  • Jose Altuve willing to move to left field

HOUSTON — A reunion with free-agent third baseman would be met with overwhelming approval in the Astros’ clubhouse. It would also give Houston an abundance of infielders and force the Astros to get creative on defensive positioning.

So much so that the team has discussed moving 5-foot-6 second baseman to … left field.

In a move that would be reminiscent of when Hall of Fame second baseman Craig Biggio played two years in the outfield to accommodate Jeff Kent, switching Altuve to left field at 34 years old would be as stunning as it would be unconventional. And Altuve appears to be on board with it.

“We haven’t talked about it, but for Alex I’d do whatever,” Altuve said Saturday. “Like I said, he’s one of the best players in the whole league, but definitely one of the best players on this team. We want him to stay, and whatever I have to do for him to stay I’m willing to do it.”

The Astros currently have Christian Walker (signed to a three-year deal in December) at first base, Altuve at second, Jeremy Peña at shortstop and Isaac Paredes at third base. Paredes, who was one of three players Houston acquired in the December deal that sent All-Star right fielder Kyle Tucker to the Cubs, could play second base if Altuve switches to the outfield.

“Ultimately, if you get Bregman back, he would play third base,” Brown said. “Then you would kind of work through ‘OK, what should we do to adjust and make that happen?’ It’s a long shot, but it’s conversations you have.”

Astros manager Joe Espada said Altuve is the ultimate team player.

“I respect his willingness to do whatever it takes,” he said. “We had conversations about what our lineup would be like if we bring Alex back, and I’m confident we could get it done if he chooses to come back to the Astros.”

Altuve has never played the outfield, but there’s belief in the organization that he’s athletic enough to cover ground in left field, especially at Daikin Park, where left field is 315 feet down the line. In addition to losing Tucker in a trade to the Cubs, the Astros want to drastically limit designated hitter Yordan Alvarez’s time in left field.

“He’s so athletic, and he can do some things on the baseball field that a lot of people can’t do,” Espada said of Altuve. “If we get there, we’ll have that conversation with him. He wants to do whatever it takes to win. It’s important to us. I think he’s a cornerstone on this team. He’s the heart of the organization. He understands that, but when we get to that point, we’ll have that conversation with him.”

Added Altuve: “We have a better chance to win a championship with [Bregman]. I’m willing to do whatever for him to stay.”

Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve has expressed his willingness to make a position change in order to help his team succeed. According to reports, Altuve is open to moving to left field if it means the Astros can field their best possible lineup.

Altuve, a six-time All-Star and former American League MVP, has spent his entire career at second base. However, with the Astros having a surplus of infielders and a need for outfield help, Altuve is willing to make the switch for the good of the team.

This selfless attitude and team-first mentality is just one of the many reasons why Altuve is considered a leader in the Astros clubhouse. His willingness to do whatever it takes to help his team win is truly admirable and sets a great example for his teammates.

Astros fans can rest assured knowing that Altuve’s versatility and willingness to adapt will only make the team stronger in the long run. Whether he’s playing second base or left field, Altuve’s talent and dedication to the game will shine through.

  • Gameday 50: Florida Panthers at San Jose Sharks

    Graphic design: Francisco Oporta

The Florida Panthers (28-18-3) are in the Bay Area to pay their only visit this season to the slumping San Jose Sharks (14-31-6) at SAP Center.

Florida’s scoring woes resurfaced in Wednesday night’s frustrating 2-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings in game two of the four-game trek west. Evan Rodrigues put the Cats ahead with a power-play marker 7:27 into the second period, but that would be the only puck they’d get past Darcy Kuemper. Spencer Knight continued his recent run of good play, making 26 saves. Matthew Tkachuk has gone nine games without a goal. Aleksander Barkov has yet to score in 2025. PoMo, we have a problem, and keeping those two on the same line is unlikely to solve it.

The Sharks finished up a home-and-home against the Nashville Predators in San Jose on Thursday that ended in a 6-5 defeat. The loss extended the Sharks losing streak to five games. They have given up a whopping 27 goals during that span. Mikael Granlund leads the team in scoring with 43 points.

  • Jose Mourinho Has ‘Called’ Tottenham Target ‘To Convince Him’ To Make Fenerbahce Move

Fenerbahce boss Jose Mourinho has ‘called’ Tottenham Hotspur target Milan Skriniar ‘to convince him’ to make the move to Turkey with the Yellow Canaries.

Tottenham are going through a terrible run of form and they are sitting 15 in the Premier League table after 22 games.

The club are working hard in the transfer market to try and give Ange Postecoglou new options, with injuries having bitten hard in north London this season.

Tottenham are interested in bringing in an experienced centre-back and Paris Saint-Germain’s Skriniar has been strongly linked with them.

Skriniar is also gathering interest from Turkish giants Galatasaray and Mourinho’s Fenerbahce.

And according to Italian journalist Nicolo Schira, former Spurs boss Mourinho has ‘called’ Skriniar personally ‘to convince him’ to join Fenerbahce.

