  • SZA and Keke Palmer’s Black female buddy comedy is refreshing.

In the new movie One of Them Days, it’s the first of the month, when the bills are due and tensions are higher than usual. BFF roommates Dreux (played by everyone’s favorite multihyphenate Keke Palmer) and Alyssa (R&B singer SZA, in her feature-film debut) find themselves strapped for cash, with nary a penny to pay their monthly rent—which is due by 6 p.m., or they’ll face eviction. Thus begins the epic day-in-the-life journey of two broke Black girls who comb through their neighborhood of South Central Los Angeles looking for ways to get cash fast.

One of Them Days is the first mainstream Black-women-led buddy comedy since 2017’s smash hit Girls Trip, and, reportedly, the first to center just a duo since 1997’s B.A.P.S. Produced by Insecure’s Issa Rae, written by Rap Sh!t showrunner and frequent Rae collaborator Syreeta Singleton, and directed by Lawrence Lamont, the movie delivers plenty of laughs, socioeconomic messages, and Black female sisterhood (without the accompaniment of the severe trauma plot). The Black female buddy comedy is back and fresher than ever, a reminder of just how much this genre has to offer.

Like many great comedies, such as Superbad or Friday, One of Them Days takes place over the course of one day. (The movie’s only fault is neglecting to include the best song ever made about this specific day.) When Alyssa’s crafty noncommittal boyfriend Keshawn (Joshua Neal) steals the girls’ rent money to finance the start of his T-shirt line (shirts that say “Cucci,” a play on the luxury brand Gucci), Dreux and Alyssa venture into the neighborhood of Baldwin Village, colloquially known as “the Jungle,” for opportunities to earn some quick money. However, not only are they pressed for time by their landlord, who is noted for skirting legal rental practices, but Dreux also has to make it to a hopefully life-changing interview for a big promotion—and, to top it all off, the girls are being hunted by a neighborhood bully.

Slapsticky hijinks, dick jokes, and comedic linchpins found in any movie about the hood—public brawls, neighborhood tough guys, someone coming in and stealing something the protagonists worked hard to get—ensue. However, while the movie’s comedy tends toward the profane, the issues that set up the punch lines in One of Them Days are very real. The duo gets rejected from a loan bank because of their abysmal credit; Dreux, in a bid for a quick buck, gives too much blood, which hilariously ends up all over the donation center; Alyssa steals a pair of Air Jordans hanging on a phone line, which lands them in hot water with the neighborhood’s crime boss. When comedy legend Katt Williams shows up as Lucky, a loitering antiestablishment street preacher who warns the girls not to take a loan from the loan bank for fear of them getting trapped in a predatory cycle of debt, he becomes one of the best running gags in the movie, while also making a salient point about the very real predatory businesses that target residents of impoverished areas. The film takes a similar approach to the Village’s first white resident, Bethany (Maude Apatow), moving into a renovated apartment much nicer than the protagonists’ dilapidated unit—a funny, yet trenchant, portrayal of gentrification and landlords’ exploitative practices pushing out long-standing tenants in favor of wealthier, often white, fresh blood.

But One of Them Days is more about how people survive than just the widespread injustices they live with. The laughs might be based on how societal structures keep Black people down, but the movie itself is about how Black women build community and lift each other up. Elle’s Keyaira Kelly aptly calls One of Them Days a “love letter to regular, degular Black girls”—and this is accomplished on many fronts, from the way the costuming, hair, and makeup choices simultaneously enhance the film’s comedy and the effortless beauty of its stars, to the way the girls’ faith in each other overrides and outlives any frustrations they have with each other. Most buddy comedies show a temporary falling-out between the lead characters as the central conflict comes to a head. One of Them Days is no different in that regard, but the thing this movie understands about being a Black woman is that there is an unshakable faith in what you know your fellow Black women to be capable of. Black women are the first ones to recognize each other’s worth; fittingly, although Dreux and Alyssa’s frustrations with each other mount as the day goes on, they never discount one another.

