‘Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy’ Review: A Screwball Heroine Is Back

Even though Bridget Jones fans are used to zany plot developments, few could have anticipated the twist in the new installment of her film series: Miraculously, “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” reconnects with the deft balance of bubbliness, high jinks and emotion that was the hallmark of the movie that started it all in 2001, “Bridget Jones’s Diary.”

That is a surprise, indeed, because of the first two sequels’ diminishing returns. The previous entry in the franchise, “Bridget Jones’s Baby,” may have ended with our heroine (Renée Zellweger) as the beaming new bride of her soul mate, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), but the franchise itself was in dire straits. Labored and unfunny, that film, from 2016, sounded like a cinematic death rattle rather than peals of joyous wedding bells.

Michael Morris’s “Mad About the Boy” opens with Bridget a widow of four years — happiness is always fleeting, a bittersweet undercurrent that anchors those generally buoyant movies.

She is as messy and disheveled as ever, the kind of mom who sets pasta on fire and lets her young children (Mila Jankovic and Casper Knopf) run the house. Fortunately, she still has the same supporting friends (James Callis, Shirley Henderson and Sally Phillips). She also continues to hang out with the suave playboy Daniel Cleaver, portrayed, as always, by Hugh Grant — how the Bridget Jones movies have, over the years, handled this now unpalatable type qualifies as magic of the highest order. And blessedly, Emma Thompson pops back as Bridget’s gynecologist, pronouncing “syphilis” in a way that deserves to start a thousand TikTok memes.

Still, it’s time for Bridget to move on and make the most of her 50s. In short order, she falls into the toned arms of the 29-year-old Roxster McDuff (Leo Woodall, “The White Lotus”), who rescues her from an ill-fated attempt to climb a tree — one of many instances of slapstick in the movie, a wise decision considering Zellweger’s expert physical comedy.

As usual for the series, another man hovers on the periphery. Where Roxster is described as a “tree Adonis,” the science teacher Mr. Wallaker is called a “whistle-obsessed fascist.” This is a suspense-free recycling of the old Mark-Daniel antagonism, but nobody will complain, especially since Mr. Wallaker is played by a Chiwetel Ejiofor so effortlessly charming, you wonder why it took so long for him to land a lead in a rom-com.

“Mad About the Boy” is fairly fleet-footed when dealing with another franchise perennial: Bridget’s — and by extension, fairly or not, Zellweger’s — relationship with her body. This manifests most visibly in a lip-serum injection gone awry, but somehow the film sticks the landing after what could have been an uncomfortable pirouette.

Almost a quarter of a century in, the Bridget Jones movies are coalescing into an evocative portrayal of a character coming to terms with both her imperfections and her strengths in real time, a bit like François Truffaut’s Antoine Doinel series, which followed that character from teenage truant in “The 400 Blows” (1959) to newly divorced man in “Love on the Run” (1979). I’m now looking forward to seeing Bridget as a madcap grandmother.

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy
Rated R for saucy language and fulfilling sex. Running time: 2 hours 4 minutes. Watch on Peacock.

If you’re a fan of the Bridget Jones series, get ready for a wild ride because the beloved screwball heroine is back in “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.” This latest installment in the Bridget Jones saga picks up with our favorite singleton in her 50s, navigating the ups and downs of life, love, and motherhood.

Renée Zellweger reprises her role as Bridget Jones, bringing her signature charm and wit to the character once again. This time around, Bridget is a mother to two young children and struggling to balance her career as a screenwriter with her responsibilities at home. As always, chaos ensues as Bridget finds herself in a series of hilarious and heartwarming misadventures.

What sets “Mad About the Boy” apart from its predecessors is its exploration of more mature themes, such as loss, grief, and starting over. While the film still delivers plenty of laughs, it also tugs at the heartstrings as Bridget grapples with the challenges of middle age.

Overall, “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” is a delightful and heartwarming addition to the Bridget Jones franchise. Fans of the series will not be disappointed, and newcomers will find plenty to love in this charming and relatable tale of love, laughter, and second chances. Don’t miss out on the chance to catch up with Bridget Jones and see what new adventures await her in this latest chapter of her story.

  • Jerry Jones says it’s ‘a shocker’ Cowboys not in this year’s Super Bowl: ‘I wouldn’t have signed Dak Prescott’

The Dallas Cowboys didn’t have a very good year, to say the least. Jerry Jones, the team’s owner and general manager, said during the offseason the team would be “all in” on 2024, and then promptly failed to follow up with that promise in free agency. Dak Prescott got hurt, the Cowboys stumbled to a 7-10 season and watched Mike McCarthy walk away after an awkward contract situation.

