Raiders owner Mark Davis has a new G.M. and a new coach. But his new football consigliere is Tom Brady.
Speaking to reporters after Monday’s press conference introducing new coach Pete Carroll and new G.M. John Spytek, Davis explained that Brady fills a void the team had since October 2021, when former coach Jon Gruden was forced out by the leak of emails he sent to former Washington executive Bruce Allen while Gruden was working for ESPN.
“Bringing in Tom Brady was bringing in somebody on the football that I had been lacking having here in the organization,” Davis said, via the video posted by the Raiders. “Back in I guess it was ’18, with Jon Gruden. He was somebody that I brought in and really expected to be that person on the football side that would bring stability to the organization. He had a 10-year contract and all that, and he had his head chopped off. And we were put in a really bad position as an organization.”
Davis also made it clear that they pivoted to Carroll “when one person made a decision to go to another team.” Davis was referring to Bears coach Ben Johnson; Davis later said that the Raiders never made Johnson an offer.
Of course, they couldn’t. Johnson wasn’t available to be offered the job until the Lions lost. Two days later, Johnson made a beeline for the Bears.
When discussing the Spytek hire, Davis mentioned that Spytek was part of the group that brought Brady to Tampa in 2020. Davis added “to my chagrin.”
Which seems to confirm the claim from UFC guru Dana White that he was trying to broker a deal to deliver Brady to the Raiders — and that Gruden was the one who killed the deal.
Now, Brady has replaced Gruden as the man on whom Davis will primarily rely on the football side. This underscores the influence Brady will have over the team.
Even though Brady won’t be able to attend most games, since he’ll be working his primary job on the days the Raiders play.
Mark Davis, the owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, recently made a bold statement about quarterback Tom Brady, saying that he fills a football role that had been vacant since Jon Gruden “had his head chopped off.”
Davis made the comment in reference to Brady’s leadership and on-field presence, comparing it to the impact Gruden had as the Raiders’ head coach before his abrupt departure. Gruden, who was known for his fiery demeanor and intense coaching style, led the Raiders to a Super Bowl victory in 2002 before leaving the team in 2008.
Since then, the Raiders have struggled to find a coach who could replicate Gruden’s success and command the same level of respect from the players. That is, until Brady came along.
Brady, who signed with the Raiders in the offseason after a successful career with the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has quickly become a locker room leader and a key figure in the team’s success. His work ethic, experience, and winning mentality have earned him the respect of his teammates and made him a natural choice to fill the void left by Gruden.
While the comparison between Brady and Gruden may seem unconventional, Davis believes that Brady’s impact on the team is undeniable. As the Raiders continue to push for a playoff spot, it’s clear that Brady’s presence has been a game-changer for the team, and his influence will be felt for years to come.

Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis said that adding Tom Brady as a minority owner brought a needed piece that has been missing from the organization since Jon Gruden resigned.
“Bringing in Tom Brady was bringing in somebody on the football side that I had been lacking having here in the organization,” Davis told reporters. “Back in I guess it was ’18, with Jon Gruden. He was somebody that I brought in and really expected to be that person on the football side that would bring stability to the organization. He had a 10-year contract and all that, and his head was chopped off. And we were put in a really bad position as an organization.”
Davis made his comments Monday after the Raiders introduced Pete Carroll as the team’s new coach and John Spytek as the new general manager.
Gruden resigned as the Raiders’ head coach in 2021 after reports surfaced that emails he wrote over a 10-year period included racist, misogynistic and anti-gay language. Gruden was employed by ESPN as the lead analyst for “Monday Night Football” at the time he sent the emails.
Gruden sent emails to Bruce Allen, then the president of Washington’s NFL franchise, and others during a seven-year period that ended in 2018. The emails came to light during the NFL’s investigation into workplace misconduct with Washington under former owner Daniel Snyder.
Since that time, the Raiders have tried to replace Gruden first with Josh McDaniels and then Antonio Pierce before now turning to Carroll.
Brady, a seven-time Super Bowl champion, was approved to buy into the Raiders last October. He was part of the team interviewing prospective head coaching candidates, Davis said.
Davis said he hopes he’s found the pair to turn around the Raiders in Carroll and Spytek.
“We want to build something here and again, that’s been the process and that mindset all along,” Davis said. “Like I said, it got offset or kind of blown up when Jon Gruden was sent away and so we’ve been trying to get it right since then and we’ll see, but I’ve got patience to get it right, and I think we’ve got the people now — again I’ve always felt that — results are what speak to me and that’s what we’ll see.”
The Raiders went 22-31 under Gruden in his second stint with the franchise after he initially coached the Raiders from 1998 to 2001. He was traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and beat his former team in Super Bowl XXXVII in 2003.
The Raiders finished 4-13 last season.
In a surprising turn of events, Raiders owner Mark Davis has announced that he believes Tom Brady will be able to fill the void left by former head coach Jon Gruden. With Gruden’s sudden departure, many fans were left wondering who would be able to step in and lead the team to success.
Davis is confident that Brady, with his wealth of experience and leadership skills, will be able to guide the Raiders to victory. The six-time Super Bowl champion has proven time and time again that he has what it takes to win, and Davis believes that he will bring that winning mentality to the Raiders.
While some may be skeptical of Brady’s ability to transition from player to coach, Davis is convinced that he has what it takes to lead the team to success. Only time will tell if Brady can live up to the high expectations set by Davis, but one thing is for certain – the Raiders are in for an exciting season with Brady at the helm.

