  • Surprise defensive loanee from France lined up by Juve

Juventus head coach Motta is under increasing pressure in Turin following two defeats on the bounce, so bringing in the 26-year-old Austrian center-back should help his cause to win over fans and pundits.

His problems include centre-back Gleison Bremer and left-back Juan Cabal with long-term injuries, on top of the short-term loss of the services of defender Pierre Kalulu this week.

The 24-year-old pulled his hamstring during the first half of the Champions League debacle against Benfica, and is expected to be sidelined for a couple of weeks. It meant that Federico Gatti was Motta’s sole natural defender in the back four against Benfica once Kalulu was withdrawn.

This revelation about Danso is somewhat of a surprise, given that Juve sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli has been coy about adding personnel during the current transfer window.

He told Sky Italia this week: “As of now, our transfer market is effectively closed. But we will keep an eye out for any opportunities that suit our requirements.”

There had been interest in Danso earlier this month, but Juventus were determined to maintain their stance that they didn’t wish to agree to a loan with an option to buy.

Danso is apparently arriving from French outfit RC Lens for an initial loan fee of €2.5 million (US$2.6m) for a short-term loan spell. If a deal goes through then he will follow recently recruited Renato Veiga, who is on loan from Chelsea.

Veiga, who was ineligible to play against Portuguese giants Benfica on Wednesday, is expected to partner Gatti when Empoli visit the Allianz Stadium on Sunday. However, Danso could be part of Motta’s squad if his medical and contract get hurried through.

Motta’s side looked despondent throughout their clash with Benfica, and to add insult to injury were jeered off by home fans at half-time and full-time. Empoli, who are on a seven-game winless run, are just the sort of opponents that Motta’s men need to tackle in order to stop the rot following back-to-back defeats.

Juventus fans, get ready to be surprised! The Italian giants are reportedly close to securing a loan deal for a highly-rated defender from France.

The player in question is none other than Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig. The 23-year-old center-back has been a standout performer in the Bundesliga and has caught the eye of several top clubs across Europe.

Juventus are in need of defensive reinforcements and Upamecano could be the perfect solution. Known for his strength, speed, and excellent reading of the game, the Frenchman would add some much-needed quality to the Bianconeri’s backline.

While the deal is not yet finalized, sources close to the club suggest that an agreement is imminent and fans can expect an official announcement in the coming days.

Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting transfer development and get ready to welcome Upamecano to Turin! #ForzaJuve

    TRENDING RUMORS

    – Chelsea are looking to land Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic if they can include defender Renato Veiga in the deal, says The Times. Vlahovic, 24, has been linked with a move for months, with Arsenal also reported to be interested. The Serbia international has a contract until 2026 but hasn’t settled in Turin and could move on for around €60m, with Portugal defender Veiga, 21, possibly set to be used as a makeweight by Chelsea to reduce the overall fee.

    – Barcelona have added Bayern Munich attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala to their summer shortlist, reports Sport. It is reported that manager Hansi Flick believes the 21-year-old Germany international would be a strong addition to his side, as the Blaugrana draw up plans to make a marquee signing in the summer. Musiala’s deal at the Allianz Arena is set to expire in 2026, but recent reports have indicated that the Bundesliga club are in talks over a contract extension.

Al Hilal are seriously interested in Mohamed Salah and are monitoring the winger’s situation at Liverpool, reports Florian Plettenberg, who adds that the Saudi Arabian club is ready to act if Salah leaves Anfield as a free agent in the summer. The 32-year-old isn’t a topic of interest from Paris Saint-Germain.

Omar Marmoush will complete a medical today ahead of his move from Eintracht Frankfurt to Manchester City, as reported by Florian Plettenberg, who adds that the forward’s contract will run until 2030 with the announcement planned to come on Thursday. The deal will be worth a guaranteed €75m with €5m in add-ons, and the 25-year-old will earn a net value of around €10m yearly.

    – Bayern Munich and left-back Alphonso Davies are set to proceed with a new deal soon, as reported by Fabrizio Romano. This comes after a long speculation about the 24-year-old’s future, as his deal has been scheduled to end in the summer and there has been plenty of interest in the Canada international from Real Madrid.

    CONFIRMED TRANSFERS

    – Manchester City have completed the €35m signing of 19-year-old defender Vitor Reis from Palmeiras. Read

    – Australia international defender Alanna Kennedy has signed for NWSL side Angel City from Manchester City. Read

    – Aston Villa have announced the €7m signing of right-back Andrés García from Levante.

    – Bayern Munich have signed Hoffenheim’s Tom Bischof on a four-year contract and he will join on a free transfer in the summer.

    – Argentina right-back Gonzalo Montiel has returned to his first club River Plate from Sevilla and has signed a contract until 2028.

    – Brazilian club Fortaleza have signed former PSG, Chelsea and Arsenal defender David Luiz. The 37-year-old joins Fortaleza as a free agent after his contract with Flamengo expired last month.

    – Chicago Fire have signed winger Jonathan Bamba from Celta Vigo as a Designated Player.

    – San Diego FC have signed USMNT midfielder Luca de la Torre on a 12-month loan from Celta Vigo.

