  • 5 things to know about Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard

The job Glenn did to maintain a pretty consistent level of play on defense this past year despite all the injuries on that side of the ball was pretty remarkable. When Sheppard hits the ground running in this new role come April, he’ll have plenty of pieces to work with.

His linebacker room will be strong with Anzalone, Campbell and Rodriguez all under contract. We’ll see what the Lions opt to do with Barnes set to become a free agent.

Detroit’s starting four upfront should be disruptive and versatile with Aidan Hutchinson, Alim McNeill, DJ Reader and Za’Darius Smith all under contract, plus a few key reserves coming back too.

Kerby Joseph, Brian Branch, Amik Robertson, Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. are all back in the secondary and that’s an area Detroit’s expected to continue to develop and add to this offseason by either re-signing Carlton Davis III, adding another veteran in free agency or continuing to add young talent to the mix via the draft.

Sheppard will have the pieces to implement his style of play and vision for this defense in 2025.

Sheppard once considered cutting his dreadlocks, believing the look might hinder his ability to get a job coaching in the NFL. Campbell encouraged Sheppard to keep his hairstyle, saying it was part of the young coach’s identity. Sheppard never forgot that conversation with Campbell and it’s allowed him to be his authentic self throughout his coaching career.

“I went through it and he’s like, ‘Thinking about cutting your what? What? Are you crazy? First of all, I love your hair,’” Sheppard said back in 2022. “He’s like, ‘But seriously, Shep, if I’m hiring you, if anybody’s hiring you, they’re hiring you because of you. You got those jobs because of who you are, not because of somebody you’re trying to become.’ And that resonated with me.”

    1. Former NFL Linebacker: Kelvin Sheppard played as a linebacker in the NFL for 8 seasons, suiting up for teams like the Buffalo Bills, Indianapolis Colts, Miami Dolphins, New York Giants, and Detroit Lions.
    2. Coaching Experience: Sheppard transitioned into coaching after retiring from playing in 2018. He started as a defensive analyst at the University of Louisiana in 2019 before joining the Detroit Lions as a defensive assistant in 2020. He was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2021.
    3. Player Development: Sheppard is known for his ability to develop young players and help them reach their full potential. Under his guidance, the Lions defense has shown improvement and growth throughout the 2021 season.
    4. Defensive Philosophy: Sheppard’s defensive philosophy focuses on aggressive and physical play, emphasizing fundamentals and technique. He aims to create a unit that is disciplined, tough, and able to generate turnovers.
    5. Leadership Qualities: Sheppard is praised for his leadership qualities, including his communication skills, motivational tactics, and ability to connect with players. He is respected by his peers and players for his work ethic and dedication to the game.

  • Lions announce John Morton, Kelvin Sheppard as new coordinators

The Lions have made it official with their two new coordinators.

Detroit announced on Thursday that John Morton has been hired to serve as offensive coordinator and Kelvin Sheppard has been promoted to defensive coordinator.

Morton replaces Ben Johnson, who was hired as Bears head coach. Sheppard replaces Aaron Glenn, who departed to become the Jets head coach.

Morton was Detroit’s senior offensive assistant in 2022 under head coach Dan Campbell before heading to Denver to be the club’s passing game coordinator for the last two seasons. He previously worked with Campbell in New Orleans in 2016 when Campbell was the team’s tight ends coach and Morton was the receivers coach.

Sheppard, a Bills third-round pick in 2011, ended his playing career with the Lions in 2018 and was hired as the team’s outside linebackers coach under Campbell in 2021. He then served as linebackers coach for the last three seasons.

The Detroit Lions have officially announced John Morton as their new offensive coordinator and Kelvin Sheppard as their new defensive coordinator.

Morton, who previously served as the wide receivers coach for the New York Jets and the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, brings a wealth of experience to the Lions’ coaching staff. Known for his innovative play-calling and ability to develop young talent, Morton is expected to bring a new level of creativity to the Lions’ offense.

