  • Three keys to victory and a prediction

The Nevada men’s basketball team hosts UNLV on Saturday night. Nevada Sports Net’s Chris Murray breaks down the game with his three keys to victory and prediction. This feature is presented in partnership with Bradley, Drendel & Jeanney.

    UNLV (11-10, 5-5 MW) at Nevada (11-10, 3-7)

    When: Saturday, 7 p.m.

Where: Lawlor Events Center (11,536 capacity)

    TV/Radio: CBS Sports Network/95.5 FM

    Online: None

    Betting line: None posted yet

Three keys for Nevada to win

    1. Damage down low: The Wolf Pack has been built to score inside first, which will open things up on the outside next. The season hasn’t necessarily played out that way, although Nevada has been far more effective inside the arc than outside of it in league play. The Wolf Pack is making 60.9 percent of its “close twos” and 39.3 percent of its “long twos,” both well above average. It’s shooting 32.1 percent from three, well below average. And the good news for Nevada in this matchup is UNLV does not defend the paint well. In fact, it’s a weakness as Rebels rank 203rd in the nation in two-point defense. UNLV does have a big center in Jeremiah Cherry (6-foot-11, 280 pounds), but the Rebels have been hurt in the post in their 10 losses, allowing foes to shoot 57.1 percent inside the arc in those games.

    2. Even at point guard: Dedan Thomas Jr. is an elite point guard for UNLV, averaging 16.2 points and 4.7 assists on 42.5 percent shooting, including 35.1 percent from three. There isn’t much difference in his stats in wins and losses, as he’s actually scored better and more efficiently in defeats. The same cannot be said about Nevada’s primary point guard Kobe Sanders, who started the season in elite fashion but has experienced struggles since. The fifth-year senior averaged 16.7 ppg on 52.9 percent shooting in November; 12.6 ppg on 40.6 percent shooting in December; and 13.4 ppg on 38.6 percent shooting in January. Tyler Rolison sniped a good share of the point guard minutes in Wednesday’s loss at Boise State, although that didn’t jolt more out of Sanders, who was held to nine points (third lowest this season) on 3-of-9 shooting. If Nevada can match Thomas at point guard production, that’s a plus.

    3. Game-winning plays late: This is a matchup of “What Could Have Been” teams, as Nevada and UNLV are both 11-10 with each 2-6 in contests decided by six points or less (that mark improves to 3-6 for Nevada if you include its 11-point overtime win at Fresno State). While Wolf Pack fans are plenty familiar with Nevada’s close-game struggles, UNLV has been just as bad, losing its last three games by a combined nine points, including contests to Utah State and New Mexico, the MW’s top-two teams. There’s also a one-point loss at Dayton, a five-point loss to Northwestern and a six-point loss at Memphis. So, this season could look a lot different if UNLV could close. Same could be said for Nevada, which played six straight games decided by six points or less/overtime (going 2-4) before playing four straight that have not been close. Nevada will likely be tested in late-game execution again in this one.

    Prediction

Nevada 67, UNLV 65: Incredibly, Nevada is 1-9 against the spread in its last 10 games, a major underachievement given its talent level and the quality with which it played over the first month of the season. The Wolf Pack showed a lot more defensive verve in its midweek loss at Boise State but is coming off arguably the worst back-to-back offensive games of the Steve Alford era. UNLV, as it typically is, has been extremely inconsistent in 2024-25 with some great showings and some terrible ones. But this team is 2-9 in Quad 1 or 2 games, so I’ll take Nevada in a close one. Season record: 14-7

Three Keys to Victory and a Prediction for the upcoming game

Key #1: Strong Defense – The team must focus on shutting down the opponent’s offense and limiting their scoring opportunities. This will require solid communication, quick decision-making, and strong defensive positioning.

Key #2: Efficient Offense – The team needs to capitalize on scoring opportunities and make the most of their possessions. This means taking smart shots, moving the ball effectively, and executing their offensive plays with precision.

Key #3: Mental Toughness – In a high-pressure game, mental toughness will be crucial. The team must stay focused, composed, and resilient, even when facing adversity or setbacks.

Prediction: With a strong defensive effort, efficient offense, and mental toughness, I predict that the team will come out victorious in a close and hard-fought game. The final score will be 75-70 in favor of our team. Let’s go, [Team Name]! #VictoryIsOurs

  • 5 keys that defined Calipari’s Kentucky basketball legacy

On Saturday, John Calipari will return to Lexington for the first time since he left Kentucky for Arkansas in April.