They’ve since promoted Brian Schotteheimer from OC to head coach — easily the least inspiring hire of the 2025 coaching cycle — a move that served as a clear sign of what Jerry Jones values most about his organization. Which makes it really surprising to find out he thinks it’s “a shocker” the Cowboys aren’t playing in the Super Bowl on Sunday.

Yet that’s what Jerry Jones said during an interview with The Athletic’s Dianna Russini during Super Bowl week from what appears to be the NFL Honors red carpet, while also talking about taking “some pretty serious risks on talent.”

“I wouldn’t have signed Dak Prescott, the highest-paid player in the NFL, if now wasn’t when when we wanted to win. This is a shocker to be here at this Super Bowl and not have the Cowboys here,” Jones said. “I didn’t plan on that when I made that agreement with him. So we’re going to do everything we can to get there.”

Cowboys’ Jerry Jones feels 2025 free agency will ‘be in line’ with past years, Micah Parsons deal is priority

Cowboys' Jerry Jones feels 2025 free agency will 'be in line' with past years, Micah Parsons deal is priority

Jones was smiling a little bit when he said what he said, but surely even the biggest optimist in the world didn’t expect the Cowboys to be playing in the Super Bowl this year. Some idiots (hand up, guilty as charged) picked them to be a playoff team, which wouldn’t have been that crazy considering McCarthy won 12 games for three straight years preceding 2024.

Still, the red flags were there and they were loud: The Cowboys offensive line has dealt with age and attrition, Jerry cheaped out on paying Derrick Henry and didn’t add anything of substance to the run game, and when defensive coordinator Dan Quinn walked out the door Jones should have worried way more about the defense, since it wasn’t very good before Quinn got there, either.

Now the Cowboys are doing a full-scale reboot and yet are planning to handle things with a similar approach this offseason. Jones said he expects the 2025 offseason to “be in line” with previous years and the team will largely focus on getting a new deal for superstar pass rusher Micah Parsons.

If that’s actually true, it means we won’t see the Cowboys be very active in free agency and they’ll wait until the last possible minute to figure out a deal with Parsons, while letting the market push the price up for them instead of acting sooner.

Should things unfold in a similar fashion to last offseason, it absolutely will not be a shocker to see the Cowboys sitting at home when Super Bowl LX is played this time next year, just like every single season since 1996.

In a recent interview, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones expressed his disappointment in his team not making it to this year’s Super Bowl. Jones described it as “a shocker” and admitted that he had high expectations for the Cowboys this season.

Jones went on to say that if he had known the Cowboys wouldn’t make it to the Super Bowl, he wouldn’t have signed quarterback Dak Prescott to a lucrative contract extension. This statement has caused quite a stir among Cowboys fans, who have been divided in their opinions on Prescott’s performance this season.

Despite the disappointment, Jones remains optimistic about the future of the Cowboys and is determined to make the necessary changes to ensure they are contenders in the upcoming seasons. Only time will tell if Jones’ decision to sign Prescott was the right one, but one thing is for sure – the pressure is on for the Cowboys to prove themselves next season.

  • Chipper Jones visits Jackie Robinson Boys & Girls Club in Cairo

A little more than a century after was born in Cairo, Ga., traveled to the rural southwest Georgia town to observe the iconic pioneer’s birthdate while further aiding a charity that would have also been near and dear to Robinson’s heart.

“Any Boys & Girls Club in Florida and Georgia has been the onus of my focus throughout the life of the Chipper Jones Family Foundation,” Jones said. “The fact that I can extend that focus while being in Jackie Robinson’s hometown makes it even more special.”

Jones served as the keynote speaker for the 12th Jackie Robinson Boys & Girls Club “A Diamond Affair” fundraising event on Friday night. This event was held on what would have been Robinson’s 106th birthday.

Robinson’s mother moved the family to Pasadena, Calif., when he was still an infant. But Cairo has always celebrated its native son. The Jackie Robinson Boys & Girls Club provides opportunities for children, many of whom continue to benefit from the courage and fortitude Robinson showed when the former Dodgers star permanently broke baseball’s color barrier in 1947.

As Robinson constructed an 11-season Hall of Fame career that was highlighted with the 1949 National League MVP Award, he aided children, much like those who currently benefit from the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. He and Dodgers catcher Roy Campanella worked as coaches and counselors in the Boy’s Work Department of the Harlem YMCA.

“Jackie was a trailblazer of epic proportion,” Jones said. “It’s hard to find anything bad to say about the guy who was a hell of a ballplayer and a hell of a person.”

Jones joined Robinson as a Hall of Famer in 2018. He has spent his post-playing career continuing to give back though his foundation, which has aided The Rally Foundation, the Boys & Girls Club of America, Little League programs and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

“We try to do all we can to give kids with less opportunities than we had, the opportunity to go out there and play baseball,” Jones said. “Every chance I get to help the Boys & Girls Clubs, I will take every opportunity to help as many people and kids as I can.”

