  • 100,000 Ducks to Be Killed After Bird Flu Strikes Long Island Farm

Long Island duck is a delicacy savored across the country for its mild flavor and tender meat. But its future has been cast into doubt after the last duck farm on the island was quarantined for an outbreak of bird flu.

The farm, Crescent Duck Farm in Aquebogue, N.Y., must now kill its entire flock of almost 100,000 ducks and may go out of business, its owner said in an interview. The highly infectious virus, H5NI avian flu, was detected last week.

The Suffolk County Health Department said that the farm was under quarantine and that state and federal agriculture officials were on site to conduct “depopulating, cleaning and disinfection activities” at the facility, which supplies ducks to many restaurants in New York City and elsewhere. Similar outbreaks have led to the culling of herds and flocks in more than a dozen states.

Doug Corwin, who is part of the fourth generation of his family to operate Crescent Duck Farm, which has been open since 1908, said on Thursday that the future of his business was uncertain.

“I have done this all my life, and we are the last of this industry,” he said. “It is gut-wrenching. You work your whole life for something, and then one day everything is gone.”

Health officials said the risk to humans remained low. “The virus at this point is not transmissible among humans,” Dr. Gregson Pigott, the Suffolk County health commissioner, said in a statement.

But he said that transmission could be possible between infected birds and farm workers who had been exposed to them, and an investigation was underway.

There have been 67 confirmed human cases of H5N1 in the United States since last year and one confirmed death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The outbreak has caused growing concern across the country and led California to declare a state of emergency last month over outbreaks that affected hundreds of cattle herds.

Health officials did not publicly identify Mr. Corwin’s farm as the site of the outbreak, news of which was previously reported by RiverheadLocal, a Suffolk County news site.

Duck farming was once a pillar of the economy on Long Island, especially in the more rural eastern stretches of Suffolk.

In 1940, there were 90 duck farms in the towns of Brookhaven, Southampton and Riverhead, according to a historical study published by the Suffolk County Department of Planning. But today there is only Crescent.

The process of culling the birds, disinfecting the facility and lifting the quarantine on the farm could take two to three months, Mr. Corwin said.

He added that the one “glimmer of hope we have, that hopefully keeps us going,” is that the government agreed not to destroy several thousand eggs, which might enable him to revive his flock in the future.

But he had not decided whether to take that route.

“I am not 100 percent certain I want to go through that unless the U.S.D.A. approves a vaccine for this virus,” he said. “I don’t want to go through all of this again.”

A local hatchery has agreed to try to hatch the eggs, which may allow the farm to keep its genetic strain of delicious ducks, with an optimal meat-to-fat ratio, alive long enough to restart the business.

The farm produces 3.5 percent of all the ducks sold in the United States. It supplies restaurants in a number of cities, including New York, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Boston.

“The reason I am in still in business is my genetics, and if I can’t preserve my genetics, then I am worthless as far as duck farming goes,” Mr. Corwin said. “My customers are people who use multiple ducks a night — chefs who use duck after duck after duck.”

The outbreak has forced Mr. Corwin to lay off at least 45 of his roughly 75 employees. He said he was still shocked that his flock had become infected.

“This has spread like wildfire here,” said Mr. Corwin. “I am 66. My great-grandfather started this business. I have seen a lot of things in my years, but I haven’t seen anything like this.”

Recently, a devastating outbreak of bird flu has struck a farm on Long Island, leading to the tragic decision to cull 100,000 ducks in an effort to contain the disease. This heartbreaking news has sent shockwaves through the community and raised concerns about the impact of the outbreak on both the local economy and the welfare of the animals involved.

The farm, located in Suffolk County, has been placed under quarantine as authorities work to prevent the spread of the virus to other farms in the area. The decision to cull such a large number of ducks was made in order to protect public health and prevent further outbreaks of the virus.