His homecoming is one of the biggest events of the 2024-25 men’s college basketball calendar. Calipari is, after all, responsible for taking Kentucky to seven Elite Eights, four Final Fours and one national championship title, as well as for finding and signing elite young talent who went on to be NBA stars.

“Walking in that arena, storied arena, and walking in the wrong door, the other door,” Calipari said during his weekly radio show ahead of Saturday’s showdown (9 p.m. ET, ESPN). “Seeing my friends the night before. Having my friends — dear friends, lifelong friends — but they’re Kentucky fans. Their whole life they’ve been Kentucky fans. I just hope they’re neutral. But they are Kentucky fans. We gave our heart and soul. [My wife] was like a mother to those kids. So, yes, there is going to be some emotion.”

For all of Calipari’s successes, the end of his tenure in Lexington was frustrating — for everyone. When he left, his legacy was marred by two NCAA tournament first-round upsets in the previous three seasons, a public spat with the school’s football coach and a lack of bringing Kentucky more of the national titles fans were accustomed to.

He was expected to bring his earlier successes to the Wildcats’ SEC rivals in Fayetteville, but the Razorbacks are currently struggling in SEC play, having lost six of their past seven games. Additionally, star freshman and NBA prospect Boogie Fland is out for the season because of a hand injury. The Razorbacks will need a miraculous finish to play their way onto the NCAA tournament bubble.

It’s a stark contrast to how Kentucky is faring in its new era, under coach Mark Pope.

The No. 12 Wildcats are poised to secure a top seed in the NCAA tournament after marquee wins over Duke, Gonzaga, Louisville, Florida and Tennessee. They’re currently 4-3 in SEC play, commendable given the caliber of the league this season. They’re clearly thriving under their new coach, who has brought a new energy to the blue blood program.

Still, Pope hopes Calipari is treated with grace in his return.

“We have been blessed at the University of Kentucky to have some of the greatest coaches to ever coach the game of basketball,” Pope said on his weekly radio show Wednesday. “Certainly, Cal is one of those. He’s a Hall of Fame coach. In his 15-year tenure, what he accomplished at the University of Kentucky was incredible. In some ways, he revolutionized the game of college basketball, and that probably won’t be reproduced in the same way he did it.”

Ahead of Saturday, let’s take a look at key moments that defined Calipari’s 15-year tenure in Lexington.

    An explosive, star-filled debut

When Calipari became Kentucky’s head coach on April 1, 2009, he was inheriting a program that had been stuck in the worst postseason drought in school history. Though it had made the NCAA tournament nearly every year since 1992, Kentucky hadn’t reached the Final Four in 11 years.

Those 2009-10 Wildcats went viral. Calipari had signed one of the best recruiting classes in the country, including DeMarcus Cousins and John Wall, who went on to be first-team AP All-Americans. They and three others were picked in the first round of the 2010 NBA draft — a record at the time. “The John Wall Dance,” performed by the star freshman before the season began, was mimicked around the country.

Calipari invited Drake to Big Blue Madness, Kentucky’s preseason kickoff, and the rapper showed up, announcing his new allegiance to the Wildcats. (In his 2015 song, “Scholarship,” the Canadian star even rapped, “I rock Kentucky blue,” highlighting his friendship with Calipari and other Wildcats.)

He and other celebrities — Jay Z, Ashley Judd, Samuel L. Jackson, Shaquille O’Neal — attended Kentucky games, putting a stamp on the program’s newfound popularity and cultural appeal beyond basketball. That the Wildcats once again fell short in the Elite Eight in 2010 didn’t matter. Calipari had restored the program’s name and elevated expectations in his first year on the job.

Yet, Calipari also angered some when he said the 2010 NBA draft was “the biggest day in the history of Kentucky’s program.” The statement hinted at his eventual approach to college basketball: sign as many future pros as possible and market Kentucky as their best landing spot before the NBA.

    A national championship and a near-perfect season

In 2010, Calipari received a tip about a young talent in the Midwest who’d grown seven inches over the summer and would soon attract offers from every top program in the country. At Perspectives Charter School in Chicago, Anthony Davis didn’t even have access to a real gym, so he and his teammates had to practice at a nearby church.