Sheppard, a former NFL linebacker who played for the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, and New York Giants, will be taking on his first coaching role with the Lions. Known for his leadership on the field and his football IQ, Sheppard is expected to bring a new level of intensity and discipline to the Lions’ defense.

Both Morton and Sheppard are excited to join the Lions’ coaching staff and are looking forward to helping the team achieve success in the upcoming season. Lions fans can expect to see a new and improved offense and defense under the guidance of these two talented coordinators.

  • Source: Lions promote LBs coach Kelvin Sheppard to DC

DETROIT — The Lions didn’t have to look far to find their new defensive coordinator.

Detroit promoted former linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard to replace Aaron Glenn in the vacant coaching role, a source told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler on Saturday, confirming an NFL.com report.

After a record-breaking 15-win season in Detroit, Glenn and former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson accepted head coaching positions with the New York Jets and Chicago Bears, respectively.

Sheppard joined the Lions’ staff as an outside linebackers coach at the beginning of coach Dan Campbell’s tenure in Detroit in 2021. For the past three seasons, he coached the entire linebackers group and has a knack for developing young talent.

Sheppard, 37, spent eight seasons in the NFL from 2011 to 2018 playing for Buffalo, Indianapolis, Miami, the New York Giants and Detroit. He was a third-round pick (68th overall) in the 2011 NFL draft by the Bills.

After losing in the NFC divisional round to Washington as the No. 1 seed, Campbell said he would evaluate internal and outside candidates to help fill the coaching vacancies before he chose Sheppard as his defensive coordinator.

“I think we’ve got guys on staff that I think are more than qualified and would be outstanding in those roles, but that does not mean that I’m not looking outside either,” Campbell said Jan. 20. “So, I want what I believe is going to be as close to what we have been as possible, and we don’t lose what we’re about and our identity, and like what you just asked, we’re going to stay true to who we are, and if you’re somebody that doesn’t feel comfortable with that, then no, I don’t — this isn’t the job for you.”

The Detroit Lions have promoted linebackers coach Kelvin Sheppard to defensive coordinator, according to a source within the organization. Sheppard, who joined the Lions’ coaching staff in 2019, has quickly risen through the ranks and impressed the team’s decision-makers with his knowledge of the game and ability to develop players.

This promotion comes after the Lions parted ways with former defensive coordinator Cory Undlin following a disappointing 2020 season. Sheppard will now be tasked with turning around a defense that struggled mightily last year, particularly against the run.

It will be interesting to see how Sheppard approaches his new role and what changes he implements to improve the Lions’ defense. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Houston’s Kelvin Sampson Shares Thoughts On BYU Basketball

Houston’s Kelvin Sampson Shares Thoughts On BYU Basketball

BYU basketball is set to take on No. 14 Houston in the Fertitta Center on Saturday.

The matchup is a barometer for Kevin Young’s 10-2 BYU squad. They face a Houston program that has become a second-weekend fixture in college hoops, reaching the Sweet 16 or farther in the last five NCAA Tournaments.

The Coogs in “Clutch City” have been dominant on their home floor. BYU will look to end a nation’s best 29-game home winning streak for Houston.

Head Coach Kelvin Sampson has led Houston through their climb back among the nation’s elite since 2014. Last year, he led the Coogs to a regular season Big 12 championship with a 13-3 record.

Kelvin Sampson weighs in on BYU Basketball

In preparation for Saturday’s game against BYU, Sampson spoke to the media and shared his thoughts on Kevin Young’s team.

“Their length in the backcourt, I think, is excellent with (Egor) Demin and the (Kanon) Catchings kid. They’re both around 6-9. They are long and very skilled. They both can get 20 in different ways,” Sampson said. “Catchings is a threat behind the three-point line. Demin, as a decision-maker, is really good at hitting rollers and really good at hitting the opposite corner. They’re extremely well-coached and very disciplined.

