  • Ukraine and Russia blame each other as missile kills at least four in Kursk school | Ukraine

Ukraine and Russia have traded blame for a deadly missile strike that killed at least four people in the dormitory of a boarding school situated in a part of Russia’s Kursk region held by Ukrainian forces.

Some of the war’s fiercest battles in recent months have been taking place in the Kursk region that borders Ukraine, where Kyiv forces have held swathes of the land since staging a major cross-border incursion last August.

Ukraine’s armed forces said on the Telegram messaging app that Russia launched an aerial bomb from Russian territory that struck a boarding school in Sudzha, killing at least four. The boarding school housed people preparing for evacuation.

As of 10pm (2000 GMT) on Saturday, 84 people had been rescued or received medical assistance, the statement said. Four of the injured were in a serious condition. Rescue efforts to clear rubble were proceeding.

The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said the attack on Sudzha, about 7.5 miles (12km) from the border with Ukraine, showed how Russia fights the war.

“They destroyed the building even though dozens of civilians were there,” Zelenskyy wrote on X. “This is how Russia waged war against Chechnya decades ago. They killed Syrians the same way. Russian bombs destroy Ukrainian homes the same way.”

    kursk highlighted in regional map

Russia’s defence ministry said early on Sunday on Telegram that Ukraine’s forces launched “a targeted missile strike on a boarding school in the city of Sudzha” from the territory of Ukraine.

Russia’s acting governor of the Kursk region, Alexander Khinshtein, also blamed Kyiv forces for the strike and said there was no reliable information yet about the number of potential victims.

A Ukrainian military spokesperson, Oleksiy Dmytrashkivskyi, had earlier said in a video posted on Facebook that nearly 100 people were under rubble at the site, which he said housed mostly elderly and infirm people.

Reuters was not able to verify the claims by either side independently, and the scope of the attack remained unclear.

Both sides deny targeting civilians in the war that Russia launched with its full-scale invasion in February 2022. Thousands of civilians, however, have been killed, the vast majority of them Ukrainian.

On October 14th, Ukraine and Russia found themselves at odds once again as a missile strike killed at least four people in a school in Kursk. Both countries have pointed fingers at each other, with Ukraine accusing Russia of orchestrating the attack and Russia denying any involvement.

The missile strike has further heightened tensions between the two neighboring countries, who have been embroiled in a long-standing conflict over territory and political influence. The casualties in the Kursk school tragedy have only added fuel to the fire, with both sides vowing to retaliate and seek justice for the victims.

As the international community watches with growing concern, the blame game between Ukraine and Russia shows no signs of abating. The tragic incident in Kursk serves as a stark reminder of the volatile nature of their relationship and the potential for further violence and bloodshed.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the victims and we can only hope for a swift resolution to this escalating crisis. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story. #Ukraine #Russia #Kursk #MissileStrike #Conflict #Tensions

  • Ebola kills nurse in Uganda’s capital Kampala, first death from virus since last outbreak ended in 2023

Kampala, Uganda — A nurse in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, has died of Ebola, a health official said Thursday, in the first recorded fatality since the last outbreak ended in 2023. Diana Atwine, permanent secretary of the health ministry, told reporters the 32-year-old male patient was an employee of Mulago Hospital, the main referral facility in Kampala.

After developing a fever, the patient was treated at several locations in Uganda before multiple lab tests confirmed he had been suffering from Ebola. The patient died on Wednesday, and Ebola was confirmed following postmortem tests, Atwine said.

Health authorities were “in full control of the situation,” she said.

Ebola, which is spread by contact with bodily fluids of an infected person or contaminated materials, manifests as a deadly hemorrhagic fever. Symptoms include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain and at times internal and external bleeding.

CBS News goes inside Ebola treatment center in Congo

    02:12

At least 44 contacts of the patient have been listed, including 30 health workers and patients at the hospital in Kampala, according to Uganda’s Ministry of Health.

Scientists don’t know the natural reservoir of Ebola, but they suspect the first person infected in an outbreak acquired the virus through contact with an infected animal or eating its raw meat. Ugandan officials are still investigating the source of the current outbreak.

Uganda has had multiple Ebola outbreaks, including one in 2000 that killed hundreds. A 2014-16 Ebola outbreak in West Africa killed more than 11,000 people, the disease’s largest death toll.

Ebola was discovered in 1976 amid two simultaneous outbreaks in South Sudan and Congo, where it occurred in a village near the Ebola River, after which the disease is named.

