  • Schiaparelli and Dior: The Joy of Escapism

It was Day 1 of the couture shows in a chilly Paris, and the Schiap pack were tottering around the Petit Palais in their gold-toe shoes and anatomical gold jewelry, swinging their bejeweled Face bags and waiting for the Schiaparelli show to start.

That they were a little — um, overdressed for 10 a.m. on a Monday didn’t seem to startle anyone. They had loosed the bonds of convention and entered that liminal space known as fashionland, where ball gowns at dawn are a perfectly reasonable response to the trauma of waking up.

“All I really want is to suspend the weight of reality,” Daniel Roseberry, Schiaparelli’s artistic director, said backstage before his show. “I hope people are transported, even if just for 10 minutes. That’s my goal.”

Then his first look appeared, a high-neck, long-sleeve lace top covered in enamel flowers and dropping into tiers of organza ruffles with the aged look of cloth dipped in tea, like a relic from the courtly era. And it was clear: We were entering a Trump-free zone.

Designers love to talk about “beauty” and “elegance” as their Band-Aid for the ills of the world; a panacea for the eyes, made to offset a reality that can be harder to see. Often this comes across as defensive; an excuse for not taking a stand on an issue or not getting involved. Sometimes, it can make the industry seem so out of touch, so determinedly frivolous, it’s paradoxically unattractive.

But sometimes it is exactly what you need.

This is one of those times. Reality is so unrelentingly exhausting, so overwhelming and uncertain, that having a moment to escape into fantasy, to ogle at the sheer skill of seamstresses who can perform the kind of material alchemy that would leave Rumpelstiltskin in awe, is a balm.

And for this the couture, the handmade for the .001 percent slice of fashion that is not about wearability but rather doing the impossible, is almost perfectly conceived. It brings you sliding down wormholes of reference and craft into moments of how-did-they-do-that delight that have nothing to do with whether you can actually buy the clothes, and everything to do with simply reveling in the view. With thinking: “Yeah, take me away!”

Perhaps that’s why, as the shows got underway, time traveling seemed to be something of a theme, with corsets and hoop skirts and the exaggerated S curve of the belle epoque — all padded hips and bottom and bust — dominating the runways. Even the body was being transformed.

Perhaps that’s why, for a show that wasn’t officially couture, but that was entirely couture-inspired, Simon Porte Jacquemus lured his guests to a penthouse aerie in the 16th Arrondissement that once had been owned by the early 20th-century French architect Auguste Perret, and which now is being restored. Then he ferried them upstairs in an elevator staffed by bellhops and took them on a whistle-stop tour of classic haute tropes such as the Trapeze, the New Look and the Caban, built on 1950s corsetry and filmed on a variety of iPhone 16s set up around the space. It had an illusory feel, if not too much originality.

And perhaps that’s why, at Christian Dior, Maria Grazia Chiuri took a trip down the rabbit hole to a wonderland of her own imagination (and, she said in a preview, childhood memories) made of hoop skirts and frilly pantaloons, Edwardian tailcoats and little black dresses.

Since she arrived at Dior in 2016, Ms. Chiuri has often resolutely focused on clothes so subtly accessible they can verge on the banal. But though there were pieces like that in the show, including a great little sleeveless black trapeze shift with ruffles for straps, it was the skirts, built on a carapace of bamboo, covered in trailing vines of flowers made from raffia, feathers and lace, and resembling the love child of an octopus and a parasol, that dominated. Also the playsuits and bloomers (items of clothing that normally have no place in a grown-up woman’s wardrobe) made from tulle covered in appliqués that seemed to swirl around the body like mist, popping out from under buttoned-up Jane Eyre jackets as though impossible to restrain.

Imagine Queen Titania’s minions had escaped from her Midsummer Night’s Dream and ended up in a bordello in New Orleans’ French Quarter, and you’ll get the idea.