“Our family, we have a word we say when we are in the middle of being scared and excited — it’s scited,” said Abby Wambach, the two-time Olympic gold medal winning soccer player. “That’s me right now: scited.”
It was Friday night, the first full day of the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, and celebrities and filmmakers were packed into a luxury hotel ballroom in sweaters and snow boots for a gala, which raised $1.5 million for the Sundance Institute, the nonprofit founded by the actor Robert Redford that supports independent artists.
The 450-person event took place in the vast ballroom of the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley, a new hotel at one of the bases of the Deer Valley ski resort, where lift tickets cost about $300 a day and snowboarding is still prohibited.
The Sundance Institute proceeded with the festival amid wildfires in Southern California, which have affected many in the entertainment industry and beyond, to bring its community together, organizers said.
“What gets us through, and moving forward, is the art form and the ability to tell these stories,” said Ebs Burnough, the chair of the board of trustees for the Sundance Institute, when asked if he felt uncomfortable about holding the festival this year.
“Not every story is light and easy, but we have to tell them,” he said. “This is what storytellers do.”
The Sundance Film Festival, held nearby in Park City for more than 40 years, is credited with catapulting the careers of once-unknown talent, including Quentin Tarantino, Kristen Stewart and Christopher Nolan, and is now full of recognizable faces presenting big new projects while clomping in the snow and networking on Main Street.
Ms. Wambach was in Utah for the premiere of “Come See Me in the Good Light,” a documentary directed by Ryan White about two lovers who explore love and morality after receiving an incurable diagnosis. Ms. Wambach and her wife, the author Glennon Doyle, are executive producers on the film.
“It’s my first Sundance, and it’s my first time being part of a film,” Ms. Wambach said. “This is so exciting to be a rookie.”
The actor Jon Hamm, who was starring in “The Big Fix” a new audio drama from Audible about corruption in 1950s Los Angeles, was surrounded by gala attendees shaking his hand and asking for photos.
He said he had difficulty recognizing people covered in winter gear.
“Everybody isn’t in tuxedos here,” he said. “It’s like, ‘Do I know you?’ They have hats on, so I can’t tell.”
Cynthia Erivo, who was wearing a wrap dress and big, clunky silver earrings, arrived encircled by an entourage. She had just been nominated for an Oscar for best actress for her role in “Wicked,” and was coming off a whirlwind day of media appointments and events.
“We all love coming to Sundance because there are more indie, more off-the-wall ideas,” she said. “There is no pretense. You don’t have to dress up too much if you don’t want to. You just get to be cozy and see really good films.”
The festival, which opened just days after Donald J. Trump was inaugurated for a second term, has a slate this year infused with politics.
The actress Glenn Close was on the Sundance board for nearly 20 years and was thinking about current events. (She also played JD Vance’s mother in “Hillbilly Elegy,” the 2020 film based on the vice president’s memoirs.)
“There is so much discord and darkness in the world,” she said. “We have to be reminded of what it means to be human beings. Art has the ability to inspire, and we need that.”
She was at the gala to give a tribute to her friend Michelle Satter, the founding senior director of artist programs at Sundance Institute.
Around 8 p.m., guests sat down for a dinner of bronzed salmon and speeches reflecting on the impact of the Sundance Institute.
The actress Olivia Colman, whose film “Jimpa,” about a mother taking a nonbinary teen to visit their gay grandfather, premiered Thursday at a packed Eccles Theatre, took the stage to give Ms. Erivo the Visionary Award.
Ms. Colman, wearing face glitter and a costume tiara, lauded Ms. Erivo, “as a human, and as an actor, or as a singer, or activist, and ally, and a fashion icon, and as a frankly mind-bending practitioner of a whole load of gym exercises I can’t even name.”
Ms. Erivo walked on stage to a round of applause before putting the tiara on her own head. “It can’t be left here,” she said. “It must be worn.”
Throughout the program, audience members speculated on the festival’s future following the announcement by organizers about plans to move to a new location in 2027, which could include Cincinnati, Boulder, Colo., or Salt Lake City, with ancillary screenings in Park City.
“There is tons of traffic, it’s really hard to get around, it’s really hard to get housing, it’s expensive,” explained Amanda Kelso, the chief executive of the Sundance Institute.
“We love Park City, we love the community, but we also acknowledge that we need to think, ‘How are we going to be sustainable for the next 40 years?” Ms. Kelso said.
Mr. Hamm said if the festival moved it should adopt a new name: “I think that’s the only fair way to honor this and honor what the new thing will be.”
But if Cincinnati is selected, he joked, “we can water ski on the river.”
Sundance 2025 is officially underway, and this year’s festival has kicked off with a star-studded lineup of guests. Among the notable names in attendance are actress Cynthia Erivo, actor Jon Hamm, and retired soccer player Abby Wambach.
Erivo, known for her powerful performances in films like “Harriet” and “Widows,” is sure to bring her signature talent and charisma to the festival. Hamm, best known for his role as Don Draper in the hit TV series “Mad Men,” is also a fan favorite at Sundance. And Wambach, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and FIFA Women’s World Cup champion, brings her unique perspective as a former athlete turned activist.
With such a diverse and talented group of individuals in attendance, Sundance 2025 promises to be a memorable and thought-provoking experience for all who attend. Stay tuned for more updates and highlights from the festival!

