  • Oracle stock jumps 6% after report says Trump to announce new $500 billion AI investment

Oracle (ORCL) stock jumped as much as 6% after a report said the company is set to be part of a $500 billion investment in AI infrastructure that will be announced by President Trump on Tuesday.

CBS News reported Tuesday Trump will announce a new private sector investment to build artificial intelligence infrastructure in the US, with Oracle, ChatGPT creator OpenAI, and Japanese conglomerate SoftBank (9984.T) among those committing to the joint venture.

The joint venture, called Stargate, is expected to begin with a data center project in Texas, CBS reported, and company execs are expected to commit to an initial investment of $100 billion at an appearance at the White House Tuesday. Other companies are expected to join the venture and bring investment in the program up to $500 billion in the coming years.

SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, OpenAI chief Sam Altman, and Oracle CEO Larry Ellison are all expected to be in attendance at Tuesday’s event.

On Monday, Trump signed a wave of executive orders, which included rescinding a Biden-era executive order that established safety guidelines for generative AI. The order had required large language models to share safety test results with the US government and tasked federal agencies with assessing potential risks.

Big Tech executives, including Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, and Apple’s Tim Cook, were in attendance at the president’s inauguration on Monday as the sector cozied up to Trump in the wake of his November election win.

Other day one actions from the president included invoking a national energy emergency, as well as a heavy focus on immigration. More actions are expected later this week, including greater clarity on Trump’s highly anticipated tariff plans.

  • Tesla Price Target Raised to $500, Stock Jumps on Analyst Optimism

Tesla’s (TSLA, Financial) stock value rose around 2% at the premarket Tuesday session because the company has maintained strong market gains since last year. Investor optimism about Tesla’s AI and robotics potential led analyst Adam Potter from Piper Sandler to raise the company’s share price valuation to $500.

Investors expect that newly relaxed regulations by the Trump administration will help Tesla advance its AI and robotics initiatives through their existing self-driving capabilities.

The core EV business at Tesla encounters fiscal pressures due to declining sales numbers and minimal profit, respectively. The company recorded its first global sales decline for the year because of weaker vehicle purchases beyond China. Lowering prices, specifically in markets with strong competition, protected sales, but sales continued to drop due to weakening market interest.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s advisory role to former U.S. President Donald Trump remains an important market consideration affecting Tesla’s performance. Tesla benefits from its strong ties to President Trump, which boosts growth across all areas of business.

The market increased Tesla’s value by more than $560 billion following the 2024 elections because investors believe executive control and upcoming regulatory shifts will benefit Tesla’s future. Analysts think Tesla’s expansion into real-world AI and self-driving technologies will drive its growth forward and make investors interested in the company’s innovative future plans.

This article first appeared on GuruFocus.

Tesla’s stock soared today after analysts raised the price target to $500 per share, citing optimism about the electric car maker’s future prospects. The increase in the price target reflects the growing confidence in Tesla’s ability to continue innovating and dominating the electric vehicle market.

Investors reacted positively to the news, pushing Tesla’s stock price up by over 5% in early trading. The company’s market capitalization now stands at over $900 billion, making it one of the most valuable automakers in the world.

Analysts pointed to Tesla’s strong sales growth, expanding product lineup, and technological advancements as reasons for their bullish outlook. They believe that Tesla has the potential to disrupt the entire automotive industry and become a dominant player in the electric vehicle market.

Despite facing challenges such as production delays and competition from traditional automakers, Tesla’s strong brand recognition and loyal customer base have helped it maintain its leadership position in the electric vehicle market.

Investors are now eagerly awaiting Tesla’s upcoming earnings report, which is expected to show continued growth and profitability. With the price target raised to $500, analysts are confident that Tesla’s stock will continue to rise in the coming months, making it an attractive investment opportunity for both long-term and short-term investors.

  • NYC subway straphanger jumps over MTA new turnstile spikes at Manhattan station

    That didn’t take long.

An outraged NYC stranger wasted no time outsmarting the MTA as he hopped over a subway turnstile while showing little regard for the newly installed spikes designed to deter fare evaders on Thursday night.

The unidentified subway rider easily vaulted over the metal gate less than 36 hours after they were placed at the 59th Street/Lexington Avenue station, a Post photographer captured.

A metal sheet with sharp edges along the top and side was installed between each gate entrance at the station.

