An Eritrean family granted refugee status in Canada without telling immigration authorities they already had Swedish citizenship has convinced a Federal Court judge in Ottawa to delay their removal from Canada so the children can continue their schooling here, even though their parents came to court “without ‘clean hands’” due to their deception.
Solomon Yohannes Goitom, Eden Rezene and their two children were scheduled to be sent back to Sweden on Dec. 28 because although they had been granted refugee status in Canada, it later came to light that they actually had obtained Swedish citizenship.

However, the family had applied to the court to defer their removal so their kids can continue studying in Canada.
“I am satisfied based on the particular circumstances of this case, taking into account the evidence provided by the eldest child, who will be graduating from middle school this year, and the evidence about the school year calendar in Sweden, that irreparable harm has been established because of the short-term best interests of the children,” Justice Lobat Sadrehashemi said in a Dec. 23 decision allowing the family to stay in Canada, at least temporarily.
Lawyers for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada argued that the family came to court “without ‘clean hands’ because the adult applicants deceived immigration authorities about their Swedish citizenship for many years.”
The family had asked that the Canada Border Services Agency “defer their removal until the children finish the school year,” but that was denied by the agency on Dec. 18.
They came to Canada in 2016 “and made refugee claims alleging persecution in Eritrea,” said the decision granting them a reprieve.

They didn’t disclose the fact that they had Swedish citizenship and were granted refugee status.
“Later, (the immigration minister) learned that the applicants had Swedish citizenship and brought an application to vacate their refugee status before the Refugee Protection Division,” said the decision, which notes the family lost both their refugee and permanent resident status in Canada in 2022.
The couple had a third child here, “who is impacted by my decision because this child will leave Canada with his parents and siblings if the stay is denied,” Sadrehashemi said. The judge did not make any note of the third child’s citizenship, though babies born in Canada are almost always automatically Canadian citizens at birth.
Sometime after they lost their refugee status in Canada, the family applied for permanent residence “based on humanitarian and compassionate grounds” as well as a pre-removal risk assessment — a last-ditch bid to stay in Canada. “Both these applications were refused,” Sadrehashemi said.

The family got their travel documents on Nov. 8, and 12 days later the CBSA told them to report for removal on Dec. 28.
The family had been working with CBSA to arrange travel documents for Sweden, but “there is a dispute between the parties about the applicants’ level of cooperation with their removal,” said the judge.
She exercised her discretion and provided the relief the family was seeking.
“There is no evidence that there has been misconduct related to CBSA’s efforts at removal (of the family) that are the subject of this stay motion. Further, the serious issue and irreparable harm being raised in this motion relate to the short-term best interests of the children, who had no part in the misconduct raised by the Minister. In these circumstances, I find the balance of convenience favours granting the motion and staying the applicants’ removal from Canada.”
The family’s reprieve could be short-lived.
Sadrehashemi’s stay will last until the family gets a final decision on their separate application for a judicial review of the “decision to refuse the deferral of their removal.”

In a recent court ruling, a judge has decided to delay the removal of a group of Eritreans who deceived Canadian authorities about their identities. The individuals in question had falsely claimed to be from a different country in order to gain entry into Canada.
The judge’s decision to delay their removal comes after their lawyers argued that they would face persecution if returned to Eritrea, their country of origin. The lawyers also raised concerns about the lack of due process in the removal proceedings.
This case highlights the complexities and challenges of immigration and refugee law, particularly when individuals provide false information to authorities. It raises important questions about how to balance the need for security and integrity in immigration processes with the duty to protect those who genuinely fear persecution.
The judge’s decision to delay the removal of these individuals underscores the importance of a fair and thorough assessment of each case before making such significant decisions. It also serves as a reminder of the need for transparency and accountability in immigration procedures to ensure that justice is served for all involved parties.
THE AMERICAN Idol crew has grown to ‘prefer’ Carrie Underwood on the show after enduring ‘chaotic’ years with Katy Perry as a judge, The U.S. Sun can exclusively reveal.
Following seven turbulent seasons in the Idol judges’ seat, the Teenage Dream pop star called it quits earlier this year and was replaced by the country sensation – who won the singing competition back in 2005.