The owners of the farm have expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their animals, many of whom were beloved members of their flock. They have vowed to take all necessary precautions to prevent future outbreaks and ensure the safety of their remaining animals.

As the community mourns the loss of these ducks, it serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact that outbreaks of infectious diseases can have on both animals and humans. It is a somber moment for all involved, and our thoughts are with the farmers and their animals during this difficult time.

  • Antonio Rodrigues | Man killed in Raleigh police shootout was on probation for domestic violence-related charges

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — The man who police say shot and critically wounded a Raleigh police officer Monday night had a history of stalking, and the victim in those cases appears to be a woman who lived at the home where the shootout took place Monday.

Raleigh Police shot and killed 70-year-old Antonio Rodrigues Monday night after they say he started shooting at officers. It led to a tense situation in the Renaissance Park neighborhood, with neighbors being asked to shelter in place. 73-year-old John Rowe was also killed, but it’s unclear exactly how and what his relationship was to the situation.

    Rodrigues’ previous charges and convictions

Court documents obtained by ABC11 show that Rodrigues has convictions linked to incidents in 2014, 2021, and 2022.

    • He was convicted of felony stalking in Carteret County back in 2014.

    • He also pleaded guilty to several counts of stalking (both felony and misdemeanor) and disclosing private images in Wake County for incidents in 2021 and 2022.

    • He was convicted in March of 2023 and sentenced to 32 months of probation, meaning he was still on probation when the shootout took place Monday night.

The initial call Monday came in as a residential burglary, with police saying Rodrigues had a prior relationship with the woman who lived at the home where this was taking place.

The woman who owns the home is also listed as the victim in the incidents from 2021 and 2022. ABC11 is working to learn if she’s also the victim in the 2014 case.

The documents detail that Rodrigues sent multiple unwanted texts and calls to the victim, as well as sending private images of her to her place of employment. It appears that they were addressed to other people at the office, not the victim. The documents say that Rodrigues sent those photos “with the intent to coerce, harass, intimidate, demean, humiliate, or cause financial loss” to the victim. Under his plea agreement, the judgment against Rodrigues was classified as domestic violence.

The court also ordered Rodrigues not to have any contact with the victim, and to stay at least 300 yards away from her. It also ordered him to destroy all images he had of the victim and undergo an abuser treatment program.

Antonio Rodrigues, the man killed in a Raleigh police shootout, was on probation for domestic violence-related charges. Rodrigues, 34, was involved in a violent altercation with police officers after they attempted to serve him with a warrant for violating his probation.

According to authorities, Rodrigues had a history of domestic violence incidents and was on probation for previous charges related to those cases. The shootout occurred after Rodrigues allegedly fired at officers during the attempted arrest, resulting in his death.

Domestic violence is a serious issue that affects countless individuals and families, and it is important to take action to prevent further tragedies. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this heartbreaking situation.

A Maryland woman has been arrested on charges of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence, among others, in a fatal crash that killed an NFL draftee and two of his former teammates near Joint Base Andrews in July 2024.

Cori Clingman, of Upper Marlboro, was arrested and charged on Thursday, Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy said during a news conference.

Prosecutors allege Clingman rammed into a Dodge Charger on July 6, 2024, while driving on Route 4-Pennsylvania Avenue.

Three men inside that Charger were killed: Isaiah Hazel, 23, of Upper Marlboro, Khyree Jackson, 24, of Waldorf, and Anthony Lytton Jr., 24, of Upper Marlboro. Clingman and two other passengers in her silver Infinity Q50 were not injured in the crash.

Jackson had been drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in Round 4 of the 2024 NFL Draft. The three men were friends and former teammates at Wise High School in Upper Marlboro.

“These were three young men who had gotten it right in life, who had amazing, bright futures ahead of them; but on July 6, they were taken away from all of us,” Braveboy said.

A grand jury returned a 13-count indictment against Clingman, charging her with grossly negligent and criminally negligent vehicular manslaughter, as well as counts related to driving under the influence of alcohol.