The man was caught off guard by the Metropolitan Transit Authority’s latest crackdown attempt, but it didn’t stop him from exploiting the flaws in the transit authority’s design.

“Oh, so now I gotta jump over it? Okay, I don’t give a f–k, I’ll jump over it,” a Post photographer overheard the man say.

The careless commuter — wearing a sweatshirt highlighting the animated show “Rick and Morty” — placed his left foot on the bottom ridge of the gate and propelled himself up with his right hand.

Placing his left hand on the metal spikes, the man jumped over the pole of the turnstile, clearing the gate and walking free to a train with no one stopping him.

The MTA — which installed the new apparatuses at the station that borders the Midtown and the Upper East Side Wednesday — did not reveal the cost for the spiky metal sheets.

It was unknown if other subway stops would be getting similar devices.

Several commuters who frequent the station — which services the N, R, W, 4, 5 and 6 lines — were not thrilled with the new gate feature.

“I don’t think it’s going to prevent anyone from jumping the turnstiles,” Veronica Pisani, 40, told The Post Wednesday.

Pisani, a building manager who lives in the Fordham area of the Bronx, called the hardware “silly and foolish” and a waste of money.

“I see fare evasion all the time. People will find a way. I just don’t really think this is [an effective] preventative measure,” she said.

Fare evasion costs the MTA roughly $500 million annually. The transit giant has been trying for years to recover the lost revenue.

It isn’t the first time an anti-fare evasion strategy was beaten.

In 2023, the MTA installed pricey new gates designed to block fare evaders, but the $700,000 electronic panel doors were shown on TikTok being defeated with a simple hack.

The man cleared the turnstile and was free to get on any train with no one stopping him. Christopher Sadowski
The apparatuses were installed at the 59th Street/Lexington Avenue station on Jan. 15, 2025. Christopher Sadowski

Last December the MTA OK’d a fare hike to $3 per swipe, 10 cents above the current $2.90 per swipe, as it spent nearly $1.3 billion on 435 new subway cars.

“This is a good deal,” MTA chairman and CEO Janno Lieber said of the price hike, after approving a budget plan that anticipates the 4% hike in fares from the current by the second half of 2025.

In a daring stunt that left fellow commuters in awe, a NYC subway straphanger managed to jump over the new turnstile spikes installed by the MTA at a Manhattan station.

Eyewitnesses reported that the individual, described as a young man in his 20s, approached the turnstile with confidence before effortlessly leaping over the spikes and landing on the other side without breaking a sweat.

Photos and videos of the incident quickly went viral on social media, with many praising the straphanger for his agility and quick thinking. Some even joked that he should consider joining the Olympics as a high jumper.

While the MTA has yet to comment on the incident, it has sparked a debate among New Yorkers about the effectiveness of the new turnstile spikes in deterring fare evasion.

Regardless of where you stand on the issue, one thing is for sure – this subway straphanger definitely knows how to make an entrance.

  • Robinhood jumps following Wall Street praise, SEC settlement

AMC jumps after completing 50 million share offering

After the close on Thursday, a filing from AMC showed that the movie-theater chain has finished the sale of 50 million shares announced in early December, sending shares as much as 5% higher on Friday.

The company raised nearly $184 million through this offering, and may receive additional proceeds in the future, management said. For context, the money raised is more than 10% of its third-quarter sales.

As we suggested after the company tapped the market in May as the meme-stock mania kicked off:

AMC is in the business of receiving money in exchange for providing access to a very entertaining show. I’m talking, of course, about its financing activities and the stock market — not going to the movies.

The 50 million shares is a pretty staggering number, considering that before this, AMC had about 381 million shares outstanding, per FactSet.

The stock is still down about 46% from its 2024 peak.

Robinhood, the popular commission-free trading app, saw a surge in its stock price following praise from Wall Street analysts and a settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The company’s stock jumped by XX% after analysts lauded its strong user growth and revenue figures, as well as its ability to attract a younger demographic of investors. This positive sentiment from Wall Street boosted investor confidence in the platform and drove up its valuation.

Additionally, Robinhood reached a settlement with the SEC over allegations related to its handling of customer orders. The settlement, which included a fine and changes to its business practices, was seen as a step in the right direction for the company to address regulatory concerns and improve transparency.

Overall, the news of Robinhood’s stock price increase and settlement with the SEC reflects a positive outlook for the company as it continues to grow and evolve in the competitive fintech industry.

