New York’s famed Comedy Cellar has long been known as a testing ground for hot young talent. The Greenwich Village club hosted stand-ups like Ray Romano and Jon Stewart early in their careers, and although tourists now flock to the venue in the hope of seeing an A-lister do a surprise drop-in, young comics can still get their start there. Case in point: last weekend, Madonna did a set at the Comedy Cellar. You may be able to draw nearly 2 million people to Rio’s Copacabana beach for a concert, but in the cutthroat world of comedy, you still have to start from the bottom.
A report in the Sun said that Madonna tested out material for about 30 minutes, and that she was accompanied to the club by her friend Amy Schumer, who later went on Howard Stern to big up Madonna’s act. “She has something in her that’s interested in standup and she knows that, like anything else, you have to work really hard on it. She is kind of working on her set and it’s not cringey,” Schumer told Stern. “She’s funny! She’s got jokes. She’s got things to say. She’s got tea.”
This news was, like most news about Madonna, met with derision and scepticism from many corners of the internet. Some of these critiques are valid – from young comics, for example, complaining about a comedy dilettante getting coveted stage time at the snap of a finger – but most, sceptical about the idea that someone like Madonnacould ever be funny,are less convincing. To be a fan of Madonna is to know that she is a genuine kook and, at the very least, someone who’s always been interested in using humour to puncture the sanctimonious, impenetrable vibe that most pop stars give off.
The press tour around Madonna’s turn in Evita and the album that followed, 1998’s Ray of Light, may have enshrined in the cultural memory the image of her as someone only willing to talk about spirituality and inner serenity, but really, that only lasted a few brief years. Madonna is rarely remembered as a great actor, but in films like Desperately Seeking Susan and A League of Their Own, Madonna is capable of seeming spunky, weird, and skin-crawlingly dry, often in the space of a single sentence, playing off co-stars Rosanna Arquette and Rosie O’Donnell, respectively, with the kind of over-the-top goofiness that only a true ham can muster.
Directly after Ray of Light, it seemed like Madonna was sick of being taken so seriously, and enlisted the most ridiculous of comedians to help her loosen up. Sacha Baron Cohen’s Ali G character was, amazingly, a key figure in the promotion of her 2000 album Music, appearing in the video for the title track and introducing her as Maradona on a European music show; a year earlier, she cut Beautiful Stranger, a song for Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, and seduced Powers at the end of the track’s music video. In moments like these, the line between outlandish comedy character and over-the-top pop star became thinner than ever.
Later in her career, comedy became a way for Madonna to communicate more directly with her fans and the public. In 2012, after being dogged for years by comparisons to Lady Gaga, Madonna incorporated a mashup of her track Express Yourself and Gaga’s very similar song Born This Way into the set list of her MDNA Tour, adding in the hook of She’s Not Me for good measure. A few years later, she appeared onstage in a full clown costume for a show in Melbourne titled Tears of a Clown, in which bawdy jokes cut the tension between acoustic renditions of sad deep cuts and Elliott Smith covers.
This is not to say Madonna has never been totally humourless – see: when she likened an album leak to rape – nor is it to say that she is always in on the joke; her tweets and Instagram captions, no matter how serious the topic, always end up reading like parodies of dadaist poetry. None of the above moments suggest that Madonna would make a particularly good standup, either – for proof, just check out the time she tested material on The Tonight Show. But you can never tell me she’s not funny. Who else would spend much of her three-hour greatest hits show speaking to a mannequin dressed to look like her?

The LA Wildfires have taken so much from so many and this awful event has seen many helpers eager to assist their heartbroken neighbors. Tom Sandoval and his girlfriend, Victoria Lee Robinson, are two of these people.
Their hearts have honed in on working with the displaced animals around their afflicted city. As the news has shown many wild and domestic animals have equally lost their homes. Some have even lost their lives. To further help these innocent creatures, Tom and Victoria are now fostering one of these sweet babies in their hopefully air-conditioned home.
And this dog is helping them “practice for a kid,” they joked, making this parent cringe, as the differences are many. That said, everyone should appreciate their service to the animals of LA.