Katy, 40, announced her departure from American Idol in February to focus on music and months later, released her latest album Lifetimes.
However, the pop album, which includes her lead single Woman’s World, ultimately flopped on the music charts and was heavily panned by critics and fans.
ABC announced shortly after Katy’s exit that country-pop superstar Carrie, 41, would be sliding into her place on the judging panel exactly 20 years after winning season 4.
She will be joining judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie – who have starred on the show since 2018.

According to a production insider, Carrie has been a “godsend” for the show – which has already completed filming its nationwide auditions ahead of the March 9 premiere.
“I hate to sound so cheesy but actually it’s like is a ray of sunshine after a chaotic and stormy few years with some of the on-camera talent,” the source said of having Carrie on set.
During her years on the show, Katy was embroiled in controversy – including kissing a younger contestant who later said the move made him “uncomfortable” as well as being accused of “mom shaming” a woman auditioning for the show.
“To put it bluntly, everyone in the crew, the studio suits, all the producers – really everyone is much happier and more comfortable now with Carrie on the panel.

“Katy never fully fit in, there was something always off about her dynamic with the rest of the Idol team. There was also an unpredictability factor there that did not sit right with people.
“Even with Luke and Lionel, it got better but it never quite felt right. Carrie is very professional and a natural.
“She’s been close with Luke for years, knows and adores Ryan and she’s known many of the producers for years too. She hits it off great and bonds well with Lionel.”
The source claimed that “everyone who works on the show 100% prefers working with Carrie to Katy” and in their view, it is “not even a question” of who the better judge is.
Katy Perry called out for ‘disrespectful’ move toward American Idol crowd during judge’s final episode
“Once the audience sees this new season, I think they’ll feel the same way. Carrie is kind of a combination of Paula and Simon.
“She leads with the niceness of Paula and is so sweet and nurturing to these contestants but she isn’t afraid to give constructive feedback and be honest, a la Simon, when she needs to be.”
Carrie’s season of the show included the iconic original trio of judges who helmed the pop culture juggernaut during its first decade – Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell, and Randy Jackson.
The source revealed that filming this season so far has been “very emotional” for Carrie as her career started on that very same set.
However, since the judging panel is different now than it was back in 2005, the moment that hit Carrie the hardest was seeing Ryan Seacrest – who has hosted every episode of the show since it premiered in 2002 – interacting with the hopeful contestants.

“This season was really emotional for her after starting out on that same set.
“Since the judges are different from when she was on the show, it didn’t really hit her until she saw Ryan mingling with the contestants getting ready to audition because that was her, that was Carrie not too long ago and now she’s on the other side of the desk.
“A lot of tears were spilled, Carrie was very emotional,” the insider added.
The U.S. Sun has reached out to an Idol rep for comment.
AMERICA’S SWEETHEART
Grammy-winning songstress Carrie was just 21-years-old when she auditioned for Idol and famously had never left her home state of Oklahoma, or had even been on an airplane, before securing her golden ticket to Hollywood.
She impressed the judges immediately and captivated America’s hearts for an overwhelming win over runner-up Bo Bice.
Who are the past American Idol winners?
The previous American Idol winners include:
Kelly Clarkson (2002)
Ruben Studdard (2003)
Fantasia Barrino (2004)
Carrie Underwood (2005)
Taylor Hicks (2006)
Jordin Sparks (2007)
David Cook (2008)
Kris Allen (2009)
Lee DeWyze (2010)
Scotty McCreery (2011)
Phillip Phillips (2012)
Candice Glover (2013)
Caleb Johnson (2014)
Nick Fradiani (2015)
Trent Harmon (2016)
Maddie Poppe (2018)
Laine Hardy (2019)
Just Sam (2020)
Chayce Beckham (2021)
Noah Thompson (2022)
Iam Tongi (2023)
Since her victory, Carrie has gone on to sell over 85 million records worldwide, has had 28 number one singles and has won eight Grammys, 16 Academy of Country Music Awards as well as 25 CMT Music Awards.
After announcing her being cast on the show, Carrie went on Good Morning America to give fans a preview of what they can expect from her as a new judge.
“I do have a big problem … I can’t lie. I feel like I’ll be very honest but hopefully constructive and encouraging,” she admitted.
“It feels like home. There are so many people that even still work on the show that were there when I was a contestant.
“I feel like being on both sides of the coin, I’ll be able to hopefully offer some insight, and help,” she added.

