I Streamed A Real Pain On Hulu, But There’s One Aspect Of Kieran Culkin’s Outstanding Performance That’s Bothering Me

We’re currently in the midst of awards season, where some of the best movie projects from the last year are recognized in a variety of upcoming awards shows. One title that’s been getting plenty of nods is Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain, which is streaming currently with a Hulu subscription. I finally streamed it myself, but there’s one aspect of Kieran Culkin’s outstanding performance that’s bothering me.
Following Culkin’s recent Golden Globe win, there are way more folks figuring out how to stream A Real Pain. The hype around the project reached a fever pitch thanks to the 2025 Oscar nominations, where Eisenberg’s screenplay and Culkin’s performance were honored. But I’m a little annoyed that the Succession alum is up for the Supporting Actor categories when he’s the protagonist of the film, in my opinion.
A Real Pain focuses on two cousins going on a trip through Poland to honor their late grandmother. Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin share basically every scene together and have outstanding chemistry as estranged relatives struggling with trauma and grief. But the idea that Culkin’s Benji is the “supporting” character is pretty laughable; the movie literally begins and ends with him in the airport.
While Jesse Eisenberg’s David is perhaps the “everyman” and the audience’s entry point into the story, Benji is the heart of A Real Pain. Watching his layers of trauma and emotionality unfold throughout the film’s 90-minute runtime is deeply moving, especially his devastated reaction to visiting a former Nazi concentration camp.

This performance feelings like a stellar follow-up to Kieran Culkin’s Emmy-winning work on Succession (which is streaming with a Max subscription). And funny enough, he’ll be competing against his former co-star Jeremy Strong in the Best Supporting Actor category for this year’s Oscars. In a strange way it feels like a the multiverse at play with the Roy sons, who so often quarreled throughout the show’s runtime.
Culkin’s work as Benji was one of the most impactful film performances I’ve seen in a while, and that includes all the awards favorites that I’ve been catching up on. He pivots between being wildly charming and chewing on the scenery to breaking the hearts of other characters and the audience alike. He’s able to weave in the history with Benji’s late grandmother, his suicide attempt and the atrocities of the Holocaust, as well as his stained relationship to Eisenberg’s character into one powerhouse performance.
All of this say that Culkin doesn’t feel like a supporting actor in A Real Pain in the least bit. Obviously studios are being strategic in trying to get the most Oscar attention as possible, and that been working for the 42 year-old actor. We’ll just have to see if he takes home an Academy Award to go with his Golden Globe.

I recently streamed the new series A Real Pain on Hulu, and I have to say, Kieran Culkin’s performance was absolutely outstanding. Culkin’s portrayal of the troubled and complex character had me captivated from start to finish. However, there’s one aspect of his performance that’s been bothering me.While Culkin’s acting was undeniably brilliant, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of unease about the way he portrayed certain scenes. In particular, his character’s treatment of others and his lack of empathy towards those around him left me feeling unsettled. It’s clear that Culkin fully committed to the role, but I can’t shake the feeling that his character’s behavior may have crossed a line.
As much as I admire Culkin’s talent as an actor, I can’t help but wonder if his performance went too far in certain moments. While I understand that this is just a fictional portrayal, I can’t help but feel that there are real-life implications to consider when depicting such troubling behavior on screen.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed watching A Real Pain and Kieran Culkin’s performance was truly remarkable. However, I think it’s important to acknowledge and discuss the potentially problematic aspects of his character’s actions. It’s a fine line to walk as an actor, and I hope that Culkin and the creators of the show will continue to explore these complex themes in a thoughtful and responsible manner.

A Succession Showdown Between Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong in Oscar Best Supporting Actor Category
The Best Supporting Actor category at the 97th annual Academy Awards features a duel between two former Succession co-stars: Jeremy Strong for his role in The Apprentice, and Kieran Culkin for his role in A Real Pain.
The pair played two brothers — and potential successors to a media empire — in the HBO series that wrapped in 2023 after four seasons. Their category also includes Yuri Borisov for Anora, Edward Norton for A Complete Unknown, and Guy Pearce in The Brutalist.
Culkin has widely been seen as a frontrunner because of his role as the more troubled half of a pair of cousins who go on a Holocaust memorial tour in A Real Pain, opposite writer-director Jesse Eisenberg.
Strong plays Roy Cohn in The Apprentice, which details the early relationship between the closeted, scheming lawyer and Donald Trump (Sebastian Stan).

Culkin and Strong have appeared to tweak each other during award season interviews. During a Variety “Actors on Actors conversation, Culkin called out actors who call themselves “storytellers,” citing Strong specifically.
“I object to when actors call themselves ‘storytellers,’” Culkin said last month. “I don’t really like that.”
He added, “Sorry, Jeremy. I don’t think I’m telling the story.”

