Emergency not shown in Punjab; ‘Harassment of artist’: Kangana Ranaut | Bollywood News
Cinemas across Punjab cancelled the screening of Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency Friday following Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee’s protests with several Sikh organisations and Congress leaders calling for a ban, even as Ranaut called it “complete harassment of art and the artiste”.
The film, co-produced by Ranaut, who is also BJP’s Mandi MP, was released Friday.
The SGPC protested outside cinemas, multiplexes and malls across the state. All theatres decided against screening. SGPC chief secretary Kulwant Singh Manan said, “Following SGPC’s objections and demonstrations, theatres have decided not to screen the film. We welcome the decision.”
PVR Cinemas cancelled its scheduled shows in Amritsar in the wake of protests. Gagandeep Singh, ACP (Crime), Amritsar, said, “The movie is not being screened. We spoke to the manager and he came out and announced the movie is not being screened.”
Referring to SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami’s letter to CM Bhagwant Mann demanding a ban on the movie, SGPC secretary Partap Singh accused the AAP government of deliberately ignoring Sikh issues.
A senior government official said the state does not have a policy on banning a movie. “The CM hasn’t issued any orders. There is no ban as of now… cinema owners have themselves not screened the movie,” the official said.
Seeking a ban on the movie, Congress leader Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa said on X, “Given the already fragile law and order situation in the state, the AAP government should consider imposing a complete ban on the film.”
Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa said, “It distorts historical facts and promotes a biased narrative…”
Meanwhile, Ranaut said, “This is complete harassment of art and the artist… from Punjab many cities are reporting these people are not allowing Emergency to be screened. I have utmost respect for all religions and after studying and growing up in Chandigarh, I have closely observed and followed Sikh religion. This is a complete lie and propaganda to tarnish my image and harm my film.”

Emergency box office collection day 2: Kangana Ranaut film outperforms Thalaivii, Dhaakad and Tejas, but unlikely to become a hit | Bollywood News
Emergency box office collection day 2: After opening to a nominal Rs 2.4 crore India nett, the historical biographical drama Emergency, directed, co-produced and headlined by Kangana Ranaut, saw a slight improvement on Saturday with better earnings. However, the figures remain far from promising and fall short of what’s needed for the film to achieve an eventual box office success.
On Saturday, Emergency, which marks Kangana’s solo directorial debut, recorded an India nett collection of Rs 3.42 crore, according to early estimates by industry tracker Sacnilk. This marks a 36.8 per cent increase compared to its release-day figures, bringing its total domestic earnings to Rs 5.92 crore.
During the day, Emergency recorded an overall occupancy rate of 15.41 per cent in the Hindi market. Starting with a lacklustre 5.95 per cent occupancy in morning shows, the rate improved steadily throughout the day, reaching 13.99 per cent in the afternoon, 20.01 per cent in the evening and peaking at 21.69 per cent during night shows.

For Kangana Ranaut, Emergency is a crucial project, not only because it is her first solo directorial effort but also because she has not had a box office hit in five years. While Emergency’s first Saturday domestic nett figure lags behind her previous films such as Judgementall Hai Kya (Rs 7.50 crore), Panga (Rs 5.61 crore) and Chandramukhi 2 (Rs 5.1 crore), it is notably better than her recent box office bombs like Thalaivii (Rs 1.60 crore), Dhaakad (Rs 1.05 crore) and Tejas (Rs 1.3 crore). Nonetheless, considering that the movie has been mounted on a reported budget of about Rs 60 crore, the chances of Emergency breaking even appear slim, given its lacklustre opening week performance and the negative reviews it has received since its release.
In her review of the movie, SCREEN’s Shubhra Gupta wrote, “In a preposterous sequence, Manekshaw, Indira and the members of the Parliament join in a song. Not even Kangana Ranaut’s undoubted competence as an actor can save it.”

Before the release of the movie, there were mixed reports about the box office performance of the movie. Many analysts said the movie would not be able to leave a mark on the box office, while others disagreed. To the surprise of the former group, ‘Emergency’ opened with a decent number of Rs.2.5 crore on Friday, and thereafter, it also saw a rise in the business, according to the Sacnilk report. On day 2 the movie made Rs3.6 crore business, which was a 44 per cent increase from the previous day’s collection. On its first Sunday, i.e. day 4, the movie made Rs.4.35 crore and took the overall collection to Rs.10.45 crore.

New Delhi:Kangana Ranaut’s latest film Emergency opened in the theaters on Friday (January 17). The film minted Rs 4.35 crore on its first Sunday (January 19), reported Sacnilk.
With this, the total collection of the political drama now stands at Rs 10.45 crore. The film witnessed an overall occupancy rate of 18.96% in the Hindi market, the report added.
Directed and co-produced by Kangana Ranaut, the film revolves around the 21-month Emergency period imposed by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
While Kangana Ranaut plays Indira Gandhi in the film, Anupam Kher essays Jayaprakash Narayan. Milind Soman is seen as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Shreyas Talpade as Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Vishak Nair as Sanjay Gandhi, and Mahima Chaudhry as Pupul Jayakar.
Previously, in an interaction with Shubhankar Mishra, Kangana Ranaut revealed her financial struggles while making Emergency.
She said, “Of course I had financial issues while making the film. A lot of people backed out. Nobody was buying it. No OTT platform was ready to purchase it. I had to mortgage my house to make the film. I did go through these issues but I didn’t have someone to go to and cry to.”
Kangana Ranaut added, “I never had a PR team to promote myself. But people against me hired PRs to harm my image. They randomly put cases against me calling me psycho, chudail, stalker. They spoke so much bad about me. Nobody speaks about a woman like that.”
Emergency marks Kangana Ranaut’s biggest box-office opening in five years. Her 2023 aerial action film Tejas, by Sarvesh Mewara, garnered a modest Rs 1.25 crore on day 1. Kangana’s 2022 action entertainer Dhaakad amassed Rs 1.20 crore. Meanwhile, her 2021 political biopic Thalaivii about the late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had an opening collection of Rs 1.46 crore in Hindi, Telugu and Tamil.

Actor Kangana Ranaut’s “Emergency” has collected Rs 7.39 crore at the domestic box office in two days, the makers said on Sunday.
The political drama, which sees Ranaut playing the role of former prime minister Indira Gandhi, focuses on the 21 months of Emergency from 1975 to 1977.
The film, which courted controversy over its censor certificate and allegations that it misrepresents the Sikh community, was released across the country on Friday after several delays.
According to Ranaut’s Manikarnika Films, the film earned net Rs 3.11 crore on day one, followed by Rs 4.28 crore on Saturday. The film’s two-day net collection stood at Rs 7.39 crore.
“The buzz is UNSTOPPABLE as #Emergency grips audiences nationwide! The momentum is building—experience the film everyone’s talking about,” the banner posted on Sunday.
“Emergency” was not screened at cinemas in Punjab on Friday, following state-wide protests by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee and Sikh organisations with many politicians calling for a ban.
The SGPC, an apex gurdwara body, and several Sikh organisations held demonstrations against the movie outside cinemas, multiplexes and malls across the state.
Ranaut decried the demand for a ban on “Emergency” and said the film’s restricted screenings in parts of Punjab is a “complete harassment of art and the artist”.
“Emergency” also features Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, Milind Soman and late actor Satish Kaushik.
The film is produced by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films.