Yeoh, 62, appeared on The View on Thursday, Jan. 23 to promote her new Star Trek movie Star Trek: Section 31, just after this year’s Oscar nominations were announced. Yeoh’s costars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo both received nominations for their acting and the film is also among this year’s 10 Best Picture nominees, giving the Wicked teama reason to celebrate. Still, they wish their director Jon M. Chu was recognized.
“We are all crying with joy, but we must say we are also crying because Jon M. Chu and Alice Brooks, our [director of photography], were not nominated,” Yeoh said, when asked whether she had spoken with Grande, 31, and Erivo, 38, since their nominations were announced. “But the rest of us are celebrating — Best Picture, costume, hair. It is major.”
After The View cohost Ana Navarro remarked, “This is the second time they’ve passed over Jon Chu. He should have been nominated for In the Heights,” Yeoh said, “Yes, I agree with you!”

Chu, 45, was left out of the five-person Best Director field at this year’s Oscars; Sean Baker (Anora), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), James Mangold (A Complete Unknown), Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez) and Coralie Fargeat (The Substance) make up the nominee field for that category. In total, Wicked is tied with The Brutalist for the second-most nominations among any movie this year; Emilia Pérez received 13 total nominations and leads the field.

“He is incredibly brilliant, and all of the other nominations stems from Jon,” Grande told Variety in a Jan. 23 interview, when asked for her take on why Chu did not receive a Best Director nomination. “I know he feels like seeing Wicked be celebrated is a celebration of him as well. We just got off Facetime, and I told him how much I love him, and the truth, which is that absolutely none of this could have happened without his leadership, brilliance, empathy and thoughtfulness.”