Tragic News: Ebola Claims Life of Nurse in Uganda’s Capital Kampala

It is with heavy hearts that we report the first death from the Ebola virus in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, since the last outbreak ended in 2023. The victim, a dedicated nurse who was on the frontlines of the fight against the deadly virus, succumbed to the disease despite her best efforts to save others.

This devastating loss serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by Ebola and the importance of remaining vigilant in the face of such outbreaks. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of the nurse who lost her life in the line of duty.

As health officials work tirelessly to contain the spread of the virus and prevent further casualties, we urge the public to remain informed and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their communities. Together, we can overcome this crisis and prevent any more lives from being lost to this deadly disease.

Rest in peace, brave nurse. Your sacrifice will not be forgotten.

  • Weight Tossed in Indoor Hammer Throw Event Kills Spectator at Track Meet

A heavy weight thrown by a participant at an indoor high school track meet cleared safety barriers and struck and killed a spectator in Colorado Springs on Sunday, the event organizers said.

“A member of the attending audience was killed when a hammer thrown by a participant cleared certified barriers and struck him,” said a statement from the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, which hosted the meet at its Mountain Lion Fieldhouse.

The meet was canceled after the incident.

A spokeswoman for the El Paso County coroner’s office said on Monday that it had not performed an autopsy and could not yet release the name of the person who was killed.

The Colorado United Track Club said in an email reported by 11 News and other local news media that the victim was the father of one of its team members.

In the more familiar hammer throw, contested outdoors at events like the Olympics, competitors spin around in a circle to build momentum and then release a heavy ball on a chain, which is known as a hammer.

For safety, the spinning takes place in a cage with an open segment for the hammer to go through when it is released.

At indoor meets like the one in Colorado Springs, the event is normally renamed the weight throw.

The implement is attached to a grip, rather than a chain, and is heavier than the hammer so that it does not travel as far. As in the hammer competition, the thrower is within a cage or netting.

At the Olympic Games, men can throw the hammer well over 200 feet. High school boys typically throw a 25-pound weight indoors, but they can still throw it quite a distance: The record for that age group is currently more than 90 feet.

Hammer and other throwing events can be dangerous, and cases of injury to competitors, officials and spectators are not rare.

As recently as September, a teenager was critically injured by a hammer at a meet in Australia.

Javelins can be thrown even farther than hammers, and their sharp tips also contribute to the danger. Even at the sport’s highest levels, disaster can occur.

In 2008, at the Golden League in Rome, the top level of the professional sport, a javelin thrown by an elite athlete struck a long jumper, Salim Sdiri of France, causing severe internal injuries.

In a tragic turn of events at a track meet, a spectator was killed by a weight tossed in the indoor hammer throw event. The incident occurred during a competition when the weight, which can weigh up to 35 pounds, flew out of the designated throwing area and struck a spectator in the stands.

Emergency services were immediately called to the scene, but unfortunately, the spectator succumbed to their injuries. The athlete involved in the throw was said to be devastated by the accident and is cooperating with authorities in the investigation.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers present in track and field events, even for spectators. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time. Safety measures and precautions must be strictly enforced to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.

  • Witness searches for answers after freak Colorado Springs track accident kills spectator

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – One person is dead after a freak accident at a high school track meet in Colorado Springs.

According to UCCS officials, it happened at the Mountain Lion Fieldhouse Sunday morning when a hammer from one of the athletes, “cleared certified barriers,” and hit a spectator who died at the scene.

“We are heartbroken at this horrible accident and are focused on supporting all involved,” UCCS Chancellor Jennifer Sobanet said.

One person at the meet, who wished to remain anonymous, told 11 News she thought more could have been done to protect attendees.

“If it was certified, I would believe it would be higher up and there wouldn’t be seating there and they would have already tested it to see if there was any possible incident, anything that could be possibly happening before you had two hundred people there,” she said.

She said she wasn’t the only one at the meet with safety concerns.

“This lady sat next to us and she commented about how the bleachers that were next to the hammer throw or the cage and she was like, ‘That’s terrifying, why is it next to that?“’

Another parent at the meet sent 11 News this picture of the set up:

A picture taken by a parent at Sunday’s track meet shows the throwing set up at Mountain Lion Fieldhouse.(KKTV)

The meet was not organized by the university or CHSSA, but the Colorado United Track Club. The club released the following statement to parents after the incident that reads in part:

    “Track family,

It is with a heavy heart that I share some sad news with you all.