“This was a horrific tragedy that should not have occurred,” Braveboy said.

  • Woman indicted in crash that killed Vikings rookie Khyree Jackson

The Vikings honored Jackson throughout the season in the locker room and on the field.

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — A woman has been indicted in connection to a crash that killed Minnesota Vikings rookie cornerback Khyree Jackson in July 2024.

In a press conference on Thursday afternoon, Prince George’s County (Maryland) state attorney Aisha Braveboy announced that a grand jury returned a 13-count indictment against Cori Clingman, including counts of vehicular manslaughter and driving while under the influence of alcohol. Braveboy said Clingman is currently in custody pending a bond review. She’s facing a maximum sentence of 30 years, according to Braveboy.

Police said Jackson was riding in a vehicle on July 6, 2024, in Maryland with two former high school teammates when another vehicle attempting to change lanes struck them at a high rate of speed. The two teammates, Isaiah Hazel and Anthony Lytton, Jr., were also killed.

“These were three young men who had gotten it right in life, who had amazing, bright futures ahead of them.” said Braveboy. “But on July 6, they were taken from all of us. … This was a horrific tragedy that should not have occurred.”

The Vikings honored Jackson throughout the season in the locker room and on the field. His locker and No. 31 jersey went unused, while players wore a decal with his initials.

Jackson, 24, was a fourth-round pick for the Vikings and was in the running to earn a starting spot after a strong showing at OTAs. He was a receiver in high school and helped lead his team to two state championships before attending Arizona Western Community College. He returned home after just a few weeks and eventually got so good at video games, that he considered pursuing a career as an NBA 2K League player.

He was training for a tournament when he got a call from Fort Scott Community College about returning to the football field. He spent one season at Fort Scott before transferring to East Mississippi Community College for the 2020 season, which was eventually canceled due to COVID. He soon joined Alabama, where his first start came in the 2021 national championship game, and one year later, he transferred to Oregon to finish his collegiate career.

“From the moment Khyree was drafted and showed up here, he had a unique journey up until that moment,” Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell said in a press conference at the time of Jackson’s death.

“… Throughout the draft process and then his early time being a Minnesota Viking, you felt a guy that had such a laser focus on what his mission — his plan — was. And it really showed up in the spring. He had a very, very good spring, and was really looking forward to coming back to training camp and being well on his way to that path to having a big impact on our team for this year.”

In a tragic turn of events, a woman has been indicted in the crash that claimed the life of Vikings rookie Khyree Jackson. The young football player’s promising career was cut short in a devastating accident that has left his family, friends, and fans reeling.

The details of the crash are still under investigation, but it is clear that this loss has had a profound impact on the community. Jackson was a talented athlete with a bright future ahead of him, and his untimely death has left a void that will be difficult to fill.

As we await further developments in this case, let us remember Khyree Jackson and the impact he had on those around him. Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time.

Maryland State Police troopers responded to the crash on Northbound Route 4 and Pennsylvania Avenue and Presidential Parkway north of Dower House Road in Upper Marlboro. Police said that three cars were involved in the incident.

Cori Clingman, who was driving the silver Infinity, hit the Dodge that Jackson, Hazel and Lytton were in when attempting to change lanes, according to a preliminary police investigation. The Charger was forced off the right side of the road, where it hit multiple tree stumps before coming to a rest. Clingman, a 23-year-old from Upper Marlboro, then hit the Impala. • Teen who killed 3 at Taylor Swift-themed dance class sentenced to over 50 years

LONDON (AP) — A teenager who stabbed three young girls to death at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in England was sentenced Thursday to more than 50 years in prison for what a judge called “the most extreme, shocking and exceptionally serious crime.”

Judge Julian Goose said 18-year-old Axel Rudakubana “wanted to try and carry out mass murder of innocent, happy young girls.”

