Lions star Kerby Joseph has strong words for anyone labeling him dirty
Ever since he inadvertently injured Los Angeles Rams tight end Tyler Higbee and Minnesota Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson last season, Detroit Lions star safety Kerby Joseph has been labeled as a dirty player by some.
And, that label might have hurt Joseph’s bid for his first Pro Bowl nod in 2024, which is something Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn hinted at. Joseph was in the lead at free safety following the fan portion of voting, but he ultimately fell short once the votes of players and coaches came in.
During a recent appearance the “NFL Spotlight with Ari Meirov” podcast, the subject of the label on Joseph was broached, and Joseph had strong words for anyone who thinks he’s a dirty player.
“I don’t care about nobody’s opinion, for real,” Joseph said. “This is football. When you sign up to play this game, you sign up for injuries. … The people complaining about dirty hits — they just soft. They don’t know football.
“I feel like I got that narrative because old boy (Matthew Stafford) wanted to come and talk crazy because he mic’d up,” Joseph added.
Joseph is referencing a mic’d up clip that featured former Lions and current Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford calling him “dirty as f***.”
“Hey, that’s a good hit. That’s a good hit. You dirty as f*** though and you know it,” Stafford said to Joseph. “You dirty as f***. It’s been on tape. I’ve seen it.”
Joseph was not flagged or fined for either hit, and even Hockenson didn’t think Joseph meant to hurt him.
“I know Kerby pretty well. I’ve played with him. I don’t necessarily think it was [intended to injure],” he said last April. “You go back on the tape and you see what happened. I don’t think it was [intentional]. I just want to make sure it wasn’t and that’s why I’m using my voice here. Players protect players. That’s in any facet of the league. You don’t want a defensive guy head-hunting or knee- hunting, and the same thing for an offensive guy.”
While we can’t say for sure that the label was behind Joseph’s Pro Bowl snub, there really is no other explanation. Joseph’s numbers were so far and above better than everyone else at his position that it’s simply inexcusable he didn’t get the nod.
Joseph took the snub all in stride and he ended up getting the more important honor, which was a first-team All-Pro nod.

Lions star Kerby Joseph has strong words for anyone labeling him dirtyIn a recent interview, Lions star Kerby Joseph addressed the criticism he has received for his aggressive playing style on the field. Some have labeled him as dirty player, but Joseph vehemently denies these accusations.
“I play hard and I play to win, but I am not a dirty player,” Joseph said. “I take pride in my physicality and toughness, but I always play within the rules of the game. It’s frustrating to be constantly labeled as dirty just because I play with intensity.”
Joseph went on to say that he believes his critics are simply trying to distract from his skill and impact on the field. “I know that I am a valuable player for my team and I will continue to play my game, regardless of what others may say,” he added.
As one of the top players in the league, Joseph’s strong words serve as a reminder that toughness and physicality are a crucial part of the game, and should not be mistaken for dirty play. Fans can expect to see him continue to dominate on the field, playing with passion and determination.

Lions safety Kerby Joseph reportedly snubbed from 2025 Pro Bowl roster
The 2025 NFL Pro Bowl roster is expected to be released on Thursday, and according to one report, one of the most deserving Detroit Lions players will not be on that list. Per the Detroit Free Press, Lions safety Kerby Joseph will not be named a Pro Bowler this year.
Joseph was one of 19 Lions players who finished in the top-five at his position in fan Pro Bowl votes. In fact, he received more fan votes than any other free safety. However, Pro Bowl rosters are determined by three, equally-weighted factors: fan votes, player votes, and coaches votes. That means Joseph wasn’t carried enough by his peers.
It’s one of the rare times in which the fans had it right, and the people inside NFL organizations didn’t because Joseph was more than worthy of the honors. He currently leads the NFL with nine interceptions, has the highest PFF grade of any NFL safety (90.7), and the highest coverage grade of any defensive back (91.5).
“Man, he came up in a big way,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said of Joseph after his two-interception performance on Monday night against the 49ers. “Not just that, the picks, he had some critical tackles in this game, and (he) just really showed up for us.”
On the season, Joseph 77 tackles, one tackle for loss, 12 passes defended and nine interceptions. Since entering the league in 2022, no one has more interceptions (17) than Joseph.
Joseph appeared to react to the news on Wednesday night via Twitter:
Pro Bowl roster are expected to be released in full at 9 a.m. ET on Thursday.
The NFL Pro Bowl is a prestigious event where the best players in the league are recognized for their talents and achievements. However, it seems that Lions safety Kerby Joseph has been snubbed from the 2025 Pro Bowl roster.Despite an impressive season where Joseph has shown his skills on the field, it appears that he has been overlooked by the selection committee. Fans and analysts alike are questioning the decision, as Joseph has been a standout player for the Lions throughout the season.
Many believe that Joseph’s snub is a disservice to his hard work and dedication to the game. His absence from the Pro Bowl roster is a disappointment for both him and Lions fans who were hoping to see him represent the team on a national stage.
Hopefully, this snub will only serve as motivation for Joseph to continue to prove his worth and earn a spot in future Pro Bowls. In the meantime, Lions fans will have to wait and see if Joseph can use this as fuel to elevate his game even further in the seasons to come.

