  • Skills competition kicks off Pro Bowl Games

Unlike some notable quarterbacks who passed on participating in the Pro Bowl Games because of injury or other reasons, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow will make his first Pro Bowl appearance Thursday night in the skills competition in Orlando, Florida.

The NFL leader in passing yards this season had been voted in twice before but declined, reflecting one of the problems Pro Bowl Games organizers face each year. Star quarterbacks have been especially difficult to convince to show up. The Baltimore RavensLamar Jackson and Buffalo BillsJosh Allen (hand injury) will not participate this year after deep playoff runs. The Houston TexansC.J. Stroud declined to fill in as an alternate, and the Denver BroncosBo Nix reportedly passed because of a back injury.

The AFC quarterbacks other than Burrow are the New England PatriotsDrake Maye (replacing Jackson) and the Pittsburgh SteelersRussell Wilson (replacing Allen). The NFC quarterbacks are the Minnesota VikingsSam Darnold, the Detroit LionsJared Goff and the Tampa Bay BuccaneersBaker Mayfield (replacing the Washington CommandersJayden Daniels).

Former five-time Pro Bowler J.J. Watt, who retired after the 2022 season, posted Tuesday on X: “When you get 5 alternates deep, just call it the Participation Bowl.”

But as the NFL embarks on the third year of the Pro Bowl Games — the revamped, flag-football-centric format — its future appears more certain than it’s been in years, with fan — and player — interest remaining high and stable, according to the NFL.

The skills show begins at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN, while the flag game is at 3 p.m. ET on Sunday on ESPN, ABC and ESPN+.

“There may have been people who were at one point skeptical, [asking] could you fill a stadium for a flag-football game?” said Peter O’Reilly, NFL executive vice president of club business, international and league events. “This is different.”

Since the flag format’s inception in 2023, attendance has averaged 57,020.

O’Reilly emphasized the focus on entertainment and personality in the current format, with players no longer donning helmets and playing to the crowd.

The 2023 event in Las Vegas got Orlando officials interested in hosting the game again as they had four previous times in the tackle format. The region’s tourism officials decided to make bidding on the game a priority for 2024. Now, they’re hosting it for a second straight year.

“We walked in and saw that crowd that was there in Allegiant [Stadium] and said, ‘This works,’” said Steve Hogan, CEO of Citrus Sports, an organization that promotes sports tourism in the area. “So, the next year, we had it back here and the energy in the stadium was awesome. It was constant programming. There were kids and families everywhere. There’s always an activity. Constant stimulation.

    “I couldn’t have been happier.”

Casandra Matej, CEO of Visit Orlando, characterized the Pro Bowl’s local impact as critical.

“We’re home to a lot of major events, major conventions and major visitation being the No. 1 visited leisure destination in the U.S.,” she said. “But these are all important, and it really helps our economy. Looking at some of the stats, [the Pro Bowl] is right around a $45 million of economic impact for our community.”

Television ratings have dipped in recent years — a reality all-star events are facing across all pro sports — but league officials are happy with viewership numbers. With 5.8 million viewers last year, the Pro Bowl Games nearly tripled the average ratings for the 2024 Stanley Cup Finals (2.1 million).

One thing that has bolstered the NFL’s long-term confidence is the feedback it has received from players. The league annually surveys players after participating in the Pro Bowl, and the number of them expressing satisfaction in the experience has increased sharply, O’Reilly said.

“Their feedback compared to in the tackle format rose massively when we went to this format,” he said. “And then it rose again last year. That’s in the mid- to high-90s in terms of satisfaction with the events.”

That might be leading to better turnout among players.

O’Reilly believed this year’s Pro Bowl was on track to set a record for the fewest replacement players since the league began tracking that information, but the situation is always fluid. The upcoming Super Bowl always deals a blow to the Pro Bowl roster, with a combined 11 players from the Chiefs and Eagles unavailable to participate.

Hesitation in past years about injury risk while playing tackle football ultimately hurt the product in two ways. Some players were obviously reluctant to play because they might sustain an injury. But even for those who did play, the level of competition left a lot to be desired because players did not want to engage in too much physicality.

