  • Fire at Turkey Ski Resort Kills at Least 66

A fire blazed through a 12-story hotel at a ski resort in Turkey on Tuesday, killing at least 66 people and injuring 51 others, the authorities said, turning an idyllic vacation spot into a smoke-filled nightmare.

The disaster struck during Turkey’s winter holiday, when children are off school and many families go on vacation, including to ski resorts. It was not clear how many children were among the dead, but a number were reported by acquaintances.

The cause of the fire was unclear.

Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc said on social media that six prosecutors had been assigned to investigate the blaze and that four people, including the hotel’s owner, had been detained.

The fire broke out before dawn in the Grand Kartal Hotel in Kartalkaya, 180 miles east of Istanbul, sending large flames from the windows and thick smoke billowing from the roof.

About 230 guests were believed to be in the hotel at the time, in addition to a number of employees. Some survivors told the Turkish news media of terrifying escapes, exacerbated by a lack of fire alarms or clear fire escapes.

“The smoke was so intense that we could hardly breathe,” Eylem Senturk, who was vacationing at the hotel with her family, told the state-run Anadolu news agency.

She and her daughter raced downstairs to an exit, but the smoke was too intense for her husband, she said, so he jumped from a window onto a lower rooftop and then onto a car to reach the ground.

Ms. Senturk said she had not heard a fire alarm, but realized that the building was burning when she heard people shouting in the hallway and opened the door to see smoke. She did not see any fire escapes, she said.

“If there had been a fire alarm, we could have been faster,” she said. “The lack of a fire alarm and fire escape trapped people.”

Another survivor, Muzaffer Cig, also told Anadolu that there was no fire escape. “As there was no fire escape, we ran down the staircase,” he said.

Speaking to reporters at the scene, Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy said that the hotel had been inspected in 2021 and 2024 and was found to have the necessary fire precautions. He also said the building had two fire escapes.

But no external escapes are visible in aerial footage of the building broadcast on Turkish television after the fire.

The dozens of deaths in a building surrounded by snow-capped peaks where families had gone expecting good times prompted calls for accountability, but such calls after past disasters have not gone far.

The fire on Tuesday started at around 3:30 a.m., when most hotel occupants were asleep, according to news reports. In an effort to evacuate, some strung bedsheets together to make a rope that they used to descend to a lower floor, video footage showed.

Dozens of rescuers and fire trucks rushed to the site from surrounding towns.

“When I left my room, I saw the flames at the fourth floor, the floor of the restaurant,” Necmi Kepcetutan, a ski instructor who also worked at the hotel, told the NTV network. “Then it started to swarm the hotel. We helped around a dozen or more people to evacuate, since we know the hotel very well.”

“People were screaming to be rescued,” he added.

Two people — a guest and a hotel employee — died after jumping from the building, the area’s governor, Abdulaziz Aydin, told Anadolu.

The fire took place on the same day that an explosion injured four people at another Turkish ski resort, in the central province of Sivas, its governor’s office said in a statement.

The reason for the explosion was unclear. Two skiers and a trainer were lightly injured, while another trainer had second-degree burns on the hands and face, the statement said.

Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the tragic loss of life in the devastating fire at a ski resort in Turkey. At least 66 people have been confirmed dead, with many others injured. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this difficult time. We also extend our gratitude to the firefighters and emergency responders who bravely worked to contain the fire and save lives. May the souls of the departed rest in peace. #TurkeyFire #SkiResortTragedy #PrayForTurkey

  • AT&T kills home Internet service in NY over law requiring $15 or $20 plans

AT&T has stopped offering its 5G home Internet service in New York instead of complying with a new state law that requires ISPs to offer $15 or $20 plans to people with low incomes.

The decision was reported yesterday by CNET and confirmed by AT&T in a statement provided to Ars today. “While we are committed to providing reliable and affordable Internet service to customers across the country, New York’s broadband law imposes harmful rate regulations that make it uneconomical for AT&T to invest in and expand our broadband infrastructure in the state,” AT&T said. “As a result, effective January 15, 2025, we will no longer be able to offer AT&T Internet Air, our fixed-wireless Internet service, to New York customers.”

New York started enforcing its Affordable Broadband Act yesterday after a legal battle of nearly four years. Broadband lobby groups convinced a federal judge to block the law in 2021, but a US appeals court reversed the ruling in April 2024, and the Supreme Court decided not to hear the case last month.

The law requires ISPs with over 20,000 customers in New York to offer $15 broadband plans with download speeds of at least 25Mbps, or $20-per-month service with 200Mbps speeds. The plans only have to be offered to households that meet income eligibility requirements, such as qualifying for the National School Lunch Program, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or Medicaid.