Skriniar has been a bit part player for PSG this season and the French outfit might let him leave for the right price.

Galatasaray are particularly keen on the centre-back and they have held advanced talks with PSG.

Mourinho though could make a compelling case to Skriniar and tilt him towards Fenerbahce.

It has been reported that Jose Mourinho, the manager of Fenerbahce, has personally reached out to a Tottenham Hotspur target in an attempt to convince him to make the move to the Turkish club. The player in question has not been named, but it is believed that Mourinho sees him as a key addition to his squad.

This move comes as Fenerbahce look to strengthen their squad ahead of the upcoming season, with Mourinho keen to make a statement in his first season in charge. The player is said to be considering the move, with the prospect of working under Mourinho proving to be a major draw.

It remains to be seen whether the player will ultimately make the move to Fenerbahce, but Mourinho’s personal intervention could prove to be a decisive factor in convincing him to make the switch. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing transfer story.

  • José Andrés, Mark Milley, Coast Guard Chief

    Topline

President Donald Trump’s administration is in the process of purging more than 1,000 Biden appointees from their government roles, including several high-profile terminations already announced, though some said they resigned before Trump could dismiss them.

    Key Facts

Trump’s personnel office is in the process of “identifying and removing over a thousand presidential Appointees from the previous Administration,” he wrote Tuesday on Truth Social, naming four appointees and telling them “YOU’RE FIRED!” using his “Apprentice” catchphrase.

Trump said he dismissed celebrity chef José Andrés from the President’s Council on Sports, retired Gen. Mark Milley from the National Infrastructure Advisory Council, former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms from the President’s Export Council, and his former Iran envoy, Brian Hook, from the Wilson Center for Scholars think tank.

Coast Guard Commandant Linda Fagan, who was two years into her four-year term and was not among the terminations Trump identified on Truth Social, was also terminated Monday by Acting Homeland Security Secretary Benjamin Huffman for performance reasons, according to multiple reports.

Andrés and Bottoms said they had already resigned before Trump’s announcement, and while Trump didn’t state his reasons for the terminations, Andrés, Bottoms and Milley have openly feuded with Trump, though it’s unclear why Hook was fired.

Andrés backed out of a restaurant deal with Trump after he disparaged Mexicans, sparking a two-year legal battle, and Bottoms criticized Trump’s incendiary rhetoric toward protesters in the wake of George Floyd’s death in 2020.

Milley—who was pre-emptively pardoned by former President Joe Biden Monday and whose portrait was removed from the Pentagon—called Trump “the most dangerous person to this country” and a “fascist to the core” in Bob Woodward’s “War.”

    Tangent

Federal advisory council roles are typically unpaid positions with limited authority. Biden also asked some Trump-era appointees to leave their positions or be terminated, including all 18 of his appointees to the boards of national military academies.

    Key Background

The terminations were among a string of actions Trump took on his first day in office, including signing a flurry of executive orders to implement his campaign promises on immigration, energy, TikTok and more. Other executive orders addressed federal employees, including one that suspends hiring and another directing agencies to stop work-from-home programs. Trump is expected to implement broad cuts to federal bureaucracy, likely with the help of the new Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency. Trump also pardoned all but 14 people convicted or charged in connection with the Jan. 6 Capitol riots, effectively dismissing more than 1,500 cases or convictions. The Senate is in the process of holding hearings for Trump’s nominees for cabinet-level positions, and Senate committees this week greenlit Trump’s Defense Secretary nominee, Pete Hegseth, and Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent.

  • Ryan Garcia draws ‘Rolly’ Romero for May return fight; Devin Haney vs. Jose Ramirez on undercard

Ryan Garcia is sending Devin Haney to the undercard before their highly anticipated October rematch.

Garcia takes on Rolando “Rolly” Romero in the main event of a May show under Turki Alalshikh’s Ring Magazine banner, while Haney faces Jose Ramirez in the co-feature, Alalshikh announced Monday night.

It will be the first Ring Magazine card in the U.S. following Alalshikh’s purchase of the company. Although a venue or exact date has yet to confirmed, New York’s Times Square is currently believed to be the targeted destination for the show.

Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) and Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) haven’t fought since their April 2024 bout, which means both will end year-long layoffs when they take part in their respective May fights.

Garcia dropped Haney three times en route to a majority decision win, but the match was later declared a no contest after Garcia tested positive for the banned substance ostarine in a pre-fight drug test conducted by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association. Garcia is currently serving a one-year ban that expires on April 20.

While their first match was fought at super lightweight — Garcia was 3.25 pounds overweight — both Garcia and Haney will be moving up to welterweight for their May returns and subsequent October rematch in Riyadh.

Romero (16-2, 13 KOs) lost his WBA super lightweight title to Isaac Cruz in March 2024 but rebounded with a 10-round decision win over Manuel Jaimes in September. Before that, Romero was ahead on one scorecard before he was stopped by Gervonta “Tank” Davis in the sixth round in a May 2022 bout.