Playing flag, however, has allowed players to be much more competitive and has made the event relatable to a generation of kids who are playing flag at unprecedented rates — a major priority for the NFL heading into the 2028 Olympic Games, which will feature flag football for the first time.

“We came together with the players, made the determination to move away from the tackle football game and create something that really accomplished a number of things,” O’Reilly said. “And at the core of this is celebrating some of the best players in the NFL, doing that in a way that works for them and has the right feel to it and is fun.”

The Skills competition at the Pro Bowl Games is back and better than ever! This exciting event showcases the incredible talents of some of the best players in the NFL, as they compete in a variety of challenges to prove who is truly the most skilled player on the field.

From precision passing to catching to kicking, the Skills competition has something for everyone to enjoy. Fans can watch in awe as their favorite players showcase their abilities in a fun and competitive atmosphere.

Not only is the Skills competition a thrilling event for fans to watch, but it also allows players to showcase their talents in a different light and have some fun before the big game. It’s a chance for players to show off their skills and have a good time with their fellow competitors.

So don’t miss out on the excitement of the Skills competition at the Pro Bowl Games. Tune in to see some of the best players in the NFL compete in a variety of challenges to prove who truly has the skills to pay the bills.

  • Sundance 2025 Kicks Off With Cynthia Erivo, Jon Hamm and Abby Wambach

“Our family, we have a word we say when we are in the middle of being scared and excited — it’s scited,” said Abby Wambach, the two-time Olympic gold medal winning soccer player. “That’s me right now: scited.”

It was Friday night, the first full day of the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, and celebrities and filmmakers were packed into a luxury hotel ballroom in sweaters and snow boots for a gala, which raised $1.5 million for the Sundance Institute, the nonprofit founded by the actor Robert Redford that supports independent artists.

The 450-person event took place in the vast ballroom of the Grand Hyatt Deer Valley, a new hotel at one of the bases of the Deer Valley ski resort, where lift tickets cost about $300 a day and snowboarding is still prohibited.

The Sundance Institute proceeded with the festival amid wildfires in Southern California, which have affected many in the entertainment industry and beyond, to bring its community together, organizers said.

“What gets us through, and moving forward, is the art form and the ability to tell these stories,” said Ebs Burnough, the chair of the board of trustees for the Sundance Institute, when asked if he felt uncomfortable about holding the festival this year.

“Not every story is light and easy, but we have to tell them,” he said. “This is what storytellers do.”

The Sundance Film Festival, held nearby in Park City for more than 40 years, is credited with catapulting the careers of once-unknown talent, including Quentin Tarantino, Kristen Stewart and Christopher Nolan, and is now full of recognizable faces presenting big new projects while clomping in the snow and networking on Main Street.

Ms. Wambach was in Utah for the premiere of “Come See Me in the Good Light,” a documentary directed by Ryan White about two lovers who explore love and morality after receiving an incurable diagnosis. Ms. Wambach and her wife, the author Glennon Doyle, are executive producers on the film.

“It’s my first Sundance, and it’s my first time being part of a film,” Ms. Wambach said. “This is so exciting to be a rookie.”

The actor Jon Hamm, who was starring in “The Big Fix” a new audio drama from Audible about corruption in 1950s Los Angeles, was surrounded by gala attendees shaking his hand and asking for photos.

He said he had difficulty recognizing people covered in winter gear.

“Everybody isn’t in tuxedos here,” he said. “It’s like, ‘Do I know you?’ They have hats on, so I can’t tell.”

Cynthia Erivo, who was wearing a wrap dress and big, clunky silver earrings, arrived encircled by an entourage. She had just been nominated for an Oscar for best actress for her role in “Wicked,” and was coming off a whirlwind day of media appointments and events.

“We all love coming to Sundance because there are more indie, more off-the-wall ideas,” she said. “There is no pretense. You don’t have to dress up too much if you don’t want to. You just get to be cozy and see really good films.”