Coming off the success of his first season in Lexington, Calipari pursued Davis, who would anchor a decorated 2011 recruiting class featuring three top-10 prospects (Davis, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Marquis Teague). Davis became just the second freshman in the sport’s history to win the Wooden Award after he and his teammates led Kentucky to its eighth national championship in 2012. Davis and Kidd-Gilchrist then became the first teammates to go first and second in the NBA draft, respectively, that year.

The national championship run not only made Kentucky a giant of that era — it was part of four Final Four appearances from 2011 to 2015 — it also established the blue blood program as an NBA factory for young stars. And Calipari seemed to own his reputation as the greatest recruiter of the one-and-done era.

Prior to the 2014-15 season, he held an NBA combine-like workout in Lexington just for his team, attended by dozens of NBA scouts and executives. That team, starring Karl-Anthony Towns and Devin Booker, won its first 38 games and was undefeated until it lost to Wisconsin in the Final Four. Still, six players — including No. 1 pick Towns — were selected in the NBA draft that summer.

It seemed then as if Calipari’s greatest years had just started. If Mike Krzyzewski was the king of college basketball, then Calipari was the game’s prince. The truth, however, was that Kentucky had unknowingly peaked.

An evolving landscape costs Kentucky its grip on elite talent

In 2013, Krzyzewski stated his concerns about the trend of freshmen turning pro after one season and the instability the shift could create within the sport. Two years later, Krzyzewski won his fifth and final national championship with a team led by Jahlil Okafor, Tyus Jones and Justise Winslow, three one-and-done players. Coach K’s switch had coincided with a swift change throughout the sport: Calipari no longer had a monopoly on one-and-done talent.

Elite players continued to sign with the Wildcats — De’Aaron Fox, Bam Adebayo and Malik Monk led the program to the Elite Eight in 2017 — but at a decreasing rate. The 2019 recruiting class represented the first time Calipari had failed to sign a top-10 recruit in ESPN’s rankings at Kentucky. By then, however, the sport was changing again, with coaches craving more veteran talent via the transfer portal, which was introduced in 2018.

On top of that, an additional year of eligibility granted to every Division I player because of the COVID-19 pandemic meant more fourth-, fifth- and sixth-year players were available. Teams could regroup, and had to, every year with experienced players, rather than going with freshmen. Combine all this with the change to transfer eligibility and NIL rules, and the market for talent has significantly shifted toward older players. For Calipari, who failed to reach another Final Four after 2015, it had rapidly become more difficult to recruit and win.

“Everybody was mad about a young player coming in and only staying one year,” Calipari said of the portal during a 2023 SportsCenter interview. “Well, now we’re doing it with older players. It’s the same as one-and-done.”

    He added: “We’ve got 26- and 27-year-olds playing 18-year-olds.”

A disconnect with a passionate fan base

Before 2014-15, Calipari hosted a celebrity softball game for charity. Fans packed a ballpark near the Lexington campus to watch local standouts and celebrities such as Steve Zahn (“The White Lotus”) and former NFL star Cris Carter compete. Calipari was hounded by fans as he walked throughout the venue. They wanted pictures. They wanted to shake his hand. They wanted to see him up close.

Nearly a decade later, however, Calipari, per sources, became reclusive and disconnected from a fan base frustrated that he hadn’t hung more national championship banners from the rafters at Rupp Arena. He called members of Big Blue Nation, Kentucky’s fan base, “Basketball Bennies,” which some saw as condescending. He also stopped doing some of his weekly news conferences himself, instead tagging an assistant to do them on his behalf. And he ignored interview requests from local and national media.

As Calipari appeared to distance himself from the spotlight while trying to adapt to the changing sport, his staff experienced significant turnover as well.

“You know,” said one former staffer who worked under him at Kentucky, “Calipari only does things one way.”

On the court, Calipari’s squads collapsed. We’ll never know what a team led by Philadelphia 76ers star Tyrese Maxey would have done at the end of the 2019-20 season because the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the cancellation of the NCAA tournament. During the 2020-21 campaign, Kentucky finished 9-16, its worst record in more than 100 years. A year later, a 26-win group led by Wooden Award winner Oscar Tshiebwe earned a 2-seed in NCAA tournament but was upset by 15-seed Saint Peter’s in the opening round.

Kentucky’s supporters experienced a feeling they had not endured in over a decade: embarrassment.