That none of it made any sense juxtaposed against the surreal embroideries designed by the Indian artist Rithika Merchant, which decorated the walls of the Dior tent in the gardens of the Musée Rodin and had their origins in an entirely different mythical tradition, simply added to the unreality of the experience.

Just as, at Schiaparelli, the extreme construction of the clothes — sculpted jackets that circled the shoulders like bejeweled orbital rings before cinching in waists so tiny they suggested ribs might have been removed; trompe l’oeil hip bones built out to dangerous points beneath bullet breasts — underscored the sense that the garments themselves were practically decorative objects. The ability to sit down (or maybe even breathe) had been subjugated to the sheer Dadaist pleasure of wondering whether what you were seeing was a goddess or a vase.

Either way, it seemed like a dream.

In the world of high fashion, two names stand out as pioneers of escapism and fantasy: Elsa Schiaparelli and Christian Dior. These legendary designers created garments that transported their wearers to a world of glamour, extravagance, and pure joy.

Elsa Schiaparelli, known for her avant-garde designs and surrealist influences, brought a sense of whimsy and playfulness to the fashion world. Her collaborations with artists such as Salvador Dali resulted in iconic pieces like the lobster dress and shoe hat, which pushed the boundaries of traditional fashion and embraced the surreal.

Christian Dior, on the other hand, is synonymous with the post-war era of luxury and elegance. His New Look collection, with its full skirts and cinched waists, epitomized the fantasy of a refined and glamorous lifestyle. Dior’s designs offered a sense of escapism from the harsh realities of the time, allowing women to indulge in beauty and opulence.

Both Schiaparelli and Dior understood the power of fashion to transport us to another world, where we can forget our troubles and revel in the beauty of imagination. Their creations continue to inspire designers and fashion lovers alike, reminding us of the joy that can be found in the art of escapism.

Abundance is…Faith, Freedom, Resources, Energy, Joy, Awareness, Peace, Health & Strength

In a world where scarcity often feels like the norm, it’s important to remember that abundance is all around us if we choose to see it. Abundance is not just about material wealth, but also about having faith in ourselves and the universe, feeling free to pursue our dreams, having the resources we need to thrive, and the energy to make a positive impact in the world.

Abundance is also about finding joy in the little things, being aware of the beauty and opportunities that surround us, experiencing peace in our hearts and minds, and having good health and strength to live our best lives.

So, let’s shift our mindset from one of lack to one of abundance. Let’s be grateful for all that we have and all that is yet to come. Let’s embrace faith, freedom, resources, energy, joy, awareness, peace, health, and strength as the true markers of abundance in our lives. And let’s share this abundance with others, spreading positivity and love wherever we go.

  • Lives Lived & Lost: Tiger Bech ’21 Was Joy On and Off the Field

Tiger Bech ’21 had a magnetic personality and a larger-than-life sense of humor. He was described by Princeton football coaches as fearless, and Bech’s teammates gravitated toward him as a source of joy and encouragement on and off the field.

His death in a truck attack in New Orleans on New Year’s Day was not only shocking but devastating to family and friends.

“It’s very jarring because he had this like aura of untouchability,” Harrison Caponiti ’23, a Princeton football teammate, tells PAW.

The truck driver, identified by law enforcement as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, was an Army veteran. He drove into a crowd with a black ISIS flag on the truck’s rear bumper early on New Year’s Day, killing 14 people and injuring about 30 others. The FBI has stated that the attack was an act of terrorism. Jabbar, 42, was killed in a shootout with police.

Bech was in New Orleans to celebrate New Year’s with fellow Princeton football alumnus Ryan Quigley ’20, who suffered serious injuries as a result of the attack.

    Tiger Bech ’21

    Princeton Athletics

A Louisianan, Bech grew up in Lafayette and attended St. Thomas More Catholic High School. He earned all-state honors as a football player.

“He was like a lightning bolt that streaked across all of our lives, with the intensity of his love in the bright light of his personality and laughter,” said his high school position coach Lance Strother in a Facebook post. “He lit up our world and we’ll never forget it.”

