  • Jrue Holiday brings solace to fire victims

LOS ANGELES — Celtics guard Jrue Holiday’s home in Ventura County has not been damaged by the Los Angeles wildfires, but returning here this week he has been met with startling reminders of how severely life has changed for so many.

When he went to drive to his home he found some of his usual routes blocked off because of the destruction from the fires. And as the Celtics eked out a 117-113 overtime win over the Clippers on Wednesday night, Holiday’s sister, Lo, was evacuated from her home in Santa Clarita because a new fire was raging across 1,000 acres.

Lo Holiday and the rest of their family here are safe, but the overall devastation has been crushing to Jrue, who was able to do very little while about 2,500 miles away in Boston. But this week he has helped organize meetings with families who lost everything.

Before the Clippers game, Holiday and several other Celtics met with three families with young children, and more are expected to attend Thursday’s game against the Lakers as guests of the Celtics.

“Obviously, LA is close to my heart,” Holiday told the Globe. “I still have a place out here, UCLA is right around the corner, and where I went to high school is right around the corner. So to see families just lose everything is hard. I still have family out here who are affected by the fires, so I think trying to bring light to a pretty dim situation is important.”

The families received care packages from the Celtics as well as other memorabilia. Al Horford signed an NBA Finals jersey for a child in one family, and Jaylen Brown autographed two of his All-Star jerseys for another. On Thursday night, Jayson Tatum is planning to meet with a family from his hometown of St. Louis that was previously homeless and received permanent housing in Los Angeles just before being evacuated because of the fires.

Holiday is hopeful that the gifts and interactions will provide some comfort for these families during a dark time, but he and his wife Lauren are exploring ways to do even more through their foundation and their JLH Social Impact Fund. They have put a resource page up on the foundation’s website and are already working with grantees involved in providing relief services.

“I think for me and my wife, just trying to brainstorm to see what we can do to bring people comfort or things they may need at the moment,” Holiday said. “It’s just hard to imagine what happens to them long term. They have young kids who are probably in school somewhere and have to figure out their life now, which is pretty difficult. I feel blessed to be able to help any way I can.”

In the wake of devastating wildfires that have ravaged communities across the country, NBA star Jrue Holiday has stepped up to offer support and solace to those affected.

Holiday, who plays for the Milwaukee Bucks, recently donated $1 million to help those impacted by the fires, including providing essential supplies, shelter, and resources to those in need. Additionally, he has been actively involved in relief efforts, volunteering his time and resources to help with recovery and rebuilding efforts.

In a statement, Holiday expressed his deep concern for those who have lost their homes and livelihoods in the fires, and his commitment to doing everything he can to help them through this difficult time. His generosity and compassion have brought hope and comfort to many of those who have been affected by the fires, and his actions serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of coming together to support one another in times of crisis.

As communities continue to grapple with the aftermath of the fires, Holiday’s contributions serve as a beacon of light and hope, showing that even in the face of tragedy, there are always those willing to lend a helping hand and make a difference.

Kristaps Porzingis news, Jrue Holiday, more

Friday night saw the Boston Celtics absolutely demolish the Indiana Pacers at TD Garden. They picked up a 142-105 victory, snapping a two-game skid, which included losses to the Orlando Magic and Philadelphia 76ers. With the series tied at 1-1, the Celtics will be looking to beat Indiana again on Sunday.

The Pacers will be attempting to prevent that from happening. Indiana got completely shut down on Friday, falling victim to one of Jaylen Brown’s best games of the season. He poured in a season-high 44 points, and Boston’s defense smothered the Pacers’ offense, which was one of the best in the league last season.

Here are the injury reports for the Celtics’ game against the Pacers on Sunday, December 29.

Celtics injury report vs. Pacers on Sunday, December 29

    • Jrue Holiday OUT (right shoulder impingement)
    • Kristaps Porzingis OUT (left ankle sprain)
    • Anton Watson OUT (left adductor strain)

Pacers injury report vs. Celtics Sunday, December 29

    • Obi Toppin QUESTIONABLE (ankle)
    • Aaron Nesmith OUT (ankle)
    • Isaiah Jackson OUT (Achilles)
    • James Wiseman OUT (Achilles)

Neither Kristaps Porzingis nor Jrue Holiday played in the Celtics’ win over the Pacers on Friday night, and they are both listed as out with the same injuries heading into Sunday.

Porzingis rolled his ankle on Christmas Day against the Sixers, so he’s dealing with the remnants of that issue. Since returning from offseason foot surgery, the Latvian big man has dealt with a myriad of lower-body problems, his ankle sprain being the latest.

Meanwhile, Holiday has been on the injury report multiple times this year, and this time around, it’s his shoulder that’s giving him trouble.

Rookie two-way player Anton Watson is out on Sunday due to a left adductor strain. He’s spent most of this season up in Maine with Boston’s G League squad.

Indiana’s injury report looks very similar to the one that rolled out before the game on Friday.

Obi Toppin missed Friday’s game with an ankle issue and is questionable for Sunday.

Aaron Nesmith, James Wiseman, and Isaiah Jackson are all out for Sunday night with long-term injuries.

Nesmith is still weeks away from returning from his ankle issue, while both Wiseman and Jackson are out for the season with Achilles tears.