It makes sense that this long-overdue addition to the scant canon of Black female buddy comedies comes to us by way of Issa Rae, who is widely credited with leading the charge in bringing stories about Black womanhood to the screen, big and small. Rae’s production company and her extensive network might also be to thank for some great cameos from Black comedy greats like Abbott Elementary’s Janelle James, Get Out’s Lil Rel Howery, comedian and TV writer Dewayne Perkins, A Black Lady Sketch Show’s Gabrielle Dennis, and more. There’s nothing wrong with a well-crafted Black drama—last year’s standout films Nickel Boys and Hard Truths are evidence enough of this. But One of Them Days is a welcome reminder that there’s room for many kinds of movies in Black cinema—and some of them can even show four-time Grammy Award–winning musician SZA getting electrocuted by climbing up a telephone pole.

SZA and Keke Palmer’s Black female buddy comedy is refreshing

In a world where Black women are often portrayed in stereotypical, one-dimensional roles, it’s refreshing to see a film that showcases the complexity, humor, and friendship between two Black women. SZA and Keke Palmer’s upcoming buddy comedy promises to do just that.

The film, which has yet to be titled, will follow the hilarious misadventures of two best friends as they navigate life, love, and everything in between. With SZA’s soulful charm and Palmer’s comedic timing, this dynamic duo is sure to bring a fresh perspective to the buddy comedy genre.

What sets this film apart is its focus on the friendship between two Black women. Too often, Black women are pitted against each other or reduced to side characters in films. SZA and Palmer’s film will show that Black women can be funny, relatable, and supportive of each other in a way that is rarely seen on screen.

Overall, SZA and Keke Palmer’s Black female buddy comedy is a much-needed breath of fresh air in Hollywood. It’s time for Black women to be at the forefront of their own stories, and this film is a step in the right direction. Keep an eye out for this exciting project, as it’s sure to be a hit!

  • Keke Palmer Wows in Ferragamo Cold Shoulder Dress on ‘Jennifer Hudson’

Keke Palmer opted for sensual styling for her appearance on “The Jennifer Hudson Show” in Burbank, Calif., on Friday. The actress, who is currently promoting her new film “One of Them Days,” chatted with the eponymous talk show host about 2025 trends and more.

For her daytime talk show appearance, Palmer opted for a jersey dress with sultry shoulder cutouts courtesy of Ferragamo. The actress wore the brand’s cold shoulder midi dress, which featured a plunging neckline with gold-tone bead detailing.

The dress, which Palmer wore in a shade of espresso, featured a halterneck styling and was crafted in a slinky jersey fabric for an extra touch of sultry edge. Palmer accentuated the gold tone elements of her Ferragamo dress by adding a chain belt at her hips.

She also wore strappy gold sandal heels by Rene Caovilla and accessorized with gold rings, a gold bracelet and gold earrings. As for her glam, Palmer’s hair was styled with voluminous red curls and her makeup featured a smokey eye, bold brows and a glossy lip.

During her time on “The Jennifer Hudson Show,” Palmer discussed some of 2025’s trends, a few of which were not fashion related, and rated them as “hot” or “not.” Among the trends were the popular starface pimple patches. “I’m here for that,” Palmer said of the trend. “As a girl who’s had her days with that acne, we’ve got to figure out a way to dress up — if it’s gonna be on my face, I’ve got to make it a friend.”

Palmer, a multihyphenate talent known for her acting, music career, podcasting and entrepreneurial efforts, expanded her scope in 2024 as the new chief brand officer for Revlon’s Creme of Nature hair care.

“I grew up with Creme of Nature — it’s one of those brands that has always been there not just among my family, but my community,” Palmer said in October 2024, following her appointment to the role.

“To have the opportunity to do it at this scale with Creme of Nature — it speaks to what the brand is doing in a way that not many others can claim, and I’m excited to bridge the gap between a legacy brand and how it’s coming back to the forefront for a new generation.”