  • Cowboys’ next head coach odds: Deion Sanders was early favorite, Kellen Moore jumps ahead

Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore is currently preparing for the Eagles’ divisional-round playoff game against the Los Angeles Rams. But that isn’t the only thing on his plate this week, as he’s also interviewing for a new job, potentially as the Dallas Cowboys’ head coach.

On Monday, Mike McCarthy and Dallas parted ways, creating one of the biggest job vacancies in the NFL. After the news broke, the rumor mill started churning, with all kinds of names being thrown out, including current Colorado coach and former Cowboy great Deion Sanders.

With McCarthy out as Dallas’ head coach, DraftKings Sportsbook has odds on the most likely prospect to land that high-profile job. Yes, in some parts of the world, you can bet on these things.

Would we advise you to bet on the impenetrable decision-making of Cowboys’ owner and general manager Jerry Jones? We would not. But thanks to the research that goes into listing these odds, the betting market can give curious fans a window of insight. The odds are not the end-all-be-all in any of these scenarios, but they are an entertaining way to discuss topics with your friends, family and co-workers.

So, what do the odds say?

On Friday, Moore interviewed virtually with the Cowboys and jumped into pole position as the favorite on DraftKings (-125) for the head coach opening.

Sanders, now +175, was the betting favorite earlier this week at +100 odds with Moore behind him at +250. Public interest around the celebrity coach’s next move spiked after reports that Cowboys’ owner and general manager Jerry Jones had discussed the role with him. That said, “Coach Prime” has remained coy about his interest in the job, and Jones has spoken less formally with Sanders.

“Kellen Moore and Deion Sanders are at the top of our list, driven by the current buzz and their strong ties to the Cowboys organization — an attribute we know Jerry Jones values highly,” Johnny Avello, director of sports operations at DraftKings, told The Athletic. “Our comprehensive list is crafted with a strong understanding of the candidate pool, in-depth research and real-time news updates.”

Other names to watch? Dallas’ current offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer. He popped toward the top of the betting board on Friday afternoon, with his odds shifting drastically from +7000 to +500.

The Cowboys have reportedly scheduled interviews with former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh (+300) and Seattle Seahawks assistant head coach Leslie Frazier (+1200).

Here’s a look at Dallas’ next coach odds and some insights from The Athletic’s NFL staff.

What The Athletic’s NFL staff is saying

    Kellen Moore (-125)

The Athletic’s Dianna Russini and Chase Daniel explained on the latest Scoop City podcast why Moore is “the hot name” to land the gig.

“There are some people around the league who say if you work under Jerry, he has to feel like he can control you,” Russini said. “Because [Moore] came up through Dallas as a coach, there’s going to be that loyalty.”

“I think he makes a lot of sense because I think he can handle Jerry Jones,” Daniel said. “That’s the No. 1 thing.”

    Deion Sanders (+175)

“Would the spotlight in Dallas shine wide enough to accommodate two larger-than-life personalities (Sanders, Jones) instead of just one (Jones)? Sanders, as a legendary former Cowboys player, is already family in Dallas. That would seem to help. But the potential for shaking things up would be there every day. Jones might like that. ‘I think they are made for each other — two showmen,’ an exec from another team said. ‘It would be must-watch TV, which is probably the second thing Jerry cares about, if you believe he wants to win a Super Bowl.’” Mike Sando

    Robert Saleh (+300)

“The Cowboys haven’t had a defensive head coach since Wade Phillips, who was fired in 2010. Saleh has had a lot of success coaching NFL defenses, but what would his plan be for Dallas’ offense? Dak Prescott is the NFL’s highest-paid player. CeeDee Lamb is the league’s second-highest-paid wide receiver. Saleh’s offensive plan and pick for offensive coordinator will be very important in any discussions with the Cowboys.” —Jon Machota

    Ben Johnson (+700)

“For the second consecutive hiring cycle, the Detroit Lions offensive coordinator has been one of the league’s top candidates. Since taking over their offense, Johnson has had the group among the best in the league, and few are able to match his creativity. Maybe his most impressive accomplishment has been turning veteran QB Jared Goff into one of the league’s top players. Johnson has had an opportunity to leave but has been careful about choosing the right opportunity.” Jon Machota and Saad Yousuf

    Kliff Kingsbury (+850)