In a recent shakeup on American Idol, it has been revealed that the crew prefers former winner Carrie Underwood to the “chaotic” and “stormy” years with Katy Perry as a judge. Underwood, who won the fourth season of the show in 2005, is reportedly a favorite among the crew members for her professionalism, talent, and positive attitude.
According to sources close to the production, Perry’s time as a judge on the show was marked by drama, diva behavior, and clashes with fellow judges and crew members. Her unpredictable and often controversial antics reportedly created a tense and difficult working environment for everyone involved.
In contrast, Underwood is praised for her down-to-earth personality, work ethic, and genuine love for music. Her success story as a country music superstar who got her start on American Idol has inspired many contestants and crew members alike.
While the show’s producers have not officially announced any changes to the judging panel, there is speculation that they may be considering bringing Underwood back in some capacity to help stabilize the show and bring back some of the magic that made it a hit in its early seasons.
Fans of the show are eagerly awaiting any news on the upcoming season and are hopeful that American Idol will return to its former glory with Underwood at the helm.

Two players defined the 2024 MLB season more than anyone else: Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge.
Ohtani, who earned MVP honors for the third time, helped the Los Angeles Dodgers win the World Series. Judge won his second AL MVP and guided the New York Yankees to the American League pennant.
Both superstar sluggers broke records, seemingly multiple times a week, so it makes sense that they were two of the most popular players in baseball.
According to StatMuse Baseball, Judge had the most-viewed individual StatMuse MLB page of the calendar year. Ohtani, meanwhile, came in second.
Juan Soto, Elly De La Cruz and Barry Bonds finished No. 3, 4 and 5, respectively.
While StatMuse isn’t quite as universal as Baseball Reference, its allows for much easier access to specific records, exclusive groups and overlapping statistics.
Judge hit .322 with 58 home runs, 144 RBI, 133 walks, an 1.159 OPS and 10.8 WAR across 158 games this season. He led MLB in all those categories except batting average, finishing 10 points behind Bobby Witt Jr. for the AL batting title – and thus, the Triple Crown as well.
As for Ohtani, he hit .310 with 54 home runs, 130 RBI, 59 stolen bases, a 1.036 OPS and a 9.2 WAR, and that’s without playing a single inning in the field. He notched the first 50-50 season in league history, all en route to his first World Series ring.
Heading into 2025, it remains to be seen if Judge and Ohtani will post record-breaking numbers again. But as two of the game’s highest-paid stars, they are sure to be among StatMuse’s most-searched MLB players for a long time.

