Samoa’s prime minister criticises RFK Jr’s vaccine views after deadly measles outbreak | Samoa
Samoa’s prime minister, Fiame Naomi Mataʻafa, has criticised Robert F Kennedy Jr’s views and the spread of vaccine misinformation related to the deadly 2019 measles outbreak that claimed the lives of at least 83 people, mostly babies in her country.
It comes as Kennedy, who is president Donald Trump’s pick to lead the top US health agency, faced attacks in Senate confirmation hearings this week with Democratic lawmakers accusing him of covering up his anti-vaccine views.
Kennedy, who denies being anti-vaccine, visited Samoa in 2019, four months before the measles outbreak was declared. Although it was not an official visit, he met with government representatives and anti-vaccine influencers, in what health advocates and experts claim was a disinformation campaign that stoked distrust in vaccines.
“If he is the messenger for anti-vaxxers, as a leader, I do not agree with him,” Fiame told the Guardian in her first public comments on Kennedy after the first day of his confirmation hearings in the US.
Fiame said she was surprised by his nomination given his anti-vaccination rhetoric. She added that she refused to believe that Kennedy’s and Trump’s sentiments reflect those held by most Americans.
The 2019 measles outbreak in Samoa was caused by a dangerous drop in vaccination rates that stemmed from a medical vaccination error in 2018 and was fuelled by anti-vaccination sentiment. The previous Samoan government’s public health mismanagement also contributed to the crisis.
By October 2019, vaccination rates had fallen to 31% – down from 84% four years previously, according to WHO data. The decline began after a 2018 medical error, where two infants died due to nurses incorrectly administering vaccines mixed with an expired muscle relaxant. Though the error was unrelated to vaccine safety, anti-vaccine activists falsely blamed the MMR vaccine for the deaths.
As a result, when measles entered Samoa in late 2019, the low immunity levels allowed the disease to spread rapidly, leading to at least 83 deaths and over 5,700 cases, mostly among babies and young children.
“The facts remain that the two babies who died [in 2018] were through human error of the nurses. All the different actors, especially anti-vax people, got on board and suggested that the vaccination was the cause, which is complete rubbish,” Fiame said.
“We have a track record prior to that of high rates of vaccination for our children, and they were safe. The facts speak for themselves,” Fiame told the Guardian. “It was unvaccinated children who died.”
While Kennedy denies his visit to Samoa in 2019 worsened the outbreak, health officials argue that his anti-vaccine rhetoric fuelled public fear at the height of vaccine hesitancy in Samoa.
“His visit did not help our cause as we were already dealing with misinformation and hesitancy from the two deaths,” said Luana Tui, a Samoan community health worker who was part of the vaccination drive during the measles pandemic.

Kennedy has denied advocating for a ban on vaccines but has questioned their safety, which has in turn drawn criticism from experts.
What Happened to RFK Jr’s Voice?
Kennedy has said he first noticed a change in his voice in 1996, when he was 42.
In an April 2024 article in the Los Angeles Times, he said he “can’t stand” the sound of his voice. “But the injury is neurological, so actually, the more I use the voice, the stronger it tends to get,” he said, adding, “If I could sound better, I would.”
Kennedy has acknowledged that there is no proof the flu vaccine contributed to his spasmodic dysphonia, but said he views the vaccine as “at least a potential culprit.”
What Is Spasmodic Dysphonia?
Spasmodic dysphonia is a chronic neurological voice disorder that causes involuntary spasms in the muscles of the larynx (voice box), leading to interruptions in speech. It affects the way the vocal cords open and close, resulting in a strained, strangled or breathy voice.
The condition is considered a form of focal dystonia, a movement disorder that causes muscle contractions in a specific body part.
The condition impacts about 50,000 people in North America.
The exact cause is unknown, but it is believed to result from dysfunction in the basal ganglia, a part of the brain that controls movement. Though not caused by emotional stress, this may exacerbate symptoms and, in some cases, there may be a genetic component.
Symptoms include sudden, involuntary breaks in speech, a voice that sounds strained, breathy or weak, difficulty speaking fluently, especially on certain words or phrases, and worsening symptoms with stress or fatigue.
Spasmodic dysphonia can be considered a disability, depending on the severity and the impact it has on a person’s ability to communicate and perform daily activities.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one in four adults in the United States—over 70 million people—reported having a disability in 2022.
What Happens Next
Kennedy’s first hearing is set for 10:00 a.m. ET on Wednesday before the Senate Finance Committee in Room G-50 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building.
The second hearing will take place at 10:00 a.m. ET on Thursday, January 30, before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee in Room 562 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building.

Rodgers, who considered Kennedy’s offer to become his running mate during the 2024 presidential election, said on “The Pat McAfee Show” that he wanted to watch the hearing to “just see who tried to f— with him.”
“Like, please, somebody try and get after him and just watch him absolutely mop the floor with any of these senators,” Rodgers said. “You better come ready senators, come ready and try and see if you can pull one over on my boy, Bobby, because Bobby’s f—— smart, dude. And no notes, off the cuff, can handle his own pretty well, so excited for him to – and honestly so should everybody.”
Rodgers touched on Kennedy’s initiative to “Make America Healthy Again.” The movement appeared to be kick-started this week when the FDA banned red food dye due to potential cancer risk.

Although Jimmy Horn Jr.’s father won’t be able to cheer him on from the stands in the Alama Bowl, the senior wideout will still put on a show. Unfortunately, Horn Sr. is still incarcerated, leaving him unable to watch his son’s rise in person and without his most trusted coach in the stands.

Despite the physical distance, the bond between father and son remains strong. Horn Jr. stays in touch with his father, drawing inspiration and support from their conversations. The USF Bulls transfer pulled back the curtain on his last conversation with his father before his sentencing. “I was able to talk to him,” Horn said. “That was my last time talking to him before — so you just got to go even harder, you feel me? And it just felt good to talk to him. That just pushes me even more. It’s a lot of adversity that go on through life.” That fire was evident in his performances this season.

Following in his father’s footsteps and playing football at Seminole High School, Jimmy Horn Jr. was a standout receiver and returner. He also excelled academically, earning a 3.8 GPA and graduating with honors. You can imagine with each catch; each yard he carries the weight of someone playing for more than just himself.

Jimmy Horn Jr’s incarcerated father is James “Bo” Horn Sr. He is currently serving a 20-year sentence for drug trafficking and illegal possession of firearms.