Chipper Jones, former Atlanta Braves baseball player and Hall of Famer, recently made a special visit to the Jackie Robinson Boys & Girls Club in Cairo.

The club, named after the legendary baseball player Jackie Robinson, provides a safe and positive environment for children to learn and grow. Chipper Jones spent time interacting with the kids, playing games, and sharing stories from his own baseball career.

The children were thrilled to meet a baseball icon like Chipper Jones and to hear about his experiences in the sport. Jones emphasized the importance of hard work, perseverance, and teamwork, encouraging the kids to always strive for their dreams.

Overall, Chipper Jones’ visit to the Jackie Robinson Boys & Girls Club in Cairo was a memorable and inspiring experience for all involved. It served as a reminder of the positive impact that sports can have on young lives, and the importance of giving back to the community.

  • The Phoenix Suns must find a better way to utilize Tyus Jones

When our teams lose, we naturally start to ask why, searching for potential solutions and wondering if it was something that could’ve been fixed. Sure, we can overreact in the heat of the moment, but when certain trends keep popping up, those overreactions turn into legitimate questions.

The Phoenix Suns lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday, and there were several reasons behind it.

Minnesota simply outplayed Phoenix in the second half. They hustled harder, swarmed on defense, and put the Suns in difficult offensive situations where they couldn’t execute. But beyond all that, there’s one disturbing trend that continues to surface, and it was glaringly evident in that game.

Devin Booker had a stellar first half, scoring 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting. It was clear to Minnesota that he was the focal point of Phoenix’s offense, and they knew they had to neutralize him to stand a chance of winning. And that’s exactly what they did in the second half. They attacked Booker relentlessly, swarmed him, and made his life difficult. The Suns, however, didn’t adjust. They allowed it to happen. As a result, Booker finished the game with nine turnovers.

Which brings me to a question that many Suns fans have been asking this season: Why doesn’t Tyus Jones facilitate the offense more regularly?

Last night was a perfect example of what needs to be addressed.

As Minnesota made their adjustment, Phoenix could have countered by having Tyus Jones facilitate the offense, which would have created better floor spacing for the Suns. Whether it’s running high pick-and-roll screens to force Minnesota into tough decisions or penetrating and kicking out to open shooters — Booker and Kevin Durant among them — the Suns had options. Yet they continued to run their offense through Devin Booker instead of Jones.

Despite being the starting point guard, Jones ranked sixth on the team with a 14.8% usage rate in the game. I’m not asking for Steve Nash-level facilitation, but a wrinkle now and then could keep the defense on its toes.

And it’s a trend we’ve seen all season. On the year, Jones has a 15.6% usage rate. Kevin Durant leads the team with 29.7%, followed by Devin Booker at 28.5%.

I’m not a head coach. I don’t create game plans or ask players to buy into a vision I’ve put forth. I’m just a fan who watches the game and asks questions. And I keep wondering: what value does Tyus Jones bring if you’re not using him to his full potential?

Turnovers were the Suns’ downfall last night. And the thing is, they have two point guards who, while not elite defensively, excel at limiting turnovers. Yet, neither of them have the ball in their hands enough. What’s the point? Why bring someone in if you’re not going to use him to his strengths?

I don’t have the answer. I don’t even have a suggestion at this point. But when the Suns recognize what opposing teams are doing, why do they continue to play into their hands by failing to adjust? You’ve got two incredible shot-makers in Devin Booker and Kevin Durant, and you’ve got a facilitator who can put them in a better position to succeed. So why not use that to your advantage?

The Phoenix Suns must find a better way to utilize Tyus Jones

Tyus Jones, the talented point guard acquired by the Phoenix Suns in a trade last season, has not been living up to expectations in his new role with the team. Despite his proven abilities as a playmaker and floor general, Jones has been struggling to find his rhythm and make a significant impact on the court.

It is clear that the Suns must find a better way to utilize Jones’s skills and maximize his potential. While he has shown flashes of brilliance in limited playing time, he has not been given the opportunity to showcase his full capabilities and make a significant impact on the team’s performance.

One possible solution could be to give Jones more minutes and allow him to run the offense as the primary ball-handler. By giving him more responsibility and trust, the Suns could unlock his true potential and help him thrive in his new role with the team.

Additionally, the coaching staff should work on developing a specific game plan and offensive system that caters to Jones’s strengths and allows him to excel on the court. By adjusting their strategy and game plan to better suit his playing style, the Suns could see a significant improvement in Jones’s performance and overall impact on the team.