Ramirez (29-2, 18 KOs), a former unified super lightweight champion, enters the fight on the back of a competitive decision loss to Arnold Barboza Jr. on November’s Gilberto Ramirez vs. Chris Billam-Smith undercard in Riyadh.

Alalshikh stated on social media he wants to match IBF welterweight champion Jaron “Boots” Ennis and WBO super lightweight titleholder Teofimo Lopez on the Garcia vs. Haney 2 undercard, with the winners and losers of the respective bouts then facing each other in February 2026.

An IBF final eliminator at heavyweight between Martin Bakole (21-1, 16 KOs) and Efe Ajagba (20-1, 14 KOs) is also confirmed for the May show, with the winner set to land a shot at the victor of the Daniel Dubois vs. Joseph Parker IBF title fight on Feb. 22.

In an exciting announcement, rising boxing star Ryan Garcia has confirmed that he will be facing off against ‘Rolly’ Romero in his much-anticipated return fight in May. The bout is expected to be a thrilling showdown between two talented fighters, with both Garcia and Romero known for their explosive fighting styles.

But that’s not all – the undercard for the event will feature another highly anticipated match-up between Devin Haney and Jose Ramirez. Haney, the current WBC lightweight champion, will be looking to defend his title against Ramirez, a tough and skilled opponent who promises to give him a run for his money.

With two exciting fights on the card, this event is shaping up to be a must-watch for boxing fans everywhere. Stay tuned for more details on the date and location of this epic night of boxing action!

  • José Andrés Praises Meghan Markle, Prince Harry for Visiting L.A. Fire Victims

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry “show up” when it matters, regardless of the cameras or criticism they may face as a result, according to their friend José Andrés.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex — who live in Montecito, Calif., about 90 miles north of the L.A. area — have quietly aided with wildfire relief efforts as blazes tear across Southern California, donating essential supplies, connecting with affected families and serving meals with World Central Kitchen (WCK).

Andrés is “just glad that they show up like so many others,” he told PEOPLE during the Cayman Cookout at the Ritz Carlton, Grand Cayman, where he hosted a number of events, including a live taping of his podcast, Longer Tables.

“I mean, listen, I consider them friends,” the WCK founder and restaurateur, 55, says of the pair, who have longstanding ties to his organization. “I know they are in the spotlight — not just in America, but in Britain — and what I can tell you from what I know is that they don’t have to, but they decide to do it.”

On Jan. 10, Harry, 40, and Meghan, 43, visited the WCK location in Pasadena to help distribute food and supplies to victims of the Eaton Fire, aid that The Bazaar and Zaytinya owner called “amazing.”

“Probably, you feel like it’s better that nobody does anything, because nobody criticizes you for showing up — but the amazing thing is that they show up,” Andrés says. “The hugs I saw [them] give to the people that recognize them and even the people that don’t recognize them, it’s people that just want somebody to listen to them, and give them a hug.”

Adds the chef: “I’m just glad that they show up like so many others.”

Like another one of his famous friends who assisted WCK in its fire relief efforts in the L.A. area, Jennifer Garner, Meghan and Harry were there to help, not for media attention, Andrés explains.

“The joy they bring to the people, the joy they bring to the first responders, or the people that lost everything… and to see those celebrities giving hugs and crying with the people when some of those celebrities lost their homes — they could be home, but they are there,” he tells PEOPLE. “And I think anybody that does anything, celebrity or not, only they will always forever get my applause and my recognition.”

Some of the individuals assisting WCK and other relief efforts, he continues, “may be celebrities, but in those moments they are one more person willing to do absolutely anything for anybody.”

“So, for everybody that was able to show up even for an hour, for me, they’re amazing people, because they don’t have to because some of them, they are suffering the consequences, maybe, of the fire,” he says. “But there they are and they don’t do it where there are cameras, they’re doing it where there is nobody.”

“And that,” he adds, “makes it very special.”

Speaking about the aid Meghan and Harry “anonymously” provided to the victims of the wildfires, as well as first responders and others affected, Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo told local news outlet FOX 11 that the couple “really buoyed the spirits of the first responders.”

“They want to be as helpful as they can be … we visited with some of the affected families in some of the burned-out areas in Pasadena and Altadena,” Gordo continued. “They took the time to meet the people that are affected and spent time. They’re just very caring people who are concerned for their friends and neighbors.”

In the wake of the wildfires, Meghan, who was born and raised in L.A., also postponed the release of her new Netflix series With Love, Meghan, a decision that was widely met with support. In response to those who criticized or questioned her motives, however, an industry insider revealed that the choice was an “easy” one, driven by her genuine concern for her hometown and those impacted by the fires.

“Delaying the release of With Love, Meghan was likely an easy decision for her. I don’t think she could imagine putting out a show centered on joy and hosting when so many people in her home state no longer have homes to host people in,” the insider said. “I think it’s sad that critics are saying she’s only doing this to avoid the fires overshadowing her show. We’re all human, and we’re dealing with a catastrophe.”
