Trump to Release Records on the Assassinations of the Kennedy Brothers and Martin Luther King
Donald J. Trump has said he will quickly release records relating to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, his brother Robert F. Kennedy and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as part of measures to restore confidence in government.
The assassinations, particularly that of the president, who was shot dead in Dallas in November 1963, have been the subject of decades of controversy as well as conspiracy theories. Mr. King was shot and killed in Memphis in April 1968, while Robert F. Kennedy was shot and killed in California that June, shortly after winning California’s Democratic primary. The three deaths shook America in different ways, and historians view each as a turning point in the tumultuous decade.
“As a first step toward restoring transparency and accountability to government, we will also reverse the over-classification of government documents,” Mr. Trump said at a rally on Sunday ahead of his inauguration, adding that documents related to other topics of “great public interest” would also be declassified. “It’s all going to be released, Uncle Sam,” he said.
Mr. Trump’s statement will likely generate particular interest among his supporters, given the fascination he has expressed with certain conspiracies and the fact that he survived an assassination attempt in July when he was shot and wounded while running for president.
In a surprising move, President Trump has announced that he will be releasing previously classified records related to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.The decision comes after years of speculation and conspiracy theories surrounding the deaths of these iconic figures. Many believe that there was more to the assassinations than what has been officially reported, and hope that the release of these records will shed light on the truth.
The release of these records could potentially change the way we view these historic events and could bring closure to the families and supporters of these influential figures.
Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

The life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will once again be celebrated and honored on Monday at events around the nation.
The Civil Rights icon, whose work to end segregation and racism through nonviolence earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, is the only non-president with a federal holiday named in his honor. Every year on MLK Day, the federal government closes and citizens across the U.S. take part in a day of service.
Here’s everything to know about MLK Day, including how it became a federal holiday.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2025:Are government offices open or closed? What to know
When is Martin Luther King Jr. Day?
The federal government shuts down on the third Monday of every January for the day to honor Martin Luther King Jr.
This year, that day is Jan. 20.
The holiday in his honor is timed to honor King’s birthday on Jan. 15, 1929.
However, the holiday, which did happen to align with his birthday in 2024, rarely falls on that actual day. That’s because of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which former President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law in 1968 to make many federal holidays occur on Mondays.
MLK Day aligns with Trump inauguration
This year, MLK Day also happens to be the day that President-elect Donald Trump will be inaugurated and take office for a second term.
It’s rare that such a coincidence has occurred, having only happened two other times: Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2013 and Bill Clinton’s in 1997.

Who was Martin Luther King Jr.?
The Baptist minister first came to national prominence during the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott in Alabama. King would go on to become one of the most prominent figures in the Civil Rights movement, founding the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957 and leading the 1963 March on Washington.
King is famed for advocating for civil disobedience and nonviolent methods to push back against racism and segregation.
In 1963, King delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech on the National Mall during the March on Washington.
What is the meaning of MLK Day?
MLK Day was designated as a national day of service in which all Americans are encouraged to volunteer to improve their communities, according to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture.
Across the nation, cities and local communities will host ceremonies and volunteer events on Monday.
Nationally, the King Center in Atlanta, Georgia is hosting a variety of events through Monday to commemorate King and honor those who embody the principles for which he stood.
The NAACP will also host its annual King Day at the Dome event, which Vice President Kamala Harris headlined in 2024. This year, Jaime Harrison, chair of the Democratic National Committee, will headline.
When was Martin Luther King Jr. assassinated?
King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, according to the Stanford Martin Luther King Jr. Research and Education Institute. He was standing on a second-floor balcony outside his room at the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee.
James Earl Ray confessed to shooting King and was sentenced to 99 years in prison. King’s killing sent shockwaves through America and is still regarded as a landmark event in U.S. history.
King, who was 39 at the time of his death, would be turning 96 this month.
How did Martin Luther King Jr. Day become a federal holiday?
The campaign for a federal holiday in King’s honor began four days after he was assassinated.
But despite the national fervor inspired by the death of the leader who was instrumental in the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964, legislation to honor him languished for years, according to the National Constitution Center.
It wasn’t for 15 years until after King’s death that civil rights activists finally succeeded in making Martin Luther King Jr. Day a nationally observed holiday.
On Nov. 2, 1983, Reagan signed a bill making the third Monday in January a federal holiday in observance of King’s legacy. The holiday was first observed three years later on Jan. 20, 1986.
Are government offices closed on MLK day?
Because MLK Day is a federal holiday, federal offices will be closed, and federal workers will have a paid day off, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day, observed on the third Monday of January each year, is a federal holiday that honors the life and legacy of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. But how did this day become a national holiday? The idea of a holiday to honor Martin Luther King Jr. first gained momentum just days after his assassination on April 4, 1968. Civil rights leaders and activists began advocating for a national day of remembrance to honor King’s contributions to the civil rights movement. Over the years, various states and cities began to observe the day as a holiday on their own accord.
In 1979, a bill was introduced in Congress to make King’s birthday a federal holiday. However, the bill faced opposition and was not passed. It was not until 1983, when a petition with over six million signatures was submitted to Congress in support of the holiday, that progress was made.
Finally, on November 2, 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed a bill into law establishing Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a federal holiday to be observed on the third Monday of January each year. The first official observance of the holiday took place on January 20, 1986.
Since then, Martin Luther King Jr. Day has become a day of reflection, service, and celebration of King’s vision of equality, justice, and peace. It serves as a reminder of the importance of continuing to work towards a more just and equitable society for all.

How ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ Became a Sleeper Hit
Mufasa has life in him after all.
“Mufasa: The Lion King,” a photorealistic “Lion King” prequel, arrived on cat paws at the Christmas box office, collecting a weak $35 million in its first weekend in theaters, or 30 percent less than Disney had expected.
The company had been hoping that “Mufasa” would add to investor confidence about a turnaround at Walt Disney Studios. Instead, it prompted a new worry: Perhaps the money-gushing “Lion King” franchise (movie and TV spinoffs, a smash stage musical, theme park attractions, the sale of countless stuffed Simbas) was starting to slow. The franchise is 30 years old, after all.
But “Mufasa,” which cost $200 million to make, has since become a sleeper success. It was on pace to sell roughly $16.5 million in tickets from Friday through Monday, enough for No. 1 and bringing its domestic total to about $211 million. That would push the movie into the box office top 10 for 2024. Globally, “Mufasa” has now been No. 1 for five weeks running, and domestic and overseas ticket sales now total around $600 million.
Box office analysts estimated on Saturday that “Mufasa” could add an additional $75 million to $100 million to its worldwide total by the end of its run in theaters.
Competition for family viewers probably hurt “Mufasa” when it debuted on Dec. 20. Other movies going after the same audience included “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” “Wicked” and Disney’s own “Moana 2.” “Mufasa,” directed by Barry Jenkins, was the only prequel of the bunch, and prequels usually have less urgent “need to see,” to use Hollywood jargon: Why rush out to find out how a story starts when you already know how it ends?
But competition has eased. The only new movies to arrive over the weekend were “One of Them Days,” a low-budget, R-rated comedy, and “Wolf Man,” an R-rated horror movie. The historical drama “September 5,” which has received strong reviews, had been scheduled for wide release on Friday. But after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences pushed back nominations voting for the Oscars because of the Los Angeles fires, Paramount Pictures delayed the film’s rollout in the hopes that it will get nominations that it can then use in ads. (A wide release for “September 5” is now planned for early February.)
“Mufasa” has also benefited from attention on social media. Over the Christmas and New Year’s holiday period, Disney marketers noticed that TikTok users were embracing original songs written for the film by Lin-Manuel Miranda — in particular, the jaunty ode to sibling-hood, “I Always Wanted a Brother.” Disney rushed to amplify the trend, releasing extended video clips of musical sequences from the film and boosting music-related advertising. The studio had Mr. Miranda make videos of himself talking about the song.
While promoting “Mufasa” on “The Jennifer Hudson Show” in December, Aaron Pierre, who voices Simba’s father in the movie, danced as he walked to the stage. A video showcasing his moves has since gone viral, undoubtedly adding to interest in the film.
It was a good weekend at the box office for Disney for another reason. “Moana 2” crossed $1 billion worldwide, becoming the studio’s third release of 2024 to do so. (The other two were “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine.”)
No other studio had even one billion-dollar movie last year.
“Mufasa: The Lion King” is the latest animated film to take audiences by storm, but its success didn’t happen overnight. In fact, it started out as a sleeper hit, slowly building momentum until it became a phenomenon. The film, which follows the story of a young lion named Mufasa who must learn to embrace his destiny as the rightful king of the pride, was initially overshadowed by other big-budget animated films. However, word of mouth quickly spread about the film’s stunning animation, heartfelt story, and unforgettable characters.
As more and more people began to discover “Mufasa: The Lion King,” its box office numbers started to climb. Soon, it was earning rave reviews from critics and audiences alike, propelling it to the top of the charts.
What set “Mufasa: The Lion King” apart from other animated films was its universal themes of family, duty, and the circle of life. Audiences of all ages were drawn to its emotional storytelling and powerful message, making it a must-see film for families everywhere.
Now, “Mufasa: The Lion King” is not just a sleeper hit, but a cultural phenomenon. It has spawned sequels, merchandise, and even a Broadway musical, solidifying its place as one of the most beloved animated films of all time.
So next time you’re looking for a heartwarming and inspiring film to watch, consider giving “Mufasa: The Lion King” a try. You just might be surprised by how much it touches your heart and soul.