Goose said that he couldn’t impose a sentence of life without parole, because Rudakubana was under 18 at the time of the crime.

But the judge said he must serve 52 years, minus the six months he’s been in custody, before being considered for parole, and “it is likely he will never be released.”

Rudakubana was 17 when he attacked the children in the seaside town of Southport in July, killing Alice Da Silva Aguiar, 9, Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7, and Bebe King, 6. He wounded eight other girls, ranging in age from 7 to 13, along with teacher Leanne Lucas and John Hayes, a local businessman who intervened.

The attack shocked the country and set off both street violence and soul-searching. The government has announced a public inquiry into how the system failed to stop the killer, who had been referred to the authorities multiple times over his obsession with violence.

    Defendant disrupts the hearing

Rudakubana faced three counts of murder, 10 of attempted murder and additional charges of possessing a knife, the poison ricin and an al-Qaida manual. He unexpectedly changed his plea to guilty on all charges on Monday.

But he wasn’t in court to hear sentence passed on Thursday.

Hours earlier he had been led into the dock at Liverpool Crown Court in northwest England, dressed in a gray prison tracksuit. But as prosecutors began outlining the evidence, Rudakubana interrupted by shouting that he felt ill and wanted to see a paramedic.

Goose ordered the accused to be removed when he continued shouting. A person in the courtroom shouted “Coward!” as Rudakubana was taken out.

    The hearing continued without him.

    Horror on a summer day

Prosecutor Deanna Heer described how the attack occurred on the first day of summer vacation when 26 little girls were “gathered around the tables making bracelets and singing along to Taylor Swift songs.”

Rudakubana, armed with a large knife, intruded and began stabbing the girls and their teacher.

The court was shown video of the suspect arriving at the Hart Space venue in a taxi and entering the building. Within seconds, screams erupted and children ran outside in panic, some of them wounded. One girl made it to the doorway, but was pulled back inside by the attacker. She was stabbed 32 times but survived.

Gasps and sobs could be heard in court as the videos played.

Heer said two of the dead children “suffered particularly horrific injuries which are difficult to explain as anything other than sadistic in nature.” One of the dead girls had 122 injuries, while another suffered 85 wounds.

    A teenager obsessed with violence

The prosecutor said Rudakubana had “a longstanding obsession with violence, killing, genocide.”

“His only purpose was to kill. And he targeted the youngest and most vulnerable in society,” she said, as relatives of the victims watched on in the courtroom.

Heer said that when he was taken to a police station, Rudakubana was heard to say: “It’s a good thing those children are dead, I’m so glad, I’m so happy.”

The killings triggered days of anti-immigrant violence across the country after far-right activists seized on incorrect reports that the attacker was an asylum-seeker who had recently arrived in the U.K. Some suggested the crime was a jihadi attack, and alleged that police and the government were withholding information.

Rudakubana was born in Cardiff, Wales, to Christian parents from Rwanda, and investigators haven’t been able to pin down his motivation. Police found documents about subjects including Nazi Germany, the Rwandan genocide and car bombs on his devices.

In the years before the attack, he had been reported to multiple authorities over his violent interests and actions. All of the agencies failed to spot the danger he posed.

In 2019, he phoned a children’s advice line to ask “What should I do if I want to kill somebody?” He said he had taken a knife to school because he wanted to kill someone who was bullying him. Two months later, he attacked a fellow student with a hockey stick and was convicted of assault.

    The definition of terrorism

Prosecutors said Rudakubana was referred three times to the government’s anti-extremism program, Prevent, when he was 13 and 14 — once after researching school shootings in class, then for uploading pictures of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi to Instagram and for researching a London terror attack.

But they concluded his crimes should not be classed as terrorism because Rudakubana had no discernable political or religious cause. Heer said “his purpose was the commission of mass murder, not for a particular end, but as an end in itself.”