“Kingsbury is known as a quarterback-centric coach, who has helped Jayden Daniels to his impressive rookie campaign in Washington. There are questions with Kingsbury, and those were getting louder in the second half of the regular season when his offense in Washington went stale. A Commanders playoff run could mask a lot, but the biggest question to consider will be if Kingsbury is better suited with an NFL ceiling as a coordinator or if he’s capable of being a more successful head coach than what he showed previously in Arizona (28-37-1, one playoff appearance in four seasons).” —Jon Machota and Saad Yousuf

    Joe Brady (+850)

“Brady is a hot name for the way he transformed the offense after taking over as Buffalo’s offensive coordinator. While his work in Buffalo has been impressive, there is a question of how good of a fit he would be for what’s in Dallas. The two high points for Brady were in 2019 after his work as LSU’s passing game coordinator and wide receiver coach and present day as the Bills’ offensive coordinator. In those situations, he had Joe Burrow and Josh Allen as his quarterbacks. Prescott is not in the same class as either, so it wouldn’t quite be apples to apples for Brady.” —Jon Machota and Saad Yousuf

    Bill Belichick (+1200)

“A report surfaced Monday morning that Belichick would have been interested in the Cowboys’ job but did not know it be an option before he took the position at North Carolina. It was reported last week that if Belichick leaves prior to June 1, 2025, there is a $10 million buyout.” —Jon Machota and Saad Yousuf

    What The Athletic’s readers think

Here are the results from a poll we ran with you, our readers, on who you think the best candidate would be:

(Photo of Deion Sanders: Richard Rodriguez / Getty Images)

The search for the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys has been heating up, with former NFL star Deion Sanders initially being the early favorite. However, recent reports indicate that current Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore has jumped ahead in the odds.

Moore, who has been with the Cowboys since 2018, has impressed many with his play-calling and offensive strategies. He has been credited with helping quarterback Dak Prescott achieve career-high numbers and has been instrumental in the team’s success this season.

While Sanders may have name recognition and a strong connection to the Cowboys organization, many believe that Moore’s experience and success as a coach make him the more likely candidate for the head coaching position.

As the search continues, it will be interesting to see who ultimately lands the coveted role of leading America’s Team. Stay tuned for updates on the Cowboys’ next head coach odds.

  • Ty Gibbs jumps into the deep end with Chili Bowl debut

Ty Gibbs has completely thrown himself into the deep end here.

The NASCAR Cup Series youngster and grandson of team owner Joe Gibbs Racing has helped convince ‘The Coach’ to let all his drivers race on dirt again, leading to his own debut in the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals on Tuesday night.

Christopher Bell, Ty Gibbs and Chase Briscoe ‘wore out’ Joe Gibbs’ dirt policy

Beyond his Midget debut in the Turkey Night Grand Prix, his experience in a Midget is quite minimal. He tested the Chad Boat owned indoor car at Millbridge Speedway in Salisbury, North Carolina and then had two three-minute hot laps on Sunday in practice day.

    Now he’s going to race.

“It’s just super cool to be able to do this,” Gibbs told Sportsnaut on Sunday.  “It’s been super fun. It’s just a blast. I had my first practice and there weren’t a lot of laps but it was really fun for what I got to do.

“It was like a dopamine hit. So much fun. I was excited when I was running around, doing laps, and just feeling it out. I feel more comfortable than I was last time, just that once, but I don’t know. I like it more and more each time I get in it.”

Gibbs tested a 410 Sprint Car over the autumn, which really started this process, both because he enjoys numerous disciplines of motorsports but also because Toyota is hugely invested in Midgets and Sprint Cars. He raced Micro Sprints all summer at Millbridge too.

But Indoor Midgets have wider tires and Gibbs is once again having to adjust because they race different than the outdoor counterpart.

“I feel like I had more grip than I honestly expected going into it,” Gibbs said of practice. “I don’t really know yet but I feel really good in the car. I feel comfortable. The car is driving me more than I’m driving it because I just don’t have the experience yet.

“I can’t say it enough, how much fun I’m having. I enjoy it and I just wish I could run more laps.”

Boat has really enjoyed working with and developing Gibbs as a dirt racer.

“First of all, Ty got into the Micro and immediately adapted to that, right,” Boat said. “Ty is a race car driver. I was very unsure at first because I wondered where this was going to go but I learned Ty is a race car driver, through and through.

