Phoenix’s Jusuf Nurkic, Dallas’ Naji Marshall trade swings as 3 ejected in altercation
PHOENIX — Phoenix Suns center Jusuf Nurkic and Dallas Mavericks forwards Naji Marshall and P.J Washington were ejected from Friday night’s game after a brief fight between the players.
Nurkic was called for an offensive foul while being guarded by Daniel Gafford with 9:02 left in the third quarter before the altercation quickly escalated. Nurkic confronted Marshall before taking an open-handed swing at his head and then Marshall responded with a punch. Washington quickly shoved Nurkic to the ground before the teams were separated.
The referees reviewed the play before deciding that all three players would be ejected.
The Mavericks were leading 60-44 at the time of the fight.
In a wild game between the Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks, tensions boiled over as three players were ejected following a heated altercation. The incident took place in the second quarter when Suns center Jusuf Nurkic and Mavericks forward Naji Marshall got into a heated exchange that quickly escalated into a physical altercation. Both players had to be separated by teammates and officials, but not before a few punches were thrown. As a result, Nurkic and Marshall were both ejected from the game, along with Mavericks guard Jalen Brunson.
The ejections had a significant impact on the game, as both Nurkic and Marshall were key players for their respective teams. The Suns were forced to adjust their lineup without Nurkic’s presence in the paint, while the Mavericks had to make do without Marshall’s scoring and defensive abilities.
The altercation also sparked a debate among fans and analysts about the level of physicality in today’s NBA and whether the league needs to do more to crack down on on-court altercations.
Despite the ejections and the drama, the game continued, with the Suns ultimately coming out on top with a narrow victory. However, the fallout from the altercation is sure to linger as both teams and the league office review the incident and determine if any further disciplinary action is necessary. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

Phoenix Suns “Actively Shopping” Jusuf Nurkic In Trade Talks
PHOENIX, ARIZONA – JANUARY 21: Jusuf Nurkic #20 of the Phoenix Suns handles the ball during the … [+]
NBA trade season has officially arrived with December 15th recently crossing the calendar, which means most players who signed in the offseason are eligible to now move elsewhere.
For the Phoenix Suns, one of the most aggressive teams in the marketplace truly all-in on winning a championship immediately due to their financial commitments, starting center Jusuf Nurkic is being dangled across the Association in exploratory trade talks.
According to Duane Rankin of the Arizona Republic, the Suns are “actively shopping” Nurkic hoping to find a deal before the February 6th trade deadline. Since the summer, Phoenix has been open to trading Nurkic, a league source confirmed to Forbes Sports.
Nurkic’s fit in Phoenix has been questioned since his arrival in 2023 in a deal that sent out former No. 1 overall pick Deandre Ayton to the Portland Trail Blazers. So far this season, Nurkic is averaging 9.0 points, 9.7 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 0.6 blocks on a pedestrian 55.4 true shooting percentage.
It’s been apparent that Phoenix is missing an athletic, defense-first center in place of Nurkic’s plodding style of play. And thus far, the advanced metrics prove Nurkic isn’t hold much on-court value to the Suns’ overall success.
Nurkic On Court (545 minutes): 110.6 OffRtg, 115.1 DefRtg, -4.6 NetRtg
Nurkic Off Court (857 minutes): 114.2 OffRtg, 114.3 DefRtg, -0.1 NetRtg
Simply removing Nurkic from the equation, Phoenix’s offensive rating jumps from No. 21 to No. 9 in team-wide rankings. Simply put, the veteran big man has been detrimental to them on that end of the floor more often than not.
As the Suns survey the trade market to find a taker for Nurkic, it’s important to remember apron rules that directly impact them. Since they are over both the first and second aprons, Phoenix is unable to aggregate salaries together while also not taking back more money than they send out in any deal.
It’s a complicated situation for Phoenix, especially when Nurkic’s value is at an all-time low due to his recent stretch of play. Realistically, Phoenix will have to attach either their 2031 first-round pick or potentially all of their remaining second-round draft capital.
With Nurkic making $18.2 million this season, Phoenix can bring back a real difference-maker in any trade. Whether it be a center or wing is to be determined, but expect more frontcourt help on the way if they ship out an entrenched starter.
Attempting to find a trade partner for Nurkic, keep an eye on a rebuilding situation willing to take on his large salary in exchange for draft picks. The Brooklyn Nets, Detroit Pistons, Portland Trail Blazers, and Washington Wizards all fit the billing as potential teams willing to help facilitate Nurkic’s exit from Phoenix.
Ironically enough, three of those options have attainable big man to replace their current starter: Isaiah Stewart (Detroit), Robert Williams III (Portland) and Jonas Valanciunas (Washington).
Phoenix will be one of the top teams to monitor over the next six weeks. Nurkic becomes one of their best bets to land an instant impact addition, thanks in large part due to his salary and not on-court production.
The Phoenix Suns are reportedly “actively shopping” center Jusuf Nurkic in trade talks, according to league sources. Nurkic, who was acquired by the Suns in a trade with the Portland Trail Blazers last season, is currently in the final year of his contract and the Suns are looking to move him before the trade deadline.Nurkic has been a solid contributor for the Suns this season, averaging 11.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. However, with the emergence of Deandre Ayton as the team’s starting center, Nurkic’s role has been reduced and the Suns are looking to upgrade other areas of their roster.
There are several teams reportedly interested in acquiring Nurkic, including the Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers, and Miami Heat. The Suns are said to be seeking a combination of young players and draft picks in exchange for Nurkic.
It remains to be seen whether the Suns will be able to find a suitable trade partner for Nurkic before the deadline, but it is clear that they are actively looking to make a move. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

Suns Reportedly Looking to Trade Jusuf Nurkic
The Phoenix Suns are reportedly looking for trade offers for center Jusuf Nurkic. The 7’0 pivot joined the Suns a season and a half ago after a nine-year career with the Portland Trail Blazers and Denver Nuggets.
Duane Rankin of the Arizona Republic quotes league sources on Nurkic’s availability:
The Phoenix Suns have been actively looking to trade starting center Jusuf Nurkic, league sources informed The Arizona Republic.
The Suns (14-14) are seeking a big in return, the sources said. The team has been playing Mason Plumlee, rookie Oso Ighodaro and Nurkic at the five position. Washington Wizards big Jonas Valančiūnas and Chicago Bulls big Nikola Vucevic are two players whose names have been reportedly thrown into league trade talks.
Nurkic is averaging 9.0 points and 9.7 rebounds in 24.8 minutes per game for the Suns this year. He averaged 14.4 points and 9.8 rebounds over 6.5 seasons with the Trail Blazers between 2017 and 2023.
According to recent reports, the Phoenix Suns are actively looking to trade center Jusuf Nurkic. The 26-year-old big man has been with the Suns since 2019 but has struggled to find a consistent role in the team’s rotation.Nurkic is known for his defensive prowess and rebounding ability, but his offensive game has been inconsistent at times. With the emergence of younger players in the Suns’ frontcourt, including Deandre Ayton and Dario Saric, Nurkic’s playing time has been limited.
The Suns are reportedly looking to acquire assets that can help them in their quest for a championship, and trading Nurkic could be a way to improve their roster. It remains to be seen which teams are interested in acquiring Nurkic and what the Suns are looking to get in return for the talented big man.