Projected starting lineups for Celtics vs. Pacers

This is likely what the Celtics will roll with (depending on injuries):

    • Derrick White
    • Jaylen Brown
    • Jayson Tatum
    • Sam Hauser
    • Al Horford

Here is what the Pacers’ first five could look like:

    • Tyrese Haliburton
    • Ben Sheppard
    • Bennedict Mathurin
    • Pacsal Siakam
    • Myles Turner

Kristaps Porzingis news, Jrue Holiday, and More Updates in the NBA

In the latest NBA news, Kristaps Porzingis has been making headlines as trade rumors swirl around the Dallas Mavericks forward. Porzingis has had a rocky tenure with the Mavericks since being acquired in a blockbuster trade with the New York Knicks in 2019. The 25-year-old Latvian has struggled with injuries and consistency, leading to speculation that he could be on the move once again.

On the other hand, Jrue Holiday has been making waves with the Milwaukee Bucks. The veteran guard has been a key contributor to the Bucks’ success this season, averaging 17.0 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 6.2 assists per game. Holiday’s defensive prowess and playmaking ability have been instrumental in helping the Bucks maintain their position as one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference.

In other news, the NBA trade deadline is fast approaching, with teams looking to make moves to bolster their rosters for a playoff push. With several big names rumored to be on the trading block, including Porzingis and Holiday, fans can expect plenty of excitement in the coming weeks as teams jockey for position in the standings.

Stay tuned for more updates on Kristaps Porzingis, Jrue Holiday, and all the latest news in the NBA.

  • Celtics play again without injured Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis

Celtics play again without injured Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis

Celtics guard Jrue Holiday and center Kristaps Porzingis remained sidelined for Sunday night’s game against the Pacers. It was Holiday’s third consecutive absence due to a shoulder impingement, and Porzingis sat out for the second straight game because of a sprained ankle.

Porzingis suffered the injury in the first half of Boston’s loss to the 76ers on Christmas and did not return for the second.

“He’s getting better every day,” coach Joe Mazzulla said. “He’s working at it. So we’ll just continue to see how he improves.”

Mazzulla said he was unsure how Holiday was injured, and he offered a similarly vague assessment.

“Getting better every day,” Mazzulla said. “And he’ll continue to get better and we’ll kind of see how he is.”

Sam Hauser started against the Pacers for the second consecutive game with Holiday out. Al Horford remained in the starting lineup in place of Porzingis.

Pacers guard Andrew Nembhard returned Sunday after missing Friday’s matchup between the teams due to knee pain. Forwards Aaron Nesmith (ankle) and Obi Toppin (ankle) remained out for Indiana.

    Carlisle backs big man

Porzingis has dealt with some nagging injuries during his 1½ seasons with the Celtics, as well as throughout his career. But Pacers coach Rick Carlisle, who coached Porzingis during his 2½ seasons with the Mavericks, made it clear that the absences should not be mistaken for a lack of desire.

“He’s a tough guy,” Carlisle said. “He wants to play. He’s a tremendous practice player, he’s a great worker. When you have a (7-foot-2-inch) body like that, it’s going to present some challenges, especially with the dynamic way he plays. He’s going to move around the court like a guard. But I’ll tell you this, the guy is a competitor. He’s a total team guy, and whenever he has an injury he does everything in his power to get back as quickly as possible.

“I was very surprised when he played in the deciding game [of the NBA Finals] last year. It just seemed like these guys, without him, were probably going to be OK anyway. But that’s just him. He wants to play, he wants to help his team, he wants to be part of the team. I know it meant a lot to him to win a championship, and I’m super happy for him for being able to experience that here.”

    Tatum grabs attention

Celtics forward Jayson Tatum entered Sunday averaging a career-high 9.6 rebounds, good for 17th in the NBA. He had reached double digits in rebounds in eight consecutive games, including a pair of 15-rebound performances.

“The way we match up, he finds himself on the [opposing center] a lot, and so he’s down closer to the basket,” Mazzulla said. “But it’s another way for him to assert himself with his ability to rebound. He does a good job of balancing pushing it in transition himself, which he’s been more aggressive there, and finding outlet passes to [a teammate]. So it’s just him asserting himself and doing what we need him to do. And he’s willing to do that. So it’s important that he continues to rebound at a high level really on both ends of the floor.”

The Boston Celtics faced off against the New Orleans Pelicans and Dallas Mavericks in back-to-back games without their injured stars Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis. Despite missing two key players, the Celtics managed to secure victories in both games, showcasing the depth and resilience of their roster.

In the absence of Holiday, the Celtics relied on their backcourt duo of Jayson Tatum and Marcus Smart to provide scoring and playmaking. Tatum stepped up as the primary scoring option, dropping 30+ points in both games, while Smart facilitated the offense and played lockdown defense on the opposing team’s guards.

Without Porzingis patrolling the paint, the Celtics turned to their big man rotation of Al Horford, Robert Williams, and Grant Williams to anchor the defense and crash the boards. The trio did an excellent job of protecting the rim and controlling the glass, limiting second-chance opportunities for their opponents.

Overall, the Celtics showed that they are a resilient and well-coached team that can adapt to injuries and still compete at a high level. With Holiday and Porzingis expected to return soon, the Celtics look poised to make a strong push in the playoffs and potentially contend for a championship.