Keke Palmer turned heads and stole the show as a guest on ‘Jennifer Hudson’ in a stunning Ferragamo cold shoulder dress. The actress and singer looked absolutely radiant in the sleek and sophisticated ensemble, showcasing her impeccable sense of style and fashion.

The form-fitting dress featured a unique cold shoulder design, adding a modern and edgy twist to the classic silhouette. Keke paired the dress with strappy heels and minimal accessories, allowing the dress to truly shine and take center stage.

With her flawless hair and makeup, Keke exuded confidence and grace as she talked about her latest projects and upcoming ventures on the show. Fans and fashion enthusiasts alike couldn’t stop raving about her impeccable style and beauty.

Keke Palmer continues to prove that she is a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment industry, and her fashion choices only further solidify her status as a style icon. We can’t wait to see what she wears next!

  • Keke Palmer Says World Will Be ‘Gagged’ by SZA’s Acting Debut (Exclusive)

Don’t snooze on SZA‘s big-screen debut in One of Them Days. Her costar in the comedy, Keke Palmer hails the Grammy-winning singer as a natural.

“The world is about to be just gagged,” Palmer, 31, tells PEOPLE in an interview alongside SZA, 35, and producer Issa Rae conducted in December. “Honestly, it’s so, so good. I really am just so proud of you and the movie. It’s all, to me, a match made in heaven.”

SZA admits she was nervous about adding actress to her list of talents — or, as she puts it, “scared as hell,” “terrified” and “anxious.” Still, it’s a “bucket-list” moment for her, she explains.

“I’m trying something brand new. All I can do is try my best, you know, and thank God for the opportunity and just kinda lean into and accept it as a growing experience,” says SZA. “I have tons of fears of being perceived on camera, talking, my voice [and] being next to Keke, who’s a superstar of so many multitudes.”

SZA and Keke Palmer in “One of Them Days”.

    Anne Marie Fox/Sony

Palmer, who’s been in front of the camera since her child stardom days, says she and SZA first interacted over Instagram DMs (they had a “simple” back-and-forth about “girl stuff,” she says) before meeting in person at Saturday Night Live. Palmer hosted alongside SZA as the musical guest on a December 2022 episode, spawning that viral “Bad Boys” cuffing season song.

SZA says she felt Palmer was “larger-than-life, unreal and impossible” after accomplishing so many things over the course of her career. However, “then when I met her at SNL, she was so real and possible and present. So funny and enigmatic. Within three seconds of talking to her I was like, ‘Oh, s—!’ I loved it. I wanted more.”

“It’s like looking in a mirror,” adds Palmer.

Their chemistry was “good” from the get-go, says Palmer, but it only grew “stronger” the more time they spent filming together, resulting in a true friendship.

In One of Them Days, a buddy comedy set in Los Angeles, they play besties Dreux (Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA) as they scramble to get rent money by the end of the day to avoid eviction.

SZA says of her time with Palmer on set, “Every day, 12 hours of real-life conversation. It was like a crash course, like a speed date but very intense.”

“We actually liked each other. We was gonna get married at the end. I was gonna say ‘I do,’ ” adds SZA with a smile. Palmer agrees, “It was giving that.”

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE’s free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Insecure alum Rae, 40, who produced the film via her Hoorae Media company, says Palmer and SZA shine together, on camera and off.

“[SZA] freaking killed it, and watching Keke overextend and be like, ‘Yo, let’s go to each other’s houses. Let’s rehearse. Let’s do this.’ Watching her embrace SZA throughout the process, I was like, ‘This is something that Dreux would do for Alyssa,’ ” says Rae. “Watching [SZA] show up and be present and wanting to do the best job possible — and actually doing it — it just made sense and it all fit together.”

One of Them Days is in theaters Jan. 17.

Keke Palmer Says World Will Be ‘Gagged’ by SZA’s Acting Debut (Exclusive)

Get ready, because SZA is about to take the world by storm in her upcoming acting debut, according to actress and singer Keke Palmer. In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, Palmer gushed about SZA’s talents and predicted that audiences will be “gagged” by her performance.