Bech majored in sociology and played for the Princeton football team, earning All-Ivy honors as a punt returner in 2017 and 2018, and recording 825 receiving yards during his career as a wide receiver.

Going into the 2018 season, Bech “was part of a group that was arguably one of the strongest in the league and one of the most talented,” says Mark Rosenbaum, the quarterbacks coach for the Princeton football team. In 2018, his first year at Princeton, he was the wide receivers coach, and got to know Bech.

“He grew immensely in his approach to the details and in meetings and practice and everything,” Rosenbaum says. “And I think what defined him as a player is just his toughness and courage.”

Carson Bobo ’23 was a tight end on the football team and remembers looking up to Bech when learning the offense during his freshman year.

“Things are hard when you’re freshmen and you kind of look up to the older guys to guide you. And he was always just having a good time smiling and never took anything too seriously — while he kept the important things important,” says Bobo.

At his funeral service, people spoke about Bech’s love for life, outgoing personality, and how he cherished those around him.

Quigley and Bech worked together at Seaport Global Holdings, an investment company in New York City.

“From the moment that [Bech] joined our firm, he was recognized as a very positive, energetic young man, exceptional in many ways,” says Victor Kurylak ’79, COO of Seaport.

According to multiple people who attended Bech’s wake, the funeral home was nearly overwhelmed by the number of mourners, with a line of people wrapped around the building. “The love that came from the funeral, oh my goodness … this place was packed,” says Bobo.

Some alumni flew into Atlanta and drove eight hours to Lafayette to be there for Bech’s funeral.

“He was a ‘Tiger’ in every way — a ferocious competitor with endless energy, a beloved teammate, and a caring friend,” said head football coach Bob Surace ’90 in a statement. “Our last conversation was about how proud I was of the growth he showed during his time at Princeton and the success he was having after graduation.”

At Bech’s funeral service, his siblings emphasized how his death had brought so many people together in love.

“He was my best friend. My role model. My number one fan. The person I always wanted to grow up and be,” said Jack Bech, Tiger’s younger brother, at the service. Jack Bech is a wide receiver at Texas Christian University.

“He did everything he set out to do this side of heaven, except for watching me live out my dream of playing in the NFL,” Jack Bech said. “But now, he will have the best seat in the house.”

Hope Perry ’24 is PAW’s reporting fellow.

Tiger Bech, a beloved member of the class of 2021, was known for his infectious joy both on and off the field. With a passion for sports and a heart of gold, Tiger touched the lives of all who knew him.

On the field, Tiger was a force to be reckoned with. His speed and agility made him a standout player in both soccer and track, earning him respect and admiration from teammates and opponents alike. But it wasn’t just his athleticism that made Tiger special – it was his positive attitude and unwavering dedication to his team that truly set him apart.

Off the field, Tiger was a true friend to all. His warm smile and kind words could brighten anyone’s day, and his genuine care and concern for others made him a pillar of strength in the community. Whether he was cheering on his friends at a game or lending a listening ear to someone in need, Tiger was always there, ready to offer support and encouragement.

Sadly, Tiger’s life was cut short far too soon. His passing has left a void in the hearts of all who knew him, but his memory will live on in the countless lives he touched. Let us remember Tiger not for the sorrow of his loss, but for the joy he brought to us all. Rest in peace, Tiger Bech. You will be forever missed.

  • Arteta on Sterling’s performance, joy of working with Havertz, Saka’s holiday & more – Arseblog News

Having started off a bit grouchy in the first half of his pre-Villa press conference, Mikel Arteta lightened up towards the end, sharing a few jokes with the assembled media.

The manager addressed questions on Raheem Sterling, Kai Havertz, and Big Gabi, advised Bukayo Saka to take a holiday, and once again urged the crowd to create a lively atmosphere on Saturday night.