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said this week that laws might need updating to combat a “new threat” from violent individuals whose mix of motivations test the traditional definition of terrorism, “acts of extreme violence carried out by loners, misfits, young men in their bedrooms.”

    Wrenching testimony from victims

Several relatives and survivors read emotional statements in court, describing how the attack had shattered their lives.

Lucas, 36, who ran the dance class, said that “the trauma of being both a victim and a witness has been horrendous.”

“I cannot give myself compassion or accept praise, as how can I live knowing I survived when children died?” she said.

A 14-year-old survivor, who can’t be named because of a court order, said that while she was physically recovering. “we will all have to live with the mental pain from that day forever.”

“I hope you spend the rest of your life knowing that we think you’re a coward,” she said.

The prosecutor read out a statement from the parents of Alice Da Silva Aguiar, who said their daughter’s killing had “shattered our souls.”

“We used to cook for three. Now we only cook for two. It doesn’t seem right,” they said. “Alice was our purpose for living, so what do we do now?”

A tragic and senseless crime has come to a close as the teenage boy who killed three people at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class has been sentenced to over 50 years in prison. The 17-year-old culprit, whose name is being withheld due to his age, opened fire during the class, claiming the lives of three innocent victims and injuring several others.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, but it is believed that the teenager had a personal vendetta against one of the participants in the class. The devastating incident has left the community shaken and grieving for the lives lost.

The sentencing of over 50 years serves as a reminder of the severity of the crime committed and the impact it has had on the victims and their families. Justice has been served, but the scars left behind by this tragedy will forever be felt by those affected.

As we mourn the loss of the victims and try to make sense of this heartbreaking event, let us also remember to cherish the moments we have with our loved ones and hold them close. Life is precious and fragile, and it is important to appreciate every moment we have together.

  • U.K. Teenager Who Killed 3 Girls in Southport Sentenced to Life in Prison

The teenager who killed three young girls and wounded 10 other people in a knife attack on a children’s dance class in Southport, England, last summer was sentenced on Thursday to life in prison, with a minimum term of 52 years.

The attacker, Axel Rudakubana, 18, pleaded guilty to his crimes earlier this week. He refused to attend the sentencing after a number of outbursts earlier in the day prompted the judge to order him removed from court.

“The harm that Rudakubana has caused to each family, to each child, to the community has been profound and permanent,” said Judge Julian Goose, who presided over the case. “It was such extreme violence of the utmost and exceptionally high seriousness that it is difficult to comprehend why it was done.”

The judge was not able to sentence him to a whole life order — a life sentence with the stipulation that the perpetrator should never be released from prison on parole — because he was just 17 at the time of the deadly attack. But Mr. Rudakubana must serve a minimum term of 52 years, according to the sentence, before he could possibly be paroled, with the judge adding that it is unlikely that he will ever be released.

Judge Goose noted that Mr. Rudakubana had been “determined to disrupt the hearing” so that he would not have to face his victims’ families.

Mr. Rudakubana had appeared in Liverpool Crown Court wearing a gray sweatsuit on Thursday morning, with a blue medical mask covering his mouth and nose. As prosecutors began reading out the details of the case, Mr. Rudakubana screamed, “I need to speak to a paramedic because I feel ill.”

The judge noted that medical specialists had examined Mr. Rudakubana that morning and determined him fit to attend the hearing. He continued to yell for several minutes.

Judge Goose said: “These proceedings are being conducted under my control, not yours, Mr. Rudakubana. Do you understand?” He then ordered Mr. Rudakubana removed from the court, saying, “I won’t have him disrupting.”

Prosecutors proceeded to read out the details of their case against him, revealing the harrowing nature of the attack on July 29. Deanna Heer, a lawyer for the prosecution, said he “targeted the youngest, most vulnerable in order to spread the greatest level of fear and outrage, which he succeeded in doing.”

She told the courtroom that while Mr. Rudakubana was under arrest at the police station after the attack, he was heard to say, “It’s a good thing those children are dead” and “I’m so glad.”