“We were all ready for this year,” Calipari said in an Instagram post after the loss. “This team didn’t disappoint and I remain proud and fond of each of these players. Please steer your disappointment and anger toward me. These kids did this for all of the [Big Blue Nation] and I wish I could have dragged them over the finish line.”

Just three years after he’d led his team to the Elite Eight in 2019, Calipari had suffered through two unimaginable seasons. The marriage between Kentucky and Calipari, it seemed, was suddenly on the rocks.

Arkansas’ Calipari on last-second win vs. Georgia: ‘These kids fight’

John Calipari talks about the events that led to the Razorbacks getting their first win of conference play and the ebbs and flows that come with the game of basketball.

Amid an apparent rift with his team’s fan base and even his own athletic department over athletics facilities, Calipari — who had a lifetime contract — entered the 2023-24 season with a sense of urgency. He had multiple projected lottery picks (Reed Sheppard and Rob Dillingham) again. He had Antonio Reeves (20.2 PPG, 45% from the 3-point line), one of America’s best players. He also had the best 3-point shooting team in America.

But then it happened again. The 3-seeded Wildcats fell to 14-seed Oakland in the first round of the NCAA tournament. It was Kentucky’s third consecutive failure to reach the second weekend, and the second opening-round loss in three years.

Days later, Calipari and AD Mitch Barnhart held a joint interview together on a local TV station as questions about Calipari’s future percolated. They wanted to show the top brass at Kentucky and its most prominent coach were on the same page.

“I put my heart and soul in this program,” Calipari said during the interview with Lex18, a local station in Lexington. “So, yes, I care. What we do is a reflection of how we are and how much we care. The state — I believe I’ve proven who I am across the state.”

Just over a week after that, Calipari bolted for Arkansas. And one of Kentucky’s most impressive, trend-setting but ultimately turbulent and troubling chapters ended.

    1. Recruiting Dominance: Calipari’s ability to consistently bring in top-tier talent to Kentucky has been a major factor in the team’s success. His recruiting prowess has led to multiple No. 1 ranked recruiting classes and produced numerous NBA draft picks.
    2. Final Four Appearances: Calipari has led the Wildcats to four Final Four appearances during his tenure, including a national championship in 2012. His teams have consistently been contenders in the NCAA tournament, making deep runs and capturing the attention of college basketball fans.
    3. Player Development: Calipari’s emphasis on player development has been another key to his success at Kentucky. Many players have improved their skills and draft stock under his guidance, with several going on to have successful NBA careers.
    4. SEC Dominance: Under Calipari, Kentucky has been a dominant force in the SEC, winning multiple conference championships and consistently being ranked among the top teams in the country. His teams have set high standards for success in the conference.
    5. Cultural Impact: Calipari’s tenure at Kentucky has had a significant impact on the college basketball landscape. His innovative coaching style, commitment to excellence, and ability to attract top talent have raised the bar for programs across the country. He has helped solidify Kentucky as a powerhouse program with a rich tradition and a bright future.

  • Three keys to victory and a prediction

The Nevada men’s basketball team plays at Boise State on Wednesday night. Nevada Sports Net’s Chris Murray breaks down the game with his three keys to victory and prediction. This feature is presented in partnership with Bradley, Drendel & Jeanney.

    Nevada (11-9, 3-6 MW) at Boise State (13-7, 5-4)

    When: Wednesday, 7 p.m. Pacific

    Where: ExtraMile Arena (12,644 capacity)

    TV/Radio: CBS Sports Network/95.5 FM

    Online: None

Betting line: Boise State by 7.5; total of 137.5

Three keys for Nevada to win

    1. Play with pace: Nevada coach Steve Alford has said in recent days the Wolf Pack’s offensive pace (13th slowest in the nation) is a major problem. The Wolf Pack doesn’t have a traditional point guard on its roster and too often allows the opposing defense to set up before attacking. Nevada needs to play faster – while not turning the ball over like it did two games ago – against a Boise State defense that has its lowest KenPom defensive rank (94th) since 2018-19. That defense has been even worse in league play, so it’s a vulnerable unit that doesn’t create turnovers (275th in the nation in turnovers created per possession). Nevada needs to push the ball but also not take bad shots because there won’t be many second-chance opportunities as Boise State ranks first in the nation in defensive rebounding rate.