AT&T’s Internet Air was launched in some areas in 2023 and is now available in nearly every US state. The standard price for Internet Air is $60 a month plus taxes and fees, or $47 when bundled with an eligible mobile service. Nationwide, AT&T said it added 135,000 Internet Air customers in the most recent quarter.

Recently, AT&T has made the controversial decision to discontinue home Internet service in New York due to a new law requiring them to offer affordable plans priced at $15 or $20. This move has left many customers frustrated and without access to reliable Internet service.

The company cited the new law as being economically unfeasible and unsustainable for their business model. However, many customers are outraged at being left without an essential service, especially during a time when reliable Internet is more important than ever for remote work, online schooling, and staying connected with loved ones.

This decision highlights the ongoing debate around affordable Internet access and the role of telecommunications companies in providing essential services to the public. It also raises questions about the impact of regulatory measures on the industry and the potential consequences for consumers.

As the situation unfolds, it is crucial for policymakers, telecommunications companies, and consumers to come together to find a solution that ensures affordable and reliable Internet access for all. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.

  • Washington Post Cartoonist Ann Telnaes Quits After Bezos-Owned Paper Kills Trump Satire Piece

Washington Post Cartoonist Ann Telnaes Quits After Bezos-Owned Paper Kills Trump Satire Piece

Washington Post editorial cartoonist Ann Telnaes quit after a satirical cartoon, which poked fun at the paper’s owner Jeff Bezos and other media and tech giants bending the knee to President-elect Donald Trump, was killed.

The Pulitzer Prize winner shared her decision in a Substack post Friday.

“I have had editorial feedback and productive conversations—and some differences—about cartoons I have submitted for publication, but in all that time I’ve never had a cartoon killed because of who or what I chose to aim my pen at. Until now,” she said.

Telnaes had worked at the Washington Post since 2008. She described the political cartoon that did not get published, saying it “criticizes the billionaire tech and media chief executives who have been doing their best to curry favor with incoming President-elect Trump.”

The Washington Post did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

The cartoon included Facebook and Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Los Angeles Times publisher Patrick Soon-Shiong, the “Walt Disney Company/ABC News” depicted as Mickey Mouse and Washington Post owner Bezos. A rough draft of the scrapped cartoon can be seen below.

Telnaes criticized Bezos for his handling of the Washington Post in the months leading up to Trump’s election and those to follow. The paper did not endorse a presidential candidate in 2024 for the first time in decades, leading to three editorial board member resignations and widespread canceled subscriptions.

“Owners of such press organizations are responsible for safeguarding that free press— and trying to get in the good graces of an autocrat-in-waiting will only result in undermining that free press,” the cartoonist said of her former boss.

“As an editorial cartoonist, my job is to hold powerful people and institutions accountable. For the first time, my editor prevented me from doing that critical job. So I have decided to leave the Post,” she said. “I doubt my decision will cause much of a stir and that it will be dismissed because I’m just a cartoonist. But I will not stop holding truth to power through my cartooning, because as they say, ‘Democracy dies in darkness.’”

The post Washington Post Cartoonist Ann Telnaes Quits After Bezos-Owned Paper Kills Trump Satire Piece appeared first on TheWrap.

In a shocking turn of events, Washington Post cartoonist Ann Telnaes has announced her resignation after the Bezos-owned paper decided to kill her latest Trump satire piece.

Telnaes, known for her bold and controversial political cartoons, was reportedly told by editors that the cartoon, which depicted President Trump as a clown juggling “racist,” “misogynist,” and “xenophobe” balls, was too inflammatory and could potentially harm the paper’s reputation.

In a statement, Telnaes expressed her disappointment in the decision, stating that she feels stifled and censored by the paper’s management. She went on to say that she can no longer work for a publication that doesn’t support artistic freedom and the right to criticize those in power.

This incident has sparked a debate about the role of satire in journalism and the limits of freedom of expression in today’s political climate. Many are calling for the Washington Post to reconsider their decision and allow Telnaes to continue her work without interference.

As for Telnaes, she has not announced her plans for the future but has hinted that she may pursue other avenues to continue her satirical commentary on current events. Only time will tell what the next chapter holds for this talented artist.

  • Bourbon Street attacker acted alone, ‘evil act’ kills 14

Bourbon Street attacker acted alone, ‘evil act’ kills 14

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – Authorities held a press conference Thursday morning (Jan. 2), providing updates on the Bourbon Street terror attack that claimed the lives of 14 victims and injured 35 others early New Year’s Day.

