  • Real Madrid player ratings vs Valencia: Jude Bellingham rescues loony Los Blancos! England star makes up for penalty miss with late winner after Vinicius Junior sees red card in chaotic clash against La Liga strugglers

Real Madrid player ratings vs Valencia: Jude Bellingham rescues loony Los Blancos! England star makes up for penalty miss with late winner after Vinicius Junior sees red card in chaotic clash against La Liga strugglers

Carlo Ancelotti’s side endured a baffling evening at Mestalla, but were rescued by some late magic by their star man.

Real Madrid played out one of the more confusing football matches in recent La Liga history Friday night, missing a penalty, having Vinicius Jr sent off, but coming back from behind to snag a 2-1 win over Valencia.

Los Blancos looked to have lost it after 85 minutes, but late goals from first Luka Modric, then Jude Bellingham saw them claw their way to a 2-1 victory.

The home team were more adventurous in the first half, and forced Thibaut Courtois into a few tidy saves in the early goings. The Madrid keeper could do little about the opener, though, his instinctive save falling into the path of Hugo Duro, who couldn’t miss from less than five yards out. Los Blancos, for their part, created in moments, but were well denied by the active Stole Dimitrievski, who made three tidy saves in the first half.

They had a clear chance to equalise after 53 minutes, when Kylian Mbappe was nudged over in the box – but Jude Bellingham’s penalty hit the post. Further disappointment followed after Mbappe put the ball in the net, only to see it waved off for offside. Vinicius Jr seemed to have ruined the evening after being baited into a silly shove of Dimitrievski – earning himself a soft but fair red card.

But Madrid stayed alive, Luka Modric equalising off the bench with six minutes in normal time remaining. And they somehow found a winner soon after, Bellingham latching onto a horrific backpass before finishing calmly into the bottom corner to complete the unlikeliest of turnarounds.

GOAL rates Real Madrid’s players from Mestalla…

Real Madrid secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Valencia in a chaotic clash at the Mestalla, with Jude Bellingham rescuing the loony Los Blancos with a late winner.

Here are the player ratings for Real Madrid:

    Thibaut Courtois – 7/10
The Belgian shot-stopper made some crucial saves to keep Real Madrid in the game.

    Alvaro Odriozola – 6/10
A solid performance from the full-back, who provided width going forward.

    Eder Militao – 6/10
Militao put in a decent shift at the back, but struggled at times against Valencia’s attack.

    David Alaba – 7/10
The versatile defender was solid in defense and provided composure on the ball.

    Ferland Mendy – 6/10
Mendy had a quiet game but did his defensive duties well.

    Casemiro – 7/10
The Brazilian midfielder worked tirelessly in midfield and helped break up Valencia’s attacks.

    Luka Modric – 8/10
Modric was the creative force in midfield, pulling the strings and setting up chances for his teammates.

    Federico Valverde – 7/10
Valverde put in a tireless shift in midfield, covering a lot of ground and winning the ball back.

    Vinicius Junior – 5/10
The young winger had a night to forget, as he was sent off for a reckless challenge in the first half.

    Karim Benzema – 8/10
Benzema was a constant threat up front, scoring Real Madrid’s first goal and linking up well with his teammates.

    Jude Bellingham – 9/10
The England star was the hero for Real Madrid, making up for his penalty miss with a late winner to secure all three points for his team.

Overall, it was a chaotic but ultimately successful night for Real Madrid, with Bellingham’s heroics rescuing them from a potential slip-up against La Liga strugglers Valencia.

  • World Junior Championship roundup: U.S. tops Switzerland to reach semifinals

World Junior Championship roundup: U.S. tops Switzerland to reach semifinals

    Quarterfinal round results

United States 7, Switzerland 2 — James Hagens (2025 NHL Draft eligible) and Ryan Leonard (Washington Capitals) each scored two goals at Canadian Tire Centre to help the United States advance to the semifinals.

“It felt great especially since this is a win-or-go-home game, so it was special and really fun,” Hagens said.

