Rays hoping Junior Caminero’s wonderful winter is a sign of the future
In an offseason featuring challenging stadium issues and few notable roster improvements, there actually has been some encouraging news for the Rays.
Third baseman Junior Caminero is putting on quite a show in the Dominican league, hitting .440 through his first 24 games and piling up praise.
Most notably from his Escogido manager, who knows a bit about hitting — Albert Pujols.
“The energy that Junior Caminero brings is incredible. For his age (21), he is a blessing. A future Hall of Famer, God willing,” Pujols told Dominican reporters last week.
“He has a lot to learn, and I think that this league is going to help him a lot. But it is impressive what he does every night, not only at the plate but defensively as well, where he has improved a lot. And my job as manager, and for (the coaching) staff, is to try to help him to improve so that his team continues to give him that confidence and that he has a tremendous career. …
“You see part of the blessing that we have as a country, the future of Major League Baseball, Junior Caminero.”
The fans have embraced him as well, as Caminero receives attention wherever he goes — the kind usually afforded established or retired stars.
That included a recent invitation to meet with Dominican president Luis Abinader in his office during which, Caminero posted on Instagram, it was “an honor to be able to exchange ideas on issues related to the development of the country and sport.”
Caminero also visited the Rays academy to attend a high school graduation ceremony for players there.
With friends and family pushing him to play for his hometown team, Caminero suited up in mid-December. His performance in nine regular-season games was just a warmup for his dazzling run in the 20-game, round-robin league semifinals.
In his first 15 tournament games, Caminero hit.448 (26-for-58) with a .492 on-base and .793 slugging percentage for a 1.285 OPS. He drove in 14 runs, rapped 12 extra-base hits and struck out only twice.
Rays manager Kevin Cash saw Caminero play two games last weekend during a planned trip to the Dominican. He said he was impressed not only by how well Caminero was playing, but how he was doing so.
“He’s taken his offseason really serious, and we’re really proud of him for that,” Cash said.
“He’s worked hard. He looks good. He’s worked on his overall health and nutrition and taking some ownership of that. That’s what we’re really excited about.”
Also exciting, Cash said, was what he heard from Pujols, the three-time league MVP and 11-time All-Star.
Big-leaguers Christopher Morel and Junior Caminero, front row left, join team staff at last week’s high school graduation ceremony at the Rays Dominican Republic academy. [ SHARON MCCAMAN | Tampa Bay Rays ] “Basically, he said that (Caminero’s) talent is pretty undeniable,” Cash said. “Talking to Albert and their entire staff, they all said just what a good guy he was, what a good teammate. That he cares about winning. He brings a lot of energy.”

Caminero will stay with Escogido through the best-of-seven-championship series versus Licey, but won’t go if the Leones advance to the Jan. 31-Feb. 7 Caribbean Series in Mexico.
The Rays, obviously, are counting on Caminero to be a key part of their lineup.
Much of their potential for success seems based on hope — for bounce-back seasons by Josh Lowe, Christopher Morel and, potentially, Eloy Jimenez; breakouts by Jonathan Aranda, Jose Caballero, Richie Palacios and Jonny DeLuca; and good health for veterans Brandon Lowe, Yandy Diaz and newcomer Danny Jansen.
Caminero — with a .246 average and .708 OPS through his first 50 major-league games — has the talent to make a huge difference.

(The game schedule won’t change.) … The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal wrote Friday that Stuart Sternberg’s team ownership “appears headed for a crossroads” and that if he can’t “salvage” the planned new stadium deal “he should sell the club to a group that would stand a greater chance of getting a park built in Tampa, where the team would be better positioned to thrive.” Rosenthal also quoted commissioner Rob Manfred saying, “My goal is to make baseball work in the Tampa Bay region.” … Brandon Lowe was seventh in MLB Network’s ranking of top 10 second basemen. … The 7:35 p.m. start times for summer games seems late, but if it makes for fewer games starting and then being delayed by rain it will be worth it. The Tampa Bay Rays are keeping a close eye on pitching prospect Junior Caminero after his standout performance in the Dominican Winter League. The 21-year-old right-hander has been turning heads with his impressive command and dominant stuff on the mound, leading many to believe that he could be a key contributor for the Rays in the near future.Caminero, who was signed by the Rays as an international free agent in 2018, has shown significant improvement in his development over the past year. His fastball has gained velocity, touching the mid-90s consistently, and his secondary pitches have become more refined and effective.
In the winter league, Caminero posted a stellar 2.38 ERA with 30 strikeouts in 22.2 innings pitched, showcasing his ability to miss bats and keep hitters off balance. His performance has sparked excitement within the Rays organization, with many believing that he could make a meaningful impact at the major league level sooner rather than later.
While Caminero still has some room for growth and refinement in his game, the Rays are hopeful that his success in the winter league is a sign of things to come. With a strong showing in spring training, Caminero could potentially find himself on the fast track to the big leagues and become a valuable asset for the Rays in the upcoming season.
As the Rays continue to prioritize player development and grooming young talent, Caminero’s emergence as a potential impact player is a promising sign for the future of the organization. Fans can expect to see more of Junior Caminero in the coming months as he continues to make strides towards his ultimate goal of reaching the majors.

