    Notre Dame kick returner Jayden Harrison took the opening kickoff of the second half back 98 yards to cap off an unbelievable stretch of 17 points in 54 seconds against 2-seed Georgia in the Sugar Bowl College Football Playoff quarterfinal on Thursday. The return gave the Fighting Irish a commanding 20-3 lead in the third quarter, though Georgia pulled it to 20-10 after a touchdown shortly after. 

    After catching the kickoff, Harrison, a former All-American kick returner, maneuvered around a mess of five Georgia defenders and broke it outside with plenty of daylight. Kicker Peyton Woodring had one last crack at Harrison, but he outran him down the sideline to reach the end zone flanked by plenty of extra blockers. 

    Notre Dame and Georgia were scoreless at the end of the first quarter, marking the first time since 2018 that a CFP game went a full quarter without points. With 39 seconds remaining in the half, the score was only 3-3. However, the Irish went on a massive run from there. 

    Kicker Mitch Jeter connected on a 48-yarder with 39 seconds remaining to take their first lead. One play later, RJ Oben forced a fumble on a sack of Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton which was recovered by Junior Tuihalamaka. Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard hit Beaux Collins for a 13-yard touchdown only 11 seconds after the field goal. Harrison capped it off with the 98-yard return 

    Granted, Georgia has now trailed its last three games at halftime. The Bulldogs came back to beat both Georgia Tech and Texas. Kirby Smart’s squad has won seven straight postseason games dating back to the 2018 Sugar Bowl against Texas, including four consecutive wins in the College Football Playoff. Smart’s only CFP loss came in the 2017 CFP National Championship against mentor Nick Saban and Alabama.

    Fast forward a year to 2015 and the strawweight decided to take a break from fighting following a submission loss to Rose Namajunas in her first main event.

    Paige VanZant scores a stunning KO over Bec Rawlings in her comeback

    ’12 Gauge’ decided to take an eight-month hiatus which saw her compete in reality TV show, Dancing with the Stars.

    The then-UFC star finished the competition as the runner-up and shortly after, she opted to make her return to the promotion.

    The UFC matched her up with Bec Rawlings who had a mediocre start to her UFC career following her stint on The Ultimate Fighter.

    VanZant came out in round one of her meeting with Rawlings extremely tentative, and ‘Rowdy’ dominated for the majority of the first five minutes.

    Despite that, in the interval between rounds, VanZant was implored by her corner team to focus on simple strikes so that she could work her way into the fight.

    However, just 17 seconds into round two, the star strawweight landed a hellacious jumping switch kick, connecting flush on the chin of Rawlings and sending her sinking into the canvas.

    Although even prior to the fight there was a lot of hype surrounding VanZant, her win over Rawlings only intensified that and grew her starpower.

    Will Paige VanZant ever return to the UFC and what is next for her?

    Unfortunately, ’12 Gauge’ struggled to ever live up to the hype surrounding her and she exited the UFC in 202 after picking up her fourth loss in the promotion.

    Since her exit from the promotion, the 30-year-old has competed in several different avenues of combat sports. VanZant took her talents to the Bare-Knuckle Boxing ring before Conor McGregor became a co-owner of BKFC but unfortunately lost on both occasions.

    The striker has also competed in Misfits Boxing against influencer boxer, Elle Brooke and the two fought to a split draw.

    Since then, VanZant has gotten closer to a return to the UFC as she has competed twice under Dana White’s Power Slap banner.

    In her debut outing in Power Slap, she picked up the unanimous decision win and admitted how much she enjoyed competing in the sport. She then went on to face the wife of UFC legend, John Dodson, Chelsea Dodson but they couldn’t be separated on the scorecards.

    Although the former UFC star doesn’t currently have a combat sports outing booked, she has recently teased on her Instagram that she has fight news coming soon.

    Holiday Bowl financial boom about to kick off for San Diego – NBC 7 San Diego


    The Holiday Bowl is iconic to San Diego, not just for the football game but what it does for the San Diego economy.

    Washington State and Syracuse will play in the Holiday Bowl Friday at Snapdragon Stadium, the first time the Mission Valley site has hosted the game.

    Since 1978, in its 45 years of existence, the Holiday Bowl has generated more than $1 billion of economic impact in San Diego.

    “That’s why we do this,” Mark Neville, Holiday Bowl CEO told NBC 7 Thursday morning. “This is to drive economic benefits for San Diego.”

    On average, the Holiday Bowl annually pumps between $15-20 million into the local economy, with visitors all over San Diego during what is traditionally one of the slowest times of the year for tourism.

    “When people come to San Diego for the game, of course, they’re coming for the football game, but once they’re here, there’s not a better bowl destination in the country, period,” Neville said. “There’s nowhere else in the country where you can do as many things and see as many beautiful sights,” adding, “and there will be millions of eyeballs watching this game and seeing San Diego.”

    As for the game, the scars are still healing from 2021 when UCLA, citing COVID issues, bailed hours before kickoff, causing the Holiday Bowl to be canceled.  This year there was talk of Washington State not playing in the game due to their head coach leaving for a new job, many assistant coaches leaving the team and more than 25 players entering the transfer portal, but last week the Cougars reaffirmed their commitment to the Holiday Bowl and their head coach left no doubt at Thursday’s Holiday Bowl press conference.

    “You make changes’ and you put young men in there that got heart and are going to fight,” said Pete Kaligis, interim Washington State head coach.”That’s going to be the whole message tonight and tomorrow….It’s your time to shine. It really is.”