    On Raheem Sterling’s recent performances…

Yeah, for sure we can get a lot from Rash. We are getting much more than we used to get [from him] a few weeks back. Obviously, his involvement has been much higher and he’s going to be capital. Now he’s got more rhythm and more minutes, he had an injury that he’s coming back from, but, overall, I think he can give us a lot.

On Gabriel Magalhaes’ being a serious goal threat…

At the present time, very much. When you look at his numbers and the type of goals and the occasions when he has scored the goals, they are very important goals as well. He will be right up there.

On whether he’s been given assurances that spending in January won’t affect his summer budget…

Assurances in this industry, I think that nobody can give you because it’s related to performance, what we achieve, how we finish the season. A lot of things. It’s clear that it’s not easy, and I think that’s probably the most difficult part because a player that is injured at the end, what can you do? He has no value, he cannot perform, so it’s a really difficult scenario. On top of that, you have to add somebody else on, so it’s not easy.

On discussing internally the balance between buying now and the summer…

Yeah, for sure. We never plan a window. We have a plan, we look at the squad, how we’re going to evolve it, what is in the academy, how we’re going to change it and adapt things. And from there, then you go. Because from what you plan, actually, and the picture that we have today [either] we are really bad at planning or nobody could see that we were going to have that many injuries. So you’re going to have to adapt whatever the plan is as well.

On whether the January window is as simple as having the money to spend…

I don’t think so. Obviously, it’s a factor, because at the end, when you want to recruit a player and the player wants to come, you have to agree to a certain fee. But that player has to be available. It [has to be] a player that we believe can be the solution, short and medium and long term. And we have to be able to afford it. It’s not easy.

On January signings needinb to hit the ground running and whether that’s a factor in recruitment…

For sure. With every player, you have to understand the context as well. So which player do you bring? What are the expectations? How is this player going to fit in on that door when everybody’s asking, OK, we need to sign that kind of player? And then how do you deal with that? That’s always a big thing.

On Kai Havertz’s morale at the moment…

It’s a joy to work with him, honestly. I wish that you could spend some time with him and the players around him and the people around him. That’s why we all love him. Because he just looks forward, he takes it in the chin, he works harder, and he tries again. [For] him and anybody else, in football, what you’ve done today or three weeks ago, it doesn’t matter. It’s about, OK, now against Aston Villa, what we can produce. We’re going to be judges on that, that’s it. So let’s look forward to that.

Best to watch this next bit as it’s funny… [3 mins 50 seconds onwards]

On reminding the crowd of the need for a big atmosphere…

Hopefully not. Hopefully, that [the NLD] is the standard and we maintain it and we go from there to better.

On whether they are aware of this…

I don’t know. They have to watch the press conference! It would be difficult for me shouting and lifting my arms, what else can I do? I will try my best.

On Bukayo Saka having his blessing to go on holiday while he recovers from injury…

Yeah, yeah, he needs to. He’s obligated to go. Yes. With his girlfriend, with his family, that he can choose, on his own, but he needs to get away for a few days and refresh. He can still do a lot of things on the rehab because it’s the perfect stage right now, but I think it’s going to make him really good.

On whether he’s keen to stay close to the team at a vital point of the season…

Yeah, but he is and he’s been every single day there. But there is a moment, especially when we plan and we’re going to be away for a few days, that he needs to do that. That’s very important for him as well and we need to look after our players.

On Saka sending him a postcard…

Yeah, a nice picture or present or something!

In a recent interview, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta spoke about Raheem Sterling’s performance in their last match, the joy of working with Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka’s well-deserved holiday, and more.

Arteta praised Sterling for his exceptional performance on the pitch, highlighting his work rate and commitment to the team. The manager also expressed his delight at having the opportunity to work with Havertz, praising the young midfielder’s talent and dedication to improving his game.

On Saka’s holiday, Arteta confirmed that the young star has been granted some time off to rest and recharge after a grueling season. The manager emphasized the importance of giving players the opportunity to recuperate and return to training refreshed and ready for the next challenge.