TMZ recently caught up with this not-quite-Nancy Drew-like star of The Traitors and Victoria, for an exclusive chat. In their interview, Victoria proudly showed off their sweet little foster dog. As stated, their dog is 8 weeks old. His name is Milo, and he is a bit of a handful, which helps prove their cause, as babies are handfuls, too.
However, Milo has brought these two even closer together. They have to walk, feed, bathe, love on, and play with their pup often. While caring for Milo might take up a lot of time, it has also been great for these two, they stressed, as they “both want to be parents” one day.
Dressed in a navy blue puffer coat, Milo is happily along for the ride. Speaking of rides, his foster daddy Tom even bought a harness to wear, which Milo fits comfortably into, just like a newborn.

For Rory McIlroy, things didn’t add up. He seemingly had done the math.
Last year, Scottie Scheffler earned over $29 million in PGA Tour prize money, right? Check.
Over his career, he’s up to $71 million, which puts him third on the Tour’s all-time list, behind just Tiger Woods and McIlroy himself, right? Check.
And Scheffler hurt himself — cooking ravioli at Christmas? Also check.
The news stunned when it started to circulate on Dec. 27. Scheffler, the world No. 1 and a nine-time winner last year, punctured his right hand with glass and needed surgery, his manager, Blake Smith, said. He’d also need to miss tournament play.
He missed four events. This week, at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Scheffler is back. During his time away, he said he reflected some, an exercise he said he rarely does. “I just really wanted to jog my memory,” Scheffler said earlier this month. “And since I wasn’t able to play golf, I tried to almost train a little bit at home where I was reminding my brain of what I was feeling over certain shots and how my hands felt on the club and stuff like that. So I wasn’t, you know, totally checking out from golf, if that makes sense.”
But after hearing about the injury, McIlroy had a question on Tuesday in his pre-Pebble press conference.
He was wondering about the dinner prep. And the money made.
“I think he made enough money to hire a chef,” McIlroy cracked. “It’s like why are you cooking yourself?
“I was hoping it was going to be more of a fun story than that. We were together in Vegas on the 17th of December and played that match with Brooks and Bryson. Firstly, just concern and hope he was OK. It sounds like he is. It’s good that he’s teeing it up this week.
“Yeah, get a chef.”
Should you be curious, Scheffler later said he does have one. It’s his wife, Meredith. “She’s pretty cute,” he said.
On a slightly more serious note, McIlroy was also asked what he felt stood out in Scheffler’s 2024 campaign, outside of the basic statistics. It was an engaging question, as it gives you a bit of a window into what McIlroy values.
“I’ve never — this is anyone, this is Tiger, this is in the history of golf — I don’t think I’ve ever seen a golfer play as many bogey-free rounds as Scottie,” McIlroy said. “He just doesn’t make mistakes. It’s so impressive. He plays the right shot at the right time over and over and over again. You obviously need the technical ability to be able to do that, but he doesn’t make mistakes. And when you don’t make mistakes on the golf course, the game can become pretty easy.
“So super impressive. If he continues to do that, he’s going to be the dominant force that he was last year and the year before that.”
But is McIlroy right? On the stats page on the PGA Tour’s website, bogey-free rounds are not listed, though in looking at 2024, golf stats guru Justin Ray tweeted on Aug. 15 that Xander Schauffele had carded his Tour-best 19th bogey-free round, which was five better than Scheffler, the next-best pro in the category. (From that point, over 12 rounds, Schauffele and Scheffler posted three more bogey-free scorecards, though two of Scheffler’s came at the Hero World Challenge.)
Still, Scheffler’s bogey-free play is impressive. Below is a look at where the rounds were played.

