  • Robert Pattinson Takes Korea By Storm As He Joins Bong Joon Ho In Seoul For First ‘Mickey 17’ Press Event

Bong Joon Ho and Robert Pattinson kicked off the long-awaited launch of Mickey 17 with the first official press event for the movie in the Korean capital of Seoul on Monday.

Korean director Bong’s first feature since his 2019 Cannes Palme d’Or and quadruple Oscar winner Parasite, the sci-fi drama has been a long time coming, with the shoot having wrapped in December 2022.

    More from Deadline

Having been originally scheduled for a March 29, 2024 release, the film will now world premiere at the Berlinale in February, ahead of releasing theatrically in Korea on February 28, followed by March 7 in the U.S. by Warner Bros.

“It’s exciting to have the honor of premiering Mickey 17 in Korea before it hits cinemas worldwide in March,” Bong told the press conference at Seoul’s Yongsan CGV cinema.

It marked a first visit to Korea for Pattinson who was greeted by hundreds of fans as he touched down at Seoul’s Incheon Airport.

“I’m just so happy people are excited about the movie. It has been a long road to come to this release and to see people excited and with the poster already and wanting it signed. It’s exciting,” he said.

The Twilight, The Batman and Tenet star said he was puzzled as to why he had never made it to Korea before.

“I don’t understand how I’ve never come to Seoul with promotional tours with other movies. I’ve always wanted to come. I know a lot of fun people who live here, and I wanted to meet up with these guys again,” he said referring to Bong and his producing team.

Adapted from Edward Ashton’s 2022 sci-fi novel of ‘Mickey 7’, Mickey 17 revolves around a directionless man living in a near future who signs up for a job as an “expendable”, or disposable employee sent on dangerous missions who is automatically regenerated if he perishes on the job.

“The script seems deceptively simple at first,” said Pattinson. “But then when you try to break down Mickey’s mentality, this guy who has zero self-confidence but somehow doesn’t feel sorry for himself, it gets complicated really quickly. I ended up thinking of him as this poorly trained dog who needs to die 17 times to finally learn something.”

Bong said the film was more than “just” a sci-fi movie.

“It’s about humanity. The story of Mickey revolves around an ordinary powerless and vulnerable young man,” he explained.

“Unlike the original novel where Mickey is portrayed as a history teacher and the story is filled with technical explanations about science, I chose to strip away these details and focus purely on the human aspects, to present Mickey as member of the working class, a lonely figure with an extreme job.”

Recounting his experiences shooting the film, Pattinson recounted how the set had the feel of “giant Star Wars” production and revealed that he and the rest of the cast – which features Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo – had been intrigued by Bong’s directing style in which he got his actors to deliver one or two lines at a time.

“I think all the actors had the same experience in that we’d turn up, and then ask, ‘What’s happening? We shoot one line and then move on?’. After one week, everyone is like, ‘This is the best, we want to do every movie like this’… also you [Bong] are so open with showing the edit on set. It’s fascinating to see that you have the entire movie in your head before we have already started shooting it.”

Bong suggested their bemusement was due to the different way Korean filmmakers shoot and edit their films.

“In Korea, we typically edit directly on set which is not very common in the U.S. so foreign actors often find it fascinating to see editing done in real-time,” he said.

The first source added, “Bradley is a very easygoing kind of guy. His demeanor is very relaxed and chill.”

  • Kevin Durant joins Commanders’ locker room after playoff win — and gets in a dig at Lions’ Jahmyr Gibbs

The Washington Commanders are moving on to the NFC championship game, and they’ve got one powerful NBA name in their corner — and their locker room. On Saturday, as the Commanders celebrated their 45-31 upset over the Detroit Lions, they had a special guest join the party: Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant.

Durant, who was born and raised in the D.C. area and is a longtime Washington fan, supported his favorite team through the upset. He also got in a few well-placed barbs toward Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs.

Commanders rookie cornerback Mike Sainristil — who had two key interceptions in the matchup — posted a video on his Instagram Story of Durant with the team postgame.

“Hey, what you gotta say though?” Sainristil asked Durant.

“Jahmyr, put your buffs on,” Durant said — a reference to the Cartier sunglasses. The taunt prompted laughs and “oohs” from the Commanders’ locker room.

Earlier in the matchup, Gibbs, who is known for his touchdown celebrations, had scored the first touchdown of the game and celebrated by mimicking a dance that Durant famously did pregame before the 2017 NBA Finals.