FBI Deputy Director Christopher Raia confirmed that 14 victims died in the attack, along with the suspect, Shamsud Din Jabbar, bringing the total to 15 fatalities.

“This was a premeditated, evil act,” Raia told reporters.

    Shamsud-Din Jabbar
    Shamsud-Din Jabbar(FBI)

Officials revealed that Jabbar posted five videos between 1:20 a.m. and 3:02 a.m. on New Year’s Day, proclaiming support for ISIS.

In the first video, Raia says Jabbar expressed a desire to kill his friends and family, but ultimately desired to target Bourbon Street so the media headlines would highlight what he called the war between “believers and disbelievers.”

Jabbar stated he joined ISIS before summer of 2024.

“He was one hundred percent inspired by ISIS,” Raia said.

Authorities say Jabbar rented a pickup truck in Houston on Dec. 30 and drove to New Orleans on Dec. 31. Surveillance video reportedly shows Jabbar planting improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in coolers at two locations – the intersection of Bourbon and Orleans streets, and another two blocks away – before driving his truck into a crowd.

“It’s very hard to put into words and very hard to see,” Raia said, reflecting on the devastating scene.

The FBI confirmed that two viable IEDs were rendered safe by bomb technicians, while other reports of suspicious devices were determined to be unfounded or unviable. The public is not in danger, Raia assured.

Jabbar stayed at an Airbnb on Mandeville Street, where bomb-making materials were discovered. The house has been secured, and agents are conducting a thorough search for additional evidence.

Three cell phones tied to Jabbar and two laptops found at the Mandeville Street property are currently being processed.

    TERROR ATTACK

    Calls for Public Assistance

Authorities are asking anyone who was in the French Quarter on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day to come forward, especially those who may have stopped near the coolers containing the IEDs. Raia emphasized that these individuals are not connected to the attack but could provide valuable information.

Raia clarified that early suspicions of co-conspirators were based on surveillance footage showing patrons briefly interacting with the coolers containing IEDs, but the FBI has since determined these individuals were uninvolved, confirming that Jabbar acted alone.

    French Quarter Status

Bourbon Street remains closed to the public as local and federal officials conclude their investigation. Mayor LaToya Cantrell announced the street would reopen around 30 minutes before the Sugar Bowl’s 3 p.m. kickoff.

    Potential Link to Vegas Incident

The FBI is investigating a cybertruck explosion in Las Vegas for potential links to Jabbar. However, Raia cautioned that it is “very early in the investigation” and no definitive connection has been established.

FOX5 Las Vegas was live reporting the latest on the Cybertruck explosion in front of the Trump hotel.

    Landry Tours Scene

Governor Jeff Landry arrived with law enforcement officials to survey the area of the Bourbon Street terror attack Thursday morning before the press conference.

“At the end of the day, we want New Orleans to get back to business…and we also want to remember all those who lost their lives on the street,” Landry said in an exclusive interview with Fox 8.

Standing from the freshly cleared area where 15 people died, including the suspect, and at least 35 were injured, Landry made the point the victims had come to Bourbon Street to celebrate. He said that it would be an additional tragedy if the tourist center couldn’t return to its usual status.

“What people need to understand is, that it’s a two-pronged operation,” Landry said. “We’ve got a football game to put on today and at the same time there’s an active investigation by the FBI on a constant basis.”

    TERROR ATTACK

Landry said he will attend Thursday’s Sugar Bowl football game between Notre Dame and Georgia and that the city will be safe for visitors.

In a shocking and tragic turn of events, authorities have confirmed that the attacker who carried out the deadly rampage on Bourbon Street acted alone. The heinous act, which claimed the lives of 14 innocent people, has been described as an “evil act” by officials.

The attacker, whose identity has not yet been released, reportedly opened fire on unsuspecting bystanders in a crowded area of the popular tourist destination. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, leaving many questions unanswered as the community grapples with the senseless loss of life.

As the investigation into the attack continues, authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. The city of New Orleans is reeling from the tragedy, with residents and visitors alike mourning the lives lost in this senseless act of violence.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this difficult time. May justice be served for those who lost their lives, and may peace and healing come to the community in the wake of this devastating event.

UP Man Kills Mother, 4 Sisters. Records Video

    Lucknow:

The 24-year-old man accused of murdering his mother and four sisters at a hotel in Lucknow has said in a chilling video that he committed the killings because he did not want his “sisters to be sold”. In the video, which emerged hours after the shocking crime, Arshad alleges that neighbours and land mafia in their hometown Budaun captured their house and planned to traffick his sisters.