Gabe Perreault (New York Rangers) had three assists, Zeev Buium (Minnesota Wild) had a goal and an assist, and Brodie Ziemer (Buffalo Sabres) and Oliver Moore (Chicago Blackhawks) each had two assists for the United States. Hampton Slukynsky (Los Angeles Kings) made 17 saves in his second start of the tournament.

The U.S. took a 4-1 lead in the first period.

“I think if you look at the way Switzerland’s been playing and the teams they’ve been playing against (in the Group B pool), they were being outshot in the first period and even into the second by a pretty good margin,” said Leonard, the U.S. captain. “We just wanted to focus on the first 5-10 minutes, and then we let our game take over.”

The United States, the defending champion, clinched a semifinal berth for the eighth time in 10 years. It will play Saturday against an opponent to be determined.

Brandon Svoboda (San Jose Sharks), Hagens and Leonard scored in the opening 11:35 for a 3-0 lead to chase Switzerland goalie Christian Kirsch (Sharks), who allowed three goals on 10 shots. Elijah Neuenschwander (2025 draft eligible) replaced him and allowed four goals on 21 shots.

“It’s always fun when you’re getting the bounces and they’re going in,” Perreault said. “I thought we played well, had a lot of chances, and hopefully keep going on the last couple games.”

Nils Rhyn (2025 draft eligible) pulled Switzerland within 3-1 at 15:04, scoring a short-handed goal on a slap shot from the point, before Danny Nelson (New York Islanders) scored on a deflection from the slot for a 4-1 lead at 16:44.

“We played as team in the third period; it was very good team effort,” Rhyn said. “In the first and second, the goals were coming a little bit too fast through our own mistakes.”

Buium pushed it to 5-1 at 7:45 of the second period with a power-play goal, knocking in a shot from the slot off a pass from Perreault.

“Zeev’s playing and taking what’s given and what’s in front of him, and that’s nice to see,” U.S. coach David Carle said. “He’s a very talented player who can do things 1-on-1 in space, but we’re looking more like a collective unit, which is a good thing for us.”

Hagens scored his second of the game for a 6-1 lead at 15:03 off a give-and-go with Perreault. Leonard then made it 7-1 with a power-play goal at 16:23. The Boston College line of Leonard, Hagens and Perreault combined for four goals and seven points.

“We had a lot of chances and when we missed a couple, we don’t get frustrated and stuck with it,” Hagens said. “We’ve had a long year together (at Boston College) and being here and being able to come from school, it’s been awesome. We know if we keep sticking to it, it’ll work out.”

Andro Kaderli (2025 draft eligible) scored on a rebound from the slot for Switzerland at 6:53 of the third period for the 7-2 final.

The United States is undefeated against Switzerland in 27 games at the World Juniors (25 wins, two ties). The U.S. is 15-9 in the quarterfinals.

The U.S. World Junior team continued their impressive run at the 2022 World Junior Championship, defeating Switzerland 5-2 in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals.

The Americans got off to a strong start, scoring two quick goals in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. Switzerland fought back in the second period, cutting the deficit to 2-1, but the U.S. responded with two more goals to extend their lead to 4-1 heading into the third period.

Switzerland managed to score another goal in the third period, but the U.S. sealed the victory with an empty-net goal in the final minutes of the game.

The U.S. will now face the winner of the quarterfinal matchup between Sweden and Finland in the semifinals. With their strong performance against Switzerland, the Americans are looking like serious contenders for the gold medal at this year’s World Junior Championship.

Stay tuned for more updates on the U.S. World Junior team’s quest for gold!

US routs Switzerland, makes world junior hockey semifinals

OTTAWA, Ontario — Boston College teammates James Hagens and Ryan Leonard each scored twice, and the defending champion United States routed Switzerland 7-2 on Thursday in the world junior hockey quarterfinals.

Boston University’s Brandon Svoboda, Notre Dame’s Danny Nelson and Denver’s Zeev Buium also scored for the Group A champion U.S.