In conclusion, the Phoenix Suns must find a better way to utilize Tyus Jones and help him reach his full potential as a key player on the team. By giving him more playing time, developing a specific game plan tailored to his strengths, and providing him with the necessary support and trust, the Suns can help Jones thrive and make a significant impact on the team’s success.

  • Jon Jones Responds as Calls Mount for Gable Steveson to Leave NCAA Amid UFC Rumors

Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson has been on a wild ride in the past few years. After testing the waters in professional wrestling, the 24-year-old decided to make his return to NCAA wrestling. However, Steveson seems to have garnered fans’ attention recently, claiming that his participation is ‘unfair’ to other athletes because he’s already an established Olympic winner. But in these cries from the fans, UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones shared a message regarding Steveson and his future combat sports.

In 2021, Gable Steveson made waves in the pro wrestling industry after signing with the WWE as another coming of WWE legend Kurt Angle, who also won an Olympic gold medal. However, the 24-year-old didn’t seem to fit the mold and in 2024, the promotion released him after a brief stint in WWE’s developmental brand, NXT.

Following his stint there, Steveson announced that he was all in on NCAA wrestling because he still wanted to be a part of the collegiate level, and despite fans fuming over this, Jon Jones appears to be siding with him. While there have been rumors about a possible UFC move for Gable Steveson after his WWE exit, Jon Jones responded to these rumors and the fans’ dissatisfaction with Steveson’s return to wrestling with a social media post.

Having known him personally and even retaining with the Olympic gold medalist, ‘Bones’ simply shared a story on Instagram, indicating his support for the decision Gable Steveson has taken for himself. The story by Jon Jones was a promotional post from the 24-year-old, where he was seen saying, “Wrestling raised me.”

Meanwhile, Gable Steveson also weighed in on a potential career in the UFC, and guess what? It was somewhat positive. Hence, fans might want to take a sigh of relief after listening to what he had to say about that career. Let’s take a look.

Will Gable Steveson come to the UFC?

When Gable Steveson decided to join Jon Jones in training last year, he claimed to have been motivated by the UFC champion. The 24-year-old claimed that ‘Bones’ was so impressed that he even urged him to consider making the move to MMA and even invited him to train with his team under coach Greg Jackson. Steveson claimed that he’s not sure where he’d start his mixed martial arts journey, but he does see him doing that in the future, and if he ends up in the UFC, he will become the second Olympic gold medalist to compete in the Las Vegas-based promotion.

“Not sure of the promotion yet, but Jon definitely lit a fire under me and was like, ‘Hey, I think you should go back to wrestling, I think you should try MMA. We got a great team here in Albuquerque if you wanna join us,” Gable Steveson told Ariel Helwani. “With the wrestling, with the boxing work, with the jiu-jitsu, I feel like I could be very good really quick.”

Well, for the moment, whether fans like it or not, Gable Steveson is still focused on continuing to wrestle. But to know what lies ahead, we’ll have to wait and see. Let us know your thoughts in the comments down below.

In the world of MMA, Jon Jones is a name that needs no introduction. The former UFC light heavyweight champion has been making headlines once again, but this time it’s not for his own fighting career.

Calls have been mounting for Gable Steveson, the NCAA wrestling champion, to leave college and pursue a career in the UFC. Speculation has been swirling that Steveson could be the next big thing in the world of mixed martial arts, with many fans and experts urging him to make the jump to the professional ranks.

Amidst all the rumors and pressure, Jon Jones has decided to weigh in on the situation. In a recent post on social media, Jones expressed his support for Steveson and encouraged him to follow his dreams.

“Hey @GSteveson, I see all the noise about you potentially leaving NCAA for the UFC. Just wanted to let you know that I support you 100% in whatever decision you make. You have the talent and the drive to succeed in this sport, and I believe you could be a future champion. Keep grinding, and don’t let anyone hold you back. #TeamSteveson,” Jones wrote.

With the backing of a legend like Jon Jones, it’s clear that Steveson has the potential to make a big impact in the world of MMA. Only time will tell if he decides to take the leap and join the UFC, but one thing is for sure – the world will be watching.

Renée Zellweger’s beau, Ant Anstead, joined her at a party for Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy in London.

But first, Zellweger, 55, hit the pink carpet on Wednesday, January 29, for her big movie premiere at the Odeon Luxe theater, wearing a show-stopping fuschia gown with a strapless neckline and long train. Curiously, she had two bandages wrapped around her ring finger — prompting speculation that she and Anstead, 45, might be engaged, and that perhaps she was covering up the evidence.

(Us Weekly has reached out to Zellweger’s rep for comment.)

The actress happily posed for photos with costar Leo Woodall, who wore an on-trend brown corduroy suit. Woodall, 28, plays a love interest for Zellweger’s iconic heroine in the fourth installment of the Bridget Jones film franchise.