Carlo Ancelotti has insisted that Vinicius Junior is “very happy” at Real Madrid and “wants to make history” at the club amid speculation over his future.
The 24-year-old was linked with a move abroad during last year’s transfer window and The Athletic reported in August 2024 that his representatives held discussions over a possible move to the Saudi Pro League (SPL).
“I have direct information from the player, is that he is very happy here and wants to make history at Madrid,” Ancelotti told a news conference on Friday, when asked about a possible offer for Vinicius Jr, who has scored 16 goals this season, from Saudi Arabia.
“He is the same as the rest of us who are here, in that we are happy and want to make history.”
When pressed on whether Vinicius Jr would be convinced by an offer from Saudi, Ancelotti said: “We have to ask him about this offer, whether it comes or not.
“The player is the same as always, he showed it in the last game (against Red Bull Salzburg). It’s good for him. He can take advantage of the time he hasn’t been able to play to arrive fresh in April.”

Vinicius Jr brings up Real Madrid century – but will (another) booking prove costly?
Ancelotti dismissed suggestions that Madrid play better without Vinicius Jr, saying: “They have forgotten that we won the Champions League in Paris (2022) and London (2024) with Vinicius Jr, who is an undisputed starter, without a doubt.”

Vinicius Junior ‘wants to make history’ at Real Madrid – Carlo AncelottiReal Madrid’s young star Vinicius Junior is eager to leave a lasting legacy at the club, according to manager Carlo Ancelotti. The Brazilian forward has been in scintillating form this season, and Ancelotti believes he has the potential to become a club legend.
In a recent interview, Ancelotti praised Vinicius’ work ethic and determination, stating that he has a hunger to succeed and make history at Real Madrid. The Italian manager also highlighted Vinicius’ impressive performances on the pitch, noting his pace, skill, and goal-scoring ability.
Ancelotti’s comments come at a time when Vinicius has been one of Real Madrid’s standout players, helping the team to climb to the top of the La Liga table. With his eye-catching displays, the 21-year-old has already endeared himself to the club’s fans and established himself as a key player in the squad.
As Vinicius continues to impress at Real Madrid, it is clear that he has big ambitions for his future at the club. With the guidance of Ancelotti and the support of his teammates, there is no doubt that he has the potential to achieve great things and write his name in the history books of one of the world’s most prestigious football clubs.

Vinicius Junior unsure of Real Madrid future as Saudi Arabia prepare eye-watering contract offer
Vinicius Junior unsure of Real Madrid future as Saudi Arabia prepare eye-watering contract offer One of the biggest transfer stories of 2025 could involve Vinicius Junior, although Real Madrid will be hoping that this isn’t the case. The Brazilian superstar has been the subject of strong transfer speculation in recent months, with Saudi Arabia preparing to make a world-record offer in order to bring in to the Middle East.
Earlier this week, Vinicius publicly committed his future to Real Madrid, although there is less certainly about the situation from behind the scenes. According to Relevo, the 24-year-old’s intentions are not known by anyone at the club, and even within his entourage too.
It was reported during the summer that Vinicius has been tempted by the eye-watering offer that Saudi Arabia has put on the table. It’s been reported that they will offer him a contract worth €1m per week, making him one of the highest paid players in world football – alongside his idol, Cristiano Ronaldo.
Vinicius Junior’s future at Real Madrid is not certain (Photo by HAITHAM AL-SHUKAIRI / AFP) Saudi Arabia has been in regular contact with Vinicius’ representatives, and they are believed to be confident of convincing him to make the bold move in the summer. However, Real Madrid equally believe that there is very little chance that their star player moves on from the Santiago Bernabeu.
Despite this, contract talks are planned between the two parties, as Real Madrid aim to end the matter once and for all. As per the report, these will take place over the coming months, with a view to an agreement being reached by the summer. Vinicius is open to signing a new deal, although in order to do so, he wants to become the club’s highest-paid player.
It will be very interesting to follow Vinicius’ case from now until the summer. They are very confident that there will be no move away in the summer (or for many, many years), but there is definitely some uncertainty about the situation, and this will surely mean that nervousness creeps in.
Vinicius Junior, the young Brazilian starlet currently playing for Real Madrid, is reportedly unsure of his future with the Spanish giants as Saudi Arabia prepares to make him an eye-watering contract offer. The 21-year-old winger has been a key player for Real Madrid since joining the club in 2018, but has recently found himself in and out of the starting lineup under manager Carlo Ancelotti. This has led to speculation about his future at the club, with several top clubs around Europe reportedly interested in signing him.
However, the latest twist in the saga comes from Saudi Arabia, who are said to be preparing a massive contract offer to lure Vinicius away from Real Madrid. The offer is rumored to be worth a staggering amount, which could make it very tempting for the young Brazilian to consider a move to the Middle East.
It remains to be seen whether Vinicius will ultimately decide to stay at Real Madrid or if he will be swayed by the lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia. Either way, it seems that his future at the club is far from certain, and fans will be eagerly watching to see how this situation unfolds. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