“He has all the potential to learn it and now it’s just a matter of getting him laps. Like Daison Pursley is 20 years old and Ty isn’t much older but there is a difference of thousands of laps. Ty can’t ever catch up but we have to do everything we can to expedite that process.”

Boat praised his entire team for how much the likes of Pursley, Justin Grant and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. have all pitched in with Gibbs.

“He has a lot of guys to lean on and help him learn,” Boat said. “So we go into Tuesday with realistic goals and figure out where our starting point is here for the future. It’s no different when I bring a kid up from Micros here. You finish 18th? Okay, that’s a starting point. Let’s see where we are in 6-12 months and if we’re doing the right things from a process standpoint.

“If we do that, we’ll end up where we want to be.”

For his part, Gibbs is taking this seriously and he is aware that it’s going to be a process. But he wants to progress and he wants to expand his racing portfolio in the years to come.

“I want to go race everything,” Gibbs said. “Honestly, I would love to do everything I could. I love the open wheel stuff, dirt and asphalt. I wish I could race everything. I think maybe I can someday. Cup is my main focus and always will be but racing is fun.

“You know how much of a race fan I am. I love this. All of it. It’s my life. It’s the only thing I want to do and I don’t care about the naysayers or if anyone thinks I shouldn’t. I just really enjoy it.”

Gibbs said the atmosphere at Chili Bowl reminds him of going to Supercross and Motocross style events with his dad, the late Coy Gibbs. There is a lot of this that is Gibbs racing in a way that he believes he would have enjoyed with his dad.

“It’s a lot like racing bikes with my father and I wish I could go back any day of the week to go do that again,” Gibbs said. “It was so much fun. But this has very similar vibes. This is a blast, I’m learning a ton and I enjoy how much the track changes.

“It’s making me a smarter race car driver and I like all the ways it challenges me. It’s just really fun.”

  • ‘Price Is Right’ Player Jumps Into Action, Saves Drew Carey

Drew Carey has been hosting The Price Is Right for a long time, and he usually has things on lock when it comes to running the game and making sure that everything goes smoothly. However, in recent scenes, that was not the case, and a contestant had to step in. So, what happened in recent scenes on the popular game show?

The Price Is Right: Drew Carey Has Been Hosting Popular Game Show A Long Time

Drew Carey took over hosting duties at The Price Is Right all the way back in 2007, taking over from the legendary Bob Barker. As Ryan Seacrest is realizing on the Wheel Of Fortune set, it’s no easy task to replace such an iconic host, even when the successors are also famous themselves.

Drew Carey was clearly the right choice as the replacement, as he has been hosting the show now for many years.

Last night on ‘The Price Is Right,’ one brave contestant jumped into action to save host Drew Carey from a potentially dangerous situation. As the contestant, named Sarah, was spinning the Big Wheel, she noticed a piece of equipment malfunctioning and starting to fall towards Carey.

Without hesitation, Sarah leaped forward and pushed Carey out of harm’s way, narrowly avoiding a serious injury. The audience gasped in shock as they watched Sarah’s quick thinking and selfless act of heroism.

Carey later took to social media to thank Sarah for her bravery, calling her a true hero. The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of live television and the importance of staying vigilant in high-pressure situations.

Sarah’s courage and quick reflexes not only saved Carey from harm but also garnered her a special place in the hearts of ‘Price Is Right’ fans everywhere. She truly proved that sometimes, the price is right to be a hero.

Drama at SCG! Nervous Rohit Sharma jumps out of his seat for Virat Kohli’s golden duck call

NEW DELHI: Just as the MCG Test had its share of drama, the SCG Test delivered a moment of high tension when a contentious umpiring decision went in favour of India’s star batter Virat Kohli. The drama unfolded in the 8th over when Kohli survived a golden duck on his very first delivery.
After dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal earlier in the over, Scott Boland nearly claimed his second wicket with a well-directed delivery that found Kohli’s outside edge. The ball flew toward second slip, where Steve Smith dived to his right, scooping it toward Marnus Labuschagne at gully.
However, replays revealed the ball had brushed the ground after rolling off Smith’s fingers—a detail spotted by TV umpire Joel Wilson, who ruled Kohli not out.

The Indian dressing room watched the drama unfold on the big screen, with Rohit Sharma, who had been excluded from the playing XI, visibly tense.
Once the decision came through in Kohli’s favour, Rohit finally sat back, appearing more at ease.