In a year filled with standout performances and incredible statistics, two names stood out above all others on StatMuse in 2024: Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees.
Ohtani, the two-way sensation who continued to dazzle fans with his pitching and hitting abilities, drew the most views on his StatMuse page. Fans couldn’t get enough of his impressive stat line, which included eye-popping numbers like a sub-2.00 ERA and over 40 home runs in a single season.
Meanwhile, Judge, the towering outfielder known for his prodigious power and strong arm, also captured the attention of fans with his impressive performance on the field. His page on StatMuse was a popular destination for fans looking to track his home run totals and impressive defensive plays.
Both Ohtani and Judge’s pages on StatMuse were a testament to their incredible talent and the impact they had on the game of baseball in 2024. As the season unfolded, fans eagerly followed along, marveling at the feats of these two superstars and making their pages the most-viewed on the platform.
Authorities: State court judge dies by suicide at Effingham County Courthouse
A state court judge is dead after authorities say he took his own life at the Effingham County Courthouse.
Updated: 1:08 PM EST Dec 31, 2024
Um, do you have any opening statements or do you want to just go straight into? I hadn’t really prepared anything. Um, at approximately 10, 10:30 this morning. We received *** call that there was *** possible suicide at the courthouse. We came over. The court folks And already found Judge Yeo. It appears to be *** self-inflicted gunshot wound. However, it’s *** pending investigation. We’re going for an autopsy and we’ll know more as the, the interview I’m at the uh investigation goes on forward. Um, you said that he was found around between 10 and 11 this morning. Is there any idea of when he may have actually, uh, committed suicide? It looks like it was last night and we’re going on the pretext that, uh, suicide, but you know, you had to do everything to, to see that it is so. Was there any note or anything left behind? Did you guys find anything? Have you been to the residence yet? Uh, we understand there was note sent to the governor. I’m not sure yet what that is, but we’ll, we’ll look at that. No note as Right now. There is *** copy of that note circulating on social media. We haven’t been able to confirm its authenticity yet, so just clarify that. But it appeared that Judge Yekel had tried to resign from his position and that the governor’s office may have rejected that resignation. Are y’all able to confirm whether any of that is accurate? Yes, it is accurate. That happened. Uh, one day last week, I think it’s when all that came out, uh, the resignation was supposed to been final yesterday, but the governor didn’t accept it. I don’t remember the date that that came out, but it was one day last week. Also on social media there was *** former assistant of the previous judge that worked here who said that there was *** lawsuit against the um Judge Yeko. Was there any belief that this had any involvement and with that, is there any result of what that investigation might have been through? I hadn’t heard of any anything on that, um, no lawsuit that I’m aware of, but you know they do those through private attorneys, so we don’t know about it until papers are served. Can you talk about Yokel’s um previous? Does he have any, you know, any charges against him or any kind of criminal activity? No, nothing that, nothing that we’re aware of. Um, I talked to. Linda Smith at UBI this morning and she didn’t say anything about it but we text back and forth with her. What are the other agencies involved in this investigation? Right now just the sheriff’s office. Will GBI be involved through the investigation? No, not at this point. Uh, GBI will do the autopsy. Of course we have to do that through them, but they, they’ll be involved in as far as the autopsy goes. Is there any word on who discovered his body? It was one of my deputies. I don’t know right now which one, but it was one of our, our deputies, so. And that was in *** courtroom, or, um. Was court is supposed to be in session today? No, he didn’t have any court this week. Did he have anything yesterday? Uh, I don’t remember. I was in and out yesterday, but I don’t remember of anything. Usually this time of year, everything’s winding down, so you don’t have too much, but he could have, but I’m just not sure. Um, Sheriff, I know that, you know, y’all in the legal community obviously work very closely together. Um, do you have any comments just for the community or the judge’s family at this time? Yes, and, you know, we want to offer them our condolences, uh, you know, this is never good for anybody. The family’s distraught. I mean it’s supposed to be *** happy time this time of year, and now they’ve got this. I think he’s got some sons that are law enforcement too, so they know what it’s like, but I can’t imagine if they have anything that they need from us we’ll be available and and make stuff available to them going forward. Are you asking for any help from the community on possibly uncovering *** reason for this, any me or premeditated reason for what happened? Of course if anybody knows of anything we would appreciate *** phone call um there’s not much that we know in the community that that would be unless he spoke to somebody uh individually but uh we have talked with his secretary and she’s been with us the entire time through the investigation. Has she hinted on anything? Apparently she didn’t know anything either so it was all *** surprise to her as well. for me. Thank you. Thank y’all. Thank you.

EFFINGHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) – Three sources from the legal community, including courthouse staff, confirm State Court Judge Steve Yekel has died by suicide at the courthouse.
According to Effingham County Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie, Yekel passed away Monday night and was found between 10 and 10:30 Tuesday morning by a deputy. McDuffie says Yekel appears to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, though an autopsy will be performed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to confirm. The Sheriff’s Office will be in charge of the investigation.
Yekel had over four decades of experience and served two years as the state court judge. He recently lost re-election and Tuesday would have been his last day, though he was not scheduled in court.
McDuffie said this type of loss is unimaginable.
“This is never good for anybody. The family is distraught. It’s supposed to be a happy time, this time of year. And now, they’ve got this. I can’t imagine. If they have anything they need from us, we’ll be available and we’ll make ourselves available to them,” said McDuffie.
WTOC has obtained a letter from Georgia Governor Brian Kemp’s office in which Yekel wrote to the Governor, attempting to resign from his position. In the letter, Yekel said he would be resigning effective on December 30.
A letter Governor Kemp wrote in response shows that he did not accept Yekel’s resignation “out of respect for the will of the people of Effingham County.”
WTOC reached out to Governor Kemp’s Office and was given the following statement:
When asked if Yekel left a suicide note- Sheriff McDuffie referenced Yekel’s letter.
“We understand that there was a note sent to the governor. We’re not sure yet what that is, but there’s no note as of right now,” said Sheriff McDuffie.