Strong has also been questioned by Succession star Brian Cox for his extreme on-set commitment during the HBO series. Cox once called Strong’s method acting “f—ing annoying” in an interview with Town & Country. He later clarified in an interview with The Guardian: “He was wonderful to act with. I had no argument with Jeremy’s acting. … He would be an even better actor if he just got rid of that so there would be much more inclusiveness in what he did.”
Strong appeared to respond to Culkin, though not by name, in an interview with Deadline earlier this month.
“Lately, people have felt a need to take shots at me or say disparaging things, which I don’t really think there’s any need for,” Strong said. “The way I approach things, my process. I feel we’re storytellers. … Those are actors telling story through character, which to me is the highest bar. That’s the holy grail for me, creating a character, which is sort of creating an instrument that’s never existed before… That’s the kind of acting that I love. And it does require a kind of, I don’t know, devil may care attitude towards what anybody might think of what you’re doing.”

Dark horses Jeremy Strong of The Apprentice and Yura Borisov of Anora are still well within the conversation. Culkin, however, is arguably the only projected Supporting Actor nominee who feels irreplaceable in his film, which is why he should win for A Real Pain.
A Real Pain explores themes of identity and loss as two estranged families confront their shared and tumultuous pasts. Through intertwining narratives, the film delves into the complexities of familial relationships and the enduring impact of unresolved grief.

Kieran Culkin claims responsibility for getting Mark Ruffalo high
In a new interview with The Guardian, Kieran Culkin makes a point of saying that he doesn’t do drugs and never has—with one pretty major exception. In 2000, Culkin performed in The Moment When, an off-Broadway play written by James Lapine. There was apparently a prop spliff in one scene, which Culkin swapped with actual marijuana and didn’t tell anyone. This led to the “entire cast” getting stoned on stage, on the night that critics happened to view the production.
“I was 17 and stupid,” Culkin tells The Guardian. Apparently, there was a bag of prop joints, and the young actor had only swapped out one for the real thing, creating a sort of Russian roulette situation. But instead of brains splattered on the wall behind him, it was the unmistakable smell of reefer that was the tell that the game had ended. Culkin recalls thinking “Uh-oh. I believe it’s happened,” as he watched (and smelled) Mark Ruffalo smoking on stage.
At intermission, though, everyone seemed pretty chill about it. (Perhaps they would have been pretty chill about anything in the moment.) “I’m like, ‘I thought this was a good prank. I’m stupid. Oh my God, I’m so sorry.’ But actually, they loved it,” Culkin recalls. “Mark says, ‘I haven’t smoked pot in 10 years; the second half’s going to be so much fun.’ There was this other actor who had never smoked pot in her life. She goes, ‘Is this what being high is? This is lovely.’ And then Phyllis Newman comes in and goes, ‘I haven’t smoked pot since the 1960s. Thank you, darling.’” Everyone except the (presumably sober) stage manager, that is. “Then the stage manager comes stomping in and goes, ‘I don’t care whose it is, or what happened, but Kieran, give me the joint,” he says. “I sheepishly handed her the roach and she said, ‘Ruin your life on your own time.’”
Funnily enough, Ruffalo has told this story before, back on an appearance on The Graham Norton Show in 2012. Either because he’s a gentleman, or maybe because Culkin wasn’t Succession-level famous yet, Ruffalo didn’t name Culkin as the culprit and just referred to a “naughty young actor.” Regardless, he had a pretty good sense of humor about it then, too. “The girl that I was passing it to had never smoked pot in her life,” he recalled. “I had, up to that point, smoked a lot of pot.”
Years later Culkin did This Is Our Youth with Colin Hanks, and joked he would do the same thing to him. Hanks threatened to punch him in the face. But later in the run, he warmed to the idea, and when Culkin did in fact swap the fake weed with the real thing, Hanks apparently got so nervous he couldn’t even roll the joint. Aw! And thus ends Kieran Culkin’s experimentation with drugs.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, actor Kieran Culkin made a shocking confession: he claims responsibility for getting fellow actor Mark Ruffalo high. Culkin, best known for his role in the hit TV series “Succession,” revealed that the two actors were hanging out at a party a few years ago when he offered Ruffalo some of his personal stash.“I don’t usually do this, but I had some really good stuff on me that night and I thought, ‘why not share it with Mark?’” Culkin said in the interview. “I didn’t expect him to go all in, but he did and he had a great time.”
Ruffalo, known for his roles in films like “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has not publicly commented on Culkin’s claims. However, Culkin insists that the experience brought them closer together and that they have remained friends ever since.