Detroit Lions Kerby Joseph will not be part of the annual Pro Bowl games this year.
According to the Detroit Free Press, the talented safety will not be among the three NFC safeties to participate in the annual NFL competition and skills showdown.
The former third round pick leads the NFL in interceptions (nine) and recorded the most amount of fan votes at the free safety position.
Xavier McKinney, Camryn Bynum and Reed Blankenship all finished behind the 24-year-old in fan voting.
After the Lions defeated the 49ers on Monday Night Football, Dan Campbell expressed, “Man, he came up in a big way. Not just that, the picks, he had some critical tackles in this game, and he just really showed up for us.”
Despite the defense giving up more points than they would like the last four games, the defense’s mindset is to reload and work to execute Aaron Glenn’s game plan for the Minnesota Vikings this week.
“It’s to reload and go back to work and execute this plan that we have for these guys and find a way to get some takeaways and make plays,” Campbell said. “I mean, it’s really that simple and we came up with two critical takeaways in that game that were big for us. So, as with anything, are there things we want to clean up? Yeah, but (Aaron Glenn) AG’s got a good plan, guys will be ready for this. We know the challenge, I mean, we just talked about it.

The Detroit Lions will be well represented when 2025 Pro Bowl selections are announced Thursday, but one player who won’t be on the list could be this year’s biggest snub.
Lions safety Kerby Joseph, who leads the NFL with nine interceptions, was not one of the three safeties picked for the NFC Pro Bowl roster, the Free Press learned Wednesday night.
Joseph finished first in fan voting at free safety, ahead of three other NFC players: Xavier McKinney of the Green Bay Packers, Camryn Bynum of the Minnesota Vikings and Reed Blankenship of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Lions safety Brian Branch, who finished second in fan voting at strong safety, was picked for the Pro Bowl.

Joseph on Wednesday night tweeted a confused reaction GIF with no words needed.
Joseph ranks third on the Lions with 76 tackles and is tied for the NFL lead with 12 pass deflections among safeties. He had two interceptions in Monday night’s win over the San Francisco 49ers and had a third interception nullified by penalty, the second pick he has lost to penalty this season.
“My superpower I feel like is taking the ball away,” Joseph said Monday, adding it was a goal of his to lead the NFL in picks in 2024.
McKinney, expected to make the Pro Bowl when rosters are announced at 9 a.m. Thursday on NFL Network, is second in the league with seven interceptions.

“I envisioned it,” Joseph said Monday. “I don’t feel like Imagined it. I mean, I knew this was going to happen. I just feel like, I didn’t really put a number on it, man, I just wanted to lead the pack. I wanted to separate myself, I wanted to be different. I want to be great in this league. I don’t want to be no average Joe. I don’t want to be good, I want to be great. I want to be able to say, ‘Yeah, I deserve that gold jacket one day,’ so I feel like every year I just keep getting better, keep getting better and I don’t think I’m ever going to stop.”
Joseph, 24, was a third-round draft pick by the Lions in 2022 out of Illinois. He had four picks in each of his first two seasons.
Branch, a second-round pick in 2023 out of Alabama, has four picks and 103 total tackles in 15 games this season.

Lions’ Kerby Joseph, NFL interception leader, snubbed for Pro BowlThe Detroit Lions have had a tough season, but one bright spot has been the performance of safety Kerby Joseph. Joseph has been a ball hawk all season, leading the NFL in interceptions with 7. Despite his impressive play, Joseph was shockingly left off the Pro Bowl roster.
Fans and analysts alike are scratching their heads at the snub, as Joseph has been a standout player on a struggling team. His ability to create turnovers and make big plays in the secondary has not gone unnoticed, and many believe he deserved a spot in the Pro Bowl.
Hopefully, this snub will only fuel Joseph’s fire and motivate him to continue his stellar play next season. Lions fans can take solace in knowing that they have a true playmaker in Joseph, even if the Pro Bowl voters failed to recognize his talent.