Durant did not take kindly to the tribute.

“I’m already sick of Jahmyr Gibbs. Move around somewhere bro damn,” Durant wrote in response to the video on X.

Gibbs ended with 14 rushes for 105 yards and two touchdowns, but the team overall fell short. Both teams put up a historic second quarter in the high-scoring game — and Washington came out on top in the end.

After the game, Durant left Detroit with one more jab: a video of the original dance with the caption: “Have a great night Detroit.”

The Commanders will now go on to the NFC championship game to play the Philadelphia Eagles. We’ll have to see if Durant makes another locker room appearance next weekend.

The Commanders’ locker room was buzzing with excitement after their playoff win, but it got even more electrifying when Kevin Durant walked in. The basketball superstar had shown up to support the team and celebrate their victory. However, Durant couldn’t resist taking a playful jab at Lions’ Jahmyr Gibbs, who had been talking smack leading up to the game. Durant joked, “Hey, Gibbs, maybe next time you’ll think twice before running your mouth. You can’t talk your way to a win, you gotta earn it on the court.” The Commanders erupted in laughter, grateful to have Durant on their side both on and off the court.

  • Son of fallen officer Keith Dressel joins Toledo Police Department

Keith Dressel’s son, Noah, graduated from the 71st academy class of the Toledo Police Department 18 years after his death.

PERRYSBURG, Ohio — The Toledo Police Department celebrated the graduation of its 71st academy class on Friday at Owens Community College, swearing in 28 new officers. Among them was Noah Dressel, son of Det. Keith Dressel, who was killed in the line of duty in 2007.

“It means a lot to me that I can honor him this way and keep his memory going forward,” Noah Dressel said.

Dressel wanted to become a police officer for as long as he could remember, despite the tragedy of losing his father. Dressel found motivation in his memory throughout the academy’s 32-week training program.

“There are times when it got hard and that’s what I had to remind myself of,” he said. “That was what kept me going through all of the hard times. Any time I had doubt, that’s what kept me going forward.”

Toledo Police Chief Michael Troendle, a classmate of Keith Dressel at the police academy, spoke with Noah at the beginning of his journey.

“I talked to him when we interviewed to make sure this was the right thing,” Troendle said. “You could tell from the very beginning: he was all in. This was his dream.”

Now that he has achieved his dream, Troendle expressed support.

“It’s a proud day, but it’s a little heart-wrenching, too. To see him follow in his footsteps, I know that would make his dad proud,” Troendle said.

The newly sworn officers will have the weekend off before beginning their patrols on Monday.

It is with great pride and honor that we announce the newest addition to the Toledo Police Department – the son of fallen officer Keith Dressel. Following in his father’s footsteps, the young Dressel has completed his training and has officially joined the ranks of Toledo’s finest.

Officer Keith Dressel tragically lost his life in the line of duty, serving and protecting the citizens of Toledo. His dedication and sacrifice will never be forgotten, and now his legacy lives on through his son who has chosen to carry on the family tradition of serving the community.

As the son of a hero, the young Dressel is sure to bring a sense of dedication, courage, and honor to his role as a Toledo police officer. We are grateful for his commitment to keeping our city safe and proud to have him as part of the Toledo Police Department family.

Please join us in congratulating the son of fallen officer Keith Dressel on this significant milestone in his career and in honoring the memory of his father’s service to our community. Together, we stand united in support of our law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line every day to protect and serve.

  • As Tanner Scott joins Dodgers, where will Red Sox turn for bullpen addition?

The top reliever on this year’s free agent market is now off the board, and once again, the Red Sox have been cast as a bridesmaid and not a bride.

Left-hander Tanner Scott agreed to a four-year, $72 million contract to go to the powerhouse Dodgers on Saturday, as first reported by MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. The deal is tied for the third highest average annual value ever given to a reliever and reinforces a stacked Dodgers pitching staff that already added Blake Snell and Roki Sasaki this winter. Scott, who posted a stellar 1.75 ERA in 72 innings with Miami and San Diego last year, was always going to cash in. But his value was aided by the fact a bunch of big-market teams went after him hard.

The Red Sox did stay in touch with Scott throughout the winter, sources said, but the suggestion that Boston offered more than the Dodgers in terms of both years and AAV was described as “very inaccurate” by someone with knowledge of the process Sunday afternoon. The Red Sox were thought to be wary of going to four years for Scott, who will be 34 at the end of the season. The Cubs were another aggressor in Scott’s market and the Mets had interest before inking fellow lefty A.J. Minter late last week.

