olympian couldn’t help but feel gratitude.
“Thank you, 2024,” wrote Simone Biles in her Instagram post. The gymnastics icon lay on the floor, surrounded by flowers and all seven of her Olympic medals. However, the defending world champion wasn’t the only one who looked back at 2024 with fond memories. Biles’ World Champions Center buddy and fellow Olympic gold medalist Jordan Chiles shared Team USA’s post.
“Leaving 2024 with a lot more hardware,” wrote the official Team USA Instagram handle. Chiles shared the image of herself posing with the Paris 2024 team all-around gold medal that Team USA had shared among many others. And while the bronze medal controversy caused the Olympian considerable distress, she chose to focus on the best part of her year.
Meanwhile, Simone Biles’ teammate Sunisa Lee bid farewell to 2024 in her way. Struggling with a chronic kidney issue, Lee had a hard time training but persevered to succeed at the U.S. Olympic trials and made it to Paris. While she couldn’t defend her all-around Olympic crown, Lee made a significant contribution to Team USA.
“2024 easily started as one of the hardest years but turned out to be one of the best years!! Truly so grateful for every opportunity and all the amazing people this year brought me. Here’s to 2025,” wrote the 21-year-old. And finally, we come to Cecile Landi, the woman who coached them all to glory at Paris 2024. Landi shared “24 pictures to say goodbye to 2024,” with Biles taking center stage among her athletes. However, the Olympian didn’t skip giving her coach her much-deserved flowers.
Simone Biles celebrated the women who made 2024 special
While Simone Biles was thankful for the success she saw in 2024, the Olympian made a separate post to celebrate the women who made it possible. The Olympic legend posted an image from the premiere of Simone Biles Rising Part II, where she posed alongside Landi and Team USA physician Marcia Faustin. She didn’t hesitate to praise the women in her post.
“Before the year ends, I wanna highlight these 2 ladies,” Simone Biles explained in her post. “Thanks for keeping me sane this year and making sure I never gave up on my dreams. Much love,” added the seven-time Olympic gold medalist. While Landi helped her pupil focus during practice and in competition, Faustin helped Biles stay on top physically and mentally off the mat.
So as the year came to an end, Biles hoped to make it clear that Cecile Landi was an integral part of her success. In fact, this isn’t the first or the only time the gymnast has praised her coach. When the 45-year-old left WCC to pursue her dream of coaching a college gymnastics team, Biles supported her long-time coach without hesitation.
“Simone was the first one to tell me: I’m so happy for you. You need to go.” Cecile Landi told the Washington Post in August 2024. So while Simone Biles celebrated the conclusion of an outstanding year alongside the community, she didn’t forget to celebrate the people who made it special.
As 2024 comes to a close, two of the most beloved gymnasts in the world, Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles, have joined the gymnastics community to bid farewell to the year in style. The dynamic duo, who have captured the hearts of fans around the globe with their incredible talent and infectious personalities, took to social media to share their thoughts on the past year and their hopes for the future.Simone Biles, the GOAT of women’s gymnastics, reflected on the challenges and triumphs she faced in 2024, from her historic performance at the Olympics to her advocacy for mental health awareness. She expressed gratitude for the love and support of her fans, and vowed to continue pushing boundaries and inspiring others in the years to come.
Jordan Chiles, Biles’ teammate and close friend, also shared her reflections on the year, highlighting her own growth and accomplishments both in and out of the gym. She thanked her supporters for standing by her through thick and thin, and promised to keep working hard and chasing her dreams in 2025 and beyond.
Together, Biles and Chiles sent a powerful message of resilience, determination, and unity to the gymnastics community, reminding us all of the strength and beauty that can be found in coming together to celebrate our shared love for the sport. As we say goodbye to 2024 and look ahead to the future, let us carry their words of inspiration with us, and continue to support and uplift each other in the years to come. Cheers to a bright and promising future for gymnastics in 2025!