At the UCCS track meet this morning, a spectator was hit in the head by a stray throwing weight. The man who was hit by this weight died on scene. He was the father of one of our CO United team members who attends Vista Ridge HS. The remainder of the meet was cancelled and all athletes were asked to go home.

Our Administration, Assistant Superintendent, and D12 Social Workers have been working to determine who to best support both CMHS students as well as the athletes and families of CO United who are affected. Kris Roberts, our D12 Athletic Director, is contacting the D49 Athletic Director to offer support and assistance as well.”

The club said they will have resources and support for the affected athletes and their families.

11 News has reached out to the club about what happened. We have not yet heard back. We have also reached out to UCCS about safety measures around the Mountain Lion Fieldhouse throwing area.

On Saturday, tragedy struck at the Colorado Springs track when a spectator was killed in a freak accident during a race. As a witness to the horrific incident, I am left searching for answers and grappling with the horror of what I saw.

The race had been going smoothly until suddenly, a car lost control and veered off the track, crashing into the stands where the spectator was standing. The impact was devastating, and despite the best efforts of emergency responders, the victim did not survive.

In the aftermath of the accident, I am haunted by the questions racing through my mind. How could this happen? Was it a mechanical failure, human error, or some other unforeseen circumstance? Could more have been done to prevent this tragedy?

As I try to come to terms with what I witnessed, I can’t help but feel a sense of helplessness and sadness. My thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones, who are now left to grieve the loss of their loved one in such a sudden and senseless manner.

I hope that a thorough investigation will provide answers and insight into how such a tragic event could occur. In the meantime, I will continue to hold onto the memories of that day and honor the memory of the victim by seeking justice and understanding in the wake of this heartbreaking accident.

  • Errant hammer throw at youth track meet kills spectator

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — An errant weight thrown by a competitor struck and killed a spectator at a youth track and field meet in Colorado, according to officials at the university where the competition was held.

The hammer — a heavy ball on a chain — in the hammer throw event cleared certified barriers before striking the man Sunday morning at the University of Colorado’s Colorado Springs campus, according to a university statement.

Firefighters pronounced the man dead at the scene. He apparently had tried to shield his wife and son from the ball, KRDO-TV reported.

He was the father of a competitor for the Colorado United Track Club that hosted the event for high school-age athletes from around the state, according to the station.

Authorities also did not identify the athlete who threw the hammer.

“We are heartbroken at this horrible accident and are focused on supporting all involved,” campus Chancellor Jennifer Sobanet said in a statement.

The weight used in the hammer throw event weighs 16 pounds for men and 9 pounds for women in adult competition, according to World Athletics, the international track and field governing body.

Fatal accidents at track and field competitions are rare. A hammer killed a student at a college track and field meet at Wheaton College in Illinois in 2017.

A shot put struck and killed an officiant during practice at the U.S. track and field championships in Los Angeles in 2005.

This past weekend at a youth track meet, tragedy struck when an errant hammer throw resulted in the death of a spectator. The event, which was supposed to be a fun and competitive gathering for young athletes, quickly turned into a somber and heartbreaking scene.

The hammer throw is a track and field event where athletes throw a heavy metal ball attached to a wire. It requires precision, strength, and skill to execute safely. Unfortunately, in this instance, something went terribly wrong.

The thrower, whose name has not been released, lost control of the hammer mid-throw, sending it veering off course and into the stands where spectators were seated. One unlucky individual was struck by the hammer and tragically lost their life as a result.

The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the inherent dangers present in sports, even at the youth level. It also raises questions about the safety protocols in place at such events and the need for stricter regulations to prevent similar accidents from occurring in the future.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the victim, as well as to all those affected by this terrible tragedy. May this serve as a wake-up call for the sporting community to prioritize safety above all else.

  • Rainy season kills 18 people, affects 50,000 families in Bolivia

La Paz, Jan 24 (UNI) Eighteen people have been killed and over 50,000 families across eight of Bolivia’s nine departments have been affected by the rainy season that began in November, said an official on Thursday.

Twelve municipalities have been declared disaster zones while another 55 are facing severe difficulties due to flooding and landslides, said Deputy Civil Defense Minister Juan Carlos Calvimontes.

He added that heavy rains are expected to continue in the coming weeks, potentially causing further flooding.

An urgent intervention plan is being coordinated with local mayors to mitigate the adverse effects of the extreme weather and provide assistance to the hardest-hit communities, he noted.