Ms. Heer recounted how he had traveled by taxi to Hart Space, where a sold-out Taylor Swift-themed dance class for children ages 6 to 11 was underway during the summer break from school.

Visual evidence shown in court, taken from CCTV footage and police-worn body cameras, showed Mr. Rudakubana arriving outside the dance studio that was crowded with 26 children.

He entered the building and rampaged through the room, stabbing several children as well as Leanne Lucas, who had organized the class. Moments later, screams could be heard on outdoor CCTV footage, before children began running from the building.

Some were covered in blood and collapsed before bystanders helped them.

Several people wept in the courtroom as the footage was shown, and some chose to leave, overcome by emotion.

The injuries suffered by Bebe King, 6, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7, were so severe that they died inside the building, the police said. Alice da Silva Aguiar, 9, ran outside with the other children but soon collapsed. She was taken to the hospital and died the next day. Eight other children and two adults were wounded in the attack.

But amid the horror, there was also heroism. The court heard how after Ms. Lucas was stabbed in the back, she still managed to usher the children out the door and urge them to run for safety, even as she bled from a severe wound.

Another teacher in the dance studio at the time of the attack, Heidi Liddle, also encouraged children to flee, before one girl ran toward the bathroom. Ms. Liddle followed her inside, locked the door and braced her foot against it to protect them. She told the girl not to make a sound. The police later rescued them.

Two window cleaners working nearby, Marcin Tyjon and Joel Verite, heard the commotion and rushed to the scene. Mr. Verite followed the police into the building, picked up Bebe and carried her out of the building, screaming as he did so because of the severity of her injuries. Mr. Tyjon gave CPR to Alice in a parking lot outside.

Ms. Lucas, in a statement read out in court, said that her injuries had affected her physically and mentally.

“I, as do the girls, have scars we cannot unsee, scars we cannot move on from,” she said, adding, “To discover that he had always set out to hurt the vulnerable is beyond comprehensible. For Alice, Elsie, Bebe, Heidi and the surviving girls, I’m surviving for you.”

Since Mr. Rudakubana pleaded guilty, a portrait of a deeply troubled young man obsessed with violence has emerged, as has the fact that he was on the radar of the local authorities for years before the attack in Southport, a town north of Liverpool.

After the attack, a series of anti-immigrant riots broke out in Britain after disinformation about the perpetrator’s identity swirled on social media and messaging apps. False claims that he was an undocumented immigrant or newly arrived asylum seeker were amplified by far-right agitators. Mr. Rudakubana is a British citizen who was born in Wales to parents originally from Rwanda.

At age 13 and 14, he was referred three times to Prevent, a British counterterrorism program. The first time was for researching school shootings during class, in 2019. Then in 2021, he was referred for uploading images of Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi, the Libyan dictator, to his Instagram account, and for researching the London Bridge terrorist attack. But those referrals were ultimately dropped because it was determined each time that he did not meet the threshold for intervention.

There was no evidence that he ascribed to any particular political or religious ideology, the police and prosecutors said. Content found on Mr. Rudakubana’s computer and tablets showed a longstanding fascination with violence, killing and genocide.

The material included a history of Nazi Germany, reports on violence in modern Sri Lanka, documents about war in Chechnya, a book on clan cleansing in Somalia, academic reports on the Rwandan genocide, and a paper on punishments used on enslaved people on 18th-century British plantations.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Tuesday that the attack was a sign that terrorism in the country was evolving, and that young people were being radicalized by “a tidal wave of violence freely available online.”

Speaking during the sentencing hearing, Stan Reiz, the defense lawyer for Mr. Rudakubana, said that his client showed a “total lack of empathy” but added: “There is no psychiatric evidence before the court that a mental disorder contributed to the defendant’s actions.”