“It’s a simple way to put it,” Scheffler said, “but I think having superior control of my golf ball is what enabled me to not make a lot of mistakes. That’s like having a good feel where my swing’s at so I know how to manage my way around the course, playing the appropriate shot. I made plenty of mistakes, but I think it’s more about managing where the miss is. And when I have a really good feel where the club is as I did for a lot of last season, I’m able to really work my way around the golf course.
“It’s a lot simpler than just not making a mistake. It’s easy to say play it to the middle of the green, but at the end of the day, you’ve got to hit the shots. I think at times last year I just had really good control of my ball and that’s how I was able to avoid the mistakes.”
There is also this: On July 25, Ray shared that Lydia Ko had posted her 131st bogey-free round since the start of the 2014 season — and the next-closest pro over that period (Lizette Salas) was at 84. (To finish the season, Ko posted seven more bogey-free rounds — the first, second and fourth rounds of the Kroger Queen City Championship, the first and second rounds of the BMW Ladies Championship, the third round of the Annika, and the fourth round of the CME Group Tour Championship.)

The stunned look on Scarlett Johansson’s face during a “vulgar” joke swap segment on “Saturday Night Live” in December was no act.
The “Black Widow” star had the deer-in-the-headlights look in the Dec. 21 episode as she was filmed reacting to her husband, “SNL” star Colin Jost, reading filthy jokes about her. The lines were written by Jost’s “Weekend Update” co-anchor Michael Che.
In keeping with tradition, each host had no idea what jokes the other had written for them until they had to read them live on air. This time, though, Johansson was watching live backstage at Studio 8H.
“Oh gosh, are we reliving the joke swap?” Johansson told Jenna Bush Hager on TODAY on Jan. 24 while serving as guest co-host of Jenna & Friends. “It’s wrong. It’s just wrong, you guys. It got so vulgar.”

During the segment, Jost could barely contain his laughter as he read the start of Che’s lines.
“My boo, Scarlett Johansson, is so genuinely worried. Hey boo, y’all know Scarlett just celebrated her 40th birthday, which means I’m about to get up out of there!” Jost read on “SNL” before cracking up.
Johansson was asked by “SNL” in advance if she wanted to be a part of the bit, and she said she agreed under certain terms.
“I said, ‘I don’t want to get canceled or divorced,’” Johansson said on TODAY. “Those are my boundaries. And they said, ‘OK fine, what if we just tape you listening to the jokes?’ I said, ‘OK, that seems fine, tame-ish.’”
It turned out not to be so tame-ish, as one joke involved Johansson’s genitalia.
“Honestly Jenna, I felt like it was ‘To Catch a Predator’ when the lights kind of came on me and suddenly there was a whole audience, and I was there with, thankfully, a very stiff cocktail,” Johansson said of her reaction.
“The jokes got — they were so vulgar,” she said. “That’s genuine shock.”
Jost also affirmed earlier this week that his wife was not acting when she gave that reaction.
“Scarlett was genuinely so shocked,” Jost told Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show” Jan. 20. “I was obviously surprised by everything, but they gave her a heads-up.”
Even for an “SNL” regular like Johansson, who has hosted the show six times and made multiple other appearances, Che’s lines, as read by Jost, were an eye opener.
“Emma Stone, who was also there because we were doing a five-timers thing for Martin Short, turned to me and she went, ‘That was not OK. That was not OK,’” Johansson said. “My heart was racing. My eyes were watering. My hands were like this (shaking). It was surreal.”
During the “SNL” segment, Che also had to read jokes written by Jost.
“(Jost) writes also for Michael Che, but I honestly feel like Michael is trying to get us permanently removed, I don’t know,” Johansson joked. “He has a vendetta against us. Michael, why?! What’d I do to you, Michael?”
Jenna suggested a way that Johansson can get her revenge. She invited Johansson to return on Jenna & Friends with Che as a guest, and they can do a teleprompter swap.
“I’m all for that,” Johansson said.