In the video, Arshad said he killed his mother and three sisters and the fourth was about to die. He also showed the bodies and said he choked them and slit their wrists and that his father helped him.

The victims have been identified as his mother Asma and sisters Alia (9), Alshia (19), Aksa (16) and Rahmeen (18).

“Our family has taken this step due to harassment by people in the neighbourhood. I have killed my mother and sisters. When police get this video, they must know that the locals are responsible. They harassed us to capture our house. We raised our voice, but no one heard. It has been 15 days that we have been sleeping on the footpath, wandering in the cold. We don’t want the children to wander in the cold. They have captured our house. The documents are with us,” says Arshad, who was arrested at the crime scene.

In the video, the young man said the family wanted to convert and appealed to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for justice.

He also named several people allegedly responsible for the deaths: Ranu, Aftab, Aleem Khan, Salim, Arif, Ahmad and Azhar. “They are land mafia, they also sell girls. They planned to frame the two of us (him and his father) in a false case and sell our sisters. We did not want that. So I was forced to kill my sisters by choking them and slitting their wrists.”

Arshad then showed the bodies of his mother and sisters. “I may not be alive till the morning,” he said, suggesting that he had planned to die by suicide too. “We are from Budaun, my aunt has proof (of residence) going back to 1947. They spread lies about us that we are Bangladeshis.”

Arshad said in the video that the family wanted to convert to live in peace. “We approached many people for help, but they did not help us. Now my sisters are dying and I will die in a short while. But no family in India should be forced to do this,” he said, requesting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Yogi Adityanath for justice. “I request with folded hands, we did not get justice in life, at least give us justice in death. They should get the strictest punishment. They are connected with leaders and police. They captured half of our plot and wanted to capture the other half.”

Arshad also said that a temple should come up on their land and their belongings must be donated to an orphanage so that our souls find joy. “I killed them with my father. What choice did I have? See them being sold in Hyderabad?”

“Ensure they get justice. They struggled a lot today. We have saved their honour,” he said, addressing the Chief Minister.

NDTV cannot verify the authenticity of the video.

Earlier, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central Lucknow, Raveena Tyagi said the murders were committed at Hotel Sharanjit. “The accused, identified as Arshad (24), allegedly killed five members of his own family. Following the gruesome act, the local police promptly caught the accused from the crime scene,” she said.

Forensic teams have collected samples from the crime scene.

This is a tragic and horrifying incident that has left many shocked and saddened. In Uttar Pradesh, a man has been accused of killing his mother and four sisters. What makes this case even more disturbing is that the accused allegedly recorded a video of the gruesome act.

The video, which has been circulating on social media, shows the man brutally attacking his family members with a sharp weapon. The motive behind this heinous crime is still unclear, but the police are investigating the matter.

It is truly heart-breaking to hear about such senseless acts of violence, especially when it involves family members. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their loved ones during this difficult time.

Let us hope that justice will be served and that such tragedies can be prevented in the future. May the souls of the deceased rest in peace.

  • Bangkok hotel fire near Thailand capital’s popular Khao San Road kills American man, at least 2 others

Bangkok hotel fire near Thailand capital’s popular Khao San Road kills American man, at least 2 others

Bangkok — Three foreign nationals including an American man died and seven other people were injured by a fire at a hotel in a popular tourist area of Thailand’s capital Bangkok, city authorities said Monday. Thailand’s national police said in a post on social media that a Brazilian woman died at the hotel and two men, an American and a Ukrainian, were pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The cause of the Sunday night blaze at the Ember Hotel near Khao San Road, an area popular with backpackers and budget travelers, was still under investigation.

A State Department spokesperson in Washington confirmed the death of a U.S. citizen in Bangkok to CBS News on Monday and offered the U.S. government’s condolences to the family, but declined to provide any further information citing privacy considerations.

Five other foreigners and two Thai nationals were injured, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration said Monday.

Bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt said firefighters reached the scene of the six-story hotel within five minutes of being alerted and rescued some 75 people with three cranes. Sittipunt ordered the hotel’s closure and investigations into the alarm system.

In July a fire broke out in Khao San Road’s busy Chinatown district, leading municipal authorities to deploy 40 fire engines to fight the blaze.

A month earlier a fire ripped through pet shops near Bangkok’s famed Chatuchak market, killing many caged animals and destroying stalls.

Concerns have long been raised about Thailand’s lax approach to health and safety regulations, particularly in its countless bars and hotels.