Erivo also shouted out Chu in an Instagram post she shared in reaction to her own nomination; she would become an EGOT honoree if she wins the Best Actress award. “Thank you @jonmchu, our fearless leader whose kindness provided us with the room to play, you are deserving of all good things and I’m lucky to call you my brother,” she wrote in a caption.
Conan O’Brien will host the Oscars ceremony, which will air live from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood on Sunday, March 2 at 7 p.m. ET on ABC and Hulu.
Michelle Yeoh, star of the upcoming film “Wicked,” revealed that the cast was left in tears over director Jon M. Chu’s Oscar snub.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Yeoh expressed her disappointment over Chu not receiving a nomination for his work on the highly anticipated film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical.
“We were all crying when we found out that Jon didn’t get the recognition he deserves,” Yeoh shared. “His vision and dedication to bringing ‘Wicked’ to life were truly phenomenal, and it’s a shame that he wasn’t acknowledged by the Academy.”
Chu, known for his work on films like “Crazy Rich Asians” and “In the Heights,” has received critical acclaim for his ability to bring diverse and inclusive stories to the big screen. Many fans and colleagues were shocked and disappointed by his omission from this year’s Best Director category.
Despite the snub, Yeoh remains hopeful that Chu’s talent and hard work will be recognized in the future. “Jon is a true visionary and a master storyteller,” she said. “I have no doubt that he will continue to create groundbreaking and impactful films that will inspire audiences for years to come.”
“Wicked” is set to hit theaters in December 2023, and fans are eagerly anticipating Chu’s unique take on the beloved musical. While the Oscar snub may have been a disappointment, the cast and crew remain confident in Chu’s abilities and are excited to see his vision come to life on the big screen.

Cynthia Erivo was nominated in the Best Actress category for her work as Elphaba in Wicked. The actor has now questioned director Jon M. Chu’s snub.
Cynthia Erivo is basking in the massive success of her latest release Wicked, and her nomination for an Academy Award in the Best Actress category. The film scored an impressive 10 nods, including one for Best Picture. However, director Jon M. Chu was shut out in the Best Director category, a fact that is still not sitting well with the actor. In an interview with Variety at the Sundance Film Festival, the actor shared her thoughts on the snub. (Also read:

What Cynthia said about the snub
During the chat, when Cynthia was asked about Jon M. Chu not getting into the top five, the actor said: “I don’t know. I wish people understood just how much work has to go into creating a big, giant behemoth like Wicked. None of that can happen without his vision. It just isn’t possible. He is the who can see who is right for this, who cast us in these roles, who asked for nine million tulips, who says he wants to build a real set so it feels embedded in reality. It’s him! He says he wants the camera right in Elphaba’s face when she walks down the steps in the Ozdust Ballroom. There is a kind of vision that you have to have in order to be in control of something that could run away from you very quickly if you don’t know what to do.”
She went on to add, “I think he is an exquisite director. The people that he put in charge of every department! That also takes skill.”
More details
The ones who were nominated in the Best Director category include Sean Baker for Anora, Coralie Fargeat for The Substance, Brady Corbet for The Brutalist, James Mangold for A Complete Unknown, and Jacques Audiard for Emilia Pérez.
Wicked, the first of two Universal Pictures films based on a Broadway prequel to The Wizard of Oz, stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the story of a misunderstood, green-skinned student of magic who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West. Wicked also stars Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh and Ethan Slater in pivotal roles.

