Steelers Running Back Joined Elite Company Despite Uncertain Future

Najee Harris might be the most polarizing player on the Pittsburgh Steelers. Some fans love him, and some fans hate him. He doesn’t have Jaylen Warren’s burst, but he possesses some traits that many running backs don’t. Fans who expected Harris to be a long, breakaway runner should only have themselves to blame. He’s not that and never has been that, even at Alabama.

Steelers Running Back Joins Elite Company

By hitting the 1,000-yard mark in week 17 against the Chiefs, Harris became the fifth running back in NFL history to reach 1,000 yards in his first four seasons. He joins NFL legends Ladanian Tomlinson, Adrian Peterson, Clinton Portis, and Chris Johnson as the only running backs to achieve the feat. Those guys are legends in NFL circles, yet Harris gets massively disrespected.

With the help of his sidekick Jaylen Warren, Harris has positioned himself at a table full of NFL legends. The two are a great one-two punch, but the Steelers have looming contract decisions for both. Pittsburgh didn’t pick up Harris’ fifth-year option, which they may regret now.

    Thriving In A Bad Environment

Stepping back to look at Harris’s thriving environment is essential. Since he arrived in Pittsburgh, the offensive line has been atrocious. It’s a bottom-of-league unit. A defensive lineman gets to him on most of his touches before he’s even back to the line of scrimmage. He dealt with the terroristic offensive playcalling of Matt Canada. When a player is fighting those odds, gathering over 4,000 yards in your first four seasons is impressive.

The Steelers put Harris to work on day one. In his rookie season, Harris led the NFL in touches with 381. He rushed for 1,200 yards and caught 74 passes for 467 yards, finding the endzone 10 times. He made the Pro Bowl, was named to the NFL’s All-Rookie team, and finished fourth in the NFL in rushing yards and all-purpose yards. Harris thrived in the passing game with an old Ben Roethlisberger. Since he retired, his targets have fallen off a cliff.

Harris didn’t lead the league in touches in his sophomore season but was still a workhorse. He rushed the ball 2272 times for 1,034 yards and caught 41 passes for 229 yards. He once again scored 10 touchdowns with seven on the ground and three in the air, just like his rookie season. By this time, it was apparent that the Steelers had a bell-cow running back.

Last season was much the same for Harris. His third season saw him get 255 rush attempts for 1,035 yards and eight touchdowns. He also caught 29 passes for 170 yards. Jaylen Warren has taken the receiving plays off of Harris’ plate. The two turned into the perfect one-two punch. Harris is the big bruiser, and Warren is the speedy back. They’re a generic version of the room they have in Detroit.

With one game left in 2024, Harris has already eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark. He has 251 rush attempts for 1,007 yards and five touchdowns entering the week 18 matchup with the Bengals, a team he loves playing against. He has scored six touchdowns in seven games against Cincinnati, and it’s a big game for Pittsburgh. The addition of Russell Wilson has caused Harris to see a slight uptick in receptions, catching 32 passes for 263 yards.

    End Of Rant

The most impressive part of Harris’ resume is that he hasn’t missed a single game through four seasons as an NFL running back. A running back’s job is to get into 20 car crashes a week. Harris absorbs all of it and keeps going. Through just four seasons as a Steeler, Harris sits sixth in franchise history in rushing yards, seventh in rushing touchdowns, and sixth in rushing yards per game.

He’s only fumbled the ball five times in 1,261 touches. The guy is durable and secure. Pittsburgh would be silly to let him walk away, but as it creeps closer to the time, the more likely it becomes that Harris plays in another jersey next season. It would be wise for the Steelers to devise a way to keep him and let him continue chasing down the franchise records of Franco Harris and LeVeon Bell.

The Pittsburgh Steelers running back, Najee Harris, has recently joined elite company despite facing an uncertain future with the team. Harris has been putting up impressive numbers in his rookie season, showcasing his talent and potential to become one of the top running backs in the league.

Despite the Steelers’ struggles this season, Harris has been a bright spot for the team. He has rushed for over 1,000 yards and has shown his versatility as a pass-catching back as well. His ability to make defenders miss and break tackles has made him a valuable asset to the Steelers’ offense.

Harris’ performance has not gone unnoticed, as he recently joined elite company by becoming just the third rookie in Steelers history to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season. He joins the likes of Franco Harris and Le’Veon Bell in achieving this milestone, solidifying his place in Steelers history.

However, despite his impressive rookie campaign, there are still questions surrounding Harris’ future with the team. With the Steelers in a rebuilding phase and facing salary cap constraints, there is uncertainty about whether Harris will remain with the team long term.

Regardless of what the future holds, one thing is certain – Najee Harris has proven himself to be a force to be reckoned with in the NFL. His performance this season has put him in elite company and has shown that he has the potential to be a top running back in the league for years to come. Steelers fans can only hope that Harris will continue to shine in black and gold for years to come.