The festival, which opened just days after Donald J. Trump was inaugurated for a second term, has a slate this year infused with politics.

The actress Glenn Close was on the Sundance board for nearly 20 years and was thinking about current events. (She also played JD Vance’s mother in “Hillbilly Elegy,” the 2020 film based on the vice president’s memoirs.)

“There is so much discord and darkness in the world,” she said. “We have to be reminded of what it means to be human beings. Art has the ability to inspire, and we need that.”

She was at the gala to give a tribute to her friend Michelle Satter, the founding senior director of artist programs at Sundance Institute.

Around 8 p.m., guests sat down for a dinner of bronzed salmon and speeches reflecting on the impact of the Sundance Institute.

The actress Olivia Colman, whose film “Jimpa,” about a mother taking a nonbinary teen to visit their gay grandfather, premiered Thursday at a packed Eccles Theatre, took the stage to give Ms. Erivo the Visionary Award.

Ms. Colman, wearing face glitter and a costume tiara, lauded Ms. Erivo, “as a human, and as an actor, or as a singer, or activist, and ally, and a fashion icon, and as a frankly mind-bending practitioner of a whole load of gym exercises I can’t even name.”

Ms. Erivo walked on stage to a round of applause before putting the tiara on her own head. “It can’t be left here,” she said. “It must be worn.”

Throughout the program, audience members speculated on the festival’s future following the announcement by organizers about plans to move to a new location in 2027, which could include Cincinnati, Boulder, Colo., or Salt Lake City, with ancillary screenings in Park City.

“There is tons of traffic, it’s really hard to get around, it’s really hard to get housing, it’s expensive,” explained Amanda Kelso, the chief executive of the Sundance Institute.

“We love Park City, we love the community, but we also acknowledge that we need to think, ‘How are we going to be sustainable for the next 40 years?” Ms. Kelso said.

Mr. Hamm said if the festival moved it should adopt a new name: “I think that’s the only fair way to honor this and honor what the new thing will be.”

But if Cincinnati is selected, he joked, “we can water ski on the river.”

Sundance 2025 is officially underway, and this year’s festival has kicked off with a star-studded lineup of guests. Among the notable names in attendance are actress Cynthia Erivo, actor Jon Hamm, and retired soccer player Abby Wambach.

Erivo, known for her powerful performances in films like “Harriet” and “Widows,” is sure to bring her signature talent and charisma to the festival. Hamm, best known for his role as Don Draper in the hit TV series “Mad Men,” is also a fan favorite at Sundance. And Wambach, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and FIFA Women’s World Cup champion, brings her unique perspective as a former athlete turned activist.

With such a diverse and talented group of individuals in attendance, Sundance 2025 promises to be a memorable and thought-provoking experience for all who attend. Stay tuned for more updates and highlights from the festival!

The streets of San Francisco were filled with vibrant colors, lively music, and joyful celebrations as the annual Chinese New Year Parade and Festival officially kicked off this weekend. This year, the parade had two special Grand Marshals leading the festivities – acclaimed actress Joan Chen and beloved TV personality Carrie Ann Inaba.

Joan Chen, known for her roles in iconic films like “The Last Emperor” and “Twin Peaks,” was thrilled to be a part of the celebration. “I am honored to be a part of this rich cultural tradition and to celebrate the Year of the Tiger with the vibrant community here in San Francisco,” Chen said.

Carrie Ann Inaba, best known for her role as a judge on “Dancing with the Stars,” was equally excited to be a part of the festivities. “I have always loved the energy and excitement of the Chinese New Year Parade, and I am thrilled to be a part of it this year as a Grand Marshal,” Inaba said.

The parade featured colorful floats, traditional lion dances, martial arts demonstrations, and performances by local dance troupes and musicians. Thousands of spectators lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the elaborate costumes and dazzling displays.

The Chinese New Year Parade and Festival is one of the largest celebrations of its kind outside of Asia, and it is a beloved tradition in San Francisco. The festivities will continue throughout the month, with cultural performances, food vendors, and family-friendly activities planned.