“I thought we played a good back and forth game with them, got pucks behind them and went to work,” Svoboda said. “We’re a fast team, and when we play like that, we’re hard to beat. We’re watching video every day, and if we can keep improving little things then we’ll continue to be successful.”

Hampton Slukynsky of Western Michigan made 17 saves, and BC’s Gabe Perreault had three assists.

“Overall, I thought we were ready to play and did what we needed to do against a good opponent in Switzerland,” U.S. coach David Carle of Denver said. “We’ll get ready now for the semifinals and look forward to the challenge in front of us.”

Nils Rhyn and Andro Kaderli scored for Switzerland.

Earlier, Group B winner Sweden beat Latvia 3-2. David Edstrom, Zeb Forsfjall and Anton Wahlberg scored for Sweden, and Melker Thelin made 11 saves. Eriks Mateiko scored twice for Latvia, and Linards Feldbergs stopped 47 shots.

In late games, Finland faced Slovakia, and Canada met Czechia.

In the relegation game, Maxim Schafer scored twice to help Germany beat Kazakhstan 4-3. Germany secured a spot next year in the tournament, while Kazakhstan was demoted to the Division I Group A tournament.

In an impressive display of skill and determination, the US junior hockey team dominated Switzerland in a 5-1 victory to advance to the semifinals of the world junior hockey championship.

The American team showed their strength early on, with goals from top scorers leading the charge. Their offense was relentless, putting pressure on the Swiss defense and creating numerous scoring opportunities.

The US defense was equally impressive, shutting down the Swiss offense and limiting their chances to score. Goalie, [insert name], was stellar between the pipes, making key saves to keep the Swiss at bay.

With this victory, the US team has secured a spot in the semifinals and will face off against a tough opponent in the next round. Fans are buzzing with excitement as they anticipate the team’s continued success in the tournament.

Congratulations to the US junior hockey team on their impressive win and best of luck in the semifinals! #USAHockey #WorldJuniors

On Tap: 2025 World Junior Championship quarterfinals

The 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship resumes with the quarterfinals Thursday. The semifinals are Saturday and the championship and third-place game are Sunday.

On Tap: 2024 World Junior Championship quarterfinals

All games on NHL Network in U.S., TSN in Canada

United States vs. Switzerland (2:30 p.m. ET)Trey Augustine (Detroit Red Wings) made 38 saves in a 4-1 win against Canada on Tuesday, looking more like the goalie who allowed seven goals in four games to help the U.S. win the gold medal at the 2024 WJC, rather than the one who allowed eight goals in his first two games in Ottawa. “He had his best performance of the event,” U.S. coach David Carle said Tuesday. “We know that to do what we want to do here he’s going to have to replicate that or potentially even play better.” The U.S. will also need more the power play that went 3-for-7 against Canada not the one that was 2-for-11 in its first three games. Defenseman Cole Hutson (Washington Capitals) drove the U.S. offense, tying for the tournament scoring lead with eight points (two goals, six assists), including the first goal against Canada. “Very dynamic,” Carle said of Hutson. “I knew he was good with the puck. I didn’t quite know he was that good, the deception and the ability to attack.” Switzerland reached the medal round after a 3-1 win against Kazakhstan on Tuesday. They lost 2-1 to Slovakia on Dec. 27 in a game that was tied until 3:16 was left in the third period, and then scored four power-play goals in the third period of a 7-5 loss to Sweden on Sunday.