Dear everyone,
I’m writing to share the happy news that two of Washington’s most accomplished and authoritative reporters, Ashley Parker and Michael Scherer, are joining The Atlantic as part of our effort to deepen our coverage of the incoming administration, and of America’s tumultuous politics more generally.
Ashley and Michael, who both come to us from The Washington Post, have distinguished themselves as scoop-driven stylists—they are both relentless, well-sourced reporters with a keen sense of language and narrative, and a deep belief in the importance of accountability journalism. They will make great additions to our already excellent politics team. As we move into 2025, it is vitally important for us to cover Washington—the implementation of the MAGA agenda; the role of money (foreign and domestic) in our politics; the future of the Democratic Party—in the most comprehensive and rigorous way possible, and Ashley and Michael will play important roles in helping us meet our goals.
Ashley, the Post’s senior national political correspondent, is a three-time Pulitzer Prize winner who covered Donald Trump’s first term, and covered the Biden administration as White House bureau chief. Before her time at the Post, she spent 11 years at The New York Times, where she covered the 2012 and 2016 presidential campaigns and Congress, among other subjects. (She got her professional start at the Times as Maureen Dowd’s research assistant, and before that she served as a reporter and an editor at the world’s greatest college newspaper.) Ashley was part of the Post team that won a Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting in 2018, for coverage of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. She was also a member of the team that won the Pulitzer for Public Service in 2022, for its coverage of the causes, costs, and aftermath of the January 6 siege of the Capitol. And she was part of the Post team that won a Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting in 2024, for their coverage of the role the AR-15 plays in American culture.
Michael has been a national political reporter at the Post since 2017, focusing on campaigns and elections. Most recently, he covered the Republican presidential primaries and the inner workings of the Trump, Biden, Harris, and Kennedy campaigns. Michael’s decision to join The Atlantic represents a kind of homecoming; he is a magazine writer at heart, having previously worked at Time, first as a campaign reporter beginning in 2007, before becoming the White House correspondent and later Washington bureau chief. He wrote more than 20 cover stories for the magazine, including two Person of the Year stories, and interviewed Trump six times. Before joining Time, Michael served as the Washington correspondent for Salon, the Washington correspondent for Mother Jones, and an assistant editor at the Columbia Journalism Review. He began his career as a reporter for the Daily Hampshire Gazette in Northampton, Mass., covering local schools and city government. Michael has served on the board of the White House Correspondents’ Association, and won the National Press Club’s Lee Walczak Award for Political Excellence for his article on the 2012 Obama reelection effort, and the 2014 New York Press Club Award for Political Coverage for a cover story on the 2013 government shutdown.
Please join me in welcoming Ashley and Michael to The Atlantic.
Best wishes for a happy new year,
Jeff

#Ashley #Parker #Michael #Scherer #Join #AtlanticPost Malone and Zach Top Join Forces for a Stunning Cover of Vince Gill’s “Don’t Let Our Love Start Slippin’ Away”
Post Malone and Zach Top don’t exactly have much in common, especially appearance-wise. Unless the latter is hiding a bunch of tattoos somewhere, at least. Zach Top has been making waves for reviving traditional country music. Meanwhile, Post Malone famously converted to country-pop stardom with his recent country album.
Sometimes, opposites attract… though we wouldn’t exactly call these two opposites. Top and Malone have the same passion for country music in slightly different forms, and they recently collaborated on an excellent performance of Vince Gill’s famous 1992 country hit “Don’t Let Our Love Start Slippin’ Away”.
Malone is no stranger to a solid cover of a classic country song, considering he’s delivered renditions of songs by Hank Williams and others. Top, obviously, is as connected to the classics as anyone. He’s covered “Sold” by John Michael Montgomery and “Mama Tried” by Merle Haggard alongside Riley Green.
Zach Top and Post Malone Stun Audiences With Cover of “Don’t Let Our Love Start Slippin’ Away” by Vince Gill
Yesterday, the two country stars decided to surprise a crowd with an excellent team-up during Wild Horses Festival in San Diego, California. Red solo cups in hand, the two sang their hearts out and sounded absolutely incredible together. You can watch a fan clip of the performance below:
Outside of the live collab, neotraditional trailblazer Top has even joked about how the duo are considered “rising stars” in the world of country music, along with a lukewarm joke about Beyonce.
“Me and Post Malone, bringing country back…” said Top in a recent video clip. “Me, him and Beyonce.”
It would honestly be awesome to hear more 90s classic country covers from these two. Malone even covered “I Never Lie” by Top recently at Flora-Bama, so we wouldn’t be surprised if more collaborations were on the way.
So, what have these two been up to separately? Malone dropped F-1 Trillion earlier this year and will be touring mostly non-stop through 2025 for the Big Ass Stadium Tour. Top also dropped his debut album, Cold Beer & Country Music, earlier in 2024. Top will tour extensively through 2025 as well.