It’s well-known Boston wants to add another veteran reliever to a core that will include righties Justin Slaten, Liam Hendriks and Garrett Whitlock and new lefties Aroldis Chapman and Justin Wilson in 2025. As of early this month, the Sox had touched base with a long list of free agent relievers and were believed to be shopping at the top of the market. The list of options has dwindled significantly in the last two weeks.

Scott, Jeff Hoffman, Minter, José Leclerc and Andrew Kittredge have all signed recently and Clay Holmes, Blake Treinen and Chris Martin are off the board, too. It’s unclear if the Sox came close on any of those pitchers but they did have conversations with at least Scott, Hoffman, Minter, Kittredge and Martin. The rest of the relief market could move fast now that Scott, the top prize, has decided where to play.

Among those left out there are top options like Kirby Yates, Carlos Estévez, David Robertson, veteran righties Tommy Kahnle, Paul Sewald, Kyle Finnegan, Phil Maton and Jakob Junis and southpaws Andrew Chafin and Colin Poche. Kenley Jansen is also unsigned but the door is surely closed on a reunion after a less-than-desirable ending to his time in Boston.

Boston has expressed interest in a few of the pitchers left out there and has the money to get something done. After getting their four arbitration deals done, the Red Sox are estimated to have about $32 million left to spend before hitting the first competitive balance tax (CBT) threshold of $241 million. Giving a short-term, high-AAV deal to someone like Yates, Estévez, Robertson or Kahnle would make a lot of sense in an effort to add a veteran righty to a pretty strong group. There are also elite options on the trade market like St. Louis’ Ryan Helsley and Houston’s Ryan Pressly but with relievers, the path of least resistance is always paying in cash, not prospects. The Red Sox definitely have the money to land one of the remaining righties and should have the motivation. The issue is that a lot of teams, including those who lost out on Scott, are also pushing for relief help. For example, Kahnle has eight strongly interested teams on a very competitive market.

Sources continue to indicate that adding a right-handed bat is still Boston’s top priority with bullpen help being looked at as a secondary need. Free agent Alex Bregman and Cardinals trade candidate Nolan Arenado remain the two big-name — yet imperfect — fits the Red Sox have considered. Boston could be waiting on either Bregman (short-term deal?) or the Cardinals (salary dump?) to get desperate as spring training draws closer. Beyond Bregman and Arenado, there’s a limited list of righty-hitting options that includes free agent Randal Grichuk and Cubs trade candidate Seiya Suzuki.

As Tanner Scott joins Dodgers, where will Red Sox turn for bullpen addition?

With left-handed reliever Tanner Scott being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Boston Red Sox find themselves in need of a bullpen addition. Scott was a key piece in the Red Sox bullpen last season, posting a 3.79 ERA in 58 appearances.

Now that Scott is no longer in the picture, the Red Sox will have to look elsewhere to bolster their relief corps. One option could be to pursue a free agent reliever, such as Andrew Chafin or Collin McHugh, who are both still available on the market.

Another possibility is to make a trade for a reliever from another team. The Red Sox have a deep farm system with plenty of prospects to offer in a potential deal. Names like Richard Guasch, Brayan Bello, and Gilberto Jimenez could be of interest to teams looking to add young talent.

Regardless of the route they choose to take, the Red Sox will need to act quickly to address their bullpen depth before the start of the season. With Tanner Scott now in Dodger blue, Boston must find a suitable replacement to shore up their relief pitching.

Last week, he was further was ordered by the High Court not to disseminate CCTV footage used in the civil trial, with Mr Justice Alexander Owens saying he does not get “another run” at the case by throwing out allegations on social media.

Mr Trump used the Sunday rally to again celebrate his election victory, saying: “Tomorrow, at noon, the curtain closes on four long years of American decline, and we begin a brand-new day of American strength and prosperity, dignity and pride.

“We not only won a mandate, but we built a new American majority that will lead our country to success for generations to come,” he told supporters at arena, which is normally home to the NBA’s Washington Wizards and NHL’s Washington Capitals.

  • Elina Svitolina will be courtside for husband Gaël Monfils, hopes he joins her in Australian Open quarterfinals

With her match in the bag, Elina Svitolina can shift her focus back on husband Gaël Monfils, who is a win away from joining her in the Australian Open quarterfinals on Monday.