    UNI XINHUA ARN

The rainy season in Bolivia has taken a deadly toll, with reports indicating that at least 18 people have lost their lives due to heavy rains and flooding. In addition to the tragic loss of life, over 50,000 families have been affected by the severe weather conditions, with many left homeless and in need of urgent assistance.

The heavy rains have caused rivers to overflow, leading to widespread flooding and destruction of homes, infrastructure, and agricultural land. Rescue teams have been working around the clock to evacuate those in affected areas and provide relief to those in need.

The government of Bolivia has declared a state of emergency in several regions, allocating resources and coordinating efforts to help those affected by the natural disaster. However, the scale of the devastation is immense, and more support is needed to ensure that all those impacted by the rainy season receive the help they require.

As we witness the devastating impact of the rainy season in Bolivia, our thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones and those who are struggling to cope with the aftermath of the disaster. Let us come together to support the people of Bolivia during this difficult time and provide them with the assistance they need to rebuild their lives.

  • Raleigh woman speaks after ex-husband kills her partner, dies in police shootout :: WRAL.com

The ex-wife of a man accused of fatally shooting another man
and shooting a Raleigh police officer spoke Friday for the first time since she
    survived the ordeal.

Jill Rohner is the ex-wife of Antonio Rodrigues, who police
say broke into her home Tuesday night and killed John Rowe, 73. Then, Rodrigues
died in an exchange of gunfire with Raleigh police officers in Raleigh’s Renaissance
    Park neighborhood.

“I thought I was going to be dead, but he could have, he could have killed me,” Rohner said of Rodrigues.

Officer Max Gillick was hospitalized after Rodrigues shot him on Tuesday, police said. As of Friday, Gillick remains in critical condition at WakeMed.

Rohner said she heard a knock on the door of her home on Tuesday when a
man with a face covering held a bouquet of flowers.

“He [Rodrigues] had a big mask on his face and a hood, at
which point he just kind of plowed through the front door, and both John and I
were like, ‘Whoa … dude, what are you doing? Get out of here,’” Rohner said.

Rohner said Rodrigues shot Rowe after a struggle. Rohner said
she tried to drag Rowe out of the house as police officers started to arrive.

Police instructed Rohner to run toward them while she was wearing
    only socks. Eventually,

“I didn’t want to leave John [Rowe], but I did that,” Rohner
said. “I ran across the median.”

Kayla Biesaga, who lives across the street from Rowe, said
    her family provided
    Rohner shelter
while police and Rodrigues exchanged gunfire.

Rohner said she was in a relationship with Rowe.

“A couple years ago, [I] met this wonderful man, John Rowe,
who I have recently said to people, ‘It took me 67 years, but I finally got it
right [and] found the right person,’” Rohner said. “[I] was very much in love.”

    Court
    records show
Rohner had a restraining order against Rodrigues, who had
multiple convictions for stalking and harassing his ex-wife.

In 2014, Rohner and Rodrigues filed for divorce in Carteret
County. That same year he was convicted the first time for stalking. Rodrigues
was convicted again in 2023 for stalking and disclosing private images of
    Rohner.

“He did not take me asking him for a divorce well at all,”
Rohner said. “So, 11 years ago, he actually had a gun to my temple at one point
    back then.

WRAL Investigates found Rodrigues’ most recent addresses in
Carteret County and New Jersey, both of which were many miles from Rohner’s
    home in Raleigh.

“Basically, for 11 years, every year, I have refiled for a
domestic violence protective order,” Rohner said. “And almost every year that I
have done that, I have pleaded that he get serious help, mental health kind of
help because I suspected that he could snap at any minute.

“He was just constantly harassing me.”

The court records show Rodrigues was scheduled to go through
abuser treatment, get a mental health assessment and “have no contact with
    [Rohner].”

Rodrigues’ latest conviction came in 2024, which resulted in
probation with stipulations that he had to stay at least 300 yards away from
    Rohner.

The documents list the maximum punishment for the crimes as
about 17 years. Instead, a judge gave Rodrigues three years probation, which
    would’ve run through March 2026.

“There [were] felonies, then that got dropped for the
divorce purposes, in order for him to finally sign and let me be divorced,” Rohner
    said.

Rohner said Rowe was a retired family doctor who
    graduated from Yale.

According to Rohner, Rowe leaves behind kids and grandkids
    in Durham.

“He [was] a widow, so they lost their mother four years ago,
and they lost a sister a year before that, and now they’ve lost him, and it’s
just a mess,” Rohner said of Rowe’s family.