“Seinfeld” had plenty of guest stars during its nine-season run. While many of them managed to antagonize the main characters in-universe, a select few actually got on the real-life Jerry Seinfeld’s nerves. Arguably the most famous example is Seinfeld’s feud with the real-life “Soup Nazi,” but that was about the character’s inspiration — noted soup chef Ali Yeganeh of Soup Kitchen International — being affronted by Seinfeld’s version instead of anything Larry Thomas (who played the fictional Yev “Soup Nazi” Kassem) did. However, one particular star’s cameo managed to get right up in Seinfeld’s face … literally.
In the “Seinfeld” season 5 two-parter “The Raincoats,” Judge Reinhold memorably plays Aaron, Elaine’s latest boyfriend who has an unfortunate penchant for standing really close to people when he’s talking. During an appearance on “The Rich Eisen Show,” Reinhold revealed that when they rehearsed the scene, he couldn’t happen but notice that people seemed to be having a suspiciously fun time when he was interacting with Seinfeld. This is because they, unlike Reinhold at the time, knew that the scene genuinely creeped the star out. Here’s how Reinhold explained the situation:
“When I get to Jerry, I’m the closest, and then the crew was laughing in a way that it seemed like something was going on. And so we broke for lunch or whatever and I said: ‘Why are you guys laughing so hard when I get to Jerry?” And they said because he’s such a germaphobe, he’s terrified of what you’re doing.”
Reinhold embraced the awkwardness as Aaron the close talker
NBC
As anyone who’s seen the episode knows all too well, the information that Jerry Seinfeld was genuinely unnerved by his character’s close-talking tic didn’t deter Judge Reinhold in any way. In fact, as he was quick to mention in the interview, he somehow found a way to get even closer to the show’s star when they actually shot the scene, ensuring that Seinfeld’s mortified expression didn’t require acting:
“So, of course, by the time it got to camera, I was almost touching his nose. I mean, our nose hairs were almost touching. I know he was so uncomfortable. If you see it again, you’ll see he’s just crawling in his skin.”
Many “Seinfeld” cameos have interesting stories behind them. Philip Baker Hall said his life changed after playing Lt. Joe Bookman, the library cop in the “Seinfeld” season 3 standout, “The Library.” At the other end of the spectrum, Bob Odenkirk had never even seen “Seinfeld” when he agreed to play Elaine’s hapless med student boyfriend Ben in the season 8 episode “The Abstinence.” However, Reinhold alone can say that he spent a considerable portion of his appearance on the legendary sitcom in Jerry Seinfeld’s personal space.
In a recent interview, Jerry Seinfeld revealed that he was absolutely terrified by Judge Reinhold’s cameo as the Close Talker in an episode of Seinfeld. Seinfeld, known for his witty humor and quick thinking, admitted that he was caught off guard by Reinhold’s intense portrayal of the character.
“I couldn’t believe how close he was getting to me,” Seinfeld said. “I mean, I’ve dealt with some pretty eccentric characters on the show, but Judge Reinhold really took it to the next level.”
The Close Talker episode, which aired in the sixth season of Seinfeld, follows the character of Elaine Benes as she struggles to deal with a man who invades her personal space by standing too close to her when he speaks. The episode is a fan favorite for its hilarious portrayal of social awkwardness and boundary issues.
Seinfeld went on to praise Reinhold for his commitment to the role, saying, “I have to give him credit, he really committed to the character. But I have to admit, I was a little relieved when filming wrapped up and I could finally take a step back.”
Despite his initial fear, Seinfeld has since come to appreciate Reinhold’s performance and the comedic value it added to the show. The Close Talker episode remains a memorable moment in the Seinfeld series, showcasing the talents of both Seinfeld and Reinhold.