    2. Strong paint defense: Boise State’s 5-4 start to MW play has been disappointing, but the Broncos lead the league in adjusted offensive rating in MW games (121.3 points per 100 possessions; Nevada is seventh at 107.7). The offense has not been Boise State’s issue despite the Broncos not being a great 3-point shooting team (32.2 percent overall; 34.1 percent in league). This team is excellent at scoring in the paint, making 58 percent of its two-point shots, 20th in the nation. Tyson Degenhart does most of that work, making 88-of-124 close twos (71 percent), but O’Mar Stanley provides a post presence and Javan Buchanan and Andrew Meadow have been great rim finishers. Nevada doesn’t play a lot of zone, but this could be a game to pull it out to help defend the post, which has been an issue in league play.

    3. Make open shots: Boise State’s biggest issue in MW games has been its 3-point defense as opponents are making 42 percent of their treys after the Broncos held foes to 29.5 percent shooting from three in non-league games. That’s almost a mirror image to Nevada, which played good 3-point defense in non-league but has not in MW action. Some of that could be a little fluky, but Boise State’s MW opponents have made 71-of-169 threes. Nevada is going to get some open shots from beyond the arc in this game and must make them. That’s been a problem as the Wolf Pack is shooting just 32 percent from three in MW action after making 41.2 percent (second in the nation) in non-league games. Nevada was 12-of-24 from three in its game at Boise State last season and will need something like that to score the upset.

    Prediction

Boise State 78, Nevada 68: This is not a great matchup for the Wolf Pack, whose defense is likely to get shredded by the Broncos, who have been scoring at a great rate despite recent struggles. Boise State is 2-4 in its last six games, with coach Leon Rice saying his team hit “rock bottom” after its last game, a three-point loss at Colorado State, while declaring major changes were coming. Boise State has had a full week off since then to prepare for Nevada, which also hit rock bottom last week, losing to Utah State and San Diego State by a combined 40 points. One team will bounce off that rock bottom Wednesday night, and the guess is it’s Boise State unless the Wolf Pack hits 10-plus threes, which is possible as both teams in this matchup are super inconsistent. Season record: 13-7

Three keys to victory and a prediction:

    1. Strong defense: In order to secure a win, the team must focus on shutting down their opponents and preventing them from scoring. This means playing tight defense, communicating effectively, and staying disciplined.

    2. Efficient offense: Offense is just as important as defense in securing a victory. The team must be able to move the ball effectively, make smart decisions, and capitalize on scoring opportunities.

    3. Mental toughness: In a high-pressure game, mental toughness is key. The team must stay focused, stay positive, and not let setbacks derail their performance.

Prediction: With a strong defense, efficient offense, and mental toughness, I predict that the team will come out on top with a narrow victory in a close game.

  • 3 keys for Xavier Musketeers to beat Creighton Bluejays in Omaha

    1. Strong defense: The Xavier Musketeers will need to bring their A-game defensively to shut down Creighton’s high-powered offense. This means playing tough man-to-man defense, contesting every shot, and limiting second-chance opportunities for the Bluejays.
    2. Efficient offense: Xavier will need to take care of the ball and make the most of their scoring chances against Creighton. This means moving the ball well, finding open looks, and knocking down shots when they present themselves. The Musketeers will also need to capitalize on fast break opportunities and convert at the free throw line.
    3. Control the tempo: Creighton likes to play fast and score in transition, so Xavier will need to dictate the pace of the game and limit the Bluejays’ fast break opportunities. This means executing in the half-court offense, taking care of the basketball, and not allowing Creighton to get out in transition. By controlling the tempo of the game, Xavier can disrupt Creighton’s rhythm and give themselves a better chance to come out on top in Omaha.

  • Keys to the Game and Scouting Look: No. 13 Texas A&M

Keys to the Game and Scouting Look: No. 13 Texas A&M

On Saturday night, the Sooners secured a 65-62 SEC road win in Fayetteville against Arkansas, improving to 15-4 (2-4). Oklahoma shot the lights out in the first half, knocking down seven three-pointers, before facing struggles offensively in the second half. Ultimately, Porter Moser’s squad made a clutch defensive stop, leading to a dunk by Jalon Moore—who played 37 minutes—sealing the win for the Sooners.

On Tuesday night at 8:00 pm (SEC Network), Oklahoma continues its road trip, facing No. 13 Texas A&M (15-5, 4-3). The Aggies are coming off a 70-69 loss at Texas, setting the stage for the second matchup between the Sooners and the Aggies.