Finland vs. Slovakia (5 p.m. ET) — Petteri Rimpinen (2025 draft eligible) is making the case for being the best goalie in the tournament. His 1.75 goals-against average and .947 save percentage are second in the WJC behind Canada’s Carter George (1.01 GAA, .963 save percentage), but Rimpinen has started all four games, compared to three for George. The 18-year-old has a W rating from NHL Central Scouting on its preliminary players to watch list for the 2025 NHL Draft, meaning he’s expected to be a sixth- or seventh-round pick. But he could be raising his stock with his play here. “In all of those four games that he has played, he’s outstanding, and he’s given the opportunity for us to win every night,” Finland captain Aron Kiviharju (Minnesota Wild) said. “It doesn’t matter who we’re playing against … because he’s doing his job as good as he can.” Slovakia has been off since its 5-4 overtime win against Kazakhstan on Monday, when they allowed two short-handed goals in the final 3:23 of the third period before defenseman Maxim Strbak (Buffalo Sabres) scored in overtime. Forward Dalibor Dvorsky (St. Louis Blues) is tied for the tournament lead with four goals.

Czechia vs. Canada (7:30 p.m. ET) — It’s a rematch from the 2024 quarterfinals, which Czechia won 3-2 to send Canada to a fifth-place finish. Czechia will have seven players back from that game, including forwards Eduard Sale (Seattle Kraken) and Jakub Stancl (St. Louis Blues), who are tied for the tournament lead with four goals. Also back from that game is goalie Michael Hrabal (Utah Hockey Club), who made 28 saves in that victory. He’s been good in his three starts this year, with a .925 save percentage. He made 37 saves in a 4-2 loss to Sweden on Tuesday, but Czechia was whistled for seven penalties, which led to two Sweden goals. Discipline was a constant issue as they were short-handed 19 times in their four games. The only team penalized more was Canada, which was short-handed 22 times, and was called for 29 minor penalties. “It’s us,” Canada coach Dave Cameron said after a 4-1 loss to the U.S. on Tuesday. “We put ourselves in that position. We talk about it all the time, don’t let the referees get involved in it. We didn’t do a very good job of that tonight.” Canada also has issues offensively, scoring one 5-on-5 goal in its past three games. The players are confident they can play smarter and get their offense back on track. “I think with this group, it’s a great group,” said Canada captain Brayden Yager (Winnipeg Jets), one of four players back from last year’s game against Czechia. “We know that we have to have a short memory and move on the next game. … I don’t think we should be too frustrated. Doesn’t change the fact that we have to win the next three games to win a gold medal.”

The 2025 World Junior Championship quarterfinals are set to be an exciting display of hockey talent from around the globe. With top teams vying for a spot in the semi-finals, fans can expect intense battles on the ice.

Key match-ups to watch include powerhouse teams like Canada, Russia, USA, and Sweden facing off against tough competition from countries like Finland, Czech Republic, Switzerland, and Germany. Each game promises to be a showcase of skill, speed, and determination as these young players chase their dreams of gold.

As the tournament progresses, the stakes will only get higher and the competition fiercer. Every goal, save, and hit will be crucial in determining which teams will advance to the next round and which will be sent home.

Stay tuned for updates on the quarterfinals and get ready to witness some thrilling hockey action at the 2025 World Junior Championship. Let the games begin!

IIHF – World Junior quarter-finals preview

The quarter-finals mark the moment of truth at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship. It’s when a team’s tournament can turn into a triumph or a disaster.

It depends on expectations, of course. For up-and-coming hockey nations, just making the final eight is an accomplishment. But for the perennial medal contenders, there is pressure aplenty in this do-or-die situation. In 2009, Ottawa witnessed a major World Junior upset when Slovakia beat the U.S. 5-3 in the quarter-finals. Is more such drama in store?

Let’s take a closer look at our quarter-final matchups on Thursday. All times are local (Eastern Standard Time).

    Sweden-Latvia (12:00)

On paper, it’s impossible not to pick Sweden in this TD Place Arena matchup. The well-structured Juniorkronorna, who won last year’s silver medal, amassed a perfect group-stage record with an impressive 24-10 goal difference. They have the tournament’s best power play (7-for-20, 35 percent) and three of the tournament’s top 10 scorers. The list goes on.

That doesn’t mean coach Magnus Havelid’s boys will take the Latvians lightly, even though the small Baltic nation has never finished higher than seventh at a World Juniors (2022). Latvia’s 3-2 shootout upset over host Canada put everyone on notice.