“SZA is a force to be reckoned with in the music industry, and now she’s bringing that same energy to the screen,” Palmer said. “I had the privilege of watching her on set, and let me tell you, she is captivating. The world is not ready for what she’s about to bring to the table.”

While details about SZA’s acting debut are still under wraps, Palmer hinted that it will be a game-changer. “SZA has a natural charisma and presence that translates effortlessly to the screen,” Palmer added. “I have no doubt that she will leave audiences speechless with her performance.”

Fans can expect to see SZA’s acting debut in the near future, and according to Palmer, it will be worth the wait. “I am so excited for everyone to see what SZA is capable of,” Palmer said. “She is a true talent, and I have no doubt that the world will be ‘gagged’ by her acting debut.”

  • ‘One of Them Days’ Review: Keke Palmer and SZA on a Mad Dash for Cash

The joyous comedy “One of Them Days” is one of those flicks that traces a madcap day in the lives of its protagonists, the broke but bubbly best friends Dreux (Keke Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA). It’s the first of the month, meaning rent is due for the ramshackle apartment they share in Los Angeles. If only Alyssa hadn’t entrusted the money to her freeloading boyfriend, Keshawn (Joshua David Neal).

Borrowing from slacker and stoner comedies, “One of Them Days” becomes a ticking-clock quest for cash, complete with periodic freeze frames announcing how many hours remain before the women’s eviction. But the movie’s big achievement lies in how rarely it lapses into gross-out or injury-inflicting gags. (Shockingly for a comedy of this type, drugs hardly appear.) An early pratfall involving a faulty dishwasher proves a red herring; the director Lawrence Lamont and the screenwriter Syreeta Singleton find their best humor on the character level, in clever dialogue and sharp line deliveries from the entire ensemble.

Genuine emotion attends the humor. As sidekicks, Dreux and Alyssa share a value system, vocabulary and hearty appreciation for fun. More deeply, their bond is bolstered by an unwavering belief in one another’s talents and worth. Lamont and Singleton effortlessly mix the silly with the sincere, and although “One of Them Days” favors razzing over heart-to-hearts, our belief in this pairing never wavers. For that, hats off to SZA and especially Palmer, who lights up the screen with starry zeal.

    One of Them Days
Rated R for language and sex-positive humor. Running time: 1 hours 37 minutes. In theaters.

In the new film “One of Them Days,” Keke Palmer and SZA team up for a wild and unpredictable adventure that will have you on the edge of your seat. The story follows two best friends who find themselves in desperate need of cash and decide to take matters into their own hands by pulling off a series of daring heists.

Palmer and SZA deliver stellar performances as the charismatic and resourceful duo, bringing a perfect balance of humor and heart to their characters. Their on-screen chemistry is palpable, making their friendship feel authentic and relatable.

The action-packed plot keeps you guessing at every turn, as the two friends navigate through a series of dangerous situations and close calls. The film’s pacing is fast and exhilarating, with plenty of twists and turns to keep you engaged from start to finish.

But what truly sets “One of Them Days” apart is its unique blend of comedy and drama. The film manages to seamlessly weave moments of light-hearted humor with more serious themes, creating a nuanced and well-rounded story that will leave you both laughing and on the edge of your seat.

Overall, “One of Them Days” is a must-see film that showcases the talents of both Keke Palmer and SZA. With its thrilling action sequences, heartfelt performances, and unexpected twists, this movie is sure to keep you entertained from beginning to end. Don’t miss out on this wild and unpredictable ride!

  • ‘One of Them Days’ review: Keke Palmer shines in LA-based comedy

Horror, not comedy, has been the go-to movie genre in recent years, but a movie like “One of Them Days,” starring Keke Palmer and, in her big-screen debut, SZA, is a good reminder of what we’ve been missing.