Here’s a breakdown of what Buzz Williams’ fully healthy squad (unlike last time) will bring to the table as Oklahoma travels to College Station and what they need to do to pull off the upset while playing with house money:

    Scouting Texas A&M

Oklahoma already faced Texas A&M once on January 8th, where the Sooners led by 18 in the second half before a collapse and a late explosion by Zhuric Phelps ultimately resulted in an 80-78 loss. Brycen Goodine put up a legacy performance with 34 points, including nine three-pointers, but it wasn’t enough to seal the win.

While the Sooners have already played the Aggies, they have not yet seen star guard Wade Taylor, who had been sidelined with an injury. Before the injury, Taylor averaged 15.7 points, 4.8 assists, and 3.3 rebounds. He’s since returned for four SEC games, averaging 11 points.

Taylor’s return gives Texas A&M an added dimension that Oklahoma didn’t have to contend with last time. After their first meeting, Phelps surged with 24 and 21-point performances but has since cooled off, averaging just 11.3 points in his last three games, including 7 points in their loss to Texas. In that game, it was Taylor (15 points, 5-8 3PT) and Obaseki (13 points) who carried the Aggies’ offense.

One thing that hasn’t changed in the nearly four weeks since these teams last met is that the Aggies remain the number one offensive rebounding team in the country, boasting an offensive rebound percentage of 42.7%.

Here’s where the Aggies rank in various key stats, including their dominant offensive rebounding, impressive defense, and more:

    Texas A&M Scouting Report

    Keys to the Game

Make them beat you from behind the arc

A lot will have to go right for Oklahoma to walk out of College Station victorious on Tuesday night. If you’re Oklahoma, you have to make Texas A&M beat you from deep.

In the first matchup, the Aggies went 9-23 (39.1%) from beyond the arc, with six of those nine three-pointers coming from Phelps, a career 26.8% shooter from deep. As a team, Texas A&M ranks 278th in the country in three-point shooting percentage, struggling from long range overall. When Kentucky faced them, the Aggies shot just 7-30 (23.3%) from deep in an 81-69 loss.

Texas A&M found their rhythm against Texas on Saturday, hitting 12-23 (52.5%) from deep, led by Wade Taylor, who went 5-8. Given that the Aggies are not a great shooting team and also struggle defensively against the three (ranking 13th in the SEC), if they manage to beat you from beyond the arc, you’ve just got to live with it.

A big performance from the Moore and Fears duo

The Sooners will need Moore and Jeremiah Fears firing on all cylinders. This is very attainable, as both have been playing some of their best basketball lately.

Fears is coming off arguably his best game in conference play, posting 16 points, five rebounds, and three assists with just two turnovers. After a stretch where he committed 4+ turnovers in three straight games, he’s now cleaned it up, committing only two turnovers in the past two games despite playing an average of 32.5 minutes per game.

Meanwhile, Moore continues to be a steady contributor. He logged 37 minutes on Saturday, finishing with 13 points and six rebounds on 6-14 shooting from the field. Prior to that, Moore had a 22-point performance against South Carolina and a 29-point outing against Texas.

If they can replicate the form they showed in the Arizona game — where Fears and Moore combined for 26 and 24 points, respectively — the Sooners could have a real shot at pulling off an upset.

    Continued three-point success

Texas A&M is well aware of what Oklahoma, albeit inconsistently, is capable of—more specifically, what Goodine can do. In the first matchup between the two teams, the Sooners shot an impressive 14-24 (58.3%) from three-point range. Goodine, who led the charge with nine made threes in that game, is coming off of an Arkansas game where he hit three three-pointers in the first half.

Oklahoma’s three-point shooting has remained a strength in recent games, with the Sooners hitting 8-17 (47.1%) from deep in their win over South Carolina. In the first half against Arkansas, they connected on 7-16 (43.8%) from beyond the arc. If they can maintain this shooting form on the road against Texas A&M, it will give them a real shot at pulling off an upset.

For the Sooners, it all starts with Goodine, who has been a consistent threat from three, especially in big moments. However, it’s not just Goodine who can make an impact from deep. Luke Northweather, who played 13 minutes against Arkansas — four fewer than Sam Godwin and two more than Mohamed Wague — could also find success from beyond the arc. The Sooners will need every bit of perimeter shooting to keep the pressure on Texas A&M and potentially pull off the upset.