After opening play on Rod Laver Arena with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Veronika Kudermetova, the No. 28 seed plans a trip to Margaret Court Arena to watch Monfils—whom she married in 2021 —take on Ben Shelton for a spot in the last eight.

“Hopefully courtside!” she said when asked where she plans to watch the hotly anticipated fourth-round clash. I have time, a little bit, to do my recovery, and then we’ll put all energy towards his match.

“It’s going to be an epic one, so hopefully you guys can give him big support!” she added, hyping up the crowd.

Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina will be courtside to cheer on her husband Gaël Monfils as he competes in the Australian Open. Svitolina, who is currently ranked No. 6 in the world, is hoping that Monfils will join her in the quarterfinals of the tournament.

  • Justin Kurzel’s Jacob Elordi Series Joins Berlinale Lineup

The Berlin Film Festival has confirmed that Bong Joon Ho’s Robert Pattinson movie “Mickey 17” will play at the festival, in the Berlinale Special section, alongside a new – and equally glitzy — addition, Justin Kurzel‘s series “The Narrow Road to the Deep North” starring Jacob Elordi.

Variety first reported last week that “Mickey 17” would have its international premiere at Berlinale.

“The Narrow Road of the Deep North” will world premiere at the festival. Adapted from Richard Flanagan’s Booker Prize-winning novel, the highly anticipated series stars Elordi as a celebrated World War II hero who is haunted by his experiences in a Japanese prisoner of war camp and memories of an affair that took place just before the war.

Also joining the Berlinale Special roster is “The Thing with Feathers,” Dylan Southern’s film starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Richard Boxall. The movie, which will have its European premiere at the fest, revolves around a young father whose hold on reality crumbles as a seemingly malign presence begins to stalk him following the death of his wife.

World premieres slated for Berlinale Special include Min Kyu-dong’s “The Old Woman With the Knife” and Anna Muylaert’s “The Best Mother in the World.”

In keeping with its commitment to fighting against racism and antisemitism through its selections, the Berlinale will also host a special screening of “Shoah,” Claude Lanzmann’s monumental Holocaust film which first came out in 1985 and was made over a period of 12 years from interviews filmed around the globe with survivors, bystanders and perpetrators.

Lanzmann’s “Shoah” is also the subject of another film set for the Berlinale Special lineup, “All I Had Was Nothingness” by Guillaume Ribot. In his film, Ribot reveals Lanzmann’s relentless pursuit to tell of the extermination of six million Jews during the Second World War and shows unseen footage from the masterful cinematic project.

The Panorama section, meanwhile, will open with “Welcome Home Baby” by Andreas Prochaska. The sidebar will present a total of 34 films from 28 countries, including pics by Sir Isaac Julien, Ina Weisse, Mehmet Akif Büyükatalay, Amalia Ulman, Jeanette Nordahl, Sébastien Betbeder and Fernando Eimbcke. A series will also feature this year, “Other People’s Money.”

The Generation section, which is dedicated to films skewing or portraying youths, will feature Brendan Canty’s “Christy” and “The Nature of Invisible Things” by Rafaela Camelo which will open the two Generation competitions. The programme comprises 18 feature-length films, 20 short films and a series, including Alissa Jung’s feature debut, as well as new movies by Zacharias Kunuk, Lucia Murat, Robin Petré and Satoko Yokohama.

As previously announced, the 75th edition of the Berlin Film Festival will kick off with Tom Tykwer’s “The Light.”

Berlinale’s new artistic director, Tricia Tuttle, who previously led the BFI London Film Festival during a fast-growing five-year chapter, will celebrate her first edition at the festival this year, succeeding Carlo Chatrian.

Exciting news for fans of director Justin Kurzel and actor Jacob Elordi! The upcoming series from this dynamic duo has been added to the lineup for the prestigious Berlinale film festival.

Titled simply “Jacob Elordi Series,” this project is shrouded in mystery, with few details released about the plot or characters. However, with Kurzel’s track record of creating visually stunning and emotionally gripping work, and Elordi’s rising star power in Hollywood, this series is sure to be a must-watch.

The Berlinale film festival is known for showcasing groundbreaking and innovative work from around the world, so the inclusion of the Jacob Elordi Series in its lineup is a huge honor. Fans can expect to see the series make a big splash at the festival, and hopefully, we’ll get more information about this highly-anticipated project soon.