The kingdom expects 1.5 million foreign tourists over the new year period, government spokesman Jirayu Houngsub told local media, as the capital prepares a fireworks display Tuesday night.

Municipal authorities said Monday they would “stand by for readiness” ahead of the celebrations.

Our hearts go out to the victims and families affected by the tragic Bangkok hotel fire near Thailand’s popular Khao San Road. Reports indicate that an American man and at least two others have lost their lives in this devastating incident.

The fire broke out at the three-story building, which housed a hotel and several shops, in the early hours of the morning. Firefighters rushed to the scene to battle the blaze and rescue those trapped inside. Despite their efforts, the fire claimed multiple lives and caused extensive damage to the property.

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire and working to identify the victims. Our thoughts are with all those impacted by this tragedy, and we hope for a swift recovery for those injured.

As travelers, it serves as a stark reminder of the importance of fire safety and being vigilant while staying in accommodations abroad. Our deepest condolences go out to the loved ones of the victims during this difficult time.

A shark attack in Egypt’s Red Sea resort town of Marsa Alam has killed one foreigner and injured another, Egypt’s Ministry of Environment said in a statement Sunday.

The attack occurred in deep waters, the ministry said, outside the designated swimming area of Marsa Alam.

The injured foreigner was taken Porto Ghalib hospital for treatment, the ministry statement said, adding that an emergency committee has been established to investigate the incident.

Their nationalities have not been disclosed.

There have been several similar incidents in recent years.

Last year, a deadly shark attack killed a Russian citizen in the popular tourist city of Hurghada on Egypt’s eastern coast, prompting the closure of nearby beaches.

In a tragic incident at a popular Egyptian Red Sea resort, a shark attack has claimed the life of one foreigner and left another injured. The attack occurred while the victims were snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters, enjoying the beauty of the underwater world.

Authorities have confirmed that a shark was responsible for the attack, although the exact species has not been identified. The injured individual is currently receiving medical treatment, and their condition is reported to be stable.

This shocking incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of wildlife, even in seemingly safe and picturesque locations. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families during this difficult time.

We urge all visitors to the Red Sea to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines while enjoying the natural beauty of the ocean. Stay informed about local wildlife and take necessary precautions to prevent any potential incidents.

Tiger shark attack kills EU official in Egypt’s Red Sea

MARSA ALAM, Egypt – A shark attack in Egypt’s Red Sea near a popular tourist destination has left a European Union official dead and another injured, according to local media and state officials.

Egypt’s Ministry of Environment said the attack happened Sunday morning in deep water outside the swimming area in the northern region of Marsa Alam, a coastal town known for its sandy beaches and coral reefs.

Gianluca Di Gioia, 48, from Rome, was killed by a tiger shark while his friend, identified as 69-year-old Peppino Fappani, tried to stop the attack, Italian news agency ANSA reported. The attack happened while the two men were scuba diving to explore a coral reef. Family members said the two men were celebrating Di Gioia’s birthday on Dec. 21.

Fappani reportedly suffered “small bites” after intervening to help and was rushed to a hospital in Porto Ghalib along with Di Gioia’s body.

Both men were Italian nationals, according to Italian media. Di Gioia worked at the European Commission’s research center and had been working since 2012 at the European External Action Service (EEAS), the diplomatic service of the EU.

The area where the attack occurred has been closed to swimming until Wednesday as a precautionary measure, Minister of the Environment Dr. Yasmine Fouad said in a statement online. An urgent committee has been formed to investigate the causes of the attack.

Shark attacks, while rare, have occurred previously along the Egyptian Red Sea coast. This incident comes on the heels of the sinking of a tourist yacht near Marsa Alam last month, resulting in four deaths and seven still missing, ANSA reported.

The Italian Embassy in Cairo is reportedly providing consular assistance to Di Gioia’s family.

Tragic Tiger Shark Attack Claims Life of EU Official in Egypt’s Red Sea

In a devastating turn of events, an EU official was killed in a tiger shark attack while swimming in Egypt’s Red Sea. The incident occurred near the popular resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh, where the victim was vacationing.

The shark attack sent shockwaves through the local community and the victim’s colleagues in the European Union. The identity of the victim has not been released, but it is believed that they were a high-ranking official within the EU.

Authorities have warned beachgoers and swimmers to exercise caution and be vigilant while in the water, as tiger sharks are known to be aggressive predators. Shark attacks in the Red Sea are rare, but this tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers that lurk beneath the surface.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. May they find comfort and strength in the midst of this tragedy.