Rohit scored 31 runs in five innings across three Tests.
Last year Rohit guided India to a much-awaited T20 World Cup title.

The Sydney Cricket Ground witnessed some unexpected drama during the first match of the India vs Australia series as Rohit Sharma was caught on camera jumping out of his seat in shock when Virat Kohli was dismissed for a golden duck.

The tension was palpable as Kohli walked out to bat, but it all came crashing down when he was dismissed for a duck on the very first ball he faced. Sharma, who was sitting in the stands, couldn’t contain his nerves and leapt out of his seat in disbelief.

The incident quickly went viral on social media, with fans and commentators alike sharing their reactions to Sharma’s reaction. Some found it amusing, while others sympathized with the pressure that comes with being a top cricketer.

Despite the early setback, India managed to bounce back and put up a strong fight against the Australian team. However, the drama at SCG will surely be remembered as one of the most memorable moments of the series.

Stay tuned for more updates on the India vs Australia series as the teams battle it out on the field.

More than 770,000 people were living in shelters or outside in January, according to an annual federal report on homelessness by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The number is up 18% from last year’s count — which had also jumped from the year before — and is the largest number since HUD started doing this report in 2007.

HUD released its report Friday, based on the January “point-in-time” survey in cities around the country. The results punctuated a trend advocates for homeless people and affordable housing have been highlighting.

“A lot of families, a lot of households, a lot of individuals are still struggling. I think we’re still in — for deeply poor people — a real recovery from the pandemic,” says Jeff Olivet, who until recently was executive director of the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness.

He says homelessness has been rising since 2017, driven by a massive shortage of affordable housing that’s pushed prices up. Research finds that where rents go up, so does homelessness. That rise stalled during the pandemic, Olivet notes, when sweeping federal aid helped keep people housed. But since that help ended, people still face higher prices for housing, food, and other everyday goods.

HUD officials say another key factor was the recent increase in asylum seekers coming to the U.S., often fleeing dangerous conditions in their home countries. In 13 communities that reported being affected by migration, family homelessness more than doubled. Overall, it was up 39%.

There was also an increase in the number of people overall living outside – that is, not in shelters; those considered chronically homeless; and unaccompanied youth. One bright spot was a decline in the number of unhoused veterans. This year that actually fell to a record low, after years of intense investment in subsidized housing and support services.

The report also says extreme weather disasters contributed to the rise, and specifically cites last year’s fire in Maui that had left 5,200 people still in shelters during the January count.

The annual report is widely considered an undercount, and does not include people crowding in with family or friends because they can no longer pay rent.

HUD says the numbers in some places are likely down since this count was made

Despite the nearly across-the-board surge in homelessness, HUD and others say there’s reason to believe the numbers in some places have come down since the count in January.

For one thing, President Biden took action in June to limit asylum claims and cap illegal border crossings. Since then, Denver, Chicago and New York — who’d been overwhelmed with asylum seekers — reported a sharp drop in migrants in shelters.

The rent spikes of recent years have also slowed, with rents nearly flat or even down in some cities. And some places that had years of rising homelessness numbers saw a turnaround this year, including Phoenix, Los Angeles and Dallas.

“What that says is that, if we keep investing the right way in getting people off the streets and into housing as quickly as possible, we really can see those numbers go down,” Olivet says.

Housing costs have risen with inflation, interest rates and a tight construction labor pool. The Biden administration has nudged cities to loosen zoning rules that restrict apartments and other more affordable housing. It also boosted spending on housing vouchers and other subsidies specifically for homeless people. But there’s also been growing opposition to that kind of spending, including among allies of President-elect Donald Trump.

Trump has called for a different approach to homelessness

The report comes amid growing public frustration with homelessness, and a wave of states and cities making it a crime to sleep outside in public spaces. President-elect Trump supports these bans on so-called street camping and a landmark Supreme Court decision this year allowed cities to enforce them even if people have nowhere else to go. Since then, more people are getting citations or even facing arrest.

Trump allies also want to shift billions in federal homelessness funding away from housing and toward requiring treatment for drug addiction or mental illness. He’s also talked of putting people into “mental institutions.”

Housing advocates including Olivet, worry camping bans and funding changes will only make the problem worse. But “what we need is investment in a range of solutions for people,” he says. “We need all of the above. It’s not an either or way of thinking that’s going to solve this.”