“I think part of their strength is they have two fives: (Fousseyni) Traore and (Keba) Keita. They have different strengths. Keita is probably a better shot blocker, probably a better vertical athlete. Traore is more of a traditional low-post player, who can catch and score it. But they complement each other so well. Then, BYU is the number one defensive rebounding team, so it’s hard to get offensive rebounds against them.”

BYU is outrebounding opponents by 13.2 boards per game. In the Big 12 opening win at home against Arizona State, BYU outrebounded the Sun Devils 38-28.

Along with praising BYU’s new personnel, Sampson is impressed with the returning talent on BYU’s roster.

    Returning talent on BYU

BYU faced Houston early last season in Big 12 play at the Marriott Center. With 2:20 left in the game, the Cougars in blue were tied with Houston at 68, but Sampson’s Coogs closed on a 7-0 run to win 75-68 and earn their first road win in Big 12 action.

Four BYU players from that game last season will be in action against the veteran Houston squad that brings back four of its five starters from last year’s meeting.

“They have a lot of kids on their team that can get 20 to 30 on any given night. Their fives are positioned really well for their team. They’ve got two pros on their team in Catchings and Demin, but (Dallin) Hall, it’s Hall and (Richie) Saunders and (Trevin) Knell. All of those guys can really shoot. They’re dangerous,” said Sampson.

“This is a team that went on the road last year and won some big games. And they lost some games where they dominated for 25, 30, 35 minutes, and lost at the end–great win at Kansas. They’ve got a lot of those same guys back. And they’ve added some really good talent. So BYU is good. I think that’s their baseline. I think they’ve got a chance to be really good as the season goes along.”

Houston’s head coach, Kelvin Sampson, recently shared his thoughts on BYU basketball in a recent interview. Sampson praised the Cougars’ program and their success in recent years, noting their strong coaching staff and talented players.

Sampson highlighted BYU’s offensive firepower and their ability to score at a high level, pointing to their efficient three-point shooting and strong inside presence. He also commended their defensive tenacity and their ability to disrupt opposing offenses.

Overall, Sampson expressed respect for BYU as a program and believes they are a team to watch out for in the upcoming season. With their combination of offensive skill and defensive intensity, the Cougars could make some noise in the college basketball landscape.

As Houston prepares for their upcoming matchup against BYU, Sampson’s comments serve as a reminder of the challenge that lies ahead. It will be an exciting game to watch as two talented teams face off on the court.

Joe Pyfer Vs. Kelvin Gastelum In The Works UFC Mexico City ‘Fight Night’ On March 29, 2025

Two Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Middleweights will collide in Mexico City next year.

Multiple sources confirmed to MMAmania.com today (Tues., Dec. 31, 2024) that top 185 lb prospect Joe Pyfer will fight former interim Middleweight title challenger Kelvin Gastelum at UFC Mexico City on March 29, 2025, which will go down inside Arena CDMX, in Mexico City, Mexico.

Pyfer (13-3) suffered his first UFC loss in 2024 in his first promotional main event to Jack Hermansson at UFC Vegas 86 but rebounded in absolutely brutal fashion by knocking out Marc-Andre Barriault at UFC 303, securing his third Performance of the Night bonus (watch highlights).

“BodyBagz” holds a 4-1 UFC record with four finishes.

Gastelum (19-9) only had one fight in 2024 against Daniel Rodriguez at UFC Saudi Arabia, in which he won a unanimous decision; however, the pre-fight drama overshadowed his win.

Gastelum vs. “D-Rod” was supposed to take place at Welterweight, but before weigh-ins, Gastelum informed the promotion that he couldn’t make 170 lbs, forcing the promotion to change the scheduled fight to a Middleweight bout.

UFC CEO Dana White was not happy.

It has been a tough several years for the 33-year-old, only winning three of his last nine fights, but a win over a red-hot Pyfer would put him right back in the thick of the division.

The only other fights confirmed for UFC Mexico at this time are a pair of Flyweight fights, Edgar Chairez vs. C.J. Vergara and Ronaldo Rodríguez vs. Kevin Borjas.