    Keys to the Game:

    1. Limit Turnovers: Texas A&M has a strong defense that can capitalize on mistakes. The key for success will be to take care of the ball and make smart decisions on offense.

    2. Control the Paint: Texas A&M excels at scoring inside and crashing the boards. The team will need to play tough defense in the paint and limit second-chance opportunities for the Aggies.

    3. Fast Start: Getting off to a quick start and setting the tone early will be crucial for the team. Establishing a lead and maintaining momentum will be key in this matchup.

Scouting Look: No. 13 Texas A&M

Texas A&M boasts a balanced offensive attack led by forward Emanuel Miller, who averages 17.4 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. The team’s defense is also a force to be reckoned with, holding opponents to just 63.4 points per game.

The Aggies are coming off a big win against a ranked opponent and will be looking to continue their momentum against our team. It will be important to match their intensity and execute on both ends of the floor to come out on top in this matchup.

  • Johni Broome’s return keys No. 1 Auburn past No. 6 Tennessee

Miles Kelly hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 30 seconds remaining and Johni Broome had 16 points and 13 rebounds in his return to the lineup as No. 1 Auburn extended its winning streak to 11 games by outlasting No. 6 Tennessee 53-51 on Saturday night.

Auburn (18-1, 6-0 SEC) was held to its lowest point total of the season by Tennessee’s physical defense. Kelly’s trey off a feed from Broome turned a two-point deficit into a one-point advantage.

Tennessee had a chance to retake the lead in the final seconds, but a 3-point try by Zakai Zeigler missed the mark.

Broome, a 6-foot-10, 240-pound fifth-year senior and preseason Associated Press All-American, was back in action for the first time since suffering what Tigers coach Bruce Pearl called a “significant sprain” to his left ankle during a win at South Carolina on Jan. 11. The forward secured crucial defensive rebounds on Tennessee’s final two possessions.

“I just want to thank my trainers and my doctors and Johni Broome for living in the training room for two weeks. I didn’t think he was going to come back tonight, in the middle of the week. And even here the day before, I knew he wanted to go,” Pearl said after the victory. “I didn’t think he was going to be effective. And he had a triple-double tonight: 16 points, 13 rebounds — and he missed 12 shots.

“But I think the team really respected their leader for putting it on the line, and I don’t know if we win if he doesn’t come back.”

Tennessee coach Rick Barnes didn’t take any chances. He had his Volunteers prepared to see Broome, although, in the end, that didn’t stop him.

“There was no doubt in our mind [Broome] was going to play,” Barnes said. “We knew he was going to play. So we prepared all week for him to be there.”

Zeigler had 14 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists to lead the Volunteers (17-3, 4-3). Chaz Lanier added 10 points, including a pair of clutch 3-pointers in the second half.

Both teams shot less than 32% from the field in the defensive slugfest.

“The last thing is that we’ve won four games now in the last possession — four of the last six,” Pearl said. “Last year, we had 20 wins by double digits. And so, whether this team is better or not or whatever we are, this league is better. And so, it’s going be a battle every night. But we are happy with this one, because that’s a great team.”

Auburn will play at LSU on Wednesday. Tennessee will look to bounce back when it hosts No. 9 Kentucky on Tuesday.

“I thought they fought all night long,” Barnes said of his Volunteers. “And we went through just a couple minutes where we didn’t quite stick to the details and gave them a few baskets that we wouldn’t want to give them.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

In a highly anticipated matchup between No. 1 Auburn and No. 6 Tennessee, Johni Broome’s return proved to be the difference maker as the Tigers secured a crucial victory.

Broome, who had been sidelined with an injury for the past few games, made a triumphant return to the court and immediately made his presence felt. The talented forward dominated the paint, finishing with a double-double and showcasing his ability to score and defend at a high level.

Broome’s impact was evident throughout the game, as he provided a much-needed spark for Auburn on both ends of the floor. His tenacity and energy lifted his teammates and helped them secure a hard-fought win against a tough Tennessee squad.

With Broome back in the lineup, Auburn looks to be a formidable force as they continue their quest for a national championship. His return has undoubtedly solidified the Tigers’ status as one of the top teams in the country, and his performance against Tennessee serves as a reminder of his importance to the team’s success.

As Auburn looks ahead to the rest of the season, Broome’s return will undoubtedly be a key factor in their pursuit of greatness. With his talent and determination, the Tigers are poised to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament and compete for a title.