Britney Spears will be heavily involved in her upcoming biopic and she’s weighing up a raft of big names to star in the project – with Natalie Portman and Selena Gomez way up high on the list.
Hot off the success of Wicked, which received 10 Academy Award nominations, director Jon M. Chu discussed his next endeavor, which is based on Britney’s memoir, The Woman in Me. Speaking with Billboard on the Golden Globes red carpet on January 6, he said the pop princess would be “very involved” in the project.
“I’ve been a fan since I was young and she was young and she was one of 12 acts at the Shrine Auditorium,” Jon, 45, said. “So I want to do her justice and tell her story right. But we’ll see. We’re developing it now and it’s a long road ahead.”
“She’s going to be very involved,” the director added. “I haven’t really started anything fully yet, but she will be very involved in this. I have ideas and things, an approach, but it’s very early.”
A source exclusively tells Life & Style the feeling is mutual, as “Britney wants this movie to be absolutely top notch.”
In fact, Jon seems to have been the perfect pick for the job. Despite suffering an Oscar snub for best director for Wicked, he’s proven he has what it takes to move an audience, even with source material. “She’s got so much faith and respect for Jon and his talent she has no doubt that together they are going to create something next level,” the source says.
Carlos Alvarez/Getty Images
Jon confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter the movie was happening in November, though he admitted the script hasn’t even been written yet. This actually allows for a lot more collaboration between the subject and artist, as Jon and Britney bond.
“The wonderful thing is, he’s very respectful of her and is allowing her tons of input as they put things together,” the insider says. That also means “she’s throwing out ideas of what actress she’d like to see portray her.”
The two top names from Britney to portray herself on screen: Natalie Portman and Selena Gomez.
“Britney adores Natalie Portman and thinks she’s such an incredible actress, she’d love to see her cast and thinks with the right make-up artist she could easily be transformed. The same goes for Selena Gomez. She’s someone Britney loves as a person and as an artist, she thinks she’s mighty talented and knows she’d also have her own history as a child star to draw on, which would make things easier.”
There’s no shortage of biopics covering musicians’ lives in the works, especially as stars like Timothée Chalamet and Austin Butler bring big awards attention with their performances. Without a doubt, the most important thing about nailing these types of movies is casting the perfect actor to represent the subject.
“They are a long way off casting because a script isn’t in the bag yet, but that hasn’t stopped Britney from dreaming about the cast.”
Britney Spears ‘Throwing Out Ideas’ With Biopic Director Jon M. Chu (EXCL)
In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Jon M. Chu revealed that he has been collaborating with pop icon Britney Spears on her upcoming biopic. The two have been working closely together, with Spears actively contributing ideas and insights into the project.
Chu, known for his work on films like Crazy Rich Asians and In the Heights, shared that Spears has been actively involved in shaping the narrative of her own biopic. “Britney is full of ideas and creative energy,” Chu said. “She has a unique perspective on her own life story, and it’s been incredibly rewarding to work with her on this project.”
The biopic, which is set to explore the highs and lows of Spears’ career and personal life, has been highly anticipated by fans. With Spears’ involvement in the creative process, the film promises to offer an authentic and intimate look at the pop star’s journey.
Stay tuned for more updates on Britney Spears’ biopic, as she and Jon M. Chu continue to collaborate and bring her story to the big screen.

The Punisher actor Jon Bernthal is the latest actor to join the cast of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.
As per Deadline, Bernthal is hopping on board the director’s historical epic but, beyond that, his role is “unknown.” That falls in line with the veil of secrecy covering much of Nolan’s latest project. Amid early rumors that went nowhere (including something, bizarrely, about helicopter pilots), all we have right now to go on is the source material – Homer’s Odyssey – and a stacked cast.
Bernthal joins Tom Holland, Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyongo’o, Charlize Theron, and Zendaya in The Odyssey, which Deadline speculates will begin shooting next month.
For those who skipped out on Greek Mythology 101, The Odyssey charts the epic saga of hero Odysseus as he confronts everything from Cyclops to Sirens on his way back to his wife Penelope after the Trojan War. It’s been adapted and revised across media, but only rarely as a straight one-to-one take on Homer’s epic poem.
Most notably, The Coen Brothers’ O Brother, Where Art Thou was loosely based on The Odyssey, but the story has also been spoofed, skewered, and parodied in everything from The Simpsons to James Joyce’s seminal 1922 novel Ulysses.
The Odyssey is set to hit theaters on July 17, 2026. Upon its unveiling in December, Universal wrote in a statement, “Christopher Nolan’s next film ‘The Odyssey’ is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time.”
Bringing all the latest movie news, features, and reviews to your inbox
Fans of Jon Bernthal and Christopher Nolan have been buzzing with excitement after it was announced that the talented actor has joined the cast of Nolan’s highly anticipated new movie. However, just like the rest of The Odyssey, details about Bernthal’s role are being kept tightly under wraps.
Known for his intense and captivating performances in projects like “The Punisher” and “The Walking Dead,” Bernthal’s involvement in Nolan’s film has only added to the anticipation surrounding the mysterious project. With Nolan’s reputation for creating mind-bending and visually stunning films, fans can only imagine what kind of role Bernthal will take on in this new cinematic adventure.
While some may speculate about Bernthal’s potential character, the secrecy surrounding the film only adds to the intrigue and excitement. With Nolan at the helm and Bernthal bringing his trademark intensity to the screen, this collaboration is sure to be one for the books.
As we eagerly await more details about the project and Bernthal’s role, one thing is for certain – this is a movie that fans won’t want to miss. Stay tuned for more updates and get ready to embark on another cinematic journey with two powerhouse talents at the helm.