TAMPA, Fla. — Thirteen members of Michigan football’s incoming freshman class joined the team on the trip down to Florida this week.
The recruits, all of whom are enrolling early for the winter term, are on hand in Tampa as the Wolverines continue preparations for their ReliaQuest Bowl game Tuesday vs. No. 11 Alabama (Noon, ESPN).
The list includes five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood, whose arm was on full display over the weekend during practice, and several high-profile names. Many of them began practicing with Michigan earlier in the month, permitted under NCAA rules, and were invited to join the team on the bowl trip.
In addition to Underwood, the list — confirmed by team spokesman Dave Ablauf — includes five-star offensive tackle Andrew Babalola (Overland Park, Kan.) and four-star cornerback Shamari Earls (Chester, Va.). Babalola was Michigan’s second five-star prospect in the class, while Earls flipped his commitment from Georgia to Michigan.
Also in Tampa is four-star wide receiver Andrew Marsh and four-star linebacker Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng. Owusu-Boateng, who prepped at IMG Academy in nearby Bradenton, has been on hand for practices but has not suited up. He’s expected to play in the Under Armour high school all-star game on Thursday in DeLand, Fla., near Orlando.
The practices, both in Ann Arbor and here in Tampa, are ideal acclimation periods for the early-enrollee freshmen. They learn the ins and outs of a college practice, schedule and expectations. A few weeks ago, quarterback Davis Warren joked that he and others had to help Underwood find his helmet.
And while the newcomers are allowed to practice, they are not permitted to suit up and play in the bowl game. They will have to wait another year.
The full list of Michigan’s early-enrolled freshmen in Tampa:
• OL Andrew Babalola: 6-6, 300 pounds, Overland Park, Kan.
• WR Jamar Browder: 6-5, 208, Lake Worth, Fla.
• DB Shamari Earls: 6-2, 203, Chester, Va.

Trump hails Florida Dem’s decision to ditch party, join GOP: ‘THANK YOU HILLARY!’
President-elect Donald Trump congratulated and thanked Florida state Rep. Hillary Cassel after the Sunshine State lawmaker announced her decision to dump her Democratic Party affiliation and join the GOP.
“Today, I am announcing my decision to change my party affiliation from Democrat to Republican,” Cassel said in a statement. “I will be joining the Republican Conference of the Florida House of Representatives because I believe in their vision for a better, more prosperous Florida.”
In a statement hailing the move, Trump urged more Democrats to defect.

“Congratulations to Hillary Cassel for becoming the second State Representative from the Great State of Florida to switch her Party affiliation from Democrat to Republican, once more expanding the GOP Supermajority in the State House! I would further like to invite other Disillusioned Democrats to switch Parties, and join us on this noble quest to Save our Country and, Make America Great Again – GREATER THAN EVER BEFORE. THANK YOU HILLARY!” Trump exclaimed in a Truth Social post.
Cassel’s announcement came after fellow Florida state Rep. Susan Valdés announced earlier this month that she was switching her registration from Democrat to Republican.
While seeking office in 2022, Cassel described herself as a “proud Democrat,” “pro-choice champion,” and “faithful ally of the LGBTQ+ community.”

She also pledged that she would “stand up to #ClimateChange deniers” and “stand up to the NRA and fight for a ban on military style assault rifles and the high capacity ammunition that make them so lethal.”
But now Cassel says the Democratic Party does not reflect her values.
“As a mother, I want to help build a world where our children are judged on their character and their actions not on their labels,” she noted in her statement. “As a proud Jewish woman, I have been increasingly troubled by the Democratic Party’s failure to unequivocally support Israel and its willingness to tolerate extreme progressive voices that justify or condone acts of terrorism. I’m constantly troubled by the inability of the current Democratic Party to relate to everyday Floridians. I can no longer remain in a party that doesn’t represent my values.

“I know I won’t always agree on every detail with every Republican, but I do know that I will always have input, collaboration, and respect. The House Republican Conference empowers members to find common sense solutions to real issues facing all Floridians. They welcome different ideas and collaboration, which is the cornerstone of effective government. Those are my values,” Cassel noted.
President Trump took to Twitter today to praise Florida Democratic congressional candidate Omar Smith for his decision to leave the Democratic party and join the Republican party. In his tweet, Trump wrote: “THANK YOU HILLARY! Another Democrat sees the light and joins the winning team. Welcome to the GOP, Omar Smith!”
Smith, who is running for Congress in Florida’s 15th district, announced his decision to switch parties earlier this week, citing the Democratic party’s shift towards socialism and far-left policies as his reason for leaving.
Trump’s tweet comes as no surprise, as he has long been critical of the Democratic party and has made efforts to court disaffected Democrats to join the Republican party. Smith’s decision is seen as a significant win for the GOP in a crucial swing state like Florida.
The move also highlights the growing divide within the Democratic party, as more moderate members feel alienated by the party’s leftward shift. It remains to be seen how Smith’s decision will impact the upcoming election, but for now, Trump is reveling in the victory. #Florida #GOP #Democrats #Trump #OmarSmith