Overall, Arteta’s comments reflect his dedication to developing and supporting his players, as well as his commitment to building a successful and competitive team. Arsenal fans can look forward to seeing more exciting performances from their favorite players in the upcoming season.

  • MSNBC’s Joy Reid Garners Backlash For Outlandish Wildfire Conspiracy Theory

Joy Reid has gone off on the billionaire right amid the wildfire that is tearing down homes across LA.

Nothing gets more viewers in the US media than getting people pissed off, and Joy Reid is a master of it. US journalism loves nothing more than a good conspiracy, aligning with people’s suspicions and paranoias. This time, in an effort to draw viewers back to faltering MSNBC, Joy Reid shared an outrageous theory on the wildfire ripping across LA.

She claims, unbacked by anything but her own opinion, that the wildfires are a ploy by the billionaire right to buy out California. The ones affected by the wildfires, she claims, are not the rich, but the poor and middle class. They will lose everything, and be left desperate and destitute.

The billionaires will then move in to snap up the land left burnt, and ripe for rebuilding, for a fraction of its original price. Once they have taken the land, they can rebuild overpriced rentals to add to their massive hedge funds. Now able to dictate prices, and who can live where, according to Reid.

She also alleges racism at the heart of this wild conspiracy theory.

“They can drive out the brown people and the black and Asian people, or just sink them into the same apartheid they’ve created in Texas, and they will control enough electoral votes if they control California to never have to worry about another presidential election,” she states.Joy Reid has her theories on the wildfire that has devastated California. Although it seems wild, she is far from the only person who sees foul play. She may have received all sorts of backlash for voicing her opinion, but she’s not alone in this conspiracy.

Jor Reid Adds Fuel To The Wildfire Conspiracy Flames

Of course, her theories, aired on national television, have caused a bit of a ruckus. While some agree with her view of the wildfires, others believe she is barking up the wrong tree. There are conspiracies on both the left and right sides. But, whether people agree with Joy Reid and her wildfire views is up for debate.

“Where does she get her information? Does nobody require evidence from these news people, actual reports? or they just take Joy’s word for it? They make these wild fantastical assertions with not one shred of proof or truth,” one commenter adds, making a valid point.

Her accusations are unfounded, and only based on her own opinion. Joy Reid is stating her wildfire conspiracy as a fact. This can be dangerous to people not bright enough to understand that everything on TV isn’t the truth. People often get opinion and neutral journalism muddled up.

Joy Reid is an opinioned talking head, not to be taken too seriously. As someone notes “I mean at this point it’s apparent she tries to come up with the most outrageous things to say to gain attention. She’s like a live tabloid.”

It’s important to remember that not everything has to be factual. People are entitled to their opinions, and someone like Joy Reid garners viewers by being contrarian. It works too.

MSNBC host Joy Reid is facing backlash after suggesting a wild conspiracy theory about the wildfires currently ravaging the West Coast. During a recent segment on her show, Reid claimed that the fires were deliberately set by “right-wing extremists” in order to further their political agenda.

Many viewers were quick to criticize Reid for spreading baseless and inflammatory claims, with some accusing her of fear-mongering and spreading misinformation. The theory has been widely debunked by experts and officials, who have attributed the wildfires to a combination of dry conditions, high winds, and human activity.

Reid has since issued a statement clarifying her remarks, stating that she did not intend to imply that all wildfires were intentionally set, but rather that some may have been the result of arson. However, her initial comments have already sparked controversy and raised questions about the responsibility of journalists and media personalities in reporting on sensitive and complex issues.

As the wildfires continue to devastate communities and wildlife across the West Coast, it is important for media outlets like MSNBC to provide accurate and responsible coverage of the situation. While conspiracy theories may generate attention and controversy, they ultimately do a disservice to those affected by the fires and undermine efforts to address the root causes of the crisis.