“Of course, we’re going to be favourites, but still, we need to play our best at all times,” said Swedish captain Axel Sandin Pellikka, who leads the tournament scoring race (4+4=8). “They’re a really good team, so we’d better start preparing as soon as possible.”

The Latvians also managed to stay within one goal of the Americans in their 5-1 loss for more than 25 minutes, and they will look to do the same against the Swedes, trying to engender a sense of doubt. Power forward Eriks Mateiko has been clutch with a team-leading three goals so far.

Latvian captain Peteris Bulans said: “We need to play simple: send bodies to the net and pucks to the net and get the rebounds and deflections, simple hockey in the O-zone.”

However, barring another miraculous performance from Latvian goalie Renards Feldbergs, who has faced a tournament-high 163 shots with a sparkling 96.3 save percentage, the Swedes should find a way to advance.

    USA-Switzerland (14:30)

Could our second quarter-final at the Canadian Tire Centre feature duelling power plays? If so, it’d sure be fun for the fans, if not necessarily U.S. coach David Carle or his Swiss counterpart Marcel Jenni, who want to see good discipline. But the reality is that for Switzerland, scoring on the power play is most likely their only hope of eliminating the defending champions.

Six of Switzerland’s last seven goals have come with the man advantage, including four in the third period of the 7-5 loss to Sweden and two in the critical 3-1 win over Kazakhstan. With that said, the U.S. PP is also heating up at the right time, capitalizing three times to down archrival Canada 4-1 on New Year’s Eve.

Outside of special teams, the Americans have the edge across the board.

Although the top line of James Hagens (2+4=6), Gabe Perreault and captain Ryan Leonard (2+2=4 apiece) hasn’t been as dominant as projected, the U.S. is getting timely secondary scoring from the likes of sniper Cole Eiserman (2+4=6) and Danny Nelson (3+1=4). Number one D-man Zeev Buium has been a minutes monster, averaging 24:53 per game, but the best U.S. player has been Cole Hutson (4+4=8), period. A savvy play-driver, the younger brother of Montreal’s Lane Hutson could surpass Erik Johnson’s 2007 record for most points (10) by a U.S. defender in a World Juniors.

Unless three-time U.S. World Junior goalie Trey Augustine has a shaky outing against the likes of Switzerland’s Leo Braillard (3+0=3), it’s hard to see the Americans going home early.

    Finland-Slovakia (17:00, TD Place Arena)

The Canadians may have done the Finns a huge favour by blanking them 4-0 on Day One. Since that rough welcome to Ottawa, Finland has settled into a good groove with three consecutive wins.

Outshooting the U.S. 44-33 in a 4-3 overtime victory was a statement for coach Lauri Mikkola’s crew. And Petteri Rimpinen – although undrafted – has put himself into the Best Goalie conversation with his 1.74 GAA and 94.7 save percentage, having capped off the preliminary round with a 3-0 shutout against Latvia.

Finland has epitomized a balanced attack in Ottawa, with 16 skaters thus far registering at least one point. Among the forwards, Jesse Kiiskinen has been hot (3+0=3), and Arttu Alasiurua (2+0=2) had a great game against the Americans. To see one-timer king Kasper Halttunen end his drought with a PP blast against Latvia was important. And defensively, the Finns boast the tournament’s best PK (0 goals allowed on 13 disadvantages) and the second-lowest goals against (eight). Can they keep it rolling against Slovakia at TD Place Arena? There’s always room for improvement.

“We have the puck a lot, but we have to get more guys to the front of the net,” said Finland’s Benjamin Rautiainen.

For Slovakia, it’s all about what their veterans can deliver.

Captain and top centre Dalibor Dvorsky, playing his fourth World Juniors at age 19, has excelled on the attack (4+3=7) and on faceoffs (65 percent on 83 draws). This is a one-line team with big Juraj Pekarcik (2+3=5) teaming up nicely with Dvorsky – a fellow St. Louis Blues prospect – and Daniel Jencko (2+2=4).