Mr. Rudakubana was also convicted of producing a biological toxin, after investigators found ricin, a lethal chemical, under his bed, and of “possessing information” described as “of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism,” because he had downloaded a PDF file titled “Military Studies in the Jihad Against the Tyrants: The Al Qaeda Training Manual.”

The case has raised questions about how the authorities missed opportunities to stop the violence before it began. The government has said it will conduct a public inquiry into the case to better understand what happened and what needs to change. But the case has also highlighted the issue of young people fixated on extreme violence who gain access to online images and messages that drive that obsession. Still, at the end of the day, the authorities said that on the day of the sentencing, the focus should remain on the victims.

“Today is about the families,” Serena Kennedy, the chief constable of Merseyside Police, said in a statement. “It’s about the three gorgeous little girls, Elsie, Bebe and Alice, and all those victims who were injured on the day, but also traumatized, and just remembering the impact that this has had on them and will continue to have on them for the rest of their lives.”

On October 5th, 2021, a U.K. teenager who brutally murdered three young girls in Southport has been sentenced to life in prison. The 17-year-old killer, whose identity has been protected due to their age, was found guilty of the heinous crimes after a trial that shocked the nation.

The victims, aged 13, 14, and 15, were lured to a secluded area by the teenager under the guise of a party. However, once they arrived, the girls were viciously attacked and left for dead. Their bodies were discovered by a passerby the following day, sending shockwaves through the community.

The judge presiding over the case described the teenager’s actions as “evil and unforgivable” and handed down the maximum sentence of life in prison with no possibility of parole. The families of the victims expressed relief at the verdict, but also spoke of the pain and loss they continue to endure.

As the community mourns the loss of these young lives, the sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of senseless violence. May the memories of the three girls be honored and may justice be served for their untimely deaths.

  • Man killed at ECU in officer-involved shooting :: WRAL.com

WITN reports a man is dead after an officer-involved shooting at an ECU facility Monday evening.

The Greenville Police Department said officers were called to assist ECU police at the ECU North Recreational Complex at 601 Recreational Way after a report of a man with a gun who was threatening to harm himself around 4:30 p.m.

Officials say at around 5:15 p.m., the man raised a gun at police officers, causing an officer to shoot and kill him.

The Greenville officer who shot the man has been placed on administrative assignment. The SBI has also been requested to help follow up with investigating the shooting.

A witness said he was playing frisbee golf at the ECU North Recreational Center when he saw the man.

“We were real close to him, we were like 10 feet, 15 feet away from him,” Leo Brown said. “I say hey to him, he didn’t respond, he just shook his head and then we kept continuing playing. One cop came to us, he like y’all need to back up this guy’s armed, he’s dangerous and we were….in shock because we were real real close to him and we backed up and after like a few minutes they started talking to him. The guy wasn’t cooperating and I think they shot him. I heard gunshots.”

The witness said he was about 100-150 feet away after officers told him to back up when he heard two gunshots.

According to officials, the man who was killed is believed to be middle-aged and is not believed to have any affiliation with ECU.

When asked why an ECU campus wide alert wasn’t sent out, ECU’s Deputy Chief of Police Chris Sutton said that was due to the location of the incident and that there was no sign of an ongoing threat near the main ECU or health campus.

Officials say more information will be released as it becomes available. Anyone who witnessed the shooting is asked to contact police.

The recent tragedy at East Carolina University has left the campus community in shock and mourning. A man was killed in an officer-involved shooting on campus, sparking outrage and sadness among students and faculty.

The details surrounding the incident are still unclear, but it is reported that the man was armed and threatening the safety of others on campus. The responding officers were forced to use lethal force to neutralize the threat, leading to the man’s tragic death.

The ECU community is coming together to support one another during this difficult time, and counseling services are being made available to those who may be struggling with the aftermath of the shooting.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the man who lost his life in this incident, as well as to the officers involved. May we all come together to heal and find a way to prevent such tragedies from happening in the future.