    EXPERT TAKE

ESPN Senior Writer Gab Marcotti looks at what the future holds for Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic.

Vlahovic has entered the final 18 months of his contract with Juventus and is unlikely to extend his deal. Partly because he is by far the club’s highest-paid player, partly because Juventus — who registered losses of €322.9m (£272.4m) over the past two season – have been actively working to balance the books. It’s a very different situation to when they signed him for €70m (rising to €80m with bonuses) in June 2022 and he was seen as the last piece of the puzzle. Complicating matters for the Bianconeri –– and giving them urgency to move him on — is his contract structure, which saw his salary balloon from €7m net (around €250,000 in weekly gross terms) to €12m (approximately €400,000 in weekly gross terms) this season. Shifting him would bring substantial savings, in addition to a transfer fee.

Vlahovic, 24, is a rare player: a tall, strong, athletic and technically gifted target man who is just entering the prime of his career. In four seasons at Juventus he has scored 53 goals in 124 games, despite playing under four different managers during a difficult period for the club.

You imagine he would need to take a pay cut to join Chelsea, Arsenal (or any other club) but that’s doable, in exchange for bonuses and a long-term deal. Juventus would presumably be looking for a fee in the €60m range, considering his value on their books is around €20m. They would also need to find a replacement as the long-term injury to their other striker, Arek Milik, means there are no other recognised centre-forwards on their books.

Bacca recalls Supercoppa triumph, previews Juve game and gives thoughts on Milan

Carlos Bacca was a part of the last AC Milan team that won the Supercoppa Italiana, funnily enough against Juventus over eight years ago.

The 2016 Supercoppa was played on 23 December 2016 at Jassim bin Hamad Stadium in Qatar. Juventus were the defending Serie A champions, and because they won the Coppa Italia too, Milan qualified as cup runners-up.

Juve were the favourites going into the game but the Rossoneri won 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra-time. It was Vincenzo Montella’s first and ultimately only trophy, and the last one until the 2021-22 Scudetto for the club.

Bacca did not score, but he remembers that victory on penalties well, brought about by Donnarumma’s brilliant save on Dybala and the decisive penalty scored by Pasalic. He spoke to La Gazzetta dello Sport about that night and his old club in general.

Even though eight years have passed, you remember that night in Doha well…

“How could I? That is probably the best memory of my experience with AC Milan. We played a great match against a strong opponent and we managed to beat them showing great heart.”

In that team was Locatelli, who will be playing against Milan tonight…

“Manuel was young, but he was destined to become the great player he is now. He started training with us after the youth team because Brocchi had seen qualities in him.

“He made the most of his chances and now he is showing his value with Juve and the national team. He is one of the midfielders who make the difference in Italian football.”

Do you still hear from your team-mates from that side?

“I speak with Calabria with Donnarumma, Locatelli and Cutrone. They were great teammates and fantastic people. I wish Milan the best.”

What kind of match do you expect tonight?

“It’s tough because Motta’s team is tough and have not yet lost in the league. It will take a good performance, but I’m convinced that Milan can reach the final.”

Will you be in front of the TV too?

“If the training schedule with Atletico Junior de Barranquilla allows me… I always follow Milan and the Rossoneri have one more fan in Colombia.”

Are you disappointed with how this year has gone so far?

“If Milan don’t get results, it’s inevitable that the management will change coach. It’s part of the game… Conceiçao brings a new idea of football that we hope will be successful and will relaunch Milan in the race to qualify for the Champions League.

“The biggest club in Italy must always have the objective of fighting for the Scudetto and participating in the Champions League.”

Any regrets about how your AC Milan adventure ended?

“No. Inside me I only have the pride of having worn the shirt of one of the most important clubs in the world. I’m sure I gave my all. And that Supercoppa is a really nice memory.”

Bacca reflects on Supercoppa triumph and looks ahead to Juve clash

As AC Milan gears up for a crucial Serie A showdown against Juventus, star striker Carlos Bacca took a moment to reflect on his team’s recent Supercoppa Italiana triumph. The Rossoneri defeated Juventus in a dramatic penalty shootout to clinch the trophy, and Bacca played a key role in the victory, scoring a crucial goal in regulation time.

In a post-match interview, Bacca expressed his pride in the team’s performance and highlighted the importance of winning silverware. “It was a special moment for all of us to lift the Supercoppa trophy,” Bacca said. “It’s a testament to our hard work and dedication, and it gives us confidence going into the rest of the season.”

Looking ahead to the upcoming clash against Juventus in Serie A, Bacca emphasized the need for focus and determination. “Juventus are a tough team, but we have shown that we can compete with the best,” Bacca said. “We need to stay disciplined and execute our game plan to come out on top.”

When asked about Milan’s overall performance this season, Bacca remained optimistic despite some inconsistent results. “We have had our ups and downs, but I believe we have the quality and the mentality to achieve our goals,” Bacca said. “We just need to stay united and keep working hard to improve.”

As Bacca and his teammates prepare to face Juventus, fans will be hoping for another memorable performance from the Colombian striker. With his goal-scoring prowess and leadership on the field, Bacca will be instrumental in Milan’s quest for success in Serie A.