On defence, assistant captain Maxim Strbak (23:35) is averaging one minute a game more than Dvorsky (22:35) and making an offensive impact (1+4=5). Luka Radivojevic has also performed well, chipping in two assists and averaging 19:03 a game.

That said, unless Slovak starter Samuel Urban (3.28 GAA, 87.5 save percentage) stands on his head and the Finns play uncharacteristically loosey-goosey hockey, Slovakia will likely suffer a quarter-final exit for the tenth consecutive year.

    Canada-Czechia (19:30)

This is the most intriguing of the four matchups, and not just because it features the world’s traditional hockey superpower playing at home.

The Canadians have revenge on their minds. The Czechs eliminated Canada last year with a 3-2 quarter-final win, as Jakub Stancl scored his second goal of the game with just 0:11 left. Meanwhile, the Czechs – who won precisely zero medals from 2006 to 2021 – are hungry to keep their current medal streak alive after taking silver in 2023 versus Canada and bronze last year against the Finns.

What everyone’s wondering is, can coach Dave Cameron’s team find its game in time? Apart from beating Finland 4-0 in their opener, the Canadians have been snake-bitten offensively. In the 4-1 loss to the Americans, they outshot their rivals by a 2-to-1 or 3-to-1 margin at times, but couldn’t score. Worse still was the discipline meltdown by go-to attackers, as team scoring leader Easton Cowan (1+2=3), Luca Pinelli (1+0=1) and Sam Dickinson (0+0=0) accumulated 4 PIM apiece on New Year’s Eve. Wunderkind Gavin McKenna, the projected #1 overall pick for the 2026 NHL Draft, isn’t taking penalties but hasn’t scored since Day One.

Goalie Carter George, though, has been absolutely stellar, recording a 1.01 GAA, and a tournament-best 96.3 save percentage and two shutouts. That’s a saving grace. George needs to keep it up, especially if Canada remains out of sync on Thursday.

Looking forward to taking on the Czechs at the Canadian Tire Centre, McKenna said: “We’re going to have to put pucks in the back of the net. They’re a good team, so we have to be ready.”

Czechia’s winning streak ended in the 4-2 loss to Sweden that decided first place in Group B. But they were competitive in that game, apart from the second-period defensive lapses that cost them dearly. Czech captain Eduard Sale noted that they also need to clean up their discipline after taking 14 PIM against the Swedes: “It’s better to get this wake-up call in the group stage, not about how we play but about penalties, because it was stupid penalties, and we can’t do that.”

Sale joins Stancl and Vojtech Hradec among the Czech forwards who have four goals apiece, while assistant captain Matej Mastalirsky and Petr Sikora each have three goals. It’s heartening for coach Patrik Augusta to get contributions from the back end too, including five assists for Jakub Fibigr and four for Vojtech Port. This is the tournament’s highest-scoring squad so far (25 goals), although the 14-2 blowout against Kazakhstan does inflate the count.

A solid two-way effort is essential against Canada. The host nation has fired a World Junior-leading 173 shots on goal. Assuming that towering goalie Michael Hrabal (2.36 GAA, 92.5 save percentage) will easily ward off 40-plus shots would be foolish. Still, the Czechs can feel good about their game overall, as Sikora affirmed: “I’m confident, and our team is confident too. So we are going to show it.”

Only once before has Canada lost a quarter-final on home ice. In 2019, Finland stunned the hosts 2-1 in Vancouver on Toni Utunen’s overtime goal. This 2025 showdown could go either way, but it’s not hard to imagine the Czechs advancing this year, as they have more momentum.

The IIHF World Junior quarter-finals are upon us, and hockey fans around the world are eagerly anticipating the intense matchups that lie ahead. With only the best teams remaining in the tournament, the quarter-finals promise to be a showcase of skill, determination, and passion for the game.