Creepy stuff and jump scares, we’ve been told, have proved better suited for channeling our abiding contemporary dread. But the communal joys of big-screen comedy have, and always will, suit dark days as much as light ones, if not more so. “One of Them Days,” for instance, happens to arrive while Los Angeles, where the movie is set, has been decimated by wildfires. The Southern California skies, though, are crystal clear in “One of Them Days.” In the opening moments, someone says, “It’s always cooler on the West side.”

“One of Them Days,” which had its premiere cancelled by the fires, is a welcome warm breeze for a movie landscape that has largely frozen out the comedy. There’s one overwhelming reason for this: Keke Palmer.

This is a buddy comedy, so it might seem unfair to single out one half of a duo. SZA, in her first feature, acquits herself well. But this is Palmer’s show.

Palmer plays Dreux, a Los Angeles waitress who, when her artist roommate Alyssa (SZA) gives their rent money to an untrustworthy boyfriend, Keshawn (Joshua David Neal), goes on a madcap, day-long odyssey to raise the money before they’re evicted. This seemingly low-stakes premise is itself a kind of throwback to a more 1990s-flavored movie. The antic spirit of F. Gary Gray’s “Friday” can be felt throughout “One of Them Days.”

The tone here, courtesy of director Lawrence Lamont, producer Issa Rae and screenwriter Syreeta Singleton, is amiably realistic. Aside from a few cartoonish flourishes, “One of Them Days” is grounded in a working-class reality where every step toward upward mobility for Dreux and Alyssa is swiftly knocked backward.

They live in a dilapidated apartment complex in the neighborhood of Baldwin Village, nicknamed the Jungles. When they’re forced to raise $1,500 — a race complete with a ticking-clock countdown to eviction, and, as things develop, until “certain death” — Dreux is also scheduled for the biggest job interview of her life, to become a franchise manager for the restaurant chain she’s employed by.

The satire of “One of Them Days” is mostly directed at the feeble opportunities afforded to those striving to break out of a paycheck-to-paycheck cycle. When the roommates seek a loan, their payday center advertises a comical APR of 1,900.5%. (The agent, who takes great pleasure in their credit scores, is memorably played by Keyla Monterroso Mejia.)

That’s just one of the characters the two encounter in their pleasantly meandering journey to raise money via everything from blood donation to Air Jordans hung on power lines. Some of the characters along the way include Katt Williams, as a conscientious homeless man who warns against predatory lending; Vanessa Bell Calloway’s stripper-turned-blood-bank-worker; a new white neighbor named Bethany (Maude Apatow); and Keshawn’s new hook-up (Janelle James), who proves the movie’s most regular villain, despite the looming presence of a fearsome gangster (Amin Joseph).

Anyone familiar with Rae’s “Insecure” will recognize some of the hallmarks of that HBO series, namely the struggles of Black women trying to get a leg up in Los Angeles while also juggling romantic interests that might come from a wide range of backgrounds. Here, that’s Dreux’s crush, Maniac (Patrick Cage), who drives a Mercedes and who she suspects is a criminal.

If all of this sounds somewhat low stakes (I failed to mention Lil Rel Howery as their prospective sneaker buyer), that’s more of a pleasing feature than a bug in “One of Them Days.” Besides, filling this movie with anything more — star cameos or broad comedy set pieces — would be a mistake. That would leave less room for the interplay between Palmer and SZA.

“One of Them Days” hinges on central buddy comedy, which Lamont seems to recognize even in his feature directorial debut. SZA’s uber-cool unsurprisingly transfers easily to the big screen; her performance is winning because it’s so unforced.

But it’s a testament to Palmer’s dynamism as a performer that “One of Them Days” would work no matter where their day takes them. There’s a freewheeling wit and ever-shifting subtlety to Palmer, who so enlivened Jordan Peele’s “Nope.” Only a theatrical comedy can really showcase charisma like hers. For an actress who’s hustled to get to this point, “One of Them” days is perfect platform for Palmer, scrappy and unstoppable.

“One of Them Days,” a Sony Pictures release, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association for language throughout, sexual material and brief drug use. Running time: 97 minutes. Three stars out of four.
