Keegan Murray joined The Allen Stiles Show after Tuesday’s practice to break down how the Sacramento Kings are “righting the ship” under interim head coach Doug Christie.
Since he took over for Mike Brown, the Kings are 9-2, climbing to 8th in the Western Conference.
“(Christie’s) obviously been a Sacramento King before, playing at Arco, and he knows how loud it can get, how fun it can be to play at home, and how troubling it can be for opposing teams to play there,” Keegan Murray said.
Sacramento’s 123-100 home win over the Washington Wizards on Sunday, they improved to 12-12 after their unideal start hosting teams in Golden 1 Center.
“He knows that before he started coaching, we weren’t great at home, and he’s just righted the ship with our intensity, our focus at home to win games, get the crowd into it.”
Murray currently averages 11.9 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists on 42.1 percent from the field and 31.7 percent from three on 5.7 attempts per game. While it’s a career-low in points and conversion rate, he’s been shining since returning from a few days off to let an ankle injury (which he had been playing through) fully heal.
“I feel like I’m playing at a high level,” Murray told Stiles. “Obviously, statistically, the three-point shot isn’t falling, but everything else I’m playing at a high level. When (the shot) comes it comes, and [I’m] just continuing to work at it.”
The Kings are hoping to continue their climb up the Western Conference standings, with Wednesday’s home matchup against the Golden State Warriors next on their schedule. Extremely familiar with the other NorCal team, Murray looks forward to the matchup.
“There’s always juice when we play them just because we’re so close in miles apart and obviously the playoff series, the play-in. We’ve seen them each year in the postseason, so I feel like there’s really good competition and things like that. I’m sure people call it a rivalry, but we know it’s a tough game every single we play them. It’s always a good game, so we’re excited to get after it tomorrow.”
It’ll be Sacramento’s chance to get back above .500 in Golden 1 Center.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (January 3, 2025) – New England Revolution II signed midfielder Joe Buck and defender Keegan Hughes to MLS NEXT Pro professional contracts ahead of the 2025 season.
Buck, 22, signs with his hometown club on a one-year professional contract for the 2025 MLS NEXT Pro season, with an additional one-year club option for 2026. An Arlington, Mass. native, Buck returns to New England after graduating from the club’s Academy in 2021, becoming the 14th Revolution Academy product to enter the professional ranks via Revolution II.
Buck spent three seasons at Georgetown University, where he tallied four goals and five assists in 74 matches played for the Hoyas, including 42 starts. In his freshman season at Georgetown, the midfielder led his team to the 2021 BIG EAST Championship, scoring the game-winning goal in the 88th minute against Villanova in the semifinals. Later in the postseason, Buck converted the clinching penalty kick against West Virginia to send the Hoyas to the 2021 NCAA Men’s Soccer College Cup semifinals, earning him a spot on the Big East All-Tournament Team.
Prior to his collegiate career, Buck made his professional debut with Revolution II in 2021, posting two appearances, including one start. As the midfielder returns to New England, Buck will join his younger brother, Noel Buck, 19, who is entering his fourth season on the Revs’ MLS roster as a Homegrown Player.
Hughes, 24, joins Revolution II for his second season in MLS NEXT Pro. Last year, he went on loan from the Columbus Crew to USL Championship side Loudoun United FC, where the center back made 29 league appearances and 25 starts. In the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, Hughes helped lead his team to the Round of 16, starting all three matches with two 90-minute shifts.
Hughes began his professional career after signing a Homegrown contract with Columbus Crew on Jan. 11, 2023. The 2018 Crew Academy Player of the Year made his MLS debut on March 25, 2023, coming off the bench as a second-half substitute in a match against Atlanta United FC. Hughes also suited up for two appearances with the Crew in the 2023 U.S. Open Cup. For the remainder of the 2023 campaign, Hughes played in MLS NEXT Pro with Crew 2, registering one goal across nine appearances, all starts. In August 2023, the Heath, Ohio native was loaned to FC Tulsa of the USL Championship side for the remainder of the season, where he netted one goal in nine appearances under current Revolution Assistant Coach Blair Gavin.
Hughes enjoyed a distinguished four-year collegiate career at Stanford University from 2019-22, where the defender tallied eight goals and seven assists across 73 starts. A senior captain in 2022, Hughes and the Cardinal defense ranked first in the Pac-12 conference in shutouts, securing nine clean sheets during the regular season to help guide Stanford to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA College Cup tournament. His impressive collegiate career earned him numerous accolades, including recognition as a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist, First Team All-American, Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, All-Pac-12 First Team, First Team Scholar All-American, and the National Scholar Player of the Year.

1 day agoSacramento Kings forward Keegan Murray (ankle) is doubtful to play on Wednesday versus Philadelphia. He’s nursing soreness in his left ankle. Murray has missed only one game this season so far. Doug McDermott replaced him in the starting five versus Denver on Dec. 16. The veteran has had three starts overall in 2024-25, averaging 8.7 points in 20.3 minutes in the first unit. McDermott is a three-point specialist and usually doesn’t provide much else for fantasy managers. The Sacramento Kings have become a bit of a mess this season, winning just 13 of their first 32 games, firing head coach Mike Brown, and seeing third-year forward Keegan Murray become a shell of himself.
For now, let’s focus exclusively on Murray, who has had an outright weird season.
The former lottery pick took a step up last year, averaging over 15 points, doing more with the ball in his hands, and looking primed for a third-year breakout.
Then the Kings signed DeMar DeRozan, which killed their spacing, and now Murray is putting up 11.9 points per night on the worst efficiency of his career.
But it’s not that straightforward.
While Murray’s offense looks genuinely awful this season, his defense has never been better, and he’s made a strong effort in establishing himself on the glass, grabbing 7.4 per game and turning that former weakness of his, into a strength.
So it isn’t as linear as Murray having just regressed across the board, which is usually the case when someone struggles. There are literally elements that have never been better, just as there are elements that have never been worse.
The oddity of his season makes him a bit unpredictable. The Kings, who need their 6’8 switchable forward to produce on both ends of the court, flat-out cannot expect him to do that at this stage, meaning that necessitates an over reliance on De’Aaron Fox, Domantas Sabonis, and the aforementioned DeRozan.
So, what can be done to help Murray along, which would, in turn, help the Kings get back to something more consistent?
For one, the coaching staff will need to find ways for Murray to get quicker downhill, and all the way to the basket. The third-year man has always had a knack for finishing near the rim, hitting a ridiculously effective 81.5% of his shots within three feet this season, and struggling mostly everywhere else.
For Murray to establish himself on the interior, and seeing more and more shots get converted, it should boost his confidence and rhythm to a point where he can begin to re-balance himself offensively, and slowly transition towards being more comfortable with the three-point shot, of which he’s currently hitting just 29.1% on the season.
The fact that Murray’s flanked by Fox and Sabonis, both strong playmakers, is an asset, and would function as a major component of such a plan, as that would allow the 6’8 wing to move a lot more off the ball, finding seams in the defense of which to utilize.
It won’t be painless, and Murray will undoubtedly go through stretches where he feels uncomfortable playing primarily as a driver, but if it means a higher likelihood of returning to form, so be it.
Sacramento Kings fans, it’s time to rally behind our rookie forward Keegan Murray and help him get back to the form that made him a standout player at Iowa.
Murray, the 14th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, showed flashes of brilliance early in the season but has struggled to find consistency in recent games. As a fanbase, we need to show our support for him and help boost his confidence on the court.