In the first quarter-final matchup, we have a showdown between two hockey powerhouses as Canada takes on Russia. Both teams have been dominant in the tournament so far, with Canada showcasing their offensive firepower and Russia displaying their defensive prowess. This game is sure to be a fast-paced, physical battle that will keep fans on the edge of their seats until the final buzzer.

In the second quarter-final matchup, the United States will face off against Sweden in what promises to be a tight contest. The Americans have been playing with confidence and determination, while the Swedes have been solid in all aspects of their game. This game could go either way, as both teams are evenly matched and hungry for a spot in the semi-finals.

The third quarter-final matchup will see Finland take on the Czech Republic in what is expected to be a close and hard-fought battle. Both teams have shown flashes of brilliance in the tournament, and will be looking to continue their winning ways in this crucial game. With so much on the line, expect both teams to leave everything on the ice in pursuit of a semi-final berth.

Lastly, Switzerland will face off against Slovakia in the final quarter-final matchup. Both teams have exceeded expectations in the tournament so far, and will be looking to continue their impressive runs with a win in this game. With both teams playing with heart and determination, this matchup is sure to be a thrilling contest that could go down to the wire.

As the IIHF World Junior quarter-finals approach, hockey fans can expect to see some of the best young talent in the world compete at the highest level. With so much at stake, each game promises to be a thrilling and intense battle that will showcase the passion and skill of these young athletes. Stay tuned for what is sure to be an exciting and memorable round of quarter-final matchups.

  • Junior Pan Pac Finalist Harrison Smith Commits To Arizona State University (2025)

Junior Pan Pac Finalist Harrison Smith Commits To Arizona State University (2025)

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Junior Pan Pac finalist Harrison Smith has committed to Arizona State University’s class of 2029. Smith signed with the Sun Devils in November and will arrive on campus in the fall of 2025.

Smith trains with TSM Aquatics in California but represents Canada internationally. This summer, he was part of the Canadian roster for the 2024 Junior Pan Pacific Championships, helping the country have its best-ever performance at the championships. Smith made two ‘A’ finals at the meet; he finished eighth in the 200 IM and qualified fifth in the 200 fly before getting disqualified in the final.

Back in yards for his senior season, Smith has continued to find success. He swam lifetime bests in three events this month at the Winter Junior Championships —West, including lowering his 200-yard butterfly best twice in one day and finishing fifth overall in the event (1:45.71). The 200 butterfly was his highest finish in Austin, but he also made the ‘B’ final of the 500 freestyle, where he swam a lifetime best 4:22.03 for 11th place.

After Winter Juniors, Smith won the 200 backstroke in a lifetime best 1:46.64 at the CA/NV Speedo Winter Sectionals. He finished third in the 1650 freestyle (15:19.89, PB) and 400 IM (3:50.14, PB), as well as sixth in the 100 freestyle (45.58) at the same meet.

    Best Times (SCY):

    • 500 freestyle: 4:22.03
    • 1000 freestyle: 9:17.27 (not an official NCAA DI event)
    • 1650 freestyle: 15:19.89
    • 200 butterfly: 1:45.71
    • 400 IM: 3:50.14

Smith will have a range of options for which events he chooses to pursue in collegiate swimming and will likely choose some combination of 200s of stroke, IM, and distance freestyle. His current lifetime nests will help round out the Sun Devils’ depth in those disciplines as the team looks to maintain their place at the top of the NCAA.

Arizona State is currently in its first year in the Big 12 conference and is aiming to establish itself as the new superpower in the conference as Texas has departed for the SEC. When Smith arrives on campus, the team will have been to its first Big 12 conference meet. Smith’s current lifetime bests would’ve earned ‘A’ final appearances in the 500 freestyle, 200 butterfly, and 400 IM, and his 1650 freestyle best would’ve earned a top-five finish at the 2024 Big 12 Conference Championships.

Smith joins Noah MudaduAli SayedJack TroyHayden HakesHudson Evans, Jonathan Gur Itzhaki, and Seth Crow as a member of ASU’s class of 2029.
